Chana walked somewhat furtively through the darkened village. Her body was relatively sore from the changes and demanded replenishment. So, tail drooping, the beaver girl was heading for the cafeteria.
Of course...the whole business of not wanting to be noticed was offset by the small flashlight in her hand with which she was reading from the thick book in her other hand.
She wasn't entirely unaware of what was around her, she was simply trusting to scent to keep her away from certain people.

Stewart has finally returned to the village, after months of living it PETA style it felt good to finally return to the village. And after a long shower and a short nap he decided it was time for a real meal. It was late enough that he probably wouldn't run into too many people, but as he was walking he noticed someone walking with a flashlight. Wondering who else would be out this late, he started in their direction

Chana paused and looked up. She smelled...somebody. And it was somebody she'd scented before. Unfortunately, she hadn't truly relied on scent to identify people previously, so she couldn't tell who it was. Great.
At least she was pretty sure it wasn't Jamal or Zach, and those were the only two people she wanted to avoid at all costs.
"Hello?" she called out, hesitantly. She hadn't really wanted to see anyone again so soon after the changes...her flat tail twitched nervously.

He heard a voice, female, he knew that voice...But who? Was is Chana? He thought walking closer to her, still not noticing her recent changed. After a few seconds he asked "Chana, is that you?"

"S-stewart!?" she gasped, recognizing the priset's voice. Oh...of all the people it had to be...Chana groaned inwardly. Stewart was probably the last person she wanted to see (aside from the two dangerous ones) just after she'd changed.
"What're you doing out so late?" she asked nervously, trying not to fidget. Her tail, a limb she was still unused to having, twitched some more.

Oh good, he thought very glad that he finally caught up with her again. But why did she sound so nervous, walking closer to her he said "I was about to ask you the same thing" He paused for a minute chuckling "I finally got out of that God-awful forest, and I felt like getting a real meal. Where were you heading to?

Chana swallowed and smiled at him, though he probably couldn't see it. "Same place, actually," she replied, clamping her mouth shut afterward on the hysterical giggle she felt bubbling up.
Of all the people on the island, Stewart was one of those whose presence tongue-tied her. She glanced down at her book for inspiration. Parashat Shemot. Hmmm.
"Passover's soon," she said, trying to keep the conversation from dying. As soon as the words were out of her mouth she remembered that the priest hadn't known she was Jewish. Um...whoops? Not like it mattered anyway, right?

"Oh really?" He said smiling "Care to join me then?" Then what she just said sunk in...Passover? Wasn't that a Jewish holiday. He couldn't help but then ask "...Are you Jewish?"

Chana's heart leapt when he asked her to join him for...well, it was probably a very late dinner. "Sure!" she replied.
Then his next question brought her back down to reality. She felt her cheeks grow warm under the fur (and had to wonder if you could see a blush under it). "Um...yes. I am," she told him, gesturing at the book. In the tight beam of the flashlight, it was easy to see that the top third of each page was in Hebrew.

"Oh..." He said pausing a few seconds. The fact that she was Jewish wasn't that bad, it was a huge improvement on the gothic girl's pagan Norse rituals. Anyways, Chana was the only other sane person on the island that he had met. He wasn't about to ruin his relations with her. After this pause he said "That's nice, so when exactly is Passover?"

She could have shouted for joy when it became clear that, whatever Stewart's feelings about different religions, he wasn't going to pursue them here and now. But back to his question...Chana thought back to her handy calendar.
"The first seder is on April twelfth...do you think maybe they'd let us have one?" she asked suddenly. After all, the island clearly celebrated Christmas...why not observe other religions' holidays? At the very least she'd like to see a seder plate somewhere.
Of course...what would the priest think? She knew that there were some sects of Christianity that did seders...but she was under the impression that it wasn't overly common.

Ah, the seder plate. While his sect didn't have them, he did have know other priests who still had them and celebrated the Holy Day. "They should," He said nodding "I would request one though, Moreau probably isn't too up to date on his religious holidays..."

"Yeah...tomorrow I'll see if I can get one and some haggadot. After all, Dr. Duvert got me a hannukeah and candles in December." Chana was practically skipping inside, she was so excited. Passover--always one of her favorites--and Stewart together.
Her tail was swishing back and forth happily behind her, reflecting her mood as always. She turned to Stewart. "You'll come to the seder, won't you?" she asked, brown eyes pleading silently.

"I promise" He said smiling moving a little closer to Chana. His eyes widened in surprize when he finally got a good look at her now furry face. "Oh Chana..." He said softly "When did change again?"

Chana could have jumped for joy as Stewart moved closer...
...and then the changes got in the way of the moment. She looked away, swallowing the tears she felt building and composing herself. Then she looked back at him. "Today. I left my duplex just after they finished," she told him quietly. It was a sobering thought that the things could come so quickly and still leave their victim able to...to function afterwards.
Well...maybe the people in charge weren't too particular about mental functions. But the depressing thoughts were weighing down her exuberance of just moments ago over the coming holiday, and she didn't want to worry Stewart.
"I'm okay," she said, smiling a bit. "Or at least I will be once I've eaten."
