Mysterious Mail: ( 8 ) : The mail is always bad this time of year, but it seems like something's gone a little extra wrong. You’ve received something that’s not quite right. Maybe it’s a box that looks like it’s from a completely different era, wrapped in brown paper and tied with dark twine. The box has scuffs and scrapes and a yellowed name tag--with your name and address on it. There is no return address and no indication where it came from. If you open it up you will find some sort of timeless item that feels as though it is easily decades old. It may not be particularly valuable, but this item seems to have been lost to time--and somehow ended up in your possession. Any time you look at it you are filled with the same sensation of timelessness.
Maybe it’s an old letter with no return address, no name on it; it's impossible to tell who it is from or how it got there, given that it might have arrived in your mailbox, your front door, or maybe it even just showed up inside your house. If you open it, the letter is dated from decades ago and contains some surprising information; it is a letter lost to time and contains some secret. The content of the letter is up to the player; it might contain a confession of love, an admission of guilt, the secret of some crime--no matter what the letter contains, it leaves you with news to reflect on. Do you try to seek out anyone mentioned in the letter? Do you investigate or try to hand the letter over to someone else? Does the content of the letter reflect your life in some way? ...Do you have to worry about someone breaking into your house to leave strangely coded messages?
Maybe you’ve gotten both and really need to phone up the post office to see what’s going on.-/quote]
"Mail!"
Eric's small voice rang out and Cherish looked up from her work laptoip, setting it down as the nine year old approached and offered her a pile of mail items, all three boys sprinting to sit beside her in the curiousity o9f youth as Cherish silently filtered through it. Of course, the mail was largely the usual, packed with bills she paid online and found themselves tossed in the fireplace, junk mail that joined it, an awkward Christmas Card from her grandfather Louis, and finally an aged p[ackage, with faded ink lisating her name and address. It was wrapped in brown paper and black twine. Cherish tensed instantly and leaned in, listening. Examining. No odd wires. No ticking. Slowly, Cherish unbound it, revealing a lewtter in dry paper and... Cherish blinked, staring in.
Ot wasn't a large box. It was cardboard and small, a sheep skin inside protecting the contents. Cherish removed it all, and slowly began unwrapping the sheepskin. It was black and soft, supple, and well made, but the boys gasped as the item within came into view.
It was simple. It was carved of bone, a small pendant in the shape of a heart with symbols etched into it, hung on a silver chain and coated in a protective resin. But of the color left no doubt what it was. It would fit perfectly, making Cherish's stomach turn ad a second item fell out, a riub covered in etched symbols and carvings. Cyrus stiffened and covered his eyes. Eric inhaled and moved to cover the twins' eyes. Eos stared.
Cherish slowly traIiled her fingers on bone, bare and unprotected, frowning in alarm before Eos spoke.
"Cool..."
"Not cool!" Cherish spun, huffing at Eos. Eos looked unrepentant but Cherish groaned, looking down at her hands before Eos handed her the letter. Cherish shook her head and opened it slowly. The letter unfurled with the scent of motor oil, cheap cologne, and ink. Cherish looked, examining the letter before frowning, reading it alopud.
"Dear Cherish," SAhe began.
"I hope this does not frighten you. I live nearby with my little brothers and I nopticed you live close by. I admit that I didn't think much originally of it, but I saw you helping my brother Levi. You helped Levi home from bullies beating him up after he talked to one of the young boys who visit you and ever since I've been watching. I confess not knowing if I should introduce myself properly. I am not good with people. But you helped Levi when others do not. I've seen you. You are kind, and brilliant, and beautiful.
I am not. You are the very light of the day, and I am a black shadow lurking in the dark unworthy of one smile in my direction. But I confess I find myself falling. I find myself wanting to imagine a future. But I know I am not.... Typical. I am raising my brothers. I am angry and difficult. I... Don't want to be frightening to you. I do not want to darken your life. But I also wanted you to know this season someone sees. Someone adores you. I made these as tokens of my affection. I know bone is not xconventional, or... Normal. It is sheep's bone. I carved it myself. The rib is for your home and the pendant for you. I am pagan and wanted to protect you in my way if it is... Alright. I am not good at words, but... I hope you are safe. I hope you are well."
Cherish bliunked, brows furrowing.
"No signature and this is terribly weirdly romantic." Cherish admitted. She always assumed love was straightforward but this was.... Oddlly charming. Then she blinked. Shjje recalled Levi, Eric's friend. A slightly older boy but he looked after the younger boys in the neighborhood, and lived with--
"Wait, Lex?" Cherish managed. She rose to her feet, surprised. All three boys watched mnow. Eric was surprised. Cyrus giggled. Eos was blank, analytically staring. She'd noticed the man around. He rode a motorcycle. She actually thought him handsome, iuf... Quiet. She was quiet, then opened her smart phone, checking her bank app, and sighed, rising to her feet.
"Pizza night." Cherish announced. Eric nodded, Cyrus cheering, and Eos watched, speaking.
"Sis? Are you talking to Mr. Lex?" Eos asked. All three knew who Levi was, and Cherish faltered.
"Yes." She admitted. Eos nodded, and all four filtered out to invite Lex abnd his own brothers to their house for pizza night.
