2025 Star Festival Prompt
The Caves (5) : To any explorers visiting the new Reservoir, they may find that just a bit away from the sandy water are a set of caves. Some of these connect back to the lake, but others rapidly plunge into darkness. It wouldn't be hard to get lost in here, but thankfully there are some very odd lights to help guide you out. If you turn off your light down some of these dark paths, you may find yourself surrounded by glowing pastel lights. A closer inspection reveals that you seem to be looking at some sort of glowing caterpillars. An internet search will reveal that Destiny City scientists have been researching the strange, unnamed creatures, but the articles are very limited. If you take them out of the cave they seem to shrivel up almost immediately. They're neat, but clearly meant to be stay in their natural habitat.
Jackson had spent the majority of the morning at the reservoir, playing his guitar and enjoying a day where he didn't have any obligations. As he looked out over the water and idly watched the other people there playing in the water, sunbathing, talking and laughing to each other, and generally enjoying the nice day like he was, his mind wandered to the events last night.
He had had a very good time exploring the fair, posting his wish, and setting off lanterns with Roka Toshrio. He had known that they probably had a lot in common but he hadn't realized just how much. Aside from that, Jackson found that he just enjoyed Roka, which was rather odd for him as he didn't enjoy a lot of people. There was something about the other man that had always drawn Jackson's attention to where ever he was sitting in class and whenever he appeared on campus like a figment of his imagination. Hopefully, now that they had actually started talking, Jackson could figure out what that thing might be.
As his mind wandered to Roka, it also wandered to the lanterns they had released the night before and the glowing worms that had made the lanterns possible. Jackson had heard about the glowing worms growing in a cave nearby long before the festival but hadn't really paid the information much thought. It was science that didn't really have a lot to do with music so the music and art students had stored away the information somewhere in the back of his mind. There were glowing worms found in a cave that scientists were studying and that was about all he knew about the subject.
Jackson wasn't exactly disinterested in science, but he was more interested in other things, namely art and music, and while the info he knew about the worms was kept in his back pocket in case it became relevant, it wasn't like he had really put much thought into it other than it being a nifty discovery.
Now that he had seen what the scientists had done with them to make the lanterns work Jackson was legitimately curious to see them for himself and maybe actually look into the research and development of them and now seemed as good a time as any to go and check that out.
The musician popped the last bit of his sandwich in his mouth, gathered any trash he had made from eating his lunch and a violet star charm he'd found under a rock and got up from where he had been sitting near the water. As he stood up, he slung his guitar over his shoulders and made sure that the well used instrument was secure on his back before he made his way over to towards where the cave was supposed to be. The guitar was one of his most prized possessions and he would loathe to have it broken in his venture to look into the worms.
Jackson would have thought that, especially after seeing what they could do with the lanterns, more people would be interested in seeing the worms for themselves, but as he approached the caves and made his way inside, the cave was almost entirely empty. Maybe it was just too nice of a day to go cave exploring. The musician wandered a little further in, particularly enjoying the coolness of the cave compared to the heat outside, and started to look around for the worms and anything else that might be interesting.
