Billy's Garden Billy's garden is a small patch of ground behind Duplex #33 and 34, accessed through his back door. The ground has been degrassed and tilled, with seeds planted. So far, nothing has blossomed. Just by the door, there is a section of concrete Billy intends to turn into a deck to drink and smoke on once he locates some comfortable deck chairs and a little table.

Billy had spent the past two days working in the back yard of his duplex. Ripping up the grass had been hard with his mutated hands, but with the help of a sharp rock he had found and other jungle found tools, he had managed to rip the square patch bare, and even hammered in a make-shift fence fashioned from fallen branches and thick sticks he had found in the woods. By that afternoon, he was tired, sitting in the dirt in his sweaty shirt and pants with the baggy of seeds clutched in his hands. What was he supposed to do? No grass. Check. Didn't have weed killer- so it'd be organic. Cool. Did he just sprinkle the seeds about? Damn.

When Kaveri was gardening herself, she took notice of her neighbour five or so duplexes down, occasionally glancing over to see the progress go along - and she just so happened to be out at the same time as Billy when she went out to start work on her own garden today. A strange looking fellow, but then again, on this island... who isn't strange looking?
She watches him for a few moments with the small shovel in her hand, observing him milling about the plot of land that he had picked out. A smirk tugs at the corner of her lips. Obviously, someone's new at this gardening thing.
Kaveri boldly strides towards him, stopping ten feet from the fence and idly tapping the shovel against her thigh. "Mornin', neighbour," she greets, "startin' a garden, are ya?"
She tilts her head curiously, eyeballing the rather scattered collection of seeds on the ground. Pointing a finger at it with a smile, she offers a suggestion in attempt to be helpful. "Y'know, ya might get better results if you plant the seeds in rows rather than randomly dropping them on the ground and hoping they'll just grow like that. You have to actually bury them."

Billy glanced up from where he had squatted to frown at the dark skinned woman. He glanced down at the ones he had already dropped to poke them in with the pointer finger that remained on his strange hands. "An who're you then?" He grunted, clutching the rest to wait for her to leave him alone.

"Just a wandering neighbour," Kaveri says with a polite shrug, "saw ya gardenin'. I was interested in seeing what you were doing, so I came over -- you may have seen my own garden-in-progress a few duplexes down from yours."
She puts her hands behind her back, half-bending over to lean over the fence and get a better look at what the octopus man is doing. Really, does he honestly expect anything to grow if it's arranged like that?

"I don' go abou' much," He grunted in reply, shifting the baggy of seeds to a chest tentacle so he could use both hands to dig.

Hn. He's not a very sociable one, is he? Kaveri puts a hand on her hip, watching him dig. "Y'know, a shovel might help you so you don't have to get your hands dirty," she offers, although she's kind of hesitant on handing the man her own shovel.

"Wha', ye go' one ha-" He stopped, noting that the woman indeed came equiped with gardening supplies. At least a trowel. "Oy, coul' I borrow tha'? I'm runnin' out o' fingers an' don' got any nails," He laughed bitterly.

"Ey, maybe," Kaveri says, putting her hands behind her back again. "I should show you how to get this thing shaped up, too -- more fit for growing. Y'mind if I step over the fence and help out a bit?"
"And if you don't mind me asking, what are you growing? I might have some knowledge on what it is you're planting if it's vegetables or pot -- but flowers are out of the question," she adds.

He frowned, leaning back as he regarded her critically. He had never seen her befor- she must have been new- or at least new to him. She either hadn't noticed his tentacles, were being polite, or she was used to it by now. "Pot," he said with a frown. "An' go ahead."

Kaveri has learned by now not to point out people's differences - even if they have tentacles coming out of their chest, tails, multiple nipples, or horns. She'd honestly come to expect weird stuff like this, but so far, everyone else she had met were injected with terrestrial animals - Billy was her first encounter with a man that was part sea creature. It was kind of gross, but on the other hand... pointing it out would probably just make him feel worse.
She tugs the bottom hem of her skirt up a bit and goes over the fence, careful not to step on any of the seeds that Billy had thrown about. "Really, pot? Awesome," the woman grins. "I've done that before. I'll be glad to help, and I can definitely say it's better homegrown. Here." She squats down in the dirt, digging small holes down a straight row, plucking up some of the unplanted seeds and dropping them down before covering them up.
"Growing it outdoors is a good idea, too -- it comes out the best that way," she adds. "Just be sure to keep it protected from the ******** that lives on this island eating it."

He concidered her for a logn moment, but frankly, he really didn't know anything about gardening, and he wanted this done. "I was thinkin' soap. Don' tha' keep th'deer away?"

"Soap's good," Kaveri nods, "plus it isn't chemical s**t like pesticides and washes off easy. Mix it with water to get the solution diluted a bit, then use a spray bottle so there's a nice, even coverage on everything."
She continues digging little rows and putting the seeds in, occasionally stopping to search the ground for more. "You'll also want to water these. I'm not sure how good the soil is here, but I guess the both of us'll find out soon -- I just planted my seeds the other day."
She chuckles, shaking her head. "I wish I had the foresight to bring some pot seeds of my own with me to this ******** island, man -- then I could just pretend this place was some kind of movie set or something."

The tentacles on his chest gave a nervious twitch, resituating under his shirt, "There was seeds in wha' I brough', but I took a collection- go' some from Antony- th'squirrel gel, righ'? She donated some t'me cause. So I got enough fer a nice crop here... don' know wha' type most o' it is, though. Aint me expertise." He handed the rest of the bag over, sitting back out of the way to watch. "I though' y'jes' tied up th'block o' it. Th'smell an' taste drive them buggers mad."

"I guess we won't find out what we have until it grows, huh?" Kaveri smiles, accepting the bag. At least she wouldn't have to pick these out from the dirt -- those blended in too much for their own good!
"That could also work -- but actually spraying the soap on the plants does really good. I've always sprayed, myself, but never considered hanging the bars around the garden." She tilts her head, 'hmm'ing. "I'll have to give that a try and see how it goes with my own bit."
