I decided that you all should be able to know what's going on for our dear former captain. So, I will be posting his weekly letters from his mission in this thread. Please don't comment too much in here. If you have something to say to him about it, pm me. If you have a general comment, use the guild house. That way, we can all just find the letters easily.

Enjoy!

This letter was mailed to his mom and she wrote it out and sent it to me via e-mail.

Dear Mom,

Well my branch president said that I should write to you, so I'm writing. As of
tonight, I am senior companion to the district leader. Neither of us really
know what to do so we just work together. There are four guys (the word guys
was crossed out and he wrote "This is bad, I'm supposed to say Elder") and four
sisters. I may or may not be the Zone Leader later on. If I am I will be so
busy its not ever funny.... I have 12 hours of classes tomorrow in addition to
district duties.

Well, lights out is in a minute and a half....I won't be able to write until
next Thursday and because we've been so busy the other set of elders are having
a quick shower.

Anyways, lights out. i love you. I will write to you in eight days, please
email Tamara at eternals_star@hotmail.com with the new mailing address and let
her know that my p-day is on Thursdays. Thanks.

Elder Bennion
p.s. I'm having a great time!

I got 2 letters in the mail last week but they are really long so I don't feel like typing them. I will review them soon and put in points that you might find interesting. Also, I got a tape from him too. It was short but nice to hear his voice.

Hello!

I have the opportunity to write and tell you about how this week has been going since Sunday, so I will. Some of the things I say will be repeated in the 7 page letter that I wrote that will be on its way soon.

I am feeling great - although my body has decided to become immune to the effects of Ibubrofen. I talked to a Sister in our ward that is a prescriptionist and she told me that the absolute maximum amount of advil that I can take without risking making my stomach bleed is 4 pills every 8 hours. I have 4 pills in my system right now, in addition to one tylenol but my teeth are still killing me. I am going to be calling Sister Christiansen and asking her to book me an appointment with the dentist. I don't know whether I need root canals on the teeth on the right side of my mouth, but it seems almost like I do. I will have the dentist run some pain tests on it and he can send the bill to the house.

In terms of where to send the pills, send it to the mission home. All mail that is sent should be sent via the mission home, as you don't know if I am gonna get transferred at the end of the transfer.

Yesterday was an amazing day - after a very discouraging week. Our investigator that had seemed so golden when we taught him the first finally opened the door for us - after ignoring us for 4 days. When he didn't come to church, we were worried and went to see him in person - however, we did not know that 8:00 is a bad time to call in. He was irritated at the fact that we would come without making an appointment, especially at night and during his basketball game! To add to this, my companion, Elder Nelson, had the flu, and Elder Newton and I were a little bit late coming back from tracting. We had written down 4:30 when he said 4:00 or 4:30 the week before when we had made the appointment, and we weren't able to get there until 5:00. He was not happy with us when he invited us in, and I believe that he was going to ask us not to come back. I just kept praying... and praying... We apologized and explained the reasons behind us coming to check on him. He was still a little upset... we started answering his questions, and by the time we said that we had another appointment to keep, it was almost 6:00. He asked for us to come back and teach him more. I can only imagine what he was thinking when we left. "Now how did they manage to do that? I was gonna tell them that they were rude and ask them not to come back, and then I end up inviting them to come back....?"
It's amazing how the spirit can soften the hearts of people when those people are receptive to it's presence.

Anyways, on Wednesday, we spent alot of the morning inside - because my companion has the flu, (so we are told, he had diarrea.) and had to stay inside, and he did, for half the day. Anyways, Elder Newton and I went out tracting at about 1:15 PM, And I must confess I felt like it was a waste before we got out and started working. Knocking doors has a 1 in 1000 baptisimal rate, so I am told. But Statistics do not matter, they can change. We set out, knowing that we would be biking the mile and a half back to the apartment after a couple of hours (and alot of that distance is on rocky or dirt roads, because they are under construction and let us go through, because we are on bikes and it is alot to ask to go all the way around. And because the owner of the company is a member of the church ) Anyways, we set out and started tracting in an area which I had not known had already been tracting by Elder Nelson and Elder Rhoten when they were on splits. However, when they had tracted they hadn't had much success. We started knocking doors and by the time we left we had added eight... EIGHT potential investigators. We returned to that area after our dinner appointment and knocked another ten houses and recieved ANOTHER potential investigator. Our Teaching pool now consists of several families and our potential investigator side is just getting bigger - as we have yet to make return appointments - 6 out of the nine I was able to make return appointments with, 2 I will be able to make appointments with relatively easily, and the last - is someone who has taken all the discussions already. He believes everything, but he has one problem. He doesn't want to get married. He says he was married before for 13 years and it went sour. We have yet to meet with him and testify of the importance of marriage. If he is willing to act on the spirit, then he will either get married or stop living with his partner - whom is starting to shows signs of disloyalty and alchoholism.

Anyways I feel great right now. I have never had such purpose in anything in my life - I feel like I am actually making a difference. It's funny because people don't even think that I am new to the mission field, unless I tell them that I am. Starting next transfer I will be doing as the assistants do - A little under a year. ( except the assistants say a little over a year. They have like 3 - 6 months left, from what I have been told. )

The mission field is great! I have never felt so happy or so tired in all my life. But God supports me throughout the day, and everyday I awake to a new day, with renewed strength.

I love you all!

Sincerely,
Elder Matt Bennion

Anyways, a note to Katie - everyday is 40 degrees here. It's around 30 - 35 at night. everytime I walk outside I think - oooooooh Vegas....

A note to Alex - That's AWESOME! I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God - and it makes challenges and trials in life seem easier to handle as you read it frequently. I challenge you to try to finish reading it again before I do - I only have about half an hour each day to study the Book of Mormon. As you re-read that book, everyday look for at least one verse that sticks out to you and apply it to your life - I promise that as you do this, God will help to lift you up in your times of trial.

A note to Christopher - I love you. Stay strong, become alive in the Savior of the World and all mankind.

A note to Mom - Don't worry about me. I am safe, protected from harm. I have a good companion and there are members throughout the city that would do next to anything to assist us. Some of them give us food, feed us dinner, give us rides. The Horlockers found out that we are craving pizza and so they are buying pizza for us on Tuesday. We are servants of God - He will take care of us.
- Do you think it would be possible to get a family portrait, with Tamara, before she shaves her head? If so, could you send a framed copy to me please...?
- Also, could you send the recipe to make that really good fruit cocktail salad stuff....? I have a bunch of cans of it but no recipe to make the salad.
-My friend, Michael Locken, had agreed to meet with the missionaries before I left on my mission. If you could find out his address and give it to the missionaries, so they can give it to whichever missionaries are in their area, I would be very grateful. His mothers name is Debbie. They live in Varsity. Michael and his Mother would be receptive to the gospel. They both already live in the same way that we do, minus the 3 hour church on Sunday. Please ask the missionaries to refer to me when making an appointment. Let them know that I would like them to know that this is the most important message on the Earth - Please listen to it. It will bring you happiness and peace that you can find nowhere else. Tell them that I requested at least one lesson. Thanks mom.

A note to Dad - Thank you for the example that you have set for me in my life. It is encouraging for me to look to what you have done before me and see that I am capable of accomplishing anything which is required of me. I love you.

A note to Tamara - I have to go now, our ride is here. I love you.

Well, I would like to say that the work is great and that I am teaching lots and that I have never had so much fun in my life - but I would be lying. We FINALLY added another investigator after two weeks of tracting and asking members for referalls. Yesterday, we were fasting and spent 6 hours of the day outside in the hot sun, tracting. We were on exchanges and I was with Elder Judson, who goes home next transfer. He said that it was the longest day of his mission, and that my area truly sucked.... yup......

But truth be told, things aren't that bad. Whether or not Lamisha will let us in when we come back for a second lesson I don't know. It is more likely with her because we actually taught her a real lesson, even though it was outside, because her husband wasn't home. I believe that she will let us back in though because she even ignored her phone to keep listening to the message. We have planted some seeds that future missionaries will harvest in a couple years. There is a young man that we talked to that will be looking up the missionaries when he heads back to Washington D.C, so maybe David or Ryan will teach him. Actually, I got the coolest feeling after we taught a lesson there ( or rather, my companion taught a lesson there, I really didn't have the opportunity to teach in this one.) That feeling told me that he was going to go home, and was going to call the missionaries, and that he will be the answer to "Elder Palmers" prayers for someone to teach, and that he will remember that I gave him that card, and say that Elder Bennion gave this to me in Las Vegas.... wow. I can't imagine how that would feel to know that one of my friends from High School, across the continent, sent me an investigator....

Fred is progressing nicely, as is his son Justin. And Emma, his wife, is progressing as well, although she doesn't sit in the lessons, we can tell that she still listens and that she recognizes that our religion has truths that the Church of Christ does not. Fred is amazing, and he would do anything for us. He invited us over to his family dinner (he is phillipino - I've never eaten so much for lunch on a sunday in my life, as it would be considered rude not to try everything... two plates full to the brim of food...) We brought our prayerfully selected fellowshipper to that meeting and he fit right in. Everyone loved him right away because he was a white guy that spoke their native language ( there were about 30 of his relatives there, all spoke Togoluk, which our fellowshipper spoke on his mission ) Because of that, we were able to get another family to investigate the church, in the ward three wards west from us, living literally on the border of the west mission, but on our side. With the lesson that we had with Fred on Tuesday, I was surprised to hear myself challenge him to baptism - he thought and thought.... He said that he didn't know if he would be ready by that time.... I told him that he would be.... And I believe he will be... The date that I gave him was June 30, a month from the current date.

Oh speaking of the west mission - we found ANOTHER family being poached by west side missionairies - but it's been reported, we'll see what happens. With the first one that we found, the other missionaries were actually teaching her in our area - which can get you sent home immediately for leaving mission boundaries intentionally.

We haven't been able to see Lovely since her husband came home. Her kids love us though, so I am sure that we will be able to see her again once her husband leaves to go trucking again.

Aaaaanyways...... My teeth seemed to be calming down but have flamed up recently just last night... for several days I was down to 5 or 6 advil a day ( well, generic Ibuprofen, as the 50 extra liquid gels that I bought in the mtc and the hundreds of other advil tablets that I bought ran out last week. The generic stuff works just as well. I am appreciative of your prayers - the root canals that I got in the MTC have just recently calmed down, but since my fast yesterday my one or two (or three or four, I don't know) that still need root canals, are acting up.

There are alot of dogs.... in this city..... They are attracted to missionaries.......I've come up with the saying of "football dog..." Because that's what I was about to do to this little dog that jumped through the fence and was gonna bit me.... I was gonna kick it back over the fence... but thankfully, it's owner called it off before it reached me, and I didn't have to punt the poor animal and turn the owner ( who was a JW ) even more against us. I'm glad she called off her dog though... I'm gonna start carrying doggy treats... like Elder Switzer does.

My companion and I worked out how much we have travelled on our bikes this transfer - about 25 miles a day, cause he got a computer for his bike in his easter package, and that calculates to the tenth of a mile the distance that we travel in a day. So 25 miles a day * 30 days = 750 miles.... now convert it into kilometers..... which I'm not going to do.

Sincererly,

Elder Matt Bennion
(Matt the Mormon Missionary Medicine Man!) Jokes......

Dad,

I just have one question, so that I will be able to tell Sister Christenson when I ask for the dental appointment - did they refund the money for the dental work done in the MTC?

As for my medication, the sooner you send it the better, especially if it is near transfers as it can get sent to the wrong zone and who knows where else it goes from there. My companion just recently got his easter package because it went to every zone in the mission before it got to him. I have run almost out of Prevacid, so if you could send me as much medication as you can, it would be much appreciated. Another thing that would be nice is a nice picture of the family with Tamara in a frame. If that is possible. (preferably REALLY soon, before she cuts her hair.)

If it is really expensive to send, perhaps it would be best to send it down with Uncle Dennis ( I think it was Uncle Dennis ) and he can just mail it that way - or you can use the flat rate boxes, so you don't have to worry about weight - Talk to Bill Smith about the cheapest ways and the fastest ways to send things. He knows all about it : P, and could probably supply you with pre-paid priority mail envelopes - although I am not sure if they are pre-paid, or you pay with a PO before you send them... Anyways, I love you lots. Thanks for the support and for the love, and for the prayers.

Mom,
For some reason, the first thing that I always am prompted to write is Don't Worry! I am safe - I'm told so in my patriarchal blessing. It says "Matthew, I bless you that you will be safe and protected as you are called to be away from your family at times." And if this isn't a call away from my family, I don't know what is. God is watching over me, and all the trials that I am having, all the problems with my teeth, everything that happens in the next two years - is all part of the plan. I am a servant of God - chosen to represent Jesus Christ Himself. I am to do what He would do, to say what He would Say - if He Himself was ministering to the very people to whom I have been sent. I know that He will watch over me and protect me, as well as my family, at all times. I love you.

Could you send me the addresses for Brandon Comfort, Ryan Palmer, James Hogenson, Luke Matthews and Tim Wright? I've written to Oscar at the MTC, cause it's the same general address, it'll get to him before he leaves, and I included letters for people in the last letter that I sent home ( you should get it soon... )

I also included a letter for Steve - if you could find out his address and forward that letter to him, I would be very appreciative.

I love you.

Christopher,

So what was the reason that they fired you for? Is it a good enough reason to SUE THE PANTS OFF THEM and get money for all the grief that they have caused you?

Anyways, I know that this happened for a reason - the simple reason is that you can't work as a sales specialist the rest of your life and they were never going to promote you. You will be blessed to find a good job, as you strive to live according to the Will of God - seek to serve those around you, and life will be easier to deal with. You will be blessed as you do this, and our entire family is being blessed by my being on a mission - keep that in mind.

Alex,

Hey buddy!
Hows is it going? You know what, sometimes things are really gonna suck...... like for me this week ALL we did was work outside, and with the stats that we have, it looks like we stayed in the apartment all week, aside from the 10 - 30 hours of tracting (Usually around 20, it'll be higher this week, cause we spent 6 hours plus yesterday tracting. )

You know how the tracting is like in Best Two Years...? It's very similar. Although street contacting - we don't chase people on bikes.... sometimes we bike really fast and go totally out of our way to talk to people who yell at us and just don't say anything cause they are hoping that we will get hit by a car on the way over....

Speaking of that, I almost got hit by a car the other day... The guy looked like he was almost trying to hit me. He was going about 50 miles on a 35 road, and went through a red light that had been red for nearly 30 or 40 seconds. If I hadn't have been paying attention to the spirit, he would have flattened me.

Just remember that there is always something to be learned from every situation in life... Look for the silver lining.

I love you buddy.

Katie,

I'm gonna guess that you did piano - I don't know why... I don't get spiritual guidance for things like that : P.
Don't get too discouraged with the results of one assignment. Always aim to do the best you can. When you do so, you know when you need help understanding something and then you will do better the next time.
Always work your hardest. I love you. Good luck with school and the talent show.

Tamara,
Sorry that I haven't been able to say much in these little notes - at least you get the letters. If you haven't got the letter about the pictures yet, I asked that you take some nice pictures of you all dressed up before you shave your head. If you could do that and send them to me, I would be very happy. I love you.

I got this in addition to my letter in the mail. Please don't post here as it says, I will make a thread for it.

Topic: A Letter From Paladin!

Greetings memebers of "The Army of Helaman" Guild.

I'm sitting here in my apartment after a discouraging Sunday and got out the printoffs of the two pages of tghe goodbyes that I recieved from this guild. I would like to thank those of you who posted in that thread. It means alot to me.

Ever since I joined The Army of Helaman Guild when it was a single thread I have thought about it everyday. I joined when it was very young but was growing at a rate such that Mormon_Seebs could not handle a membership list. I went through the 300 pages of posts and collected the names of all those who had requested to join. Since then, I started the Official Army of Helaman Guild, and I devoted more than 2 hourseveryday to the management of the Guild. I have watched as 400 people, and 7 or 8 other gulds, have come into fellowship with it.

First off, I would like to thank Mormon_Seebs for starting the guild in a thread form. Everything came from that. I would like to thank ConcreteAngel, who invited me to be a member in that guild. I would like to thank Sereni Kitty, for allowing me to be the captain of tghe official guild, even though she could've been the one to start it up. I would like to thank all those who donated the initial funds for the formation of the guild. Particularly dancing_yumi, Termas, Sereni Kitty, ConcreteAngel and all other donors.

I woulds like to extend a big thank you to all of those members who served as my "council" as it were. I could not have run this guild when I did with my strength alone. Those whom I would like to extend special thank you's to are Sereni Kitty, Super Smurf, Mormon_Seebs, Termas, Panzer45, Kat_29, ConcreteAngel, Lestelle, Reiji, Qwyndara, Mahia M, DragonWarrior_keltyr, Jigoku_Angel, Misaki, Pheonix_echo, Helaman, Whiteballer and all others whom have served as members of the crew. I haven't been on for a long time, almost a year, so I cannot remember all of the names of those who assisted me.

I encourage you as members of the guild and of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to be examples. Keep your language and dress clean and modest. Follow the prophet. Invite your friends to learn more about the gospel and seek to remove contention from the guild and from your lives.

I started this letter by stating that today had been a discouraging day - but the wonderful thing about being a missionary is that you are constantly in the service of God. In doing such, you feel the spirit testify to you that you are doing all right - that I am all that I can. In that sense I know that my Father in Heaven loves me and is watching all that I do.

Sincerely,
Elder Matt Bennion, AKA paladin140

P.S. If any of you would like to write to me, please either post in this thread (CA or DWK will print it off and send it to me) or write me at:

Elder Matthew Douglas Bennion
Nevada Las Vegas Mission
3127 E Warm Springs Rd. Ste 200
Las Vegas, NV USA
89120-3134

You could also pm Ca or DWK with a message saying Letter for Paladin. They will print them off and send them and the replies in this thread in about 2 weeks.
