Poultrygeist (15) : As Destiny City is a bustling metropolis, it’s not unexpected that there should be some strange animals running the streets. Sometimes it’s a tiger, sometimes a monkey, sometimes a chicken. Sometimes it’s something worse. Strange egg clusters have appeared in Destiny City’s parks and officials aren’t really sure what they are; these eggs have nothing inside of them. Though it’s an anomaly, they are chalking it up to teenaged pranks. However, they have advised to just leave the eggs as they are. Nobody wants to say why, but if you’re out late at night, you’ll find out. In the darkness, whispered between the sounds of the city: a guttural, rasping cluck. The creature stands on stilt-like legs, rooted to the ground with razor-sharp talons. It wears a cloak of long, oily feathers that drag on the ground with a sinister scraping. If you stare into the darkness, piercing red eyes stare back at you. That’s all it takes for a confrontation: a mangled bird, maybe a chicken in another life, comes barreling out at you. It stands easily as tall as a person, but the proportions are all wrong. The smell of sulfur follows it as it lunges, pecking and screaming and scratching as it attempts to chase you away. Maybe, from the nests full of empty eggs. The battles are fierce, but fleeting; it will viciously try to chase you away but the effects are always the same: at some point, the eggs are crushed. As always, there’s nothing inside of them, but with one final wail, the bird will vanish into a plume of foul smoke.

Too stunned to scream, Hekate remained rooted in place. Pupils blown out into wide discs as she stared down an alleyway that was dimly lit by yellow light from a lamp overhead.

She’d just finished gathering energy with her wraith and been on her way towards the closest mirror she knew of that wasn’t in a store. It had been beside her, floating lazily in its corporal form, its expression looking unimpressed with the world and overall bored with the evening.

And then…

Then…

What… The ********… Just happened…?

Her heart hammered against her chest as the smell of sulfur assaulted her senses. It made her stomach twist and churn, but her adrenaline was so high that the nausea barely registered. Every nerve in her body felt taut and ready to snap, hands trembling as she took a cautious step back from the shadows.

Hekate had no idea what it was she was looking at.

It was like a horror film where dinner last night was making a comeback, but not in the form of food poisoning. No… that would have been much kinder.

Cluck Hekate visibly flinched, from the sound of long talons dragging along concrete cut through the silence, giving the distinct impression that it was sharpening them in preparation for its next attack. Cluck At this point, she dared not even breathe while this monstrosity stalked towards her, stepping into the halo of light, looking like a disheveled mother hen who had nothing left to lose and no more ******** to give. Cluck Oily feathers swept over the dumpster runoff that dripped into the drain that had been between them, and then it lowered its head to eye level…

In the second most fight or flight moment of her life, it seemed her voice had run off without her. But upon a whisper, she managed a single word, “Jinx”.

A trail of purple smoke, barely visible in the evening light, fell from her shaky fingertips and snaked its way towards the creature, wrapping around its bony legs and up its body like a snake. It pulled its head back when her magic reached its face, and though it tried to retreat a few steps away, the smoke did not dissipate and was absorbed into its eyes, its nose, and its mouth when it opened its beak to let out an ear-piercing screech.

That sound was all it took to snap Hekate from her trance and set her into motion. Fear gripped her, causing her to stumble multiple times but somehow she managed to keep running despite her legs feeling weak but at least the beast that was running after her wasn’t having much luck staying upright either, as it pursued her in a drunken-like state. Its body knocking over trash bins and falling into storefront windows.

Help.. She tried to call out, but her voice was silenced in her panicked state, while her mind struggled to remember where the nearest mirror was so she could actually escape.

The park wasn’t the smartest place to try to gather energy but Arnica had reasoned that–it was summer. It was hot. Maybe there were people out on dates, so that was kind of two for one, but was it really fair to kill a romantic mood by draining them?

No, but if it was 'one bad date night or the end of the world,' it was the easy choice. Besides, if he'd popped out of the bushes to ask 'Hey, can I borrow some energy in case a the giant snake monster in the sky manages to break free and target us we have a chance to fight back', well, certainly they'd say yes, right?

But, perhaps it would have just done more harm to jump out and ask.

This was quiet. Easy.

If he played his card right, they didn't even know that he'd siphoned energy from them.

He'd been out for nearly two hours tonight and was about to turn in when he decided he'd check one last mirror. It was hidden deep in the park, tucked away in dense shrubbery that made it impossible to find if you weren't looking for it.

But it also made it almost impossible to escape the mirror.

Though Arnica had been able to imagine the scene effectively enough to walk with ease, the spring showers had encouraged furious growth, and Arnica found himself one step out of the mirror and snagging on bushes that had grown with such reckless abandon that he almost thought about just tumbling backwards into the mirror and going home.

But then, he heard the ear-piercing screech.

Loud.

Close.

Coming from the same direction as the energy signature of another Dark Mirror Senshi.

All thoughts of a peaceful evening evaporated from Arnica's mind, and he pushed through the branches and leaves with enough force that his uniform tore in a few places. He was vaguely aware of the painful scratches across his skin but the sudden burst of adrenaline made it easy to ignore.

It took only seconds to locate the Dark Mirror Senshi he was looking for, and there was a split second where he was glad that the could say he recognized Hekate.

...But she just so happened to be running full speed at him, and he could see the terror in her eyes.

"Hey!" he blurted, and before she could rush past him, he reached out to wrap an arm around her waist, to spin her into him. "What the hell was that, are you okay?" he asked, but by then he'd already taken her wrist to pull her towards the mirror he'd just come from. From there, he'd wrapped his arm around her back in some small measure of comfort, but when he glanced over his shoulder he didn't see anything but shadows.

He didn't know what she was running from, only that she looked terrified. There were no other energy signatures in the air but that didn't mean there weren't any threats.

Hekate felt the aura of an Eternal Dark Mirro Senshi nearby and immediately ran towards them; her body moving before her mind could process the decision. She should be leading it away, but since it had no signature, if it changed its mind and pursued them instead, her comrade would be walking into a trap.

No- she had to let them know. Not so that they would help fight it, because she knew there was nothing she could do to help. Hekate couldn’t even lift her arms in defence, let alone throw a punch with her limbs burning and heart feeling like it was ready to give out. But she hoped there would be safety in numbers. That the angry mother of a McGriddle would be deterred by their aura, assuming it could sense such things.

She’d intended to grab his arm and tell him to run. But Arnica’s reflexes were faster than hers.

His arm locked around her waist, slowing her momentum significantly even as her own weight pulled her sideways, legs turning to liquid, ankles threatening to betray her with every step. The world tilted… everything was spinning, and Hekate knew that she would have hit the ground if Arnica hadn’t been there holding her against him, keeping her upright.

He said something, a question maybe, she felt his voice rumble against her but couldn’t hear what he’d asked. Not when the only thing she could hear was her own pounding heartbeat and the sound of each desperate breath as she struggled to breathe.

A moment passed, and he led her towards a mirror; one she would have never found on her own. Every few steps, she glanced back over her shoulder, expecting to see the feathery shadow with red eyes, or to feel claws and feet against her back the moment she looked away. But all she saw was shadows dappled by moonlight.

When they finally stopped… when she felt his arm wrap around her back and hand against her back… something in her snapped. The rush of adrenaline, the panic, the helplessness she felt… it all crashed down on her all at once. Her knees almost buckled from the weight of it, and she clung to Arnica without thinking. Burying her face against his chest, she held onto fistfuls of his transparent overlay so tightly her knuckles were white, knowing that if she let go she’d collapse beside him, just like she had during the fight against the Calamitous Hollow.

She trembled against him “I-I’m sorry,” her voice shook as she whispered. In her head she’d already explained it all; why she was afraid, what had happened to her wraith, why she ran to him instead of away… But the words remained stuck in her throat.

All she could manage was another apology…

…And another…

And another…
