I would like to inform people here about a new wave that is coming across the United Sates. What wave you migh ask well it is how many people are finding they are allergic to meat. I am one of those here. I was a full Vegetrain for nearly 3 years of my life and when i tried to go back on a little meat i found all it did was make me sicker than a dog. Well my husband started to do some research online only to discovery that I am not alone several famous people (will post who in later postings) have the same problem and some to the point that one bite of meat could kill them. This is a serious issue and something in the future I will discuss more of. I would like to know if you personal have met anybody that is allergic to meat and your opions on the matter. I will post links to articles here as well for further research on the subject for all those that are interested in learning more about this issue. Thankyou.

I would think that the allergy only becomes deadly if one stops eating meat for a long time. I know people who, after having been veg for a few years, get horribly sick when they eat meat again.

cortiko yeh..i don't think that you would develop an allergy..i think if you are allergic to meat you would be from birth.. You can develop other allergies, so I don't see why an allergy to meat would be different. I'm not a doctor, though, so I'd have to see some actual evidence.

That was a very good informative article. The only people I know with food allergies in my family are my cousin (allergic to chocolate) and my grandmother (peanuts). Thankfully, I am not allergic to any food (that I know of). I never thought of being allergic to meat but I guess it can really be anything.

This is a great topic to discuss. But unfortunately, I've never crossed paths with anyone who is allergic to meat. You're the first...feel proud. -hugs- whee wink

rickoise sorry, but i dont think anyone would join a guild about vegitarianisum unless they were proud of themselves for makeing the decision hmm...I can't say that I'm proud. I made the decision before I even knew what the word means. I can't see myself eating meat anytime in the near future, but my reasons for not eating meat are different from when I started. Actually not really, but I don't agree with my decision. My messed up head. To the topic. Sometime when I was younger during my transition into a non-meat life. My mom had told me that she's allergic to fish. It was something that happened towards her late teenage years. Sometimes it's hard for her, because people don't believe her. And places aren't careful as to keeping meat seperate. Thankfully it's extremely rare, but she's had allergic reactions because places don't clean out their oil after cooking fish in it or whatever. She even can feel the effects when she's cooking my dad an occasional fish meal. The smell can get to her. When I did learn that my mom was allergic, I decided to stop eating fish as well. I felt 'why should I eat it when she can't. so I'll stop eating it too as a personal sacrifice.' So even if I were to ever eat meat again, I would never eat fish. I've never told my mom this yet.

The article that ladydarkmoonstrom posted was pretty informative, but seemed to lack information in the intolerance category. Personally I've known several veg*ns who got sick from eating meat after going for a while without. I don't think it's an allergy though, since with continued limited exposure most were able to eat meat again. Unfortunately, I couldn't locate any information on the topic via google except for this forum post (unreliable source at best >.<): "I was told by a nurse practionar that your body stops producing the enzyme that helps digest complex proteins found in meat (this takes 8-10 years). Your body can be eased into eating meat again if you start introducing it slowly with soup stock and very small portions of meat but you will be sick. Your body will have to digest what it can with a limited amount of enzymes." http://veggie.org/msg-boards/veggie2000/messages/165.html EDIT: Better article/source! http://studenthealth.oregonstate.edu/answerspot/message.php?message=2172

I'd hate to be allergic to meat. I am allergic to any furry animals that are bigger than hampsters, and dust. I'm doing shots to get rid of them , but that seems to make it worse.

I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to meat now...I was at Kanki for my birthday and I had the vegetarian meal, but the chef gave me some of those mushrooms that they grill after the meat, but before they clean the grill, so they have meaty-ness grilled into them, and I accidentally ate some, and a few hours later, I had an ass-plosion...but it could have been anything I ate there...>.<
