Poultrygeist (15) : As Destiny City is a bustling metropolis, it’s not unexpected that there should be some strange animals running the streets. Sometimes it’s a tiger, sometimes a monkey, sometimes a chicken. Sometimes it’s something worse. Strange egg clusters have appeared in Destiny City’s parks and officials aren’t really sure what they are; these eggs have nothing inside of them. Though it’s an anomaly, they are chalking it up to teenaged pranks. However, they have advised to just leave the eggs as they are. Nobody wants to say why, but if you’re out late at night, you’ll find out. In the darkness, whispered between the sounds of the city: a guttural, rasping cluck. The creature stands on stilt-like legs, rooted to the ground with razor-sharp talons. It wears a cloak of long, oily feathers that drag on the ground with a sinister scraping. If you stare into the darkness, piercing red eyes stare back at you. That’s all it takes for a confrontation: a mangled bird, maybe a chicken in another life, comes barreling out at you. It stands easily as tall as a person, but the proportions are all wrong. The smell of sulfur follows it as it lunges, pecking and screaming and scratching as it attempts to chase you away. Maybe, from the nests full of empty eggs. The battles are fierce, but fleeting; it will viciously try to chase you away but the effects are always the same: at some point, the eggs are crushed. As always, there’s nothing inside of them, but with one final wail, the bird will vanish into a plume of foul smoke.

Note: If you choose to encounter one of these bird-like creatures, your character will recognize they are not youma. It is impossible to tell if it is a single entity or if there are many. The bird does not seem to understand or care to listen to human words. It will always disappear in a malodorous plume of smoke and leave nothing but a foul odor and a clutch of empty, broken eggs behind. This RP can be used as a battle requirement as long as there are two powered characters involved; you must be interacting with another player’s powered character. This does not count as the one youma battle per stage for growth so characters can still use an NPC youma battle as well as this one for growth purposes. This can only be used as a battle requirement once per character, but there is no limitation for how many times a player can use this prompt.

The reports of strange eggs popping up around parks had first made Kyrie question her concept of time and memory of popular American holidays, at least insofar as she'd seen herself in her time on Earth. But, no, a check of the calendar app and a quick internet search confirmed, this was not the time of year for people to hide eggs for others to seek out in specific scavenger hunts. That was Easter, and that'd passed earlier in the year, which made sense for all the egg, chick, and bunny motifs she'd seen around the city and shops to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Or whatever people celebrated it for. There were some religious connections she didn't really read up on, except seeing some jokes on social media about a zombie rising from the grave. Moment she was informed the jokes had said religious connection, and Lilith had tried to explain the holiday to her…. Kyrie had mentally checked out or at least refused to retain the information. Her own personal gripe with faiths made her especially prickly with all that.

But! These strange eggs, she could at least be sure, were not strewn around in connection to a cute holiday game. And that had really been all she'd needed to push herself out as Solaris to look into the, seemingly endless, oddity of Destiny City. There were plenty of parks in her usual roaming grounds, so if all parks were getting hit with these weird eggs…

The Eternal senshi moved with ease and a grin, enjoying the magical boost to her speed returning to what it'd once been. It'd be a long time yet before the thrill eased up, she felt pretty confident in that. Moving over rooftops and leaping cross alleys till she came back down to the ground when she reached one of the parks--a decently sized one, with large hedges forming some geometric pattern that lead to a central area highlighted by a large fountain and various benches around it. Lights from within the fountain itself made the waters sparkle, adding to the reflections cast by the electric lamps that helped to illuminate the various paths. Swaths of flowers and other low plants lined the walkways, adding to the muffling effect of the city's buzz beyond the hedges.

Solaris tread the paths slowly, not sensing any Chaos at least in the area--but she did sense another Order signature, and perked up a bit on that. Her attention was diverted, however, as she stood in the brightly lit central zone once she reached the fountain.

Something… clicked down one of the paths. Or… grated? Groaned? She frowned, staring out towards the hedges--the lamps down along that path were all out, she realized, leaving the place smothered in shadows once the hedges blocked off the lights from the central zone and other paths. The sound repeated, but it was no more clearer than the first time, and squinted towards the darkened path…

Jihlava had found the fountain a night or so ago and had decided that it was the perfect place to come for a quick face wash. She’d made her way from her current hiding place to the fountain, pausing only when the clutches of odd eggs popped up along her path. Surely that couldn’t be normal? Granted, she hadn’t been on Earth for very long, but large eggs out in the open did not seem to match up with what she’d observed so far.

Well, they weren’t hurting anything and they didn’t reek of chaos. Maybe it was simply egg season for a bird she hadn’t seen yet. Shrugging her unease away, the tall senshi continued towards the fountain. When she paused again, it was because she could feel… something. It didn’t feel like the chaos that had trapped her world. It was bright and clean and very strong. Now what in the world could it…?

Realization that she was feeling the aura of another senshi brought a sudden stabbing tear to her eye and she rushed in the direction it came from. Which seemed to be her fountain, so she wouldn’t have to veer too far out of her way. The puzzle of the eggs was forgotten for a moment in her eagerness to reach the other senshi and hopefully trade news.

Quote:
A few of the eggs were huddled against and somewhat beneath some of the hedges, she realized, little clusters here and there. Okay, so all of those reports were true. Huh. But she kept her eye down the darkened path of hedges, another grating sound drifting from amongst the dense leaves.

The Order signature was getting closer, and quickly, pulling Solaris' attention from whatever lay in the shadows to-- oh! Not a familiar face, but she grinned brightly nonetheless. It was… pretty clear the other senshi wasn't a native to Earth, and her wings flexed and stretched wide as they could briefly in a silent show of not from here, either before they folded against her back once more. Did she have a bias towards other non-human senshi? Slightly, yes. Maybe a little more than slightly. It was… there were things she found many like her understood, things she only hoped the Earthlings would never comprehend.

"Hey, don't think we've met yet. I'm Solaris. Are you--"

Her light words were cut off by another long, drawn out croaking sound from down the dark path, and she frowned as she glanced towards it once more. "....don't sense any youma at least, but that doesn't really narrow down the list of possibilities…"

Quote:
Pausing a few feet from the winged senshi, Jihlava suddenly felt shy. Well, no. Not shy, exactly. But definitely nervous. Would she be judged for leaving her world to come here? But this other senshi who smiled and greeted her wasn’t from Earth either. In fact, Jihlava could think of at least ten races that the girl could be (even if she only knew most of them from illustrations in her father’s books).

Then, she remembered that most senshi wouldn’t simply give out their private names. So, Solaris. Nodding to herself, she thought that Solaris seemed to have most of the features noted in books for the people of that world. Very well. She felt a little steadier now mentally.

“No,” she agreed softly, “No, I don’t think we have. I’d have certainly remembered you if you’d visited in the past. I’m Jihlava. But what are youma? I don’t recognize the word.”

Really, it irked her to admit that there was a word she didn’t know. And to have someone else just toss it out so casually while she remained in the dark… Oh, it stung! Though her sense of injured pride didn’t last long as she heard the odd croaking and froze. She wasn’t sure what she was hearing, but it didn’t sound good at all. In her own experience, strange noises coming from the shadows rarely boded well for anyone.

Carefully setting her sack down where it would be safe, the tall senshi shook out her arms and sighed. If there was a fight coming, she wanted to be prepared. Even if the thought made her feel a bit ill.

Quote:
What are youma?

The question made her pause, brows lifting briefly, before her smile softened. How long had she been on Earth? "I can answer that question, and try to answer any others you have, Jihlava… after we deal with this," she finished, voice hardening as she looked back to…

Ah.

Red eyes peered out of the shadows, a guttural sound rattling around what she could only assume was the creature's throat. Something scraped against the paving stones of the winding maze, a harsher sound than the rustling of leaves as whatever it was moved against the hedges.

A shriek from the creature came right before it bolted from the darkness, slick feathers dragging along the ground with that damn scraping sound. Solaris scowled, jumping up onto the fountain's ledge and backing up till there was more space between it and her. It's dagger-like talons dug into the stone of the bason's walls, wings flailing and thrashing as it tried to step up on the slender surface.

"What does your magic do? Ranged or close-up?"

Questions she didn't exactly have time to ask before, but could have kicked herself for asking now, as that seemed to be enough to divert the giant chicken's attention to the other senshi. It gave a garbled, croaking series of clucks before it abandoned trying to get up on the fountain for barreling towards Jihlava.

“Well, I’m glad someone is willing to,” she answered a little helplessly. “Nothing like this place is in any of my books and,” Jihlava paused quickly as she followed where Solaris was looking and saw the eyes. If strange sounds from the shadows were bad, then surely strange sounds plus glowing red eyes were worse! It reminded her in some ways of how the children on her world had begun to show signs of chaos. Was that happening here?

The shriek followed by scraping set her teeth on edge. But the bird that ran out was the real surprise. She watched as Solaris jumped onto the fountain and stared, slack jawed for a moment before being snapped out of it by the rapid fire questions. Her magic? Would her magic even work on an overlarge fowl?

“I. It. Well, y’see,” Jihlava stumbled over her words, trying to figure out how to explain what exactly her magic did. “I don’t think spooky whispers are really going to bother a bird.”

Of course, her strongest magic called forth a pack of spirit beasts and that might work, but when she tried to remember the words, something blocked the way. She knew what she had to say but it felt like there was a locked door on that part of her soul. Feeling even more flustered, especially now that the bird had turned its sights upon her, Jihlava darted for the bag she’d dropped and taking it up, swung with all her might at the bird’s face. She could hear and feel the connection and couldn’t help the pleased little howl that escaped her throat. Doubtless some of her things inside the bag would be broken, but better trinkets and coin than her body!

Quote:
Spooky whispers? Color her intrigued. "Hey never know, weirder things can happen around here," she quipped, moving quickly across the wide rim of the fountain towards the other feathered senshi and the crazed chicken. Part of her wanted to unleash the extent of her magic, that piece she finally had back, but the close proximity of Jihlava to the thing made her reconsider.

Still gave a whoop of joy when Jihlava smacked the thing upside the head. The chicken in question bawked and squawked, stumbling backwards from her as its balance was thrown for a loop. It's talons dug into the paving stones, gouging long, deep gashes that fractured the stones apart.

Solaris easily jumped from the rim of the fountain towards the two. Running past the boggled chicken, she paused long enough to swing her foot out at it in a high kick, catching the bird in the beak with its head lowered as it was and causing it to gargle out a cry and stumble back all the more from Jihlava's location. Didn't take her long to close the remaining distance till she stood alongside the other senshi.

"My magic's pretty explosive, so I just need us both a good distance from the thing before I use it. So if you wanna take a crack, go for it!" Her tone was light, not to the level of flippant, but she was… certainly far from tense over the fight. It was hard to feel stressed though, after seeing the fight against the Calamitous Hollow.

Though they certainly had a lot less people in this fight against the angry chicken.

Quote:
Weirder things could happen? Oh, she did not like the sound of that. But even if it made her shrivel up a little inside, it was still highly valuable information. It implied that giant murderous chickens were not something that the people of Earth dealt with on a daily basis. Still, she could try. The utter failure to bring her most powerful magic to bear meant… well. She didn’t know what it meant, but she could try the least of her magics. Setting her sack down at her feet, she closed her eyes and brought her hands up, whispering, “Goetia Evoke.”

The good news was that she wasn’t entirely bereft of magic. An ethereal grimoire flickered into being before her and its pages even tried to turn. The bad news was that that was about as far as the magic got before flickering in and out for half a breath and then fading completely. Wailing, Jihlava stared at the empty space where the ‘grimoire’ had floated. Why hadn’t it worked?!?

Turning a panicked gaze to Solaris, she tried to apologize for her failure, only for little stuttery sounds of distress to emerge instead of her big girl words. She instinctively took up her sack again and swung it for the now very confused bird. For whatever reason, her magic wasn’t working. Fine. Great.. She was still a senshi. She’d just have to fight using other means.

“What,” Jihlava finally managed to make her tight throat work and permit words to escape, “precisely do you mean by ‘pretty explosive’?”

Quote:
Her eyes flickered constantly between Jihlava and the chicken, excited to see whatever this magic was--the spectral book was cool, but… ah. She gave a sympathetic wince when the magic failed--or so she summarized, given the other senshi's garbled panic sounds.

"It's okay, it'll be okay," she said gently, after Jihlava struck the chicken again. There had been… a lot of similar confusions for her over the years, it was a conversation she was more than willing to have with her. But first.

"Literal explosions," was her delayed response, figuring enough was getting to be enough with this strange bird. The priority was swiftly turning towards talks in her mind, but she knew at least this had to be handled first.

Taking a breath, she lunged forward towards the chicken, slamming into it with her elbow and shoulder. The creature gave a choked, winded sound as it was forced backwards, talons slicing the stone as it was toppled. Managed to also slice her leg and thigh in the process, but it was both outer and nothing overly concerning. The white and blue bodysuit leeching red was a disturbing sight to her, though.

Solaris quickly returned to where she'd stood next to Jihlava, now that the scrambling, flailing chicken was shoved further away. Lifting a hand, she snapped her fingers and pointed them like a 'gun' towards her target. "Catalytic Combustion!" The spark ignited into a small, condensed orb of golden energy before it shot off towards the chicken. Or rather, the ground just to the side and behind it, to reduce the chance of them getting hit by the blast.

Moment it impacted, the orb erupted, sending a rush of heated gases that blasted the chicken and some of the strange eggs by the fountain, the heat singing some of its feathers.

Quote:
Eyes widening, Jihlava tried to parse what, exactly, Solaris was capable of. Literal explosions could mean many things from the silly little firecrackers children threw around during celebrations to world cracking events that had been outlined in great and disturbing detail in her books.

Frankly, she was hoping for something closer to the former.

Crying out as Solaris surged forward into the bird, Jihlava couldn’t help but wince as the pristine bodysuit began to show thin lines of red. But, before she could react and try to move to help, Solaris was back beside her and summoning her own magic. Neck feathers puffed up and then slicked down in alarm, as she learned, exactly, what her new companion meant by ‘literal explosion’. She watched as the scores of strange eggs turned to dust within mere moments and was surprised that more of the park and fountain didn’t do the same. That the bird had survived was also a surprise.

Apparently, it felt the same because it turned to give them a very dazed look before turning to find its eggs and letting out a wail of its own as it realized that the eggs were nothing but dust now. Most surprising though was that the bird vanished in its own puff of dark, gaggingly noxious smoke. Coughing, she turned to stare at Solaris, wondering if that was also part of what her magic could do. If so, she would have to remember to never get on this woman’s bad side.

“What,” she finally said as the smoke cleared, “the hell?”

Quote:
Oh. Huh. She hadn't expected that one. Her eyes widened when she saw the chicken's… shocked look? She figured it'd just be enraged further, if it was still kicking. But it'd paid more attention to the eggs--empty eggs, she realized after a moment--and it'd sounded… sad?

Her nose wrinkled, both from the horrid stench and the potential implications of that, either of which she was a fan of.

She waved her hand rapidly in front of her face, trying to wave away the smoke quick as possible as she gagged somewhat. Hey, at least it was gone. The swearing got a grin out of her, though. "Told you my magic's explosive. Didn't think the thing would turn into weird smoke though. Youma turn into dust, and it doesn't stink from what I've seen," she mumbled more to herself, lips pursing as she eyed the place the chicken had been. The paving stones still bore the claw marks from it.

"This city gets a lot of weird magical… events? Visitors? Coincidences? I don't know why that is, but it's probably along the same vein of why so many humans are born with senshi and other starseeds, either in the city itself, or eventually seem to move here eventually."

Her smile was softer as she looked back to the other senshi, resting her hands on her hips. "You okay? Your stuff, too, not sure how much of a beating that took." She nodded to the bag Jihlava used to smack the weird bird upside the head and then some. There was a… a bit of a hesitation before she offered, "If you'd be comfortable speaking with me about what you've experienced before arriving on Earth, I can try to answer any questions you have about all this."

Quote:
Was she okay? If she were to be honest with herself, most assuredly not. She’d left the only home she’d known for a vague promise of… something whispered into her heart. She’d been living wild in an Earth park. She was in drastic need of a bath and a bed that she didn’t have to share with wriggly things and she’d just watched a massive bird explode. No, she was not okay. Not at all.

But all she said was, “I’m fine.”

Glancing down at the sack held loosely in one of her hands, Jihlava crouched and opened it to reveal multiple books, some trinkets and a great many gems and golden coins. Shrugging a little, she sifted through things.

“I don’t think any lasting harm was done. I just grabbed things before I left and let go of home. I… I…,” Jihlava paused, closing her eyes against the tears that would come if she didn’t take herself in hand this moment. Was she comfortable talking about it? There was really no reason why not. And if it meant that she would get answers to, well. To all of this, then that would be very good indeed. “I felt the call to come to Earth, you know. So I just grabbed things because I remembered Poppa said that Earthlings needed to be paid for things if anyone ever visited. He’s gone, you know,” she said, a distance in her voice that implied a great many unpleasant things. “Mum too. Everyone’s gone. I was the only one left for such a long time...”

Jihlava’s desire to appear strong and unmoved broke as she hugged the sack close and began to cry quietly. In all the centuries alone, she’d never vocalized her loss. She’d thought it, of course. But never said it because saying the words out loud would make it real and mean that she really was all alone. That everyone was gone beyond retrieval. That the chaos that had crept in somehow had won.

Quote:
The contents of the bag was… both surprising, and not, when she stopped to think about it. Then Jihlava explained her collection, and certainly very wise advice from… Poppa? Father? Possibly, with Mum mentioned shortly after…

I was the only one left for such a long time.

Solaris crouched slowly beside the other senshi, hands lifting somewhat to console her but pausing and going to her own lap instead. Preference for permission before touching people. Everyone had different customs and such. She could only offer soft words for the time being. "I'm so sorry. What you've gone through is horrific, and your losses--" She didn't feel right saying she could sympathize or empathize or… anything. "--I'm so sorry," was all she could settle on instead.

She gave the other woman whatever time she needed to mourn before speaking softly again, "I know some nice spots around here we can sit at and talk. And… hm. Do you like sweet foods?" Some water, and an ice cream cone, Solaris thought, would do Jihlava good. "Or would you prefer a more filling food?" Didn't matter how late it was--fast food joints always had options available.

Slowly, she stood, offering a hand if the other needed the assistance or contact. There were better places to talk than a stinky zone, and the night was still warm. She'd do what she could for the other senshi. Solaris herself had been fortunate enough to run into people immediately who were able to assist her in getting acclimated and understand the situation there on Earth. Doing any less was unthinkable to her.

Solaris did manage to nab a couple of Sapphire Star Charms--one for each of them.
