Anastasia had a busy week with the art project between arguing with Levi and the tension between her and Evie. A good sort of tension, but tension, nonetheless. There had been something about the feeling of her hand around her own that was comforting and almost, in a way, that made her heart skip a beat. She had managed to keep her cool in the moment but later that evening in the confines of her quarters where she could drop her act she had breathed out and covered her face with a pillow once she removed her make up. She shouldn't be feeling like this, this was wrong, no? She had figured she'd find a male student attractive and while she did, there was something about Evie that pulled her in, and she couldn't fight it.
The next day, Saturday, she began the process of getting dressed and thought about what she wanted to do. She didn't want to remain around the school, so she would go see the town. She pulled on her best easy to move in outfit, the pants baggy enough for them to appear to be a skirt unless someone looked close enough. She had pulled the accessories on over it and pulled her hair back as she braided it and hummed the song her mother used to sing to her when she did her hair. Something about the fact that she could walk among those who weren't royal as well and feel totally at home was a nice feeling. She started out her life at a lower standing after all, it was only chance. Chance and her persistence to perform when her mother pleaded her not to. At first, she felt betrayed when she realized her mother knew, but in the end, she was glad she didn't be raised at the castle. There were mixed feelings about the situation, but she was glad she met Finny and Gwen. She was given this wonderful opportunity and was going to make the most of it.
She was soon dressed, and she left her dorm, sliding out as she avoided familiar gazes. She wanted to be alone today. She spent the morning walking along the market and chatting with people happily. She had ended up with a new basket, some baked goods and she asked around to what else would be a good thing to go see, under the guise that she was new to town. She was directed towards the community garden, and she felt her heart swell at the idea that this existed here, this close to the school. She found it easily, her eyes widening as she looked over the lovingly cared for flowers. Lush, green ferns. There were even some vegetables and as she looked up at the centerpiece that had been there for years now, she felt her breath catch in her throat. ' It reminds me of my mother's garden...' she thought to herself before she sighed, a relaxed smile forming on her face. She didn't have any tension from the school, the royals, her classes...it all melted away as she pictured what her mother would say about the tall tree. " It's so beautiful, you would have loved it, mom." she whispered before the crunching of the ground behind her made her tense up and her name slipped from someone's lips. In an all too familiar voice. She spun around, her expression briefly a surprised look before she blinked, heat rising in her cheeks as she looked down and away, coughing into her hand. " Oh, um, Evie. I vasn't expecting to see anyone out here..." she murmured, hoping that in some world she wasn't busted, that she didn't see that longing look to be back home again. Her father would be so disappointed in her if she had let her guard down that fast.

Evie had another restless night. By the time her eyes blinked open before dawn on Saturday, she knew there was no point in trying to sleep again. Insomnia wasn’t exactly a stranger to her, though it never came without reason. Lately, her nerves had been stretched thin, assignments piling up, her focus slipping, and worse, her mind kept circling back to the past week. Being forced to work on a project with Levi had been… difficult. She’d kept things civil, smiled when she needed to, cracked jokes where she could. But underneath all that, something painful stirred, something she hadn’t felt in years. Levi was a living reminder of where she came from, of the lowest points in her life. Of who she used to be.
And then there was the new guy, Karen? No, Cherry? She rolled her eyes just thinking about him. Whatever his name was, he came in hot. He was a p***k, and somehow, even more of a d**k than Levi. The way he’d slid in next to Ana that first day… Evie’s jaw clenched. She let out a sharp exhale and swung a punch at the training dummy, this time picturing his face. Who the hell did he think he was? Getting cozy with Ana like that when it was obvious she was uncomfortable? Her eyes narrowed as she pulled her fist back and landed another hard hit. Hay spilled from the seams which made her stop. Her chest rose and fell with her breath as she stared at the torn burlap. She wasn’t going to let herself get heated over it.
She and Anastasia were friends now, or at least, she hoped they were. Sure, there was tension. Sure, Ana made her chest tighten like she was a teenager with a dumb crush. And yeah, maybe she thought about her a little too often. Whatever. She crossed her arms and leaned against the wooden post, drawing in a long, calming breath. Besides, what were the chances someone like Ana would even be into women? Evie pushed off the dummy and made her way to the fence to grab her jacket. She’d been training for hours and knew better than to push her body past its limits. Risking an injury wasn’t worth it.
Back at the dorm, she stripped and stepped under the hot spray of the shower. The chill in the air had made her sweat feel like ice on her skin during the walk back, but the steam, the heat? It was heaven. She braced her hands against the cool tile and let the water roll over her, breathing in the comfort it brought. Maybe she’d go into town. It was a beautiful day, and she hadn’t had much time to explore the area surrounding the Academy yet.
She eyed her closet and settled on something simple, light blue cargo pants and a black cropped sweater. Laid-back and practical. Her mom hated when she wore it because it showed her midriff, which made her like it even more. She checked her reflection, adjusted the hem, then turned on her heel and headed out. As she walked down the corridor, she exchanged brief greetings and warm waves with the people she passed. She was approachable, friendly even, it was her thing. When she smiled, no one asked questions. Outside, the air was crisp, the temperature already warming since morning which made her glad that she left her jacket behind. The walk to town cleared her head, the sky bright and open above her. This was exactly what she needed.
By the time she reached the town square, a small weekend market was still in full swing. Stalls overflowed with fruits, vegetables, handmade blankets, and strange little trinkets. Evie took her time meandering through, pausing at a quilt stand manned by a group of older women whose handiwork was clearly crafted with love. She made a mental note to come back later. She succeeded in resisting the urge to buy everything, though she did cave and grab a shiny red apple. Her stomach had been growling since that mornings workout, and the first bite was absolute heaven.
Evie peeled away from the crowd, wanting to wander on her own for a bit. The old buildings around her were built with purpose, solid and enduring, with the kind of architecture that had clearly withstood war. Then, she noticed something, a large patch of green just past the last street corner. Drawn to it, she walked toward what appeared to be a garden, maybe a park. It was surprisingly vibrant, with flowers still blooming despite the season, and-
-Evie’s thoughts stalled.
Standing near the centerpiece of the garden was a familiar figure, a woman with deep brown hair and an absurdly distracting silhouette. She was wearing a soft, flowing jumpsuit, or maybe it was a dress? Either way, it made her thoughts short-circuit. Evie froze, watching her. She’d caught herself doing this a few times over the past week, just… watching…admiring. Not that she’d ever admit it. But something about Ana was different now. When they’d worked on the project together, she’d been all business, stern, bossy, borderline intimidating-not that Evie minded. But now? Ana looked… calm, and happy. There was a softness in her expression that Evie had never seen before. It tugged at something in her chest. “Ana?” Her tone was quiet, and a little unsure, despite knowing full well who it was.
Ana turned, visibly startled, but then her cheeks flushed pink, that same color Evie had only seen when she teased or openly flirted with her. The sight of it made Evie’s stomach twist in the best and worst way.
“Oh, um, Evie. I vasn’t expecting to see anyone out here…”
She sounded like she’d been caught doing something wrong, though she was literally just standing in a garden. Evie raised a brow, smirking as she stepped forward, “I could say the same thing, you know.” She moved closer but then diverted at the last second, casually circling the centerpiece. Her heart was racing, her stomach doing backflips, but her expression was cool, easy. Evie hated that she had this crush, hated that Ana’s eyes, those big brown unfairly beautiful, expressive eyes, always managed to catch her off guard. Coming back around, Evie let her fingers brush the stone centerpiece before leaning against it, arms stretched out to either side, “So,” A coy grin slid onto her lips, “What brings you to my garden?” She let the teasing lilt hang in the air before glancing down to the basket at Ana’s feet, “Went to the market too? I’m surprised we didn’t run into each other.”
