With a slightly cooler evening, Sailor Tempesti had made a decision to take a patrol through one of the parks that had a few ponds in the hopes that the mosquitos would be less active than they had been in previous weeks. She always enjoyed admiring the aquatic flora that lined the water, and the ducks who made their home in the area were far more charming than the wrathful chicken she’d encountered more times than she’d care to remember. So maybe she’d chosen this area in the hopes that it would be a quiet patrol spent listening to crickets and watching waterfowl, people were always telling her to take some time for herself and this was a way of killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.
During this session of attempting to quell the conflict between her desire to work and wanting to appease her worried loved ones , a whiff of something fowl rose with an uncomfortable warmth from some unseen place. At first she tried to attribute the stench to a hypothetical pool of standing water, but even with this attempt at denial she couldn’t pretend that it was anything but the monster(s?) that seemed to have declared her an archnemesis.

Cardinal had spent some time touring the national parks and taking some ranger seminars to improve her skills for being a park ranger at Destiny - granted all the preparing she could do would never compare to the insanity that lived here. No one else had youma just randomly appear or actual magical cryptids. There were places that just had sightings and while it was fun to listen to the stories and hear about what the mythos was - it didn't compare.
So now back home she took in a deep breath and sighed. She'd come to one of the smaller parks in order to just see what was going on tonight, she'd heard there was a new cryptid in the city and she wanted to check it out.
There was a frown when she smelled it before she saw it. Not to mention she felt another energy signature near by. As the senshi wondered she found a nest of eggs and she stopped to investigate them - she wanted to find the owner of the energy signature but first, these were new and she hadn't seen them before. She picked up one of them and looked curiously at it. It felt heavy but also hallow at the same time???
An allied energy signature caught Tempesti’s attention, momentarily distracting her from thoughts of the greasy chicken monster she knew was nearby. Though if her earlier experiences were any indication, the two paths would most likely converge in the near future. The senshi’s pace quickened, following the odor and wondering if there would ever again be a time when she couldn’t smell these things.
Passing through a stand of overgrowth, she spotted the source of the energy she’d felt. Another senshi. Another senshi holding one of the offending eggs. Tempesti knew that she had no room to judge, given that her first instinct upon encountering her first clutch of monster eggs was to poke one with a stick. Still, it seemed better to advise her of the risk. With a wave, she raised her voice, hopefully enough that the other woman could hear her. “You should really put that egg down, the thing that laid it is…not very nice and if those eggs are here it won’t be too far.”
As though summoned by the mere mention of its existence, an unholy screech echoed from the shadows, the sound underscored by an oddly ominous scraping. She hoped that her warning had given the stranger the seconds she needed to prepare.

Cardinal paused when she heard a voice and looked up towards the energy signature, "Oh sorry!!"
She looked sheepish though it only lasted a moment before she heard the unholy screech that came from the shadows. The senshi paused looking towards where the noise had come from. "Ummm.. what was that!?"
She stood up looking concerned. She caught a whiff of something that was not pleasant at all. Causing the senshi to wrinkle her noise.
Tempesti turned toward the sound, only sighting the glowing red pinpricks as they launched toward her and the other senshi.
Propelling itself from the darkness, the poultry beast glided into the clearing, its galline grace echoing the Hindenburg, head swiveling between the two women before its gaze locked on the brown-clad senshi and the eggs at her feet. Talons dug into the ground with a scraping metallic shriek as it prepared to charge, giving only seconds before it was hurtling toward Sailor Cardinal in a maelstrom of feathery rage.

Cardinal backed up as the chicken charged and she was looking around quickly for an exit. This would be easier if it was a bear or something more -- normal.
She had a sudden idea and called her attack "Uktena's Shine!" The illusion of a feathered snake showed up and her gem on her tiara let a bright flash of light causing the raging feathery demon chicken to falter and Cardinal made a quick exit from the path that was the chicken.
"How do we subdue the monstrous chicken?" She asked looking at Tempesti who clearly had already dealt with the thing before.
Sailor Scout Attack: Uktena's Shine
When Cardinal calls this attack an illusion of the Uktena appears behind where Cardinal is standing. The gem on her tiara then gives off a dazzling light that temporarily leaves her opponents seeing spots if they look directly at her.
This attack lasts for 30 seconds and can be used 3 times. This attack effects those opponents that are 10 foot (cone radius) in front of Cardinal. Usually, the spots seen from the light after the attacks ends are also gone, but could last longer and be distracting if a player so wishes.
The feathery monster screeched to a halt at the sight of the horned serpent, overcome by the display of lights emanating from the tiara. Its head whipped around frantically, seeking its target.
“It’s the eggs!”
She shouted in the direction the other senshi had run, hoping she could hear her over the irate squawking.
“Once you break the eggs it will leave! They’re empty, don’t worry about hurting them!” She really hoped that this wouldn’t be the one time they weren’t empty, or the one time it would decide to stick around after the eggs got destroyed.

Cardinal looked and nodded when Tempesti said the eggs. Cardinal bounded over towards the nest and tried to think of the quickest way to destroy the eggs.
She debated for a moment to throw the eggs but decided a couple of good stomps would help. She really hoped that the other was correct and they were indeed empty. She did not want to get whatever could come out of them on her shoes.
She looked over towards the chicken once she managed to stomp the eggs. Which the chicken let out another clucking howl -- it was hard to explain in terms of birds that she knew. But the bird poofed in a very foul smelling smoke poof.
The senshi tried to keep her breathing steady to keep from retching at the smell that came form the foul feathered fowl. It was worse than coming up on something dead in the forest.
When the air cleared enough she sighed, "Thanks for the help!"
There was a pause as she seemed to think, "OH! I'm Sailor Cardinal. Sorry didn't really get to introduce myself before uh... That happened."
Tempesti watched as the other senshi dispatched the eggs with an impressive efficiency and sent the not quite chicken screeching on its way back to wherever it spent its time when it wasn’t guarding those nests.
She looked the woman over, relieved that she had no injuries, no that she could see anyway. “Of course, didn’t seem like it gave you too much trouble though. I’m Sailor Tempesti, are you alright?”
Whatever Cardinal called into combat against that thing had definitely piqued Tempesti’s curiosity. She was certain that she’d seen similar creatures in a book? A piece of art? Something. “What was that you summoned?”

Cardinal chuckled a bit and scratched the back of her head a bit when Tempesti said it seemed like it didn't give her much trouble, "To be fair, I kind of work as a park ranger when I'm not dressed as a magical girl. Maybe that helped me keep it from being too troublesome?"
There was a nod though when the other asked if she was alright, "Yeah I think I'm fine a bit startled that it was some crazy chicken ghost thing. It smelled pretty bad too."
The other made a face, "It was probably worse than some things I've run into that died or the occasional scared skunk. I think I prefer skunk stank to the chicken." Which was weird to say because skunks could be pretty stinky.
"I'm Sailor Cardinal!" The other added as an introduction, "Oh that? It was a uktena, which is what I'm the senshi of." She paused, "I've seen art and mention of them in Native American mythology which is fascinating."
She seemed to think, "What's your sphere?" She asked curiously.
Tempesti listened attentively as the other senshi spoke, it made sense that members of their ranks would work in the parks service. Maybe someone could even do a study of why so many battles and episodes of general magical strangeness took place on their properties. “That would make sense, I imagine you have to deal with a lot with a job like that. Though I am glad to hear that these monsters haven’t been a factor in your life before this.” She decided to omit how frequently they’d been a factor in her own as of late.
“I don’t blame you, these chicken monsters are foul.”
The word “uktena” was vaguely familiar, maybe something she’d come across in a book or a museum and forgotten. Wherever she’d first encountered it the real thing, or something close to it, was impressive. “They’re amazing. I’m Sailor Tempesti, senshi of harpies. Nice to meet you.”

Cardinal chuckled and nodded, "It certainly keeps things interesting. It doesn't help that youma sometimes crop up and I have to decide if I'm handling it as a park ranger or a senshi. It's really annoying when they're after a whole family and you gotta act."
There was nod, "They really are, it's weird they smell like sulfur or rotten eggs. When the eggs literally have nothing in them?" She seemed thoughtful, "I wonder if the chicken's actually sort of a ghost of something that was never born which is the reason it smells so rotten?" That was crazy though wasn't it - you never hear of a ghost existing when something wasn't born.
There was a grin when the other said they were the senshi of harpies. "Oh goodness! Harpies have such cool legends as well!"
Cardinal seemed super excited by the idea "It's nice to meet you too~! Maybe we should train together or something some time when there's not a crazy chicken?"
Cardinal really didn't hadn't had time to hang out with a ton of senshi or order in general because she'd been busy with ranger classes and things.
“I know what you mean, they don’t exactly have great timing.”
As the other senshi returned to the subject of these chicken beasts, Tempesti shrugged. As often as she’s speculated on the nature of these creatures, the idea of being the ghost of something unborn never occurred to her. They certainly felt solid, but the past year had taught her that the laws of physics were nowhere near as stable as she had once believed. “I have no idea what they, they have at least some physicality but they always just come out of nowhere and then disappear into thin air when they’re done.”
Of course, a lot of the scary stories Laurel used to terrorize her as a child involved ghosts causing physical harm to humans so if those had even a kernel of truth that was a possibility. Other monsters were real, so it stood to reason that ghosts were within the realm of possibility. Even bizarre, smelly bird ghosts.
She smiled shyly at Cardinal’s reaction to her sphere. Despite the myths associated with harpies, she had grown rather fond of them. “Thank you, I’d be happy to train with you sometime! I’m always happy to work with new people, especially when they understand our rather unique circumstances.”

There was a chuckle "They really don't have great timing."
She nodded and seemed thoughtful, "Yeah it did seem pretty solid but I don't know the appearing from nowhere and disappearing into thin air kind of makes me think ghost, or magician?"
The other was beaming, "You're welcome and awesome!! I'll look forward to being able to train with you!"
Cardinal stiffled a yawn and looked around, "I suppose -- I should probably get ready to head home, I've got an early shift tomorrow and haha I just thought about it."
Though she was fairly certain that the other senshi intended to describe the creature as the product of a magic trick, as Sailor Cardinal spoke, an entirely different mental image rose unbidden in Tempesti’s mind. Her imagination conjured the unfortunate picture of an unearthly birds dressed to the nines in a glittery performer’s outfit and accompanied by an equally glamourous assistant. Deciding that she would prefer not to imagine the illusionary feats such a duo would attempt, she returned her full attention to her companion.
“I’m looking forward to it too, but we can save the planning for another time. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you need to and take care!” She had no desire to keep her up later than necessary if she had a job to do the following morning and cheerfully bid her goodnight.
