the gameboard

Carterhaugh felt as if he was still acclimating to the strangeness that eternally permeated Destiny City. Leaving had reset his expectations--as if he hadn't come back to the end of the world. But that had been so extraordinary, and they hadn't chased nearly as much as they wanted to, after. There had been so much to do to resettle into a life left behind in Destiny City, and so much to do at the university, and summer classes to take, and then fall, and--

They were doing their best to fit being Carterhaugh around being Ashe, but perhaps not succeeding as much as they might have liked. But they'd worked on their thesis, some, and needed a break, and it was late enough in the evening to feel good about slipping into Carterhaugh's flowing dress and go for a little walk.

They weren't sure what they were looking for. They were sure that it was not a strange wooden die, and yet they bent to pick it up anyway.

Probably a foolish idea. Especially when they suddenly found themself very much somewhere...else.

Somewhere liminal. Somewhere that was definitely not a Wonder--it felt more like the place-between-places where they and so many others had fought the Herald of the Dark Star.

Hopefully, this would not be that again.

They took a deep breath, looked down at the die, and decided. It seemed like the only way forward was to roll.

Space 4: Something smells rotten. You can’t see very far into the darkness, but if you squint closely a dark form seems to be dragging itself along the ground. Sometimes you see a pale hand almost close enough to grab you–or, maybe something does grab you. It’s cold, and frightening, and it’s trying to drag you out of bounds.

And roll they did, and down the spaces they moved, warily watching the darkness around them as they went. It was...strange. Certainly ominous. And the place they stopped did not feel any less so.

It was foggy and strange, and there was...movement in the fog. Oh,,, that wasn't good. Strange, scraping movement, and--

And a cold, white hand wrapping around his ankle.

Carterhaugh screamed, and kicked back at whatever was holding him, and took off running, rolling his die as he went.

Space 7: Something is twitching and flapping above you, and while you might be minding your own business, something is a little too invested in what you’re doing. You can’t see them, but you suddenly hear shrill, high pierced noises that are disorienting and confusing. They can bring about dizziness and pain and can cause vertigo if you’re stuck in them for too long.

The feeling of being watched, he thought, was not an improvement over being grabbed by strange undead things in the fog. Frankly, it actually might have been worse. He felt like he was being sized up--just waiting for whatever was there to dive down and go for him.

And then it came. Horrible, awful shrieks that made him stagger and clamp his hands over his ears. The die fell from his fingers and rolled, and he hoped that was good enough, because Carterhaugh did not want to find out what was out there in the dark, screaming a dizzying chorus.

Taking his hand off his ear to grab the die did not feel good, but it was necessary. He couldn't lose the only thing that would let him keep going forward.

Space 11: You hear a frantic flapping above you, but that’s all the warning you get before a hoard of bats descend. They scratch and slap and screech, but you avoid getting bitten. For now. You’ve invaded their space and they seem keen to defend it. You can try to fight them, but the only way to escape them is to roll again.

Carterhaugh was not excited when his next space, too, greeted him with the sound of flapping wings. At least this time there were no awful screams--though a sudden descent of hordes of bats wasn't much better.

At least there were no little fangs sinking into him, just a new kind of awful screech and the slapping of wings against the arm he raised to try and cover his head.

"This is bullshit," he hissed, running forward and rolling his die again.

Space 17: Something howls in the distance. It’s loud and echoes with such ferocity it seems to shake you. On the other side of you–another howl. Closer. This one is loud enough to hurt your ears. The ground trembles with the force of something charging at you. A growl, a snarl. Yellow eyes staring you down. There’s not just one monster out there–there’s several, and they’re all coming for you.

They were almost expecting a third space full of flapping wings, when they came to their next destination. It was a relief when that didn't happen--when there was nothing flying down to harass them, and no ominous flapping int he distance.

Frankly, after getting directly dive-bombed, an eerie howl in the distance didn't feel quite so nerve-wracking. It wasn't pleasant, no, but it didn't feel nearly as immediately threatening.

Still, whatever had made the sound sounded...well, large. And Carterhaugh was not eager to find out what it might be. Especially when another howl came, and the sound of something charging--

It was time to get the hell out rather than find out what was going to pounce out of the darkness.

Space 20: The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

Fortune favored them, and Carterhaugh was more than willing to accept that favor. As their feet carried them down the squares to the final one, they let out a breath of relief. The warm, welcoming opalescent light carried them back to Destiny City, and when they were on familiar soil again, they took a moment to consider--and decided that perhaps that was enough excitement for one night.

Plenty to do at home, after all. And the die would make a fine reminder that no matter what, Destiny City remained thoroughly, fascinatingly strange.
