It always felt a bit funny that people in Finland have to learn my mother language. I mean, what the heck. As a Swede the first thing you learn is that your language is ugly and that your country is unimportant. Sweden isn't even the official language of Sweden. And just a couple of miles to the east lots of people work hard to learn how to speak it. It's such a contradiction.

I think they have to learn it because people whose language isn't similar to it tend to find it extremely difficult to learn(after all studies shown ,say that Finnish is the worlds hardest language).

I heard that Basque was the world's hardest language? It's probably in the top 10 but Finnish is much harder It has been proven to be as the most diffcult for one to learn it has 15 cases, takes more study time, and it's real hard to read

Yeah I've heard that too... but something about how it's read and how it's spoken is what is making it hard to pronounce.......A relative of mine learned it and 2 years in finland he wasn't really fluent until the end of his trip.

I've heard it's because of some agreement who some politicians did...they make us learn Swedish at school and we'll gain something for it. Or that's what I've heard. For me, Swedish is hard. I'm not sure why...I'm supposed to be good with languages. sad
