Ok, ok, so it may be a little early to be getting all excited, but Vesak's May 13th. I'll be going about my usual 13 day fast beginning on May 1st. I eat just one simple meal a day within a half hour of my waking hours, and keep track of my health to make sure I don't lose muscle mass, or face any complications. Y'all are welcome to join my celebration of Vesak with the fast. biggrin If you have your own method of honoring the day, then post, cause we all wanna know.

Vesak, also known as Buddha Day, is one of the big religious holidays for us Buddhists. It's a simultanious celebration of the birth, enlightenment and passing of Siddhartha Gautama (otherwise known as the Buddha). It's a day to remember what's right and what's worth working for - a day of focus on the best example we've got. For a more detailed explination of what it means as a practice day, try http://www.buddhanet.net/vesak.htm - it's fairly in depth. 3nodding

ღஐღ I'll definately try a 13-day fast. I think that would be a nice way to remain mindful on the occassion and its significance.

I'm not sure I'd want to do a 13 day fast. I'll try just for that day, though.
In other news, a comet will pass by Earth on the 14th. It will be nice to see. :3

Hmm, this seems very interesting. I don't think i'm healthy enough to participate in the 13 day fast (just got out of anorexia around 3 weeks ago), but I'll try to participate in a fast on the 13th. ^_^

Perhaps you could do precisely the opposite, considering what you've just been through. Eat a meal in honor of the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha.
Think that while you're eating, you're allowing the Dharma to nourish you. You could take refuge before eating the meal itself. Then, be mindful while you're eating, and dedicate the merit generated by practicing mindfulness and gratitude to attaining enlightenment for the benefit of all.

Happy day one of fasting! How's everyone holding up? First day is the easiest, but you need to take precautions to stay healthy. To minimalize the wear and tear that starvation has on your mind, try going to be early and getting enough protein and carbs in your breakfast, until you are sure you can hold up fine.

ღஐღ crying My doctor told me that I can't fast. He says I'm still recovering from my stress-induced weight loss. Boo-urns! My apologies, haena_nights26! I really wanted to take part in this, but I trust what my doctor has to say.

Nuts. In true non-mindfulness fashion, I forgot about the fast!
...can i start late?
Edited: After having reviewed my financial and home food related situations, fasting is likely out of the question for me as well. There is nothing here but oatmeal right now, and I am on a relatively strict diet...living on a single oatmeal meal would throw it out of whack. If the food situation changes, I wil fast, but as it stands, we live hand-to-mouth, and there's not enough to make a good morning meal. No protien! crying

What is a fast? Why so attached to the idea of "not eating" while fasting?
Fast everywhere. Fast while eating.
Mindfulness, Byaggha.

That probally would be a better idea for this year, or atleast until im healthy. Thanks for the suggestion!

That stuff gets you a ticket, and no matter how well you can quote the Dharma, the cops don't listen. *giggles* Thanks, Makoto. heart

Thank you, Makoto. Yes thats a good way to honor the occasion. I simply choose the not eating thing because I've been doing for quite a few Vesaks, now. Anyone else have ideas for ways to honor Vesak?
