It would seem that breaking into his room and forcing their way into his bed had broken the ice between them, because in the months following the freak chill Tavihe and Illapha had gotten closer. Or, they'd at least gotten closer in the physical sense. The training continued, but now held a shared heat and subtle shift that meant at the end of a session instead of stalking off to opposite corners of the ship, they often crashed their way into Illapha's cabin where they stayed until they were needed for work again.
Tavihe had no complaints about the new arrangement; Illapha was much softer and more enjoyable than his reserved facade would suggest, and they found themselves enjoying the company immensely. It was nice to not have to seek out random crewmates or companions at shore - much more pleasant and less likely for them to leave the encounter unsatisfied.

For his part, Illapha was surprised at how well he and Tavihe got along when the focus wasn't on sussing them out for Xenia's secret. Tavihe was clever and cheeky, their humor often dry and dark enough that he'd laugh despite his best efforts to stay stoic. They hadn't needed to be told not to act inappropriately infront of the crew; their newfound physical relationship would have absolutely no impact on Tavihe's standing in the crew, and they hadn't seemed to think it would. Which was something to their credit, as Illapha had expected that to be the reason he'd been sought out this way in the first place.
In short, their relationship was good; as long as Illapha studiously kept the question of Tavihe's loyalty to Xenia out of his head.

… You see, after spending a great deal of time with Illapha, it was impossible not to notice some things. On first impression, the tall, large, brooding hybrid seemed stand offish with the rest of the crew, even the captain. He wasn't quite her right hand man, that would be first mate Indra, but he was someone she handed jobs off to frequently, and he was often seen shadowing her like a bodyguard. But he never seemed pleased about it; if anything he came off as resentful of the captain, grudgingly respectful but not particularly fond.
And yet, when no one was looking at him, Illapha spent a lot more time meeting with her than he liked others to believe. Lately, Tavihe had seen him skulking about both the ship and on crew leave ducking into places he had no business being.
At first, it was a curiosity, nothing more. But today Tavihe, hearing some of the crew jeering at Illapha about his very expensive visit to a house of ill repute on shore, they saw red.

Illapha had just returned to his cabin, exhausted from a busy day of errands on his shore leave, when the door behind him knocked open. On instinct, he rounded towards it, fists raised, but at seeing Tavihe he relaxed instantly, rolling his eyes. "You tryin' to give me a heart attack?"

Instead of immediately answering, Tavihe snapped the door closed behind them, then used all their newfound hand-to-hand knowledge from training with Illapha to shove the larger man into the wall, where he landed heavily enough the wood shook and groaned in complaint at his weight. Even then, they recognized that he had to have let them push him with how easily he went, and they bared their teeth at him in annoyance, blue eyes shimmering with rage.
"Well, if all else fails I can stick you in the heart with my knife to finish the job." They snarled, hands curled into fists at their side. "What do you think you're doing? Going to that place?"

Yes, Illy let himself be shoved, but in all fairness this wasn't a new thing between them. Tavihe was very physical, a bit rough perhaps in spite of how much larger Illapha was than them, and when things got heated they weren't exactly gentle. Still, the look of pure incensed anger on their face was new, enough so that the lewd grin fell from Illapha's face, shifting instead into open shock.
That place? What was— Oh. His expression smoothed out, but inside his heart was hammering in near panic. He was so used to having no ties, no qualms about where he was supposed to meet with Xenia's various allies for support or information, that he hadn't thought twice about going to a red-light district building. But clearly, Tavihe disagreed. The reassurance that nothing happened was on his tongue, but Illapha choked on it because… because how was he supposed to explain without breaking Xenia's secret to Tavihe?
And yes, he enjoyed Tavihe a lot, but… did he trust them with this? "… You're serious. I wasn't aware this was supposed to be just us." His chest surprisingly ached to say it, but he delivered to words with an almost bored tone.

Tavihe bristled when Illapha's face dropped to an almost uncaring, blase look. How dare he?! "You've made me the laughing stock of the crew, if one of those cheap harlots is better company than me." They snapped, instead, though immediately they realized the words weren't true.

Illapha clocked that instantly as well, his eyebrows climbing his face in open surprise. They were crewmates on a ship that held no qualms in killing, looting, and even capturing prisoners. Monogamy was more laughable out here than sharing partners - he heard the falsehood in Tavihe's excuse in the same moment they realized it themselves.
He slowly smiled. Was he trying to tease? Maybe, but it felt more genuine than anything else; his chest felt warm because beyond Tavihe's fae-like, mercurial behaviour, this was perhaps the most blatantly honest thing they'd ever said, and… and it suggested they cared for him.

Ugh! Ew. Tavihe wrinkled their nose and sneered at the soppy look that lit up Illapha's face. But - but it was better than a pitying, or even amused smirk. That smile made their belly tug with an unnamed, but warm feeling, and on instinct they shoved at his arm, noting with annoyance that this time he barely even moved. "Shut up."

Illapha laughed, holding his hands up in surrender. "I didn't say anything!" His shoulders shook silently and he shook his head, letting the moment stretch comfortable. Then he lowered his hands again and really looked at Tavihe, as if seeing them again for the first time. "… I mean it. I didn't realize… that this was exclusive, you and me."

He was laughing! The big brute was laughing at them! But after a moment, Tavihe let out a half-hearted chuckle of their own, tossing their eyes up to the creaking roof of the cabin as the discomfort of moments before dissipated. When Illapha spoke, they slowly returned their gaze to him, considering, that squirming feeling in their gut finally identifying itself as jealousy.
"You really think I'd let others have what's mine?" Tavihe asked, lowly, crowding the larger man against the cabin wall. It was laughable, considering how much smaller Tavihe was, but from here they could spot a half-healed bruise at chest level from one of their previous encounters. That impotent rage swelled again, to think that he'd been with someone else who had been allowed to see it, maybe even touch it.

Oh. Illapha held his breath when Tavihe pressed in closer, swallowing thickly. It was perhaps the most sensual thing someone had ever said to him, and yet behind that wave of desire he felt… guilt.
"I didn't. Sleep with anyone, I mean."

Tavihe's eyes shot to Illapha's, flat with disbelief. Was he really trying to lie to them? "You think I'm stupid enough to believe that?" They asked, pulling away from their closeness as if burnt, or disgusted.

"No, I mean it-" Illapha felt his face heat up with embarrassment. In this moment, he acutely felt how young he really was, how inexperienced especially in matters of lo— of the heart. He reached for Tavihe, then almost whined in loss when they moved away from his touch. "Tavihe it's- I didn't…"
It was true. He hadn't actually shared himself with someone else - he hadn't since this thing between him and Tavihe began - but he knew already that he wouldn't correct that assumption. He wouldn't tell the truth.
He loved Xenia. Not in a romantic sense, but they'd been allies long enough… and been through enough life-threatening scenarios together that he wasn't just in it for the money anymore. He probably hadn't been for a long time. Now, he was invested - he wanted Xenia to succeed, to finally be free, and he simply didn't trust Tavihe enough to bring them into the fold… no matter how much he found he cared for them. Not unless Xenia expressly allowed the risk.
… Maybe he could bend the truth though?
"I was meeting with someone. An old friend. I give them my earnings, and they… they care for old crew. Or find old prisoners the Witch has sold off."

Tavihe inspected Illapha, taking in how that bravado, the fake stoicism he normally held so close melted away into a nervous energy that made him seem so fragile. There was the impulse to laugh at him, or to tear apart any interest they felt for the man now that his persona had been ripped to pieces; because this soft, sweet thing wasn't attractive was he? Not to someone cold, and heartless like Tavihe. … Right?
He was either incredibly sentimental or an incredible good actor. … And after the company they'd kept until now, Tavihe knew without a shadow of a doubt which was true. The little woman's comb they'd found kept like a treasure wrapped in the only high-quality silks he owned, tucked away with his most important things, had betrayed that fact weeks ago.
"You spend… months on THIS ship, and give your money away as charity?" Tavihe asked slowly.
