So how long would it take to learn C++ well?
If you are teaching yourself at least an hour a day..
PostPosted: Mon Apr 17, 2006 11:15 am

depends of what you mean by learning C++ *well*
Of course you could learn class , template , inheritage, etc in 2-4 week. That's about the time if take to learn a language.

But how much time it would take to learn how to use them well... what is the concept of a classes and inheritage and everything related to object oriented programming, design pattern, etc. that's quite diferent.

XP... I'm transitioning from Java to C#... lol...

It all depends on how much you already know, how quick you can learn, how much you want to know, and what resources you have and can get...

--------------------------------
Depends of your tools, your abilities, your way to learn, and your goal. If you want to learn C++ just to get used to the notion of classes and stuff, it'll take a shorter while than if you're aiming to learn stuff like MFC.

Java, similar to C++, taught by a professional 4 hours a week, took 2 months to learn the basics.

Hm... Because of my exceptional skill in computer tech, I was able to have my computer programming class promoted to the advanced class. It's focus is on the more advanced aspects of C++ and Java. I've done nothing of either of them, so I've got the summer to teach myself the basics of both.

Think I'll be able to make it with about 55 hours a week minimum of study? Of course, I have access to any and every instruction manual I want, as my parents have agreed to buy whatever I choose to learn these two languages.

I think I'm going to check what O'Reilly has on them later...

I HIGHLY recommend the Head First series (by O'Reilly).

I was told that if you are familiar with object oriented concepts then it's mostly learning the syntax.

I'm going to try this summer.

Java is platform-independent, and more like C++, whereas J# is Microsoft's version of Javascript. Which means that I will be avoiding J# at all costs. xd

We've been learning it for the past 2 semesters at college. We've programming some games such as Connect4 or Othello. Also I'm planning to program a Space Invaders game in my free time this summer. razz
If that's what you mean by knowing C++ "well" then it would take 1 year with a good teacher twice a week, or perhaps about a month of intensive study with a good book(s) and someone to help. Google, the programmer's best friend, would also help. razz
