Stretching, Iapetus studied the target that she'd taped onto a tree deep in the park. She would have preferred to tack it to make it more secure, but well. Shoving tacks into a tree probably wasn't the greatest thing to do. Tape was slightly more environmentally friendly.

But she was also the person standing out in the park, after midnight, and throwing punches and kicks at the trunk. Perhaps environmentally friendly had been discarded way back. What she needed was an actual person to work against. For a moment, she considered pulling her phone out and checking to see if there was anything on the database for people looking for fights. But... no. That way felt too much like online dating. Which, gross. No, if she wanted a good take down, she was going to have to go looking for someone feeling the same or hope that she ran into some poor youma.

Such a drag...

Tempesti’s agility training was going well, relatively speaking. She’d fallen significantly less over the past few sessions and her times were improving by the day. Considering the fact that both of her sisters had taken to dropping by at inopportune moments to make sure that she was taking what they deemed an appropriate amount of time to rest, it was a wonder that she was making any progress at all.

Sprinting through the park, veering from her course in sharp turns, sudden leaps, all mimicked by the lavender wisp she’d come to accept as a regular patrol companion. Yes, she was improving. It showed in the definition beginning to shape her limbs, the force with which she was able to unbalance that Tempestine construct. It was never enough though. It wouldn’t be enough when facing something like that Chaotic force she’d seen unleashed against Harold. Even contemplating the pursuit of such power clashed with something fundamental within her, but getting strong enough to withstand it and protect others from that ruthless hubris? That was something worth striving for.

The sensation of another Order-aligned aura slowed the mental barrage, brought her to a halt as she scanned the area in the hopes of spotting the unseen potential ally among the trees. With a bit of luck she spotted another white clad senshi, seemingly engaged in training of her own. “Hello there!” She gave a friendly wave, hoping the stranger wouldn’t mind the company.

Only the fact that the aura approaching felt clean had kept Iapetus from immediately shifting into Destroy mode. She finished out her set of repetitions before turning to the senshi who’d appeared and smiling.

“Hello, yourself! Don’t be afraid, I won’t bite.”

She found herself watching this new girl with interest. The stronger than she was used to aura was especially fascinating. Sure, she’d felt incredibly strong auras everywhere during the Hallow fight, but that had been such a muddied mass of power signatures. She hadn’t been able to take a moment and breathe and appreciate the differences. And now she could and it was one of the coolest things ever.

It was also, she thought, eyes glimmering, very convenient timing given the way she’d just been grousing about a lack of fighting partners.

“So hey, you look like you know how to throw down,” she began eagerly. “Mind humoring me and throwing out a few punches?”

Oh yeah, direct and to the point. That was her.

It seemed as though she wasn’t the only senshi interested in using this park as a training ground and the thought of a possible park ranger coverup once more wandered into the forefront of her mind. She wasn’t much of a conspiracy theorist, but the ubiquity of parks in supernatural encounters certainly lent itself to the idea.

Biting wasn’t among the possibilities Tempesti had been contemplating as she approached, though given the nature of the city it wasn’t exactly an unreasonable announcement. She looked the other senshi over, curiosity piqued by her infectious enthusiasm. With an excitable looking bounce, the wisp placed itself between them before moving to hover by the sidelines.

Punches weren’t quite the senshi’s strongest skill, but it couldn’t hurt to give it a try. It couldn’t hurt to work on different areas. Well, it could and probably would hurt, but building up their more physical abilities had to be at least a decent idea.

“I don’t usually fight physically, but I’d be happy to give it a try.” She rolled her shoulders as she spoke.

Didn’t normally fight physically? Well, where was the fun in that? Still, Iapetus was not about to dismiss this opportunity just because someone didn’t fight much. That being said, she still wanted to keep things as safe as she could. This was just a friendly throw down, after all.

“Aight. You, uh. You do know how to throw a punch, right?” she asked as she approached. “Like properly so you don’t ******** up your own hand?”

It was an honest concern and came from a good place in spite of how condescending it likely sounded. The shoulder roll got a small approving nod out of her. It was never a bad idea to get things loosened up. And she had at least one more trick to keep things fun. Reaching into subspace, she whisked out a roll of boxing tape and snapped her fingers, indicating that she wanted the other senshi to hold out her hands.

“Safety first,” she quipped cheerfully as she began to unwind the tape. So, what’s your handle? I’m Iapetus and I am apparently the senshi of ruthlessness. Which sounds like it should be cool, but really isn’t.”

Tempesti had a general idea of how to throw a punch without injuring herself. At least, she hoped she was remembering correctly. Keep her thumb outside the fist, keep her arm straight but not locked, right? She’d feel it tomorrow if she was misremembering, so that would be another way to know.

“I’ve read about it, and I’ve punched a few youma.” She was usually more of a rock thrower if she wasn’t using magic, but that wasn’t a lie. A small number of youma had been on the receiving end of one of her (likely fairly underwhelming) fists. “But I could definitely use a…tutorial to be sure.”

She watched as the other senshi unwind the tape, realizing that she really had no idea what it was for or how it contributed to safety. “I’m Sailor Tempesti, senshi of harpies. How does ruthlessness work for magic? Does it make you harsher?” This sort of thing always sent her curiosity into overdrive.

”Hands, please,” Iapetus said, holding out one of her own, palm up. “Don’t worry, we’ll have you throwing down like a pro in no time! And Harpies, huh? We’re talkin’ crazy bird ladies, right?”

Eyeing Tempesti carefully, Iapetus decided that she’d start off slow. The way the other girl had talked about using a tutorial spoke volumes as far as she was concerned. She’d gone through a greek myth stage when she was a kid and she had vague memories of the harpies in the stories being fairly formidable. So, if this was a Senshi of Harpies, maybe she didn’t need to throw punches at all. Right.

“Well, lovely to meet you,” she said smoothly, beginning to wrap the tape securely around wrists and hands. “And I wouldn’t say harsher necessarily? It’s more… huh. Trying to explain it feels weird. Basically it’ll let me or someone I direct the magic at fight without feeling any distractions? Like, nothing else matters but the face you’re punching and putting them down as fast and hard as possible. I can use it on you so you can see what I mean, if you like. Outside of an actual fight it should be safe enough.”

And if it wasn’t, well, she’d live. But first, she wanted to get a few (careful) knocks in so she could at least say she’d been training with a buddy. Power demos could come later.

Tempesti held out her hands, laughing softly at the other senshi’s characterization of harpies. It certainly wasn’t inaccurate, though they’d been cooperative since she’d stabilized her magic. “That’s one way of putting it, though I’m used to them now. Lovely to meet you too.”

She listened intently as the young woman explained her own sphere. It sounded like a useful thing for a senshi to have in reserve, especially when used in tandem with their own physical abilities. Certainly less unsettling than something that would bend your moral makeup, even temporarily. Still, she wasn’t entirely certain she’d want to try it. At least not right away. “Let’s just try this first,” she held up her wrapped hands and wrists, “I think it would be good to learn without magical enhancement.”

”Thatta girl,” Iapetus said, approval evident in her voice. Yes, magic was very nice to have, but fists were always more reliable in her opinion. Finishing with Tempesti’s hands, she turned to her own, quickly taping her wrists and thumbs. “It is totally worthwhile to learn as much as you can about fighting without magic. That way, when you have to use the two together, you know exactly what you’re capable of and you have some wriggle room to improvise. Or at least, that’s how I see it.”

Taking a moment to stretch out her arms and crack her neck, Iapetus grinned and assumed a defensive posture.

“Aight. Come at me, chica. Don’t worry about hurting me, I just wanna see what all you can do. And don’t worry about pulling punches either. Let’s just promise to not aim for each other’s faces and we should be good, yeah?”

The last thing she needed was to appear at breakfast with a black eye. That one would be impossible to explain away and she really wasn’t in the mood for a new episode of Dad Fights.

Tempesti nodded as Iapetus spoke, relieved that her attitude met with the girl’s approval. The other senshi was clearly more experienced in matters of physical combat than she was, so following her lead definitely felt like the correct course of action. Looking between her wrapped limbs and the teal-haired girl, she struggled to assess the best place to plant her fist. It was a much more difficult decision than she would have imagined.

When she fought a youma her goal was to dust it, distance it temporarily from the city and its civilians. Even if hurting it wasn’t the point of the battle, it was an unfortunate inevitability. Put bluntly, the face was a convenient and practical target on the rare occasions when she chose to use her fists. Sparring with an ally, however, limited her options and despite her assurances that she need not worry about potential injuries, it was impossible for Tempesti to set aside her concerns.

Taking a few deep, anxious breaths she took a swing at the general area of Iapetus’ ribs.

Wow, Tempesti looked super uncomfortable, Iapetus thought, turning slightly and lowering her arms so that she could take the blow, but also block the worst of it. As things went, it was a decent enough punch, but there was room for improvement.

There was always room for improvement. Even for her.

Before Tempesti could pull back Iapetus took the chance to seize for her wrist and turn, intending to trap the other girl for a moment. She wouldn't try to flip her yet though. She had some manners, after all.

"Not bad," she said. "But you look like your overthinking this. And if you hesitate in the middle of a real fight, things could get bad. So, talk me through this. Gimme the thought processes."

Taking advantage of her grip, spun spun, still gripping Tempesti's wrist and swept out with one leg, aiming to knock the senshi of harpies off her feet.

“Well, I’m really not much of a puncher.” Her expression shifted into sheepishness, “And I was still worried about hurting you. I know you said not to, but it’s not easy.”

A startled noise bearing an unattractive resemblance to a squawk escaped Tempesti as her legs evacuated their preferred location and sent her toward the ground. Fighting the instinctive urge to unleash her magic, she managed to haul herself back to her feet before Iapetus could grapple her again.

With a quick spring Tempesti jumped over the other senshi, landing behind the girl and attempting to pin her arms with a bear hug. As she committed to the motion, she found herself becoming very conscious of the height difference between them.

For reference and/or throwing her purposes, Tempesti is 5'3"

”Fair enough,” Iapetus said agreeably. “Not everyone is inclined to throw hands. And you’re an overall decent person or you wouldn’t be worried about hurting me. And that’s fine, but again, if it makes you pause at an inopportune time, you’ll be in trouble.”

She would have pontificated further, but Tempesti was a springy little thing and recovered from being knocked on her butt much faster than Iapetus would have thought. But she was going to hurt herself from holding in her laughter as Tempesti went for an arm pin.Between the general height diffs between them, Iapetus was also just built a little more solidly. Clamping her jaws tight, she barely managed to avoid letting a laugh burble out. There was no point in hurting the other senshi’s feelings, after all. Still, she couldn’t keep all of the merriment from her voice once she felt capable of coherent speech.

“I give you props for thinking outside the box, but don’t forget that ******** can teleport. So, maybe don’t try this on one of them. Now, let me see…”

Moving quickly, she bent her arms just enough to allow her to seize onto both of Tempesti’s wrists and hold her in place. Then, she crouched quickly, wanting to force the other girl into loosening her arms or risk cracked skulls and ******** up knees. If the senshi of harpies moved how Iapetus suspected she might, fun would be had since Iapetus held onto her wrists with an iron grip. Though she wasn’t at all sure if Tempesti would agree with her assessment.

Oh, this is too good XD

I don’t wanna do too many moves without giving you a chance to react to this one lol

Tempesti would have been lying if she claimed that she didn’t overthink…most everything when it came to combat, especially when she was sparring with an ally. But that’s why she was here. To get better. At punching. She could do that. Or at least get less terrible at it. Iapetus definitely seemed to know what she was doing, so she’d do well to listen.

Right. The teleportation. Tempesti remembered the sight of that pompous officer closing the distance between them with a blink. Even if she hadn’t fought many Negaverse agents, that detail did complicate matters. Not that the other senshi gave her much time to contemplate that factor. Turned out that attempting to grapple someone almost a head taller than her was a less than advisable idea, as the decidedly uncomfortable position she found herself in demonstrated. For several moments she considered attempting to climb onto the girl’s back, though she suspected that digging the heels of her boots into someone’s spine and/or ribs wouldn’t be the best course of action during a friendly sparring match. Keeping that in mind, she went limp and hoped for the off chance that she might be able to wriggle out.

Annnnd there it was! Humming cheerfully, Iapetus shifted her grip on Tempesti’s wrists slightly so that both were held by one hand. Her now free arm took advantage of temporary bonelessness and shot back, looping behind Tempesti’s knees and scooping forward. As Iapetus stood up, she bounced her body the way one would when dealing with a sleepy, clingy child. Turning her head slightly, she grinned back at the other senshi.

“Gotcha! I thought about trying to get your arms over my head so I could pull off a proper princess carry, but I don’t wanna bounce you too much or risk you putting a squeeze on my neck because I startled you. Pretty sure I could throw you, but I wouldn’t be able to help control how you fell. So, I think we’re at an impasse here.”

For her part, she was feeling more than a little smug that her harebrained idea had mostly worked. But there wasn’t much either of them could do in this position. Bending and twisting, she got Tempesti’s feet back on the ground and slid herself out of the armlock, though she didn’t let go of the other girl’s wrists just yet.

“Pop quiz! Walk me through what you could do to free yourself if I was a bad guy. Let’s talk through some ideas here. You think of something good, I’ll buy you a coffee. But if I can counter and squash your idea, you owe me a coffee.”

Iapetus grinned again, looking entirely too cheerful.

“Whatcha say. Deal?”
