Life on the Whispering Witch continued, weeks sliding into months before Illapha quite realized how much time was passing. Tavihe had cemented themselves securely into his life, installing themselves permanently into his room with all the greedy pleasure of a spoiled perzi. Outside their bed, they managed to affect an air of apathy towards one another - a protective film of possessiveness that they pretended was only physical.

Those who knew Illapha well knew better, but considering he kept most people at an arm's length he wasn't worried about it. Still, the crew knew they were intimate, their lewd jokes were proof enough of that, and as time passed Illapha could recognize signs of danger creeping on the horizon.

Some nights, when they were apart due to work or hobby, he pretended he would do the responsible thing and end it before they got themselves too deep. But then Tavihe would be in his arms again, and that conviction fell to pieces.

Tavihe was a creature of the moment, and so the passage of time meant little to them; time was measured in trips to shore, in ships captured or boarded, in 'cargo' delivered from port to port. Beyond that, life was broken down into episodes of hard labor and work, and pleasureful moments of drink or companionship. Life wasn't stable enough on a ship like this to ever get bored of it, the work varied enough from day to day in its difficulty that by the time money hit their hands, they were eager to spend it for a moment away from it all.

Only Illapha's involvement kept Tavihe from spending it all; he never took their money, or told them what to do with it, but always got a crease in his brow that looked so WORRIED that Tavihe would give in and hide a portion away in a floor board in their cabin, just as an emergency fund.

Still. Tavihe liked to enjoy themselves, so when suddenly their drinking partners on the crew refused to pour for them, or even invite them to the gambling sessions that often led to them all sloshed and broke, they grew resentful and angry. Stomping to their room, they burst inside and flopped dramatically on the bed, complaining viciously to a bemused Illapha.

It started so imperceptibly that he almost missed it. The crew, usually so rough and danger seeking with each other, began to give Tavihe a wide berth. Indra's goons kept shooting the Kawena searching looks every now and then, infrequently enough that Illapha missed it almost completely. It wasn't until tonight, when Tavihe burst into their now shared room in a huff, that a creeping sense of horrified comprehension swept into them with the force of a cart.

Tavihe and Illapha had rolled into bed only a month or so into their stay on board; it wasn't as if they'd been around long enough to see this pattern, not like Illapha had.

Tossing aside the scroll he'd been reading just to assuage his boredom, Illapha crawled to the pallet and, without explaining, shoved his hands against Tavihe's belly. It wasn't as if it was difficult, since they wore it bare most times.

Relief sank through him - there was no surprising firmness or roundness, just the delicious squish of healthy flesh and belly.

Oh? Tavihe's mouth snapped shut, pleased at the image of their lover crawling to them, eyes intense. When he put his hands on them, the Kawena sighed and flopped backwards, arms behind their head, intent on enjoying the attention. However, soon enough the touches stopped. They gave a displeased grunt. "Hey? I thought you were heading somewhere fun?"

Gods forbid - given his realization, the last thing Illapha wanted was to give in to the temptations and risk becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. He shivered then sat back, pushing his curls back from his face so he could just… breath for a moment, trying to calm himself from the sweep of panic.

"You aren't pregnant."

Uhhhh…? Frowning, Tavihe propped themselves up on their elbows, peering down at their gut. "I don't think so? I don't feel any different." Maybe a surprise pregnancy should have been a scary thought, but Tavihe had never really been careful. It wouldn't even be their first scare - they were free with their body, at least before Illapha.

Amusement creased their eyes, and Tavihe nudged at Illy's leg with their foot. "Don't tell me you only just realized that could happen?"

How were they so unconcerned! Hissing out a breath through his teeth, Illapha glowered at his lover, assessing. "The crew probably thinks you are." He explained, sharply. "Probably why they aren't drinking with you anymore." Without meaning to, he folded his arms, a gesture that would have seemed stand offish to anyone who didn't know him well - to those that knew him, it was more a self-soothing gesture. It betrayed his stress, in this case.

"Oh. That… explains a lot. …Is that bad? If I can't stop it, I've heard the captain is more generous than most." Tavihe shrugged, but finally sat up, looking at Illapha with growing concern despite their usual lackadaisical attitude. "It wouldn't be the end of the world, Illy. They'd put me up on shore - I'd get to enjoy life without work for a while, and they'll even take care of the kid after it's all done. Aw… you'd miss me, huh?"

Illapha froze, his self soothing motions cutting short. Instead, his hands dropped into his lap, twisting uncomfortably at the cloth there. He shouldn't be surprised. Tavihe wasn't really - they didn't ever mention kids, not beyond admitting that they were bothered by how their ship treated the ones they traveled with. But that wasn't the fate that would await a child in this situation. No… the captain (Indra, really, but Tavihe still didn't know that Xenia was powerless in this scenario) wouldn't waste a novelty like this as cheap labor, to be worked until their tiny bodies expired or became too expensive to care for.

He didn't know what they did with the hybrid kids born on shore. Sold them, of course, but to who? But it was obvious that if the captain caught Tavihe pregnant, and sent them to shore, they'd be closely guarded and any child they had would be taken away as soon as the milk was dry.

"Of course I would." Illapha whispered, swallowing hard. Then he looked at Tavi, really looked. "You'd really be okay with that?"

(5/10)

"Of course not." Tavihe shrugged a shoulder, playfully fluffing one of their earrings with a fingertip, eyes averted towards the uncovered porthole. "Pregnancy sucks, from what I've heard. Childbirth more so. I've heard enough mams screaming to not want anything to do with that if I can help it."

They didn't notice Illapha's discomfort, not until they finally looked at him again and saw the stoic, guarded look back on his face. Immediately they felt a swoop of guilt catching their breath in their chest. "… Oh. You'd want it."

He drew in a slow breath, feeling as if his heart was crumpling in his chest. "I don't know if I - I don't—" Illy fisted a hand in the long side of his hair, grimacing. "I don't know! But that doesn't mean I'd want them stolen away! I hate my parents for making me like this-" He swept a hand over himself, "If I had a kid… I wouldn't let anyone sell them to who knows where!"
PostPosted: Sat May 03, 2025 8:15 pm

(6/10)

That guilt only intensified, breaking through the cage they'd snapped their honest feelings into. Because yeah, it wasn't as if Tavihe really didn't mind the prospect of being imprisoned on shore until they popped, treated like a breedmare only to have the fruits of their literal labor torn away from their breast.

But what were they going to do otherwise? Look at them! They were too much of a mess to be a parent, they spent all their time robbing and murdering people, spending on their money on alcohol and pretty things. They grew up in a loving, but flawed household, and that was already enough to mess them up - how badly would things go if THEY were parents? "Ok. Then… we'd run." Tavihe didn't like the thought of breaking contract - dubious though their ship was, a broken contract was enough to get them blacklisted from most other assignments. It would mean life on these ports would become much more difficult, if not impossible.

"Or we break up for a while until our contracts are up, then meet up on shore and figure things out from there."

(7/10)

Right. They could run. As long as they didn't get pregnant before their contracts were up, then Indra couldn't stop them from walking off the ship. It wouldn't be fun, abstaining from Tavihe's touch for the remaining few months of his contract, but-

Immediately, his thoughts turned to Xenia and he froze, breath catching. Oh. "I… can't." Illapha admitted, painfully.

(7/10)

"I know I'm irresistable, but you'll survive big boy!" Tavihe teased, grinning. But as Illapha remained silent that smile fell, their expression sharpening. "… You're not going to leave when contract is up?" They asked, dubiously. At his continued lack of answer they grit their teeth together, incensed. "What? You hate this ship - don't lie, I can see it on your face! You hate the crew, you hate the work, and you're not callous enough to be doing it all just for the gold! Don't you want this? Don't you want me?" They slapped their hand to their chest in a 'look at me' motion, throat going tight with feeling.

He opened his mouth to argue, but Tavihe cut him off, their voice raising. He shot a look towards the door, knowing full well how thin the walls here were - so he leaned in quickly, one hand gently grasping Tavihe's wrist, over their heart, while the other lightly pressed over their mouth to shut them up.

He kissed the top of his knuckles, with his hand working as a barrier between their lips, gazing heatedly into Tavihe's eyes in hopes they'd understand just how wrong they were. Of COURSE he wanted them.

"More than I've wanted anyone." He whispered, fiercely, shoving their hand out of the way so he could press the heel of his palm to Tavihe's heart, feeling the erratic skittering of emotion there. He ached for them in that moment.

"I'm yours. But I promised myself I'd… I'd make things better here. I can't give up now. I'd never be able to live with myself if I did."
