My marching band's practice field is in full view of two fairly major roads and an intersection. As people are driving by, we often have to put up with honking, shouts of "Band sucks!" and "Get a life!", and incoherant screaming. We were even mooned once last year. It's annoying, but we get at least two screamers, a shout and a honk every practice, so we learn to deal with it. I know from a friend in another local band that the same thing happens at their practices. Does this happen to anyone else?

We never had drive-by discouragement.... In fact, one of the "things" to do is to honk and cheer when you pass by the field while the marching band is practicing. Especially if you're an alumni. xd They come to expect it.

Purple_Rain Nope. Everyone loves our band. We get money cheers and hugs. ^^ God, how I wish. All too often, we get shouts of "Band is teh stupidzorz!" and the like. Except when we march down the main hallway before the Homecoming game... smile

Our football field is behind the school so we get no drive-by...but when we went to camp last year at CMU there were people there who just drove by and honked...lol...

Yes, people yell at us. And they yell at us at least once a day. They aren't nice people. Of course the football team practices the same time we did while we had marching camp.

We get the jocks and the girls who all they say are "sports! sports! sports!" driving by and honking and yelling at us... our after school practices are in the parking lot, so people are driving by constantly and we get barraged with that crap a lot. My school literally revolves around the football team, so the band gets treated like total scum... at football games, after we do our half time show, we usually find our seats all taken by people, and we literally have to force/threaten/attack them to get them to move because they have no respect for us...

We have the same problem...Our practice field is the lawn out in front of the elementary school, so we have four interesections right there.....plus trains, but they aren't as rude (just honk lol)...But people will drive by about every time we're out practicing and shout out F*CK YOU!....As you can imagine, many of us have resisted the temptation to...*cough*...yell back..hehe....
But we also have the problem elsewhere.....People are a bunch of immature idiots I'm afraid to say, for the most part...At least the other bands will always have the courtesy to give encouragement...hmph...But hey! we don't care! biggrin

Yes we do. Our practice field is right by this road and lots of people honk. Our other practice field by the stadium is right by a pretty good used road and people like to drive by and honk and scream and it's also right next to the railraod . . . sweatdrop

Well, our school, and all the practice areas are on a hill, so you'd have to go up the driveway w/ the express purpose of seeking out the band (wherever they may be spread) to do that... However, I do recall, my freshman yr. standing on the upper parking lot, doing drill, and the football team was sitting off to the side, watching. And, a bunch of them were wearing these stupin neon orange bandanas (school colors being blue and gold and all) So, when they started talking and yelling at us, I decided to make a remark to their choice of accessories whee xp morons

Masquanade it's also right next to the railraod . . . sweatdrop We love it when our trains come by though......Everyone starts cracking up because the band director usually can't scream over it....hehe.....(He could use the Long Ranger, lol...but it's not like we could hear him over the AHHHHNG of the trains anyway...hehe)

Well, we don't have a railroad, but there is a firehouse right across the street, meaning at any time our directors' words could be drowned out by sirens. The Long Ranger can't quite outdo that.
