I guess I joined this guild not knowing as much as I thought. I'd like to learn more from you all. Can we start with the characters? smile

Well. The best way to get acquainted with a character is to, er, watch the anime? razz

But, from memory:

Kenshin Himura - C'mon, you gotta at least understand this guy. razz

Kaoru Kamiya - Dojo leadery girl who is Kenshin's primary love interest throughout the series.

Sanosuke Sagara - Resident Badass. Wielded a Hugeass Sword called the Zanbato in his first two episodes, but had it destroyed by Kenshin at the end of the second. He doesn't pay his restaurant tab, he gambles, and his friends do Teh Drugzorz, I think.

Yahiko Miyojin - That N might not be there, not sure. A young teenager with a short temper who's learning the Kamiya-Kasshin style from Kaoru. He, uh, sucks.

Dr. Genkai and the Two Little Girls Whose Names I Forget - An old doctory dude and his two granddaughters. They provide comic relief, mostly, even though Everybody does that.

There's some others that I'm forgetting right now, but yeah, that's the base cast. I'd look guys up on Wikipedia for more info.

The two little girl's names are Ayame(taller one) and Suzume(younger one). They are both Dr. Gensai(Not Genkai. That's off of YYH! x3). And another thing, Yahiko does not suck... You tell that to Taiyo-chan and she'll straighten you out, mister. >> Also, Kenshin is Yahiko's role-model. He may be a brat, but in a way, he's determind and protective. He sticks like glue, for better or worse. ^_^

Also, about Sanosuke(once known as Zanza, the Fighter for Hire--aka-- My one and only love <3)'s friends... They don't do drugs. Megumi, the doctor vixen, made opeaum or something, and the drug was given away to a friend of Sano's, who thought it was meds, not something that could kill him. Yes, yes, they do gamble, but they don't do drugs. I'm sure there were drugs in Japan somewhere in that time, but Sanosuke's friends don't do drugs...

Now I'm sure you won't mind if I go into great detail with the characters...

Kenshin Himura-
Hiko Seijuro's student, Kenshin, was once known as the Legendary Man-slayer, Hitokiri Battousai. He was an assassin/killer. Yep, then one day, he (accidently) kill the love of his life, Tomoe. He then disappeared, and changed into the gentle and wandering Kenshin Himura that we all love and care for. The rurouni/wanderer then met Koaru later on...

Koaru Kamiya-
For a while before Koaru met Kenshin, there was a horrible ugly and tall man useing and abuseing the name 'Hitokiri Battousai'. This man claimed to use Koaru's sword style, which affected her dojo very much. Her students all quit, and she had to fight this imposter on her own. She mets Kenshin one night, and seeing that he had a sword( which is now a reverse-blade sword), she mistaken him for the imposter. Once Kenshin proved he was innocent, she continued her search for the imposter. She found him that night after meeting Kenshin, and got injured in the battle. Kenshin saved her, and found his way to her dojo, where an old man(NOT Dr. Gensai) helped with her wounds. She convinced the Rurouni to stay that night, and later one in the story(sorry to spoil the first book for ya) the old guy ends up to be the imposters older brother, and they try to talk Koaru into giving them her dojo, but then Kenshin comes and saves the day, and they run away or lay on the floor passed out or something, blah blah blah, Kenshin stays with Koaru in the dojo(since Kaoru threatened him xD rofl... Well... in a way she did, I guess).

Yahiko Myojin(One of Taiyo's fave bishies >.>)-
Yahiko is the descendant of a samurai. Yahiko's father died during the Battle of Ueno (of the Boshin War,) slain at the Keneiji Temple. His mother died of syphilis in a brothel to put food on their table not long after giving birth to her son. Yahiko was originally forced to live as a thief for the local Yakuza, who tricked him into believing that he still had to pay off the money the gangsters gave to his mother to buy medicine. But with the help of Himura Kenshin and Kamiya Kaoru, he becomes an apprentice of the Kamiya Kasshin style. Yahiko is a hotheaded child. He is arrogant, a potty-mouth, and bad-mannered; and he already bestowed upon himself the title 'Tokyo Samurai'. But, as the years go by, Yahiko learns the principles of Kasshin Kamiya-Ryū, which coincides with Kenshin's ideals. Even though he overrates himself, Yahiko defeats several enemies - even one of Shishio's henchmen. In time Yahiko becomes a master swordsman. He inherits Kenshin's sakabatou until Kenji is able to fight with it.

Sanosuke Sagara-
Sanosuke, who has the alias "Zanza", is the last of the Sekihoutai, who fought in the imperial alliance at the end of the Tokugawa regime. Sanosuke means "left-help" in Japanese. He left home at an early age to join the Sekihoutai, leaving behind his father (Kamishimoemon), his mother (Naname), and his younger sister (Uki) who adored him. He would return home years later to discover that his mother was dead, having died a couple of years after the birth of his younger brother, Outa, who immediately began to admire Sanosuke for his bravery and boldness. Sanosuke would also found out that his family name was now Higashidani, although he would never use it himself. Sanosuke initially bore a hatred for all former Imperialists. The reason that he is the last of the Sekihoutai is because his captain, Sagara Souzo, and his followers, were executed by the Meiji police for impersonating the imperial army and spreading false allegations about low rice prices. This setup was engineered by Shindō Tatewake, a former officer in the imperial alliance.
Sanosuke, full of anger and bitterness, made a living as a fighter-for-hire who bore the nickname "Zanza" derived from his weapon, the zanbatō. He was hired to kill Himura Kenshin, but after being defeated by the former assassin and learning of Kenshin's no-kill approach, Sanosuke becomes a valuable ally. He later adopts a boxing-like fighting skill.

Megumi Takani
Megumi is the youngest daughter of Takani Ryūsei, a well-known doctor in Aizu which was an important province supporting the Tokugawa Shogunate. During the Boshin Wars, Megumi's father died and the rest of her family went missing, leaving her as the sole survivor. Megumi means "Blessing" in Japanese.

Takani Megumi was said to have been born in December 1857 during the Bakumatsu period of Japan. That would make her 22 years old during the start of the anime. Hers was a family of doctors who are adept at renguku, a type of medical practice that combined elements of Western and Eastern medicine. The fact that Megumi bore the last name 'Takani' spoke of her family's higher class level as peasants during that time were forbidden to carry family names. Megumi was portrayed both in the anime and in the manga as having long, dark hair and dark eyes. In the anime particularly, she usually wore a blue haori worn over a lavender kimono. Sometimes, Megumi appeared to have fox ears popping out of her head, an allusion to her nickname kitsune, which means "fox." Sanosuke especially liked to call her kitsune-onna, meaning Fox Lady, though Yahiko and Kaoru sometimes called her by this name.

The nickname actually has two meanings. 'Fox' to describe Megumi's wily ways and 'fox' like in a compliment - "foxy lady" or beautiful woman.

... Sanosuke still hates Megumi's guts, though... ^^ *glomps Sano*

Well now, Mister--*glances at your name*--... erm... *it's to long for her to say it with a "Mr"* -_- There's as much detail as I can put it. If it's too much to read... Well... deal with it. You wanted info, you got info. xD

Terri made a very nice bio of the main characters. ^^ Me likes beaucoups. And yes... Yahiko is a lot more than he lets on. I would go into a very long rant about it, but Terri has pretty much what I wanted to say. The Jinchuu arc really shines some light on this little guy. I find that he's a little more arrogant in the anime than the manga though. However, I also find that in the manga, he's a little more grumpy at times. XD

Also, I'm saving this spot for the Juppogatana. XD I'll write something up on them all when I have the time.

I do watch the anime...or at least I used to when it was still on. I have two of the DVDs and 25 of the Manga books. I just don't/didn't have any background on the characters. That's all.

whoa....um, no offense, but after reading 25 graphic novels, shouldn't you have the basic background of all the characters? there are some characters in the anime that arn't in the manga like dr. gensai, ayame, and suzume but if you've got two dvd's you've probably have seen them. don't worry, i think The Only Dragon Goddess's (sorry i don't know your name, i'm sorta new) detailed description is enough for someone who has never heard of rurouni kenshin in his/her life to understand the basics, and some more...and more...
PostPosted: Tue Apr 11, 2006 8:54 pm

Actually, Dr. Gensai is in the manga, just not as much as the anime.

Well, if you read the mangas, do they not have a little synopsis of the characters at the beginning of every one? It even updates you on what's going on with them most of the time if I'm not mistaken. o.o;

Um...the little girls are Ayame and Suzume.

I love Yahiko too. It's understandable that he would have an attitude after surviving on the streets so long.

Definantly. I'd probably be like that too, if I had to steal and work for the Yakuza for a living.
