I want to take my practice in Buddhism seriously and I want to start to observe the five precepts. I understand that I am only human and I can make mistakes (and very capable of it >_<") as well as other Dharma practicioners. I for once want to take my practice seriously and not slack off.

Do you have any advice?

Be gentle with yourself. Mindfulness before self-pressuring. Think of which precepts you may have the most problem with keeping, and be especially mindful of them. Also, remind yourself of why one undertakes the precepts, why the Buddha asked us to observe them.

What Jizo said.

And I know that aside from that, what helps me is reading some of the discourses on the various precepts. All are available free online, you just have to look them up.

The layman's code of discipline and the discourse attached to it (the Sigalovada Sutra found here http://www.accesstoinsight.org/canon/sutta/digha/dn-31-nt1.html ), may be of some help as well.

...but mostly, just remember what Jizo said. 3nodding

Here are the lay precepts, specifically.

1. Panatipata veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from destroying living creatures.

2. Adinnadana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from taking that which is not given.

3. Kamesu micchacara veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual misconduct.

4. Musavada veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from incorrect speech.

5. Suramerayamajja pamadatthana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to carelessness.

Remember, these are not sins. You only transgress against yourself.

And what Jizo said.
