Posters have been showing up all over Destiny City, advertising a…singing competition?

Seems someone’s putting together a boy band called Star Eclipse, and while 4 of 5 members have been chosen, they’re looking for a fifth. If you’re a young man, ages 18 to 25, and you like to sing….this could be your big break!

There’s also a promise of free food in the green room. So that’s as good a reason as any to show up.

The old Starbright Theater is now under new management, and it’s the location of the Star Search. The place has sat abandoned for years, but you wouldn’t know it, coming in; it’s been renovated and modernized, with comfortable seating and a great big plasma display behind the stage.

On stage, the four existing members of Star Eclipse—Vasily Voronin, Aleksey Lebedev, Rory Kae, and Emil Grimmstone—sit behind a metal folding table, in comfy-enough looking chairs, prepared to judge performances all day.

One at a time, aspiring band members will come on stage, and are asked to sing and dance to a song they’ve registered with. Vasha, Alyosha, Rory, and/or Emil will provide commentary within 48 hours OOC; auditioners are welcome to respond, but will not receive a second round of comments! There is no set order and auditioners may “overlap” OOC, but IC there will be one person on stage at a time and each auditioner will be given eight minutes of time.

Quote:
AS AN OOC NOTE, the winner of the competition has already been OOCly decided. This is not a concept contest, and there are no prizes except for the joy of silly RP! All of these threads are regulars, and will count for requirements as long as you get 500 words!

These are all freeform RPs, and there will be no prompts posted; the RPs will close on Friday, August 15th and characters can freely enter or leave at any time during those two weeks!

Rocking back in his chair, Rory grinned at the other members of Star Eclipse before waving at the people trickling in. As far as he was concerned, this was going to be fun! He liked to see what other people could do and if they could manage to find their fifth, he might not be cute as the maknae anymore! All good things!

He'd even dressed up for the occasion is tight jeans and a mesh cropped tank top could be said to fall into the realm of dressed. But the way he figured, if they were all going to be living and working together, they may as well know what they'd be dealing with. Not that he was at all difficult to deal with. In his own considered opinion, he was pretty great! But some people did get weird about guys wearing mesh.

He wanted to weed those sorts out.

"Oy, grandpa!" he put his chair back down and leaned in a little to grin at Alyosha. "What do you think? See anyone you like the looks of? Are you sure that we shouldn't be doing more to try and tempt people in?"

Aleksey Lebedev

Much more clothed than Rory, Alyosha stood in front of the table, with his back currently to the audience. Part of him—specifically part of him that had spent the past several months, even before leaving New York, trying to speedrun learning how to dance—couldn’t help thinking that it might have been a good starting position for some choreography. The vast majority of Alyosha remained grounded in reviewing notes he’d prepared with good questions to ask after each potential member’s audition.

Yet another part of him, however, had to just silently be grateful that Vasha had helped him pick his outfit. Nothing complicated—a lightweight black button-up (fairly new, thus tightly fitted), sleeves rolled up to help mitigate the heat; a new pair of tight black jeans; a pop of color in the blood red tie—but effective and better than Alyosha probably would’ve come up with on his own. Today was as much about advertising the boys already in Star Eclipse as it was about finding their fifth member, whoever he wound up being. Wouldn’t have done for Alyosha to give anyone the wrong impression by showing up in the wrong sort of outfit.

Or a shirt he’d gotten on one of the three dates when he and Vasha had gone to the Eras tour together.

At the question, Alyosha arched an eyebrow down at Rory. “Well, if you want to go outside and use yourself as bait, I’m sure that would be effective.” Everyone in town who was even the slightest bit attracted to men would probably come running for Rory’s abs, but he was confident enough without hearing that. “But on the other hand…” Alyosha glanced back over one shoulder to the first row, where Ms. Voronin sat, taking her own notes. “I don’t think Ms. Voronin would look too kindly on you doing that.”

With his piece said, Alyosha slipped behind the table and took a seat next to Vasha, on the other end of the table from Rory. The seating arrangements, he thought, should reflect their usual arrangement in choreography, which put Alyosha and Rory in the back, on opposite sides of Vasha, their leader and center.

Rory Kae

Eyes cutting back to where Ms Voronin sat, Rory grimaced slightly before nodding in, well... not agreement exactly. But definitely in understanding. Vasha's mother was formidable and he had zero desire to get on her bad side. Resuming his chair rocking, he sighed and allowed himself the smallest of pouts before resuming a sunny expression.

"Of course it'd be effective," he said cheerfully. "But I'll behave so don't worry, little granpa. Good 'fit by the way. You look sharp ey eff."

Then, because he didn't want anyone to feel left out, he practically beamed at his other bandmates, "You guys look great too! This is gonna be fun."

It was too bad that his parents hadn't been able to come out to watch this. He thought his mum would have enjoyed all the fuss and frills enormously.

711Todd

Wearing his nice shirt (no holes or doodles), his nice jeans (no holes or doodles), and his nice shoes (no holes or doodles), Todd wandered onto the stage with a slightly battered guitar covered in stickers. Yes, he came ready and willing to be That Guy at the audition. Manbun high, smelling like incense and Febreeze, he was absolutely ready to get this over with and take full advantage of the All Todd Can Eat (and pocket) lunch in the green room.

Clearing his throat, he gave his best low energy greeting into the mic, "I'm Todd Sideris." Then started to play a surprisingly decent White Guy With A Guitar rendition of Toxic. Was it great as an opener? No. But at least it clearly wasn't a gag attempt and he wasn't going for King of Cringe.

Inoffensively flying under the radar was Todd's greatest skill, and as he played the last few notes, he felt he did a good enough job to merit being allowed to raze the green room catering until the end of the show.

Ilian Jones

Technically, he was there on assignment.

Unofficially.

Self-imposed.

Ilian had known about the Star Eclipse audition weeks before the posters went up. Negaverse intelligence, of course, courtesy of internal chatter between General Sovereigns. The band had promise, apparently. The power that fame carried. Natural charisma. The kind of public attention you couldn’t always buy, but you could help it develop and grow.

So Ilian had volunteered to keep an eye on things. To observe and blend in.

There was no expectation for it, and maybe it was both unnecessary and over the top, but he was never told he couldn’t also audition.

He’d told Lovely the night before, while they were relaxing after unpacking from their vacation out of the country. The look Lovely gave him in response could have made a weaker man run for the hills. Ilian had a difficult time not grinning through the whole exchange.

“We literally just got home from vacation.”

“I know,” Ilian had replied with a shrug and a grin. “But how often do you get a chance to try out for a boy band?”

And that was how he ended up backstage at the newly renovated Starbright Theater, wearing silver pants, black boots, a glittery rhinestone netted cropped top that read “TOO SAD TO CARE,” and a second-hand leather jacket that hung off one shoulder. His hair was curled and fluffed to perfection and his fingers covered in rings, a thin chain at his throat, black eyeliner, and enough shimmer on his cheeks that he was almost worried about being blinded when the stage lights hit him. Most of the outfit he had to purchase, but the shirt and jewelry were on loan from Lovely. He’d brought a keyboard and fake ID that said 23… even though he’d just turned 26 last week.

He looked good. Even if he usually didn’t care about his appearance, today he wanted to have fun. He thought he’d done a pretty good job. Well, with Lovely’s reluctant help.

The lights hit him as he stepped out onto the stage once it was his turn. The current four members of Star Eclipse sat behind a table. Ilian flashed them a quick smile. He adjusted his mic and gave a short bow before setting up his keyboard.

Just as they were observing him, he was observing them. He watched to see if any of them sat up, if any rolled their eyes, if any were attentive and respectful of his time, even though he already knew the outcome of his own performance. He was sure Lovely and Misha were paying attention as well.

“This is a cover,” he said, brushing his curls back from his face. “I’m not here to win. I just like a challenge. Hope you enjoy.”

As It Was, slowed down and reimagined as an angsty piano ballad spilled from the keys. His voice was low and unpretentious. Steady and genuine, shaped by long hours of practice and a deep love for music. He didn’t over-perform, because he didn’t need to.

He moved partway through, letting the music guide his feet into simple choreography, his jacket falling from his shoulder in a practiced shrug. His dance wasn’t polished, but it had energy and personality. His voice and music were his strength, rather than dance. There was just enough flair to make it clear that if he wanted to take this seriously… he probably could.

Ilian wasn’t exactly someone who backed down from challenges.

By the last note, he was a little breathless. Ilian straightened, his smile soft and a little self-conscious. He placed a hand over his chest in a respectful gesture as he glanced at the panel of judges.

“I’m not planning to stay in the competition,” he admitted, his voice a bit lighter now, still a bit winded from the performance. “I’ve got too much going on. But I really love music, and I think anytime you get the chance to share what you love with people, you should take it.”

He paused, a grin tugging at his lips.

“And I heard there were snacks.”

He offered one final bow, polite and formal, then turned to leave with his keyboard.

As he stepped off the stage, a strange feeling tugged in his chest unexpectedly.

Sorin would have laughed at all of this. The audition. The sparkly shirt. The idea of him in a boy band. He would have listened, just as he always had. Maybe even given a few pointers.

And maybe… just maybe… he would have been proud.

Ilian didn’t let the thought settle for too long. He drew in a steady breath, tucked his keyboard under his arm, and slipped into the wings. No need to look back.

Stage left, as always.

Aleksey Lebedev @ 7-11 Todd

Rory behaving himself was a good sign. Maybe using the threat of “Ms. Voronin won’t like it” counted as a low blow on Alyosha’s part, but it got the job done and had the benefit of being true. Less of a threat, more of a promise, in the way of Russian mothers who brooked no arguments once they’d made up their minds about something. Not that anything would allow Alyosha to properly relax until all of this was over, but if Rory was content to fidget but not leave his seat, that was one less thing to worry about.

So much the better, too, because the first young man coming out to audition seemed like several things to worry about stacked together in a questionable package found in some long-neglected back-corner of an I-95 rest stop plaza, somewhere between Newark and Baltimore but probably a hundred miles from anything worth caring about. While the guy’s performance of “Toxic” wasn’t bad—Alyosha recognized on some level that it really wasn’t bad, that it did speak to an amount of practice—it also failed, in Alyosha’s mind, to cross the threshold into being good. Plus, there was a distinct lack of any movement, and while Alyosha identified with the struggle of not being a dancer, some effort would’ve been nice.

Trying not to look too openly uneasy, Alyosha glanced over at Vasha. Lacking anything that at all resembled telepathy, he still tried to emanate a vibe of Do I have to take this seriously, Vasha? Like, really?? Can’t I please just ask him to tell us he’s not serious and get him off the stage? in the hopes that maybe, Vasha would pick up on it and understand. As he looked back at the guy with the thoroughly bestickered guitar, Alyosha tried to think of……any words he could say besides Tell me you’re not serious. Publicity mattered. Making a good impression on any future fans mattered. When they actually broke through, Alyosha could hang back more, or at least get away with being a b***h whose every word and facial expression made Vasha look so much better by comparison.

Until then, Alyosha had work to do.

Specifically, he had a face and tone to keep relatively neutral as he asked, “So……Todd? What drew you to that song for this?”

711 Todd

Oh. <********> For a moment, Todd had a decidedly hunted look. He hadn't realized there would be questions. Didn't these types of thing have buzzers judges could just hit, to minimize meaningful interaction to the few stand outs? Oh god, did he stand out? No. This judge was just bored. Or had low standards. Or maybe felt obligated since he'd gone first?

Clearing his throat, Todd explained, "It was my grandmother's favourite song." Tapping his chest with a finger, he then pointed into the air with a solemn, "For you, gran."

Rory Kae

For a moment, as the first applicant came out with a guitar, Rory wondered if they were being punked. The singing voice was passable, the guitar skills decent. But there was absolutely no way that this Todd guy was serious! And he only became further convinced of this as he sat and surreptitiously watched the expressions flickering across Alyosha's face. That alone made this all entirely worth it. And it was only through an extreme act of willpower that he didn't start braying with laughter as questions were asked and answered.

Who knew that granny had been a Brittany fan! It was absolute, utterly brilliant bullshit.

Watching Todd, Rory suddenly grinned at poor on the spot Todd and winked, mouthing the words Relax, dude. Have fun with it. But, true to his promise to Alyosha, he stayed quiet and otherwise behaved. Though he did glance over at his bandmates and very gently shake his head. Maybe Todd had lost a bet. Maybe he was just bored. It would be cruel to keep the poor guy on the spot.

But if he told more stories about Gramma, Rory would consider humoring him. This was supposed to be fun after all. Besides, what competition had ever found its winner in the very first to go on stage?

Aleksey Lebedev @ Ilian

Maybe Alyosha allowed himself to be biased by the sheer You aren’t here to take any of this seriously, are you? feeling that he’d gotten from Todd’s guitar rendition of “Toxic.” Maybe he was letting his judgment soften in the face of someone who seemed to be putting in any effort. Maybe he was won over—once he’d stifled the initial feeling of What are you smiling for? Are you up to something? that was his family’s cultural heritage and not fair to put on anyone else who just smiled to be polite—by the sheer nerve of opening a big audition by saying that you didn’t intend to win (that had to be part of the show, right? not anything meant in earnest?).

A pretty face didn’t hurt either. He only would’ve been Alyosha’s Type for a night or two (his real Type being significantly shorter and lither, blonder and with bluer eyes, far more femme and sitting right next to Alyosha, likely perfectly aware of what and how much he meant to Alyosha—maybe he wasn’t, but on the other hand, Vasha wasn’t stupid—but determined not to ruin their precious bond by saying anything about Alyosha’s true feelings out loud, as long as Alyosha upheld his part of this social contract and behaved). Still, you didn’t need to be some kind of genius to recognize that the brown-haired young man with the keyboard was objectively beautiful. One merely needed working eyes.

Either way, this audition had Alyosha’s rapt attention. His eager and willing attention, even, rather than the putting in effort because he had to but clearly not excited about it attention that Todd Sideris had gotten for his performance of “Toxic.” Notes were taken politely. Both flaws and strengths were jotted down—the dance that he offered, for instance, didn’t seem nearly as good as Vasha and Rory, but there was enough talent to work with and the confidence in performing covered up quite a lot—and Alyosha practically vibrated, eagerly awaiting the Q&A portion, when he could let this guy know how impressive he was. He had to be joking about not really intending to stay? Obviously, he wouldn’t have come and put in all this effort for no reason.

(Selfishly, it would’ve been nice, Alyosha thought, to not be the only one in the group who was perpetually on the back-foot about dancing, desperately trying to catch up so he didn’t sink the entire band because, until the past year or so, he’d never needed to know how to dance.)

Less selfishly, the group didn’t really have someone to fill the Lover Boy archetype yet. Rory could be the Heartthrob along with being their babyface and visual. Emil had the Adorable And Cute Dorky One game on lock—somebody less potentially intimidating for younger would-be fans or would-be fans who were more predisposed to anxiety. Vasha was perfect, it was known (but in reality, he was their Leader, their Ace, their Center). And Alyosha……well, he was there, too. Intellectual and aloof, only a candidate for Lover Boy status if people not only read the writing credits on their songs but also believed them. Fitting this guy with the emotive Harry Styles cover into the Lover Boy role for kayfabe purposes would’ve been easy. Would’ve helped add balance out their archetypes/public image personae.

As the performance came to its close, Alyosha went to start on the questions—but the auditioner cut him off.

Oh.

Alyosha’s shoulders sagged ever so slightly as the realization set in: no, actually, that wasn’t all bluster and part of the act. This guy genuinely hadn’t intended to stay, much less to win.

Even though he easily could have.

Watching him leave, Alyosha called after him, “……Thank you for sharing with us.”

As they waited for the next boy to come up, Alyosha scribbled something near the bottom corner of his notes, then slid the paper toward Vasha: They had to fill out sign-up forms, right? We might have contact info for that one?

Really, every wild thing Alyosha was thinking would’ve been much easier if they’d gone to the same gym, crossed paths in dance classes, been in the same poetry group, or something that offered the undergirding of a social context. Despite being twenty-five, Alyosha……hadn’t ever really made friends without some shared space and/or activity to facilitate the process. As children, he and Vasha had initially spent time together while their mothers worked. Kendra, Morgan, Bethany, Ryan, and Jeremy had been some of the other music performance students at their high school who hadn’t felt any itch to be in one of the student musicals (aside from Morgan, apprenticing with a composer based in the Upper East Side, all of them had moved out to Los Angeles since their graduation). All of Alyosha’s undergrad friends had overlapped with him in classes or clubs (most of them also lived in LA, now). With Rory, more recently Emil, and their fifth boy, Alyosha had the band as their social infrastructure.

He genuinely had no idea what he was going to do if he did manage to contact the guy who’d just performed—if they even had knowledge he could use to do that—or how to do this “friendship” thing without some externally imposed something making people deal with him. But someone who’d put that much effort into an audition he wasn’t even taking seriously, just to share his love of music? Sounded like someone who Alyosha could make friends with? Maybe?

Vasily Voronin, @ Todd

Vasha liked to think that he'd dressed to impress for the occasion. Hair carefully styled into a long braid tied with a subtly glittery black ribbon at the bottom end, makeup done tastefully understated, outfit carefully curated--a cap-sleeved white button up, a black vest, and some cute black shorts finished with knee socks and black ankle boots decorated with glitter.

A man needed some flair.

Rory and Alyosha drew a smile with their pre-audition banter, but Vasha himself fiddled with his pen, as if he intended to take any notes.

Okay, he totally did intend to take notes--this was important--but all the careful thinking and evaluation in the world wouldn't matter if the vibes weren't right.

And oh, the vibes their first auditioner brought were.

Well.

They were something.

Not much movement. White Guy Acoustic Guitar. An inferior version of what Alyosha had wanted to be, once, though it wasn't really fair for Vasha to rate anyone against Alyosha; they'd always come up lacking.

"Do you have any particular musical influences, besides your Granny's absolutely fantastic taste?" He asked, and his tone was genuinely interested. Honestly, though, he really just wanted to hear more of what this dude had ot say. He was funny.

Vasily Voronin, @ Ilian

Honestly, as soon as the very bold auditioner opened with "I'm not here to win, I'm just here for the challenge," Vasha was sitting up and leaning in. That was a hell of a declaration to start with, and he had to admire the gumption. The confidence it took just to...say that outright. And at least he wasn't wasting anyone's time.

Sure, it could have felt like someone just mocking them, condescending to the silly boy band who dared to hold auditions or whatever. But this was a performance. An inventive reimagining of a pop song into something more ballady, by a competent performer.

Honestly, Vasha thought it was too bad he wasn't interested, but maybe he was more of a solo performer. Certainly he was glad to have gotten to see the performance.

"Great work," he called after the retreating sparkly shirt, and he let out a soft sigh.

One dud, one person showing off (though Vasha had to respect it.)

He glanced over at Alyosha's notes and tugged the paper just a little closer to scribble Should be??? Didn't check them, trusted Mother to handle the details before nudging it back.

He looked to the rest of the band, eyebrows raised.

"Well, that was an interesting first two." In completely opposite ways, too.

Rory Kae

At least, Rory had consoled himself, Vasha had seen the funny side to Todd and his grandmother. They could at least share a laugh together once they got home.

He'd almost started to fidget again when Todd left and a new guy came to the stage. Only this guy was at the complete opposite end of Todd. Sitting up a bit more in his seat, Rory nodded and smiled as Ilian declared he was only here for the challenge. It was an honesty Rory appreciated. Also much appreciated was Ilian's choice of outfit. Dude had style.

And talent. Cover or not, as far as Rory was concerned, the performance was good. Had Ilian not declared his lack of interest in winning, Rory would have voted right then to bring the guy in. He had the right attitude too.

And frankly, Rory had deep respect for someone who admitted they were here for the snacks.

Chuckling, he joined in on the applause and called out impulsively as Ilian headed back, "Love the 'fit! You gotta tell me where you got it!"

Once Ilian was gone, Rory leaned in slightly, a half smile appearing briefly at Vasha's summation.

Maybe third time would be the charm. Surely someone out there was here to actually try out. Sure, he was a clown, but he cared just as much as the others about this little venture.

711 Todd

Still looking very solemn and respectful, as if the spirit of his gran was right there on the stage with him rather than watching Matlock in Richmond, Todd took a deep breath and began, "Well, Tracey Chapman, of course." Of course. "Stevie Wonder, Anette Funicello, Bruce Willis, Bob Hope, and SZA are my main influences." Looking down at his guitar a little forlorn, he explained, "They've brought me a lot of joy on some very dark nights."

Usually in the form of late night public access shows and movies.

Before Ilian could escape too far, Misha grabbed him by the arm just off stage.

“That was so good!” he gushed. “I almost feel bad for what I’m about to subject everyone to.”

He did not sound the least bit guilty. In fact, he seemed as if he took great pleasure in what was about to occur. His smile had a playful edge to it. His eyes twinkled with an almost maniacal gleam. Misha had put a lot of thought into his performance, if “a lot of thought” included such musings as What would most horrify Lev? and What sort of costuming would my followers find most entertaining?

In the end, the choice had been simple.

“My turn!” Misha crowed. He shoved his camera at Ilian on the way by. “Could you make sure I get some good footage? Thanks, you’re the best!”

He then sauntered out on stage like he did this sort of thing all the time. (He didn’t.) After first grabbing the mic, Misha came to a stop in front of the metal folding table behind which the four current band members sat. His make up was perfect. His outfit equally so. He wore a wig of pale blond curls and distinctive bangs, a shimmering halter and matching mini skirt (in lilac, the superior version), and a pair of sparkling boots, each with a heart cut out on the side.

From within one such boot, Misha withdrew a pair of fuzzy pink handcuffs.

“I’m Misha—” he said into the microphone, offering nothing further in regards to his name (he would argue neither the patronymic nor the surname were worth anyone’s notice); he did, however, offer the pink handcuffs to Aleksey, “—and if you couldn’t already tell by the outfit, I’ll be singing Juno by Sabrina Carpenter.”

Handcuffs delivered with a blown kiss and an impish wink, Misha turned and skipped toward center stage. He gave the audience one of his signature bright smiles, accompanying it with a little wave as the music started.

“Don't have to tell your hot a** a thing
Oh yeah, you just get it
Whole package, babe, I like the way you fit
God bless your dad's genetics, mm”

Misha was a better dancer than he was a singer, which wasn’t saying much, seeing as he wasn’t a very accomplished dancer. He did at least follow a routine that may or may not be familiar, depending on one’s concert viewership—evidence, perhaps, that Misha himself had either 1) viewed said concert in person, 2) watched enough grainy livestreams to have working knowledge of it, or 3) spent an inordinate amount of time looking up footage to practice with (or 4, all of the above). Most importantly, he exuded the bubbly humor required by anyone attempting to impersonate Sabrina, which he happened to think should earn him several points in and of itself.

Did he also drop to his knees and simulate an act with the microphone that probably shouldn't be described on Gaia as he gleefully recited, “Have you ever tried this one?”

Yes. Yes, he did.

Misha worked the crowd. He shook his a**. He tossed his head and played with his blond wig. He sang the bridge to the very stern looking blond woman taking notes in the front row and took obvious joy in belting out “I’m so ******** horny.” He bounced through the instrumental break and beckoned the audience to do the same. If he were a better singer one could’ve called the performance sensational. If it earned anything close to that description, it would only be due to his complete lack of embarrassment and his commitment to the bit.

“You make me wanna make you fall in love!”

He struck a pose at the end: hand on his hip, glancing over his shoulder not at the audience, but at the band members behind the table.
