Humming softy to herself, Myth gave the violin case in her hands a final swipe of the cloth to remove any lingering dust and smiled. The case was a thing of beauty, though it was nothing compared to the instrument that had been inside. She'd picked both up from an estate sale along with stacks of yellowing music books. She'd gathered that someone's great-great something had been quite the musician at some point. Not famous, but reliably talented. It made for a nice little story to put on one of her little index cards and place with everything in the front window.
As for the violin itself, she'd had it restrung and tuned. The bow had needed to be restrung as well. Frankly, it was a fair chunk of change to have it done and she hoped the lot would sell so she could recoup some of her money. Everyone she'd consulted had agreed that everything was reasonably valuable based on the age alone even if what she had was not one of the big makers.
Positioning everything in the window, she gave the softly gleaming wood of the violin a final dusting and stepped back. It all looked very pretty. Hopefully someone else would agree and she'd get some business.
Honkzilla Sorry for the delay! Had some stuff come up yesterday that had to be handled.

A series of near misses in traffic had forced Rowan to the conclusion that she probably needed a break. A short one she insisted to herself as she walked. Even she wasn’t certain if she genuinely intended to allow herself to relax or if it was just a pleasant lie she told herself to pacify the quiet but persistent voice that urged her to at least consider the possibility of rest as a means of self-preservation. Just a nice stroll through a nice area with no intention of treating the route as a patrol. If she happened upon something untoward she could address it then, but there was no point in dwelling on what might happen. At least that’s what she tried to convince the rampaging horde of highly caffeinated guinea pigs that had recently been serving as her thought processes. Passing a shop window, the warmth of a violin’s wood caught her eye. It was undoubtedly too expensive for her current budget, but that couldn’t stop her from admiring the craftsmanship. The small display that accompanied it created a familiarly welcoming scene. Deciding to chase the sliver of normalcy among the pandemonium, she walked inside. eldritch stardust No worries, I'm right there with you

Glancing up as the door opened, Myth popped on her best and most welcoming customer service smile.
"Hello! Welcome! Let me know if you're looking for anything in particular or need any help. We've got lemonade in the back provided you're not a sloppy sipper," she added with a chuckle. After a moment, she turned her attention back to the yellowing booklets and papers spread out on the counter before her. She'd put the best looking music in the window, but the rest of it she wasn't sure about. Some of it looked handwritten, but that didn't necessarily mean anything.
"I really should have asked more questions at the sale," she muttered under her breath. Tucking a lavender curl behind her ear, she sighed and tapped her fingers on the counter, gently beating time to the music in front of her.

The smell of age beckoned her forward into the shop’s interior. Surrounded by the vestiges of countless bygone lives, it was easier to exile the fears of the present to the further reaches of her mind. Each display vied for her attention before the violin in the window exerted its pull once more. A human voice shouldn’t have come as a surprise, especially in this setting, but that did nothing to deter her nervous system from insisting that it was. The fact that she managed not to jump felt like a herculean accomplishment, but she opted to take the win. “Oh, hello!” She gave the person behind the counter a smile and a friendly wave, “I’ve never been here before but that violin caught my eye. I don’t see them very often in places like this.”

”Well! Double welcome then and I hope you find things that interest you,” Myth replied. Looking up from the music, she grinned and winked. “First timers get a ten percent discount. It’s my little way of luring folks back here.”
Leaving the music on the counter, she moved towards the window to take the violin out and hand it over to her prospective customer. The fact that it had pulled someone in so quickly after being put on display had to be a good omen, right?
“Well, to be fair, I don’t think little places like mine see them very often out in the wild where they’re available for sale. I got very lucky at an estate sale,” Myth paused and tilted her head slightly as she considered the other woman. “Is it safe to assume that you know something about old music or instruments? The violin came with some old music that I can’t make heads or tails of. I’d be grateful for whatever insight you could give.”
Okay, she was definitely lucky. Even if this lady only knew the tiniest amount, it was still more than Myth herself. She’d be happy just knowing what the songs were since her puzzlers didn’t even have that written down.

The violin was definitely out of Rowan’s price range even with a discount, but the tantalizing softness of the sheet music’s yellowed edges drew her eye with an unsurprising ease. The idea of finding a musical trove at an estate sale was a vague fantasy that lived in the back of her mind alongside daydreams of how she’d spend lottery winnings or collect plant clippings from the Moon. “Um. I actually know a good bit about both.” She felt a bit self-conscious, hoping that she’d be able to back up her claim. It would be a lie to claim any mastery of knowledge on the subject, but she liked to think that time spent in the symphony’s archives gave her at least a slight edge over the average person who might wander in. “I’m actually a music major, going into the master’s program in the fall. I might be able to help with at least a little.” The color rose in her cheeks as she spoke. If nothing else she’d be able to work out the tune. That would be something, right? (Unless it used some ancient regional notation, then she was up the proverbial creek) eldritch stardust I beat my brain scramblies for a bit

"I will," Myth began in a heartfelt tone, "adore you forever if you'd take a look and see if you can make anything out. I am not a musician by any stretch of the wildest imagination. And in this, most of my usual online sources for information aren't super helpful."
Moving quickly, Myth rounded up every spare sheet or booklet that had come with the violin and then seized a little table, dragging it towards a chair. Dropping the music onto it, she waved for the girl to sit.
"Here, make yourself comfortable and take whatever time you need, so long as it doesn't take us into the wee small hours of the dawn," she said with a grin. "Do you need a notepad or anything? Want a lemonade or water? Seriously, don't be afraid to say yes, as you're doing me a huge solid."
Oh yeah, she had definitely lucked out when this girl had come in.
Honkzilla it's all good! i 100% get it.

Excited anticipation rose within her, a nice change from the decidedly apocalyptic excitement of the past several weeks as she leaned over the pages. “A notepad and a pencil would be great, thanks!” She didn’t want to risk spilling a drink on the paper or blotting it with ink. She unconsciously hummed the melody, index finger hovering just over the notation as she read the first sheet. “This one at least is definitely local, it’s so familiar but I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’ll probably come to me when I look at some of the others.” She smiled enthusiastically at the other woman. eldritch stardust I think it would be cool if the owner of the violin was some neat local composer or something

”You got it,” Myth nodded and hurried to grab the requested supplies, coming back and setting them on the table. She listened with interest as the girl said that at least one of the scores was local. She liked local. It always added a fun little footnote to things when she was trying to sell them.
“They worth anything, do you think?” she asked. She wasn’t terribly worried about money, but if she could get some of her investment back, that would be good. “I can’t remember ever reading about any famous local musicians.”
Rather than hover over the other woman, Myth took herself back to her counter and began to sort through random knick knacks. She couldn’t help with the music, but she could do this much.
”Honkzilla” Go for it! I just like them being old. XD A local composer sounds lovely.

Rowan smiled at Myth as the other woman reappeared with the notebook, “Thanks! This is definitely familiar. It’s like when you’ve got a word on the tip of your tongue but can’t quite find it.”The music rose quietly within her as she moved on to the second sheet, eyes flicking excitedly across the page. She definitely knew this one. She wasn’t sure how famous it was outside of local classical music circles, but the composer was an old acquaintance from the depths of a book on local music history. “These are Beulah Major’s.” Recognizing the uselessness of her statement without context she quickly continued, “She was a composer in the 20s, she even conducted a pretty successful orchestra around here which. You know. For the 20s that was so rare for a woman!” Grabbing the notebook she quickly scrawled some information for Myth. “I’ll write down what I know here, I hope that helps some.”eldritch stardust Sweet, it's kind of inspired by some of the little stories I found interning in one of the local archives. There are always interesting people hidden in the old paper

Listening intently as the girl explained, Myth rested her elbows on the countertop and leaned a bit to stretch out her back. A female composer from the 20s? That alone was fascinating. Though she winced a little at Beulah. Just what was it with the old-timeys and the horrific names they saddled their kids with? Sure, Amythra was weird, but at least it should be shortened to Amy if she’d wanted to lead a boring life. But Beulah?!?
“Hey, any bit of information helps!” she instead chose to vocalise. “I’m just thrilled to know anything. Did Ms Majors ever play the violin, do you think? Or did everything just come from a fan?”
Depending on how rare Beulah’s work was, she might be dealing with someone very niche. Which could mean a good bit of money very quickly or she’d be sitting on this stuff for ages because no one who cared lived around here anymore.
“Is it even worth trying to put out for sale?” she asked bluntly. “Or am I better off donating the music to the University library?”

Rowan brightened at the confirmation that she’d helped. She might not be the best in combat, but this at least was something she could manage. “She did actually play, so probably is hers.” She chewed her lip thoughtfully at the second question. She wasn’t an appraiser by any stretch of the imagination, but she knew it was something that some collectors might enjoy. “It’s pretty rare even printed. Handwritten…it has to be even rarer. I’d still try to sell it. Hmm. I actually have an instructor who might be interested. She collects all kinds of local music stuff. It’s kind of her thing.” Excitedly, she grabbed the notebook and pencil before checking her phone for the information. A few quick strokes on the paper and she presented Myth with an email address. “I think she’d love seeing these.” eldritch stardust Beulah was actually a pretty common hideous name in the early 20th century. The woman who inspired the character of Roxie Hart in Chicago was actually named Beulah Annan. People started coming to their senses (about that name anyway) after the 1910s. [x]
