So cold and dark... He could feel the hands that grabbed him, pushed him into asphault... The mocking laughter, the familiar taste of his own blood in his mouth... A choked sob came from his lips as he felt a foot make contact with his side, and he instinctively clutched the area that had been assaulted.

"That'll teach ya' to mess with us, Crevan."

The sneer in the others voice sent a shiver down his spine. He knew what was going to happen next. The slight russling of fabric, and then the click of a handgun being prepared for a shot. The ear-splitting crack...

Crevan nearly leapt out of his bed, heart pounding and eyes wide with terror. He'd had that dream again... No, that nightmare...

A slightly muffled whine met his ears, and he glanced down at the pillow next to his. Leil had woken up, and was already crawling into the man's lap, rubbing his head against his owner's hand. With a heavy sigh, Crevan smiled down at the Fennec and groped to his left to find his glasses. He needed to get out of the house for a little while...

~~~
It wasn't long after, that Crevan was in the library. Leil was nestled up in his arms, his bright vest displaying his status all the curious eyes that had been directed towards him. The head librarian nodded to the man out of recognition, and he gave her a grateful smile in return.
There were many reasons why Crevan both hated and adored this particular library. Not only did they have an extensice collection of his favorite books, but they were also open through the night; but the building was so large that every sound echoed throughout it. The sound of his own footsteps always sent a chill down his spine, but his usual spot wasn't that far away.
He was slightly flattered to notice that a book had already been set out on 'his' table for him, and he gave a soft smile as he sat down in one of the plush chairs that decorated the reading area. He transferred Leil to his lap, and the Fennec only opened one eye to glance at his master before he went back to his nap.
The book had a rather decorative bookmark sticking slightly out of the top, and Crevan was happy to lift it from it's place on the table and flip to the marked page. The bookmark was set aside for later use as he began to read, emerald eyes scanning the pages contently as he absently began to stroke Leil's silky fur.
"Treasure Island." A smile came to the girl's face as she found the book she was looking for. She took it from the shelf and began walking for the tables.
She noticed someone sitting where she sometimes sat, but thought nothing of it. She took the seat across from him. The book slipping out of her hands and falling on the ground.
The landing echoed through the library, and Evan couldn't help but blush.
Leil's head instantly jerked upwards, his large ears pricked forward and the fur on his tail bristling. Crevan flinched at the sudden echo of the sound of the book hitting the floor, and almost instantly moved so he could pick up up. As he transferred the book back to Evan, his hand brushed against hers ever so slightly, and he gave a soft smile.
"You best be careful, miss. Wouldn't want anything to happen," he said in a lighthearted tone, idly glancing at the book she'd chosen. He wasn't particularly fond of the book, but he still liked it. "Good choice of reading material."
Leil seemed to have calmed down after a moment, and curiously hopped up onto the table, his nose twitching as he catiously took in Evan's scent.
Evan smiled lightly, and nodded, "Thank you," She sat again, and looked at Leil as he approached her end of the table. She couldn't help but chuckle lightly as he started sniffing her.
She let her hand rest open for him to sniff, and waited for his approval for her to pet him.
"What an adorable animal," She said softly, not wanting to make any more echoes in the large library.
"A Fennec Fox, in case you're curious," Crevan offered, smiling softly as Leil nudged at her hand. "His name's Leil."
The little Fennec had lived with Crevan for almost five years now, and he was beginning to slow down just a bit since the man had first adopted him. But Leil was still as affectionate as ever, although sometimes catious. After all, the tiny creature saw it as his duty to keep an eye out for his partner.
She smiled as Leil nudged her hand, and scratched behind his ear, gently so as not to hurt his sensitive hearing.
"It's nice to meet you, Leil," she said, to the Fox, smiling again.
She looked up at Crevan, and smiled, "My name's Evan... Evan Yorke."
"I'm Bryce Phelan among those of the Goddess Religion, and Crevan Lee Moore to the rest," he explained softly, smiling towards Evan. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Evan."
Leil was happy to get skritched behind his ear, and he shifted slightly so he could sit down, eyes closed out of contentment.
"Likewise, Crevan." Evan smiled, and went back to Leil, he was so adorable!
"I haven't been here often, I'm still not used to the loudness of the echoes... I'm sorry about dropping the book and breaking your concentration." She blushed, her free hand tucking hair behind her ear.
"It's no problem. I wasn't really concentrating on my book anyways," Crevan said lightly, his emerald eyes growing distant for a moment.
A slight bark-like noise from Leil snapped him out of his thoughts, and he gave a nervous laugh.
"I only came here because I needed to get out of my house..."
"Oh," Evan bit her lip, "Trouble with the family?"
She suddenly felt alone. She was in another country, she actually MISSED when she argued with her mother. Her accent wasn't at all that strong, she sounded more english than Australian.
"Wanna talk about it? If you don't mind my prying..." Her hand continued scartching behind Leil's ear, moving to the top of his head for a moment.
"No, nightmares. It has to do with my childhood," Crevan said, a rueful smile forming on his face. He wasn't really that close to his family any more... When he'd announced that he was Wiccan, his mother practically disowned him. Now, the only family he had was Leil.
The Fennec made a content noise, somewhat like a purr, that rippled through his throat. He was happy to get attention... Well, just more attention than usual.
"Oh," she replied. She gave a sympethetic half-smile.
She wasn't sure what to say, now. Should she ask? Was it her place to ask?
"Leil certainly likes the attention, huh?" Oh great, nice move idiot. She blushed very slightly, having just made a fool of herself.
