"Ryo" "Bubby"
A mistake was when Ryo had accidentally spilt tea on his sister dress when they were playing. What Ryo had actually done, what he had been doing was much worse. He didn’t want to be a cheater but he was getting dangerously closer to doing so and needed guidance. The only person he trusted to go to was his brother, and thankfully, he knew exactly where he would be. If he wasn’t playing games somewhere he was at the stables.

It was bad enough that his actions had led to him ruining something of Clint’s, but he had almost hurt Altagracia as well. As much distaste he had for her, she still deserved loyalty. If he couldn’t give love, that was the least he could do. Her brother argued that he could break off the engagement, but that would lead to more harm than good. Their being together made everyone happy, well, except themselves. But Altagracia would get the power and status her parents desired, so it was really just Ryo being left in the lurch.

The prince was so distraught on his way to see Clint that he wasn’t even holding Bubby, using his abilities to have the puppet walk beside him. Using his powers in such a way was a sort of grounding for him, as he had to focus more on Bubby than his own wrongdoings. If he stayed stuck in his own thoughts for too long, he was sure he would lose control of his powers. At least this way he was being safe, holding his brother’s scratched record in one arm and the player in the other.

Arriving to the stables, it was easy to spot his brother given that he was the only human there. Taking care of Dandy was something that Ryo’s brother took a lot of pride in, something that Ryo had a lot of respect for. He had never had any pets growing up but seeing how caring his brother could be towards them was comforting. " Brother?" His voice cracked as he attempted to get his attention, unsure where to begin " Clint- I, uh," Even though this was his own brother he still couldn’t find the right words to explain his mistake. Thankfully, that’s what Bubby was for.

Ryo’s wooden friend was still walking beside him, his shoes were starting to get covered in mud, causing Ryo to make a mental note to help him clean up after. Bubby’s voice rang much louder than Ryo’s in the empty stable, " He ******** up. Majorly." If was possible for the wooden doll to glare; he was sure it would have been doing so at him, given how disappointed Ryo was in himself. Not the way the prince would have wanted to be said but it was accurate. He had made a mistake. More than one, to be fair. But where to begin? He looked down at the record in his hand and figured it was best to start with an apology, " I lost control. I’m sorry." His voice was lower, as he couldn't run away from the troubles he caused.

The last three weeks had been a whirlwind of bliss and guilt. So much godsdamned guilt. It had been a miracle that he hadn't been dead-alive. Some of that may have had just a bit to do with Grace. Ever since history class their nightly pool sessions had taken a... decidedly romantic turn. One that involved Clint frequently picking up his brother's fiance by the a** and depositing her onto the pool table they were supposed to be playing on and letting their tongues do the talking.

It was a lot of ********' talking.

Every single night he would enter that pool room telling himself that he wasn't going to do anything to her. Touching, kissing, taking her there on the table was, funnily enough, off of the table. The second she asked him to continue her lessons? The fat went straight into the fryer. He was barkin' at a knot trying to resist her. It didn't matter how much guilt clawed it's way down into his stomach to settle heavy there after the fact. It was impossible to deny he wanted Altagracia.

The only solace that he could take was that Ryo did not love Grace, and she certainly did not love Ryo in return. No matter what, it was a real hair in the butter situation. Even worse in it all, Clint had been acting like a godsdamned goney over the whole thing. Over the last three weeks there were plenty of opportunities to inform Ryo about what was going on behind his back. But for some reason he just couldn't seem to spit it out.

Which might have been why his reaction to Bubby saying Ryo had ******** up majorly was to lean into Dandy's back and mumble under his breath. "Join the ********' club."

Sucking in a long breath, Clint turned to face his brother. Looking down at him still felt strange. Maybe because it hadn't been something that happened gradually over time. Considering the fact that they only saw each other maybe once or twice a year, when he shot up like a sunflower and surpassed his brother's height it was jarring. Or it was possible that it was because he still pictured Ryo as the dark, imposing big brother he'd remembered when he was first shipped off to the stables.

Then his eyes drifted down to the mangled record in his hands. A shock of upset flared through him, one that he carefully kept off of his face. It wasn't his place to be mad about s**t between them right now. Between the two of them, Clint was the chiseler.

Pressing his thumb and index fingers into his eyes, he shook his head. "It's fine." It was not fine. "Happens to the best of us." It didn't happen to most people, actually. "Don't fuss over it." Even now Clint was fussing over where he could replace the record considering he was at Utopia and not the stables and didn't know where anyone bought s**t 'round these parts.

It wasn't until Dandy started stomping her feet that Clint remembered where they were. Sidestepping out of the stall, he found himself pacing for a moment before settling down on a bale of hay. Slumping, he rested his elbow on his knee and then moved to cradle his forehead with his hand. "We also gotta talk. I gotta tell you somethin'."

"Ryo" "Bubby"
Not being upset was a good start. But Clint was a better person than Ryo was. The heir apparent was sure that if it had been he who had his stuff broken, he wouldn’t have been as understanding. The prince was starting to work on his rage, but it came out at times, terrible ones. Thankfully, the foreigner who was with Grace and Ryo appeared to be rather compliant, so he was hopeful no one would speak out.

The idea that the two were able to have these conversations now was not lost on him, but it was still surprising how much his brother had grown. He wasn’t his little baby brother anymore. Ryo knew this already because of the moon eyes that Grace gave him, but it was still a tough pill to swallow. They used to make one another laugh, and as time passed, their relationship spiraled to them having to have tough conversations and relying on one another. It was embarrassing for Ryo to admit how much he had come to lean on his little brother for advice and guidance on everything.

It wasn’t hard to notice that Clint was battling some of his own demons, based on the quick rebuff of the scratched record Ryo presented. The explanation he had prepared would have to wait until he could understand what was biting his brother’s tongue. Getting records here was rather tricky, considering Ryo didn’t have a player of his own, he couldn’t imagine how he was supposed to replace it. Even if Clint was saying not to fuss, it was hard for Ryo’s mind not to wander how he could repay him.

There was a slight panic that washed over him as Dandy made her feelings about Ryo on her territory more than known. The two didn’t have a poor relationship, but he imagined it was easy to associate him with her, no longer receiving his brother’s affections. Similar to Grace in that way, but Ryo preferred the horse. " Of course, my apologies." Ryo apologized, bowing towards the animal, only for Bubby to shoot him a look at how silly he must look. Thankfully, it was just his brother and the horse for the audience.

" Are my quarters okay? I would prefer to get the mud off Bubby’s shoes before it stains." Nodding at the idea of them finding somewhere else to talk, Ryo already had a slight idea of what his brother was going to say to him. But he had already told Clint multiple times that he wasn’t breaking off the engagement between him and Grace. It didn’t matter how close his birthday was. He had a duty to his family; he was the man of the house and needed to be there to protect them, no matter what the cost.

Making their way inside and towards the hallway where his chamber lay, Ryo worried about what Clint might say to him once he revealed his wrongdoing. Having feelings for someone else, even if they didn’t act on them. Ryo wanted to. There had been too many times when he could have for his comfort. He needed Clint’s guidance on how to proceed, even if it meant another lecture about how he should just end his forced engagement. It was eating him up inside not to talk about it with someone.

Opening the door, Bubby was quick to rush in and disappear with a ready servant. " The usual, don’t get any ideas." The puppet muttered as the two disappeared, leaving just Ryo and Clint there to themselves. The silence chilled Ryo to the bone, almost wishing he had made Bubby stay. There were his other companions he could summon, but this was a conversation that Ryo knew he needed to bear himself if he was truly ashamed for what he had done. " I can try and replace the record, I just- don’t know how," Ryo admitted in an attempt to break the thick layer of ice between them.

There was a part of him that wanted to scram. Just up and skitter away where no one could find him. If only he could. It would be too easy though, wouldn't it? Besides, Ryo deserved better. Hells, Gracie deserved better. What kind of man was he if he couldn't acknowledge the corn with his own kin?

Not a ********' good one, that was for sure.

The apology from Ryo just made Clint bristle further in a way he was at sea to explain. Letting out a long breath from his nose, he shook his head. "You ain't gotta apologize," Because it was Clint who had ******** up way bigger. "I just don't want either of us getting bit. Dandy gets pissy when she wants alone time." It was the understatement of the century. The filly was temperamental at best, but she was his and he wasn't looking to change her. Something he was sure that Ryo could understand as his eyes skittered to Bubby.

"Sure, sounds as good as anywhere." He was doing his damnedest as he followed Ryo out of the stables to sound nonchalant. Honestly? He was also trying to look nonchalant. Whether or not it was working was up for debate. Maybe not with him. Anyone else would be a better judge of if he was succeeding or not.

The silence that hung in the air between them suggested he maybe wasn't being as successful as he would have liked. The circumstances of their family had drawn the brothers together. Who else was left to turn to when mom and dad barely seemed to care? Or if they did care it was entirely for selfish reasons. Looking good here, covering their own asses there. Having been introduced to their parents callous attitudes early might have been half of the reason Clint was so attached to Harue and Ryo. Making it all the harder to deal with the thick tension that lay between them as they walked. Tension that was needling under Clint's skin and setting him on edge.

Being herded into Ryo's room, he watched Bubby go off with a servant in relative silence. The stupid part of his mind was trying to figure out how to hang fire just a little bit longer. But Ryo broke the silence between them, offering to replace the record. Maybe it was the tightrope between them. Maybe it was the way his brother insisted on harping on the same thing. Whatever it was, a laugh bubbled out of Clint. A genuine, deep laugh that had him nearly doubling over.

"That's so like you." It wasn't said with malice. In fact, there was an affection to the tone Clint took as he rubbed his palm into his eye to rub the tears that had sprung up from his laughter. "I'll figure out where I can replace it, even if I need to send out to home." The word home was said with an unintentional sneer. The palace had never felt like home. Nor had they really ever done a whole lot to help him out over the years. But if he had access to them now as an emissary for their country or some s**t? He was damn well going to abuse it.

Flopping down on the corner of Ryo's bed in a wide-legged sit, Clint brought his hands together to press the tips of his fingers together. Thank the gods neither of them had Grace's power. How much more awkward would this be if one of them did? "Listen, I can tell somethin's eatin' ya. But I gotta tell you something before I chicken out like a piece of s**t. So here's the deal, I'll tell you mine and you can tell me yours. Good?"

He didn't wait for confirmation.

"Listen, I ******** up. I kissed Gra-Altagracia." His hands came up, rubbing down his face on either side of his nose while still holding his fingers together. "More than once, honestly. I know you ain't in love with her, but I shouldn't have done it in the first place. She's still you're finance. More importantly-" Clint's eyes flicked up to catch his brother's in his stare as his voice grew harder, angrier. "She didn't know why you two were engaged. Her parents are using her just as much as they are using you."

"Ryo" "Bubby"
Relief washed over him as Ryo’s brother took the record with no disgust in his tone. Was it like Ryo to return something in worse condition than it was found in originally? He had a habit of loving his items to death, but maybe Clint knew that risk when he lent him the items. With him being so willing to let this slide, the prince wondered what Clint would have to say about the rest of his misadventures. A part of him was curious if his brother would actually be proud of him for some regard for being able to make a friend, but considering the ending of both stories, Ryo feared that reaction far more.

Clint was quick to make himself comfortable, sitting on the edge of Ryo’s bed, and Ryo followed suit, sitting on the other side of the bed and listening to his brother. " Is it that obvious?" Ryo laughed, hopeful the record might distract him enough not to notice the true issue he wanted to speak to him about. But something was holding Clint back as well. But his brother was much braver than he was, offering to share his confession first as Ryo sat back to think about how to word his response, nodding to his brother’s offer.

"Listen, I ******** up. I kissed Gra-Altagracia."

Ryo’s jaw dropped in response. Not in a million years could he imagine the two getting along to such a degree. While he knew that Altagracia didn’t have any positive feelings towards him, it still felt like a betrayal to some degree. The fact that it had occurred multiple times without anyone informing him made him feel like an idiot. Especially since he was supposed to be marrying this woman in a month’s time.

But that wasn’t all the man had to say. Revealing that his fiancée had no idea about the arrangement her parents had concocted. " I-i don’t know what to say." If she didn’t know about her parents’ plans to gain power, then all the resentment and loathing he held towards her were completely meaningless. " How could she not have known? I could have sworn." His voice was a mere whisper as he couldn’t bear to think about how cruel he had been to this woman for the past decade for something that was never her fault.

Looking at his brother for any answers, he could sense the man’s anger steaming, " Is it possible he has feelings for her?" He thought about it before he touched on the subject of the two locking lips. " It doesn’t change anything. I still have to marry her." He sighed, putting his hands over his eyes, dreading the realization of their now very complicated situation. " It would appear we are all just pawns in her parents’ game. No way of escaping this one." As tough as it was to say, it had to be said if she was supposed to be queen, it didn’t matter how Ryo felt about the matter. Even if she didn't love him and he had feelings for someone else, none of that mattered.

The way that Ryo accepted it without question felt awful. There were no questions, no accusations, no rage. If he’d up and hit Clint at least it all would have felt a little more even. Like, yeah, he’d been a little shocked. But that had seemed to be the extent of Ryo’s reaction as his brother joined him sitting on the bed. It was one of the things about his brother that both confused him and that he admired. Ryo was far better able to school his emotions. Maybe it was the nature of his powers that made it so. Or that fancy a** royal training he’d done to prepare for taking over the throne.

Meanwhile Clint was over here boiling over it seven ways to Sunday and it was obvious just from the look on his face or the tone of his voice. Sometimes he wished he had an ounce of Ryo’s composure. Setting the record down on the bed next to them, his hands raked up, pushing his hat until he resigned to take it off with one hand and let the fingers of the other thread through his hair. ”No, she thought you were behind it, pushing for the two of you to be together for some reason. Made it real weird that you never treated her too kindly.” A noise of amusement halfway between a laugh and a scoff tumbled out of the cowboy as he looked sideways at his brother.

”You actually don’t still have to marry her, you know that right?” There was a strange sort of poetic… something that he was here sitting next to a broken record all while sounding like one. The hand that had mussed his hair dropped down, his gaze following it as he fiddled with the brim of his hat. This was a lost cause and he knew it. Clint had been making the same argument to Ryo since he could remember and it had never changed his mind before. The words still tumbled clumsily out of his mouth anyway. ”Mom ******** up all on her own and it ain’t your job to fix it for her.” On a chance, Clint looked up to Ryo. Blue eyes meeting grey. ”Or any of us, really.” You already have enough to deal with. The final sentiment he left unspoken, the way he always did.

It felt like a lost cause. It always did. But he didn’t want this to be the note they ended on. Ryo had come to him first, wanting to talk about something. He’d said his piece and, for now at least, he was ready to leave it for Ryo to consider. Or, more likely, not. Clint’s hand balled into a fist, knocking against the hand still dangling his hat down between his legs. He’d offered up the meat, time for the potatoes. ”You came lookin’ for me, so I reckon it’s your turn to spill your guts, brother.” His voice was softer now, less sure of himself. Ryo asked for his opinion often enough, but he rarely felt qualified to give it. What did he know compared to the future king? Clint was little better than some country hick. Hell, if it weren’t for the blood running through his veins, he would be a country hick. ”I’ll help you best I’m able, though if it’s hoity toity s**t I’m probably not your guy.” Letting a grin break through, he knew his brother would see the joke for what it was. Something to lighten the mood.

"Ryo" "Bubby"
Finding out your bride-to-be is cheating on you would normally enrage a person, but Ryo felt a sense of relief. There was even a sick part of his brain hoping his brother would get the woman pregnant so he wouldn’t have to after their nuptials. But that was asking for too much. The fact that his brother was comfortable enough to talk to him about something like this was enough for Ryo to feel guilty for thinking he might be able to use it to his advantage somehow.

A small amount of sadness filled him in thinking that Altagracia had thought this was his doing all along. Then he remembered he was guilty of thinking the same thing. While in reality, they were both pawns being played with. Ryo hoped that Clint hadn’t told her the reason why the crown prince agreed to the arrangement. Given his attitude towards her and utter lack of assumption, it wouldn’t be unbelievable that his parents had wanted the arrangement to cure his sexual afflictions. Not that he had that issue. But he preferred her thinking that over her knowing their mother was a murderer.

As if he were stuck on repeat, Clint mumbled the same argument that Ryo had over and over. While he understood why his brother had issues with their mother, Ryo saw her as a helpless victim of their abusive father. " I think you know that still isn’t an option. I can’t betray Mom. I promised her." He looked to the man fiddling with his hat, knowing he had heard all of Ryo’s objections as well. If he fell back on their deal, what kind of man did that make him? Ryo didn’t want to find out.

Then they just returned to silence, as they often did when they had this disagreement. One of the few things they couldn’t compromise on. Ryo wished he could see things the way Clint did, but it was impossible for him to do so when he was raised to think so logically. There was never time for feelings. That was why he had come to Clint to begin with; the sudden feelings rising to the surface, Ryo was scared about the waves crashing down on them. There had to be a way to continue pushing them down, but Ryo was struggling to come up with ideas.

A chuckle found its way out as Clint found his way to turn that conversation back onto him. His manner of speaking always made Ryo smile, and how blunt he could be always managed to shock him. " I don’t think this will help my argument. It might help support yours. But I need your help with feelings." Unable to not sound disgusted with himself at the last word. Very few women had caught his eye before Utopia, and now he found himself unable to stop thinking about the relationships he had built here. Even if they didn’t feel the same way about him, Ryo couldn’t help himself.

With a smile and a large sigh, Ryo looked to his brother for guidance, " Even though I don’t care if Altagracia remains faithful. It’s only fair that I am faithful to her. Especially with everything you told me today." Biting his lip, he prepared to finally confess his sins for the first time, " But I fear I have already been unfaithful. Not with the flesh." Thinking about his meetings with Nerys and Izzie separately. The sparks from the redhead versus the chills the blue-haired beauty gave him that he could feel in his bones, " But in here." Ryo spoke, sheepishly pointing at his heart.

His eyes grew dark, frustration making his jaw tick. It was an effort keeping his mouth shut. Sometimes it was easy to forget how much time they had spent apart, but in these moments the rift and misunderstandings between them seemed wide. The second they were back together they ran their mouths until they were caught back up to the point that it was like Clint had never been sent away at all.

No. That wasn't right.

Calling it being sent away was so much tamer than what it actually was. His parents had sold him for shallow loyalty from a faction that had such a small amount of skin in the game that they'd ended up treating Clint like one of their own. Meanwhile he'd had to sit there as a child and question why. It was the damnable question that followed him around, apparently a very literal shadow lurking with him if Altagracia was to be believed.

The fact that Ryo was so willing to call their mother a victim? It beyond Clint's ability to grasp his feelings on the matter. It was a boiling mix of rage, disappointment, and something else - something tender that ached within him. This was a woman who had robbed him of the childhood he was born into. It would not have surprised Clint if their father was the driving force behind his sale, but in all of those years his mother had also never written him. The only letters that he'd ever received were from Ryo. Occasionally Harue would send one, but she rarely needed to with her ability.

Tamping down that feeling, he waited to see what Ryo had wanted to talk to him about. His brother's problem was ironic. In just the way that made it amusing. Bringing a hand up, Clint scrubbed it over his face before rubbing it over his mouth and grasping his chin. A dark chuckle hung in his throat. One that he was trying not to let out, but failing miserably. His laugh was seeping through his fingers.

"Do ya want me to be honest?" The question came with his hand dropping back down into his lap. On one hand, Clint knew the answer. On the other it was hard to imagine this was a problem. "You can't cheat on s**t. Y'all ain't in a real relationship Ryo. Neither of you have tried to get to know each other because you're so ********' convinced the other is out to screw the other over. It's no wonder you get out of the ivory tower of the palace back home and you find someone you can have a better connection with than her."

Waving a hand, he made a vague gesture to the school around them. As if waving would offer him more evidence than he already had. "No offense. But we're in this hoity toity a** school surrounded by more women who aren't related to you than you've seen in your lifetime. I'd be more surprised you didn't find anyone you could be interested in." Making a fist, he pounded his free hand into the hand still holding the brim of his hat. Blowing out a long breath, Clint met Ryo's gray eyes.

"You literally just leveled the most unfair deal to yourself by saying Grace could cheat but you can't. For what? Some botched a** deal her parents are pushing against you so they don't out our mom as a murderer? Would you find that s**t fair if I was in your shoes?"

Maybe, just maybe, if he could spin this another way Ryo would get his head out of his a** and realize what he was saying.
