Deinos blew out a visible puff of air in the cold as he decided to take a short break. The weather had turned frigid seemingly overnight and Venus and him had only had enough time to protect her plants so far. He had set out early in the morning to try and surprise her by clearing a walkway so she could still check on the plants safely.
At first he had thought maybe tamping it down with his thick hoof pads would do the trick, his weight being good leverage to stamp it flat. But on second consideration he realized in the night it would just turn icy and slippery. He couldn't have her getting hurt on his watch. He often felt useless in his Herd back home, but if she got hurt he would never forgive himself. So, instead, he spent the extra time to shovel a path, his hooves making quick work of it. Next step would be to make a path to the small stream so they could still find fresh water. It was frozen over in the night, but his weight would make quick work of that. He was actually starting to feel useful.

Venus had been stocking up on herbal meds for the winter to make sure that they would be okay for the harsh weather. She sighed at her plants. "I know.. I know.. The winter will be harsh one." She frowned softly. Her ears then perked up at the sounds of snow being moved. "Hmm? Oh, dear.. What is he doing now?" She glanced at the fire that was getting low. "I'll have to get him to put more wood to the fire.." She trots to the cave entrance while looking for him. "Deinos!" She yelled out, walking onto the cleared pathway. She widened her eyes at the covered plants then at the clear paths. "Oh, that sweet big boy.." Her eyes softened for a moment. That is when she noticed him by the small stream. "Deinos! Boys! Come on in! It is getting cold!" She sniffed the air. "... " She glanced towards the sky, narrowing her eyes.

The curled vines on Deinos's back perked up and turned to the sweet noise. They had been tucked in against the flower on his back for warmth. Though he thought them a little spoiled in the knitted tube socks Venus had made each of them, he had to admit they did look rather cute. Deinos's own head lifted from the part of the stream he had been stomping, the tips of his ankles going numb from the splashing cold water.
Before he could finish listening to Venus call for him his vines started to pull him in her direction. He scowled at them and remarked "Okay okay, we'll go in for a bit." He grumbled to himself as he headed towards the mouth of the cave and the female he was sharing it with till he went back to his herd. "Nooow you want to move about. But when I was doing all that work shoveling you pretended to be hibernating. I could have found you guys some bark shovels to help, you know." Instead of paying him any attention they pulled harder, eager to get by the fire. Even in their little tubes they hated the cold. Deinos had to agree with them. He much rathered warm and rainy than cold and snowy. It would be nice to warm himself besides the fire.

Venus was watching the dark wall of the clouds that seem to be moving in their direction. "... Damn it." She whispered to herself before glancing over to Deinos, giving him a smile. "Hello, boys." She nuzzled Deinos and each of the vines. "Deinos, dear.. Thank you for making the pathway and covering up my plants. You did it just in time." She gestured to the dark cloud wall. "We got a blizzard coming in." She frowned softly. "I know you put in all of that work.. I am grateful for it." She glanced towards the stack of woods. "Do you think we have enough for the storm?" She asked.

Deinos smiled as each of his vines nuzzled Venus. Their cold little cheeks giving her a kiss of a chill. He looked up and frowned after her declaration of a storm. He had been so focused on the ground he hadn't even payed attention to the weather around him. He was glad he had been able to get the plants covered, with any luck they would survive the storm. But all his hard work with the paths and the stream would be wasted.
His shoulders slumped as his feelings of usefulness withered away in the cold. He had to shake his head to clear his thoughts. Now was no time to wallow in self pitty. He eyed the stack of wood in theor cave and took a lung full of the warm air. "I don't think so. Luckily we have that large pile we collected earlier. But if we get snowed in we won't be able to reach it. I can get us a few trips with before the snow starts to fall... I think..." Deinos smiled a little wickedly then. "You might have to convince the boys to help with extra nuzzles" The vines, realizing he was talking about them nodded vigorously in their aggreement.

Venus frown at his slumped pose. "Deinos, dear... You did a great job. I'll help with the wood as well." She moves to kiss him on the cheek then nuzzled the Vines. "...You boys need to start helping Deinos more.. or NO MORE NUZZLES for the night. Am I understood?" She gives each of them sharp death glares. "We have to work together. The winter is will be very harsh this year."
She then trots to the entrance. 'We should be okay, getting another stack in. We have a storage area in the cave.. So if we get all of the wood in, we should be good. I am so glad that we found the biggest cave. But.. once the storm moved on.. You boys need to head back to the herd for awhile." She glanced at Deinos and the vines.

Deinos gave her a weak smile at the praise. Without her thawing his heart he would feel cold and empty. Her kindness was a big reason why he speant so much time with her and away from his herd. He tried not to frown at her insistence of helping him. Instead, after her nuzzles he squared his shoulders and announced to his vines in a playful deep voice. "Hear that boys? Unless you help this little lady is going to freeze to death trying to gather wood for your comfort. So it's up to us to make sure she spends as little time out there as possible." His vines would have rolled their eyes at him if they had them, but upon hearing Venus's threats of no snuggles they sprung into action and started pulling him along. A soft chuckle escaped Deinos as he walked side by side with Venus on the way to the wood pile. "I wish I knew your secret on getting them to listen to you. Though they don't really care about the snuggles I can offer them."
His face became a little somber at her mentioning his herd. "....Are you sure? I don't mind staying with you a little longer. I don't think they really miss me that much." His words getting quieter the more self doubt creeper in. His eyes looked at her as his face aimed forward. "Besides, I don't mind helping out around here. Are you sure you'll be okay with this crazy weather?"

Venus watched Deinos and the vines before having a fit of giggles come out of her. "Oh, goodness.. You boys are too precious." She then gave another sharp glare at the vines. "You need to listen more to Deinos or you won't get more of your coats, boys. I am already making some but I will stop if you give him trouble at any given time." She stood at the entrance, chuckling. "You just have to be firm like a father towards them... They'll listen if they know what's good for them." She gives one of the vines a n**, showing that she means business. "I hate being firm but I can see how much trouble they give you. "
She starts walking down the path. 'Oh, hun.. I should be okay after the storm. We do have some dry up hay or whatever it is that I got form that abandoned place that was for humans. "I could never take you away f---.... " In that moment, all four of her legs spread out quickly due to the ice on the snow. She lets out a huge pained yelp.

Deinos nodded as he listened to her advice on getting more control over his vines. He wasn't sure if it was how he was raised, or something deeper within him but he always felt like he was incapable of being stern. He never wanted to give anyone, including his vines, a reason to be upset with him. Even at the detriment of himself and his feelings. He released a little puff of breath that had been trapped in his chest. He knew she was right, and he knew he would eventually need to learn how to be able to put his foot down. .....Eventually.
With his thoughts on his troubles and loading all possible non walking limbs full of firewood he hadn't been paying attention to their path back to the cave. It seems he had accidently missed a spot when clearing the path and Venus had found a spot of ice. All thoughts of his vines, wood collecting, and returning to his herd vanished in the split second he heard her cry. His head whipped around to see her on the ground and his heart broke.
"VENUS!!" He rushed towards her, the vines frozen in shock as they clung to the wood. He knelt beside her, worry morphing his face. "What happened? What can I do?" He reached out to touch her cheek but stopped, afraid to touch her incase she had hit her head or had some unseen injury.

Venus had hit the iced ground a bit harder than she thought. She lets out a few pained breaths, glancing up at him. "Sweetheart, I am okay." She winced as she slowly tries to get back up onto her feet. "Oh, that hurts... Ow.." She stumbled a bit as she leans against him. Her ears flattened down as she glances towards her wings. "Oh good.. They are okay.." She then looks up towards him once again, nuzzling him gently.
"You couldn't see this patch of ice, dear.. it is black ice, I think. I heard the humans call it that.." She took a moment to get her body completely up and shakes slightly. ".....Winter sucks." She chuckled as if she was talking to herself. "Deinos.. It is okay. You did not one damn thing wrong." She glanced into his eyes. "Okay?" She glanced at one of the vines. "I am okay, boys."

Deinos nuzzled her protectively, looking her over for any bruises starting to bloom before letting her rest against him. A vine wrapped gently around her midsection to try and help take the weight off her limbs as they walked to the cave. "I know. But I could have done better." He grumped to himself more than her. He let her gently slide to the ground next to the fire as he put the firewood away in its pile in the corner. "Yoe were smart to think of replenishing our stock, but i wish you'd have let me do it." He smiled at her as he walked back, hoping to make her laugh he flexed his muscles, even a few vines joining in. "I'm super strong! It's what I'm best at."
His nerves settled down at the sound of her giggles bouncing off the cave walls. He settle in next to her besides the fire and let his vines push her against him so that she was using him as a pillow. "At least we can relax during the storm. There's no need to think of anyone or anything with the snow blocking my path back to the herd."

Venus sighed softly at the feel of the vine around her midsection while she walked back to the cave. She allowed Deinos and his vines guide her to where they wanted her to be. "The way the storm walls looked.. I didn't want to take any chances. You aren't used to this area. I know how the winter can be here. It is why I chose this cave.. For us. I wanted to make sure that it was big enough for you to live comfortably whenever you wanted to stay here with me. It is your second home for life, Deinos." She lays her body against him, nuzzling him and the vines.
"As for your herd, I never wanted to take you away from your h---.." She widened at his words and pose before bursting in giggles. "Oh, my goddess.. Boys.. " She blushed slightly. "I know.. I feel safe and protected here more than you realized, dear." She then looked to the vines. "My boys.. You need to help him more. You can't be going nuts when he is trying to do something. Listen to him.. Can you do that for me?" She nudged one of them. "After all, he gave you life. You need to respect him more." She then glanced at Deinos once more. "My dear sweet Deinos. Never.. EVER beat yourself up.. Honey, listen to me. You are one amazing stallion. My best friend. You have no idea how grateful I am to have met you." She smiled softly, giving him a gentle nuzzle along the neck.
