I know most of you have probably heard about this, but there are new fertility awareness products on the market that are great! They're called "ovulation microscopes" and by simply looking at a drop of spit each morning, you are able to see when you are infertile, when you are about to ovulate, when you are ovulating, and when you have finished. They are marketed to "aid conception" but obviously they have other uses as well. Even the manufactures website talks about using it to avoid pregnancy by being aware of your body. It really is a great option for people who can not or will not use chemical or barriar methods of birth control. The ONLY downside, is this method requires some self control, but it is the easiest method I've ever seen of tracking your fertility and it doesnt involve urine tests or cervical mucous. I know this could vastly cut down on unintended pregnancies, but NO ONE in the main stream media really talks about it. Anyways, here's a link to the website of one of the manufactures. http://www.fertile-focus.com/research.htmlThoughts?

*news to me*
Just one.
Thats...totally awesome! biggrin
It's quick. It's easy (spit?! Are you kidding me?!). And if it's as accurate as they claim...that's pretty darn impressive.
I want one...eventually. Not only am I in the "no chemical or barriar methods" camp but I have an irregular cycle to boot. XD

yeah I just bought one and it is SO SO easy.
You just take off the lens(really easy to do) take a drop of spit from under your tounge and place it on the lens. Then you wait for it to dry and put the lens back on the microscope. Then you just press the little light button and look in.
It sounds more complicated than it is. You do it first thing in the morning and it tells you exactly when you are coming up on ovulation because you can see the progress.
The first day I used mine I didn't really see much. Then the next day I was like "OMG there's ferning!" which means you're about to ovulate. Then the next day there was full out ferning which means you ARE ovulating. Today, it was going back down. It's really really cool, and really cheap (like 30 dollars for something that lasts you years)
Mine also came with a place to track my findings so I can see patterns in my fertility. smile
The whole process takes the 5 minutes it takes for spit to dry and you just leave it out so you can be getting ready in the mean time. Looking at it takes like 3 seconds( though I looked alot longer because I thought it was so cool!)

I think Planned Parenthood should start offering these if they truly care about women avoiding pregnancy. Well...I didn't read the article, so if it's been out awhile and works well, I think they should. If it's something new, makes no sense to embrace it immediately if you're that big.

the only problem is potential failure or some fluke... so i'd suggest still using other forms of bc just in case... probably obviously enough

divineseraph the only problem is potential failure or some fluke... so i'd suggest still using other forms of bc just in case... probably obviously enough I wonder if (how) it would work with chemical birth control though. I assume it works by measuring the amount of hormones in your body and all that fun stuff, if a woman was on Birth Control I wonder if this would work for her, considering that she's adding extra hormones to her body.

It seems that a hormonal change is exactly what you are looking for.

2 things
1st-I really doubt planned parenthood would encourage it-it only costs at most 30 dollars a year and that wouldn't be good for their bottom line.
2nd-As far as working with birth control, hormonal birth controls are supposed to stop you from ovulating so even if it worked it wouldnt really have much of a point unless you were just paranoid.

Yes, however if you miss a pill than you can begin ovulating again without knowing it. Or if you need to take anti-biotics and you know that they reduce the effectiveness of the pill. etc.
Someone should invent something that shows you if your pill is working. Because you can't tell if the chemicals are working correctly and I know so many people who would buy something like that, just be sure.

Oh and posting on behalf of Dylan (Red Mage Raven) here, he thinks this is a good idea too. He said it would be good for people who can't take birth control or for couples who are both allergic to latex and who can't take birth control.
It doesn't protect against STDs though, so people would have to find something else to do that (female condom would work, but they can make weird noises).

yeah, this really only works if you're in a commited relationship. But still, lots of "unplanned" pregnancies happen in commited relationships so it could definatly help smile

It's 30 dollars for something that should last at least 5 years...not a bad investment...much cheaper than a 5 years of condoms or pills
