Do you guys think there is a difference between a brawler, a fighter and a martial artist? I was just thinking today... "Hmm, I hear all three used... all three mean essentially the same thing." Whats your guys take on it? I personally think they are all just the same thing, its a matter of preference of what to call yourself.

Brawlers, as I would understand it, would be people that just like to fight, and do it a lot for maybe no more reason than its fun. Fighters could be people that are professionals, like ...I actually don't know any. I have no knowlege when it comes to professional fighters. Martial artists would just be anyone who practices a martial art. I would say that, brawlers and fighters can be martial artists, but martial artists aren't necessarily fighters or brawlers. By the same token, they are kind of the same thing.

I mean I would guess brawlers do more infighting and grappling, fighters are more rounded, and martial artists are practicioners of specific martial arts, but really no difference in my opinion cause they can all lump together.

Yeah, I think you're right. They're pretty much all synonoms(sp?). Minor conotative differences though.

Brawling = Igor vs Inoue. That was a ******** war. So basically Brawling to me is just straight out throwing punches and that's about it.
Fighters= Professionals and people who generally know what their doing.
Martial Artists = People who practice martial Arts.

Psychologically you could argue that the brawler esque character retains an almost feral nature in his reactions, causing constant aggresion through posture, expression and presense, often found in English Pubs oO Fighter you couldn't really classify as anything besides one that takes part in a fight for any given motive, whether it be stemming from the brawler mindset or in self defence. A Martial Artist is simply the student of a style of combat, not nessecary either of the above but easily with the ability to (or at least the MAist SHOULD have the ability too)

I'd also like to add that for me brawler implies a certain kind of crudeness that a martial artist shouldn't have, like I'd say Butterbean was a brawler, would you call him a martial artist?

Not quite so, though in a way I can be a brawler, perhaps not so much...brawling yet adaptable, I've been in fights where my fast footwork and handwork have KO'd a few people only having have to scream, grab someone from their feet (I'm 6'5) and head butt them etc so I can go from "neat" to suddenly very messy in a split second. Perhaps thats the element of the fighter we're searching for? the adaptability and the constant search of improvement through constant training both in and out of the gym?...or perhaps indeed I am rambling now... (..I missed gaia..)

You guys seem so much wiser than me. Does that just come with experience, or am I just undereducated about martial arts?

No, I just think that these are subjective opinions. I don't think it matters what title it is, you can call yourself a brawler or a fighter or a martial artist, doesn't matter, they all fight.

True, true. I mean they are all the same pretty much. The only difference I think there is, is how people think of each of those words. Like I said before, connotative differences. A brawler makes me think of a person that you would typically see in a barfight, for example. Martial Artist makes me think of someone whos studies a particular martial art. Thats pretty much it though. Otherwise, you are right, they're just the same.

I think of it this way
Martial Artist- A person who studies traditional martial arts such as Kung Fu or Tai Chi more for self development then fighting ability
Fighter- A person who does full contact sport events such as Muay Thai, MMA, NHB or Vale Tudo an such.
Brawler- A streetfighter who likes to punch like a madman to see his opponent dead or getting there, kinda like "Tank" Abbot he's my definition of brawler.
