About Marshmallow Peeps 1910 - Sam Born, who as a child and young adult grew up in Russia, immigrated to the United States from France. Born introduced "French Chocolates" to New York City.
1917 - Born opened a small retail candy store in New York. He would display daily-made candy in his store window, marketing its freshness with a sign that declared, "just born".
1923 - Born opened a small factory in Brooklyn, New York. Additionally, Born's brothers-in-law, Irv and Jack Shaffer, joined the company shortly after the retail stored opened.
1932 - Just Born moved its operations to an empty printing factory Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
1953 - Just Born acquired Rodda Candy Company of Lancaster. Although better known for its jelly bean technology, Rodda also made a small line of marshmallow products that fascinated the Just Born family. A three-dimensional marshmallow Easter PEEPS was made by hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes.
About Marshmallows Technically, marshmallows are a confection -- a candy. They've been around in the form we know them since the mid-1800s.
They are called "marshmallows" because part of the early recipe called for sap from the root of the marshmallow plant.
According to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, a marshmallow is:
1: a pink-flowered European perennial herb (Althaea officinalis) of the mallow family that is naturalized in the eastern U.S. and has a mucilaginous root sometimes used in confectionery and in medicine; 2: a confection made from the root of the marshmallow or from corn syrup, sugar, albumen, and gelatin beaten to a light spongy consistency
That word "mucilaginous" means "jelly-like." Later, the root was replaced by gelatin, and that is how modern marshmallows are made. ((Source: How Stuff Works and www.marshmallowpeeps.com))
