24 years and a day ago... The school had opted not to tell us what happened, so I didn't know until I got home and had plopped down to play Super Mario 64 in the living room. Mom asked me if I'd heard what happened and we turned on the news to see about the towers falling.
It was terrible. Those poor people. So many lives were lost. We all wondered just where would be hit next, worried it would be near, but we came together.
I went around the neighborhood, praying with some people from my local church (needed to explain it to some who couldn't quite hear the tv, so didn't know what happened).
We honor those who gave their lives to save so many and remember those lost.
I will never forget that day in history. It doesn't even feel like that long ago.
I'd love to go to the memorial museum one day. I'm kind of curious about the new One World Trade Center, but so far as I'm aware, only the observation decks are really open to tourists?
I do know some remarkable stories have come from survivors. One survived the collapse by huddling in a corner of the stairs as things were falling. He was extremely lucky!
I also heard about the town of Gander Newfoundland taking care of thousands of people whose flights were grounded that week. surprised That story was wonderful! The Broadway/West End musical Come From Away was based on that.
