The recent storms had been both inconvenient and annoying for one Captain Staurolite. Extra shifts at the hospital had taken a toll on his agent activities, if only because people seemed to be calling out far more often than usual. He tried not to pay attention to the excuses people were making; he had a feeling at least eighty percent of the time the reasons were valid, and if people had the hours, who was he to dictate how they decided to use them?

It annoyed the ever living daylights out of him, but he did his best to take the high road in his civilian life.

As an agent?

Fat chance.

The captain was staring off to his left side, the obnoxiously bright sensation of an Order aura having manifested not too far away. He curled his lip at the sensation and did his best to keep the distaste off of his face, which…he mostly succeeded. His mood was a bit lighter today given he had the night off, and he could get back to a job he enjoyed far more than his day job. And he was eager to get some work done. Tilting his head at the approaching signature, he thought for a moment that he could probably teleport right to them, whoever it was–they seemed about equal in rank and there was only one of them so if anything it’d be an even match–but as they were making their way toward him...why waste the energy?

He had his crossbow at the ready as he lurked within the shadows of a cluster of trees, watching curiously as the Squire stepped within range of his weapon.

"Why are you so into being bounced," Nis murmured to the little wisp that hovered around her hand. Of course, she was obligingly bouncing it in her hand, but it was cute in its weird way and it was a harmless way to pass the time as she patrolled. But when she felt a faint brush of Chaos, she frowned and moved her hand to transfer the wisp to her shoulder. She wasn't sure how much it knew or understood, never had been sure, really. But she rather thought that it could sense something as it went still and stuck close.

Once the aura felt as if it was literally in her face, she paused and scanned the area. Trees, shadows. It would be a perfect ambush if whoever it was wanted.

"Time to go home, little one," she whispered to the wisp, breathing a little easier as it bounced once in the air before vanishing into the darkness. It was one less thing to worry about. Then, with a breath, she summoned her weapon to hand and twirled it baton-like between her fingers.

"I know you're there," she called out in a perfectly neutral voice. "Let's not demean ourselves by pretending either of us is some sort of master of stealth. Our very natures won't let that happen, after all."

She had her suspicions as to where the officer was hiding. And felt that this was probably not going to end up as a pleasant chat. People willing to reach out to the other side and talk didn't hide. So, though she might look non-chalant, her eyes were cutting from side to side trying to determine where the attack would come and how it would manifest.

Stauolite smirked when the Squire called out to him. He wouldn’t bite today, at least not yet; he wasn’t in much of a giving mood. Maybe it was because of having to be away for so long and being behind on his quota? Or because he was looking for a bit of stress relief because of his day job? Regardless of the reason, he didn’t move. Rather, he kept his sights on the Squire (on her legs, specifically) and, when the opportunity presented itself, he let loose one of his bolts before immediately teleporting to stand in front of her, well out of arm's reach, in hopes that it would prevent her from dodging.

He hadn’t expected to look up when he came face to face with her, but he tried not to let the surprise show on his face.

“Got me.”

Captain — Can fire an ethereal bolt every 40 seconds, up to 15 feet. When hit, it causes the sensation of sharp pain that pulses from the injury for 15 seconds. Being hit by the ethereal bolt can cause blunt force damage (including light or heavy bruising, up to broken bones or lacerations at player discretion).

To her credit, Nis managed not to scream as something rocketed into her leg, just above her knee. But she stumbled back slightly, that couldn't be helped. Nor could the tears of pain that ran from her eyes. Still, she didn't scream as pain pulsed through her.

And she was particularly proud of that fact when the officer, a rather little man, appeared rather suddenly in front of her.

"Ah yes," she heard herself saying, voice distant and cool, "you lot teleport, don't you. Clever, I'll admit, but I hope you won't be too offended by the lack of praise for being a sneaky little b*****d."

The pain was lessening ever so slightly, but she still felt rooted in place, afraid to move too much just in case more pain erupted. Still, that didn't stop her from looking the officer up and down and noting the wrist mounted crossbow. Nasty little weapon for a nasty little man, she thought. But now she had a better idea of what she was dealing with.

And an idea of just how slim her chances could be if he took potshots at her again. Or went for her knees. The spot just above the one already felt swollen and bruised. Really, she thought, it was too bad he was just out of reach. She would have loved to have caught him by the ear and slapped the expression off of his face.

The Captain considered for a moment before he broke out a wide smile. “Hm. Alright, well keep the praise. That wasn’t very nice of me, was it?” he said, wrinkling his nose in an almost patronizing way. He wasn’t going to apologize, and in fact felt a bit accomplished seeing that his little ploy seemed to have worked?

“But hey, good news for you,” he said, taking a tentative step forward. “All my cards are on the table, and for all I know you could have some kind of ace up your sleeve.” Another step, though this time he positioned his crossbow as if he was readying to take another shot at her. Not that he could, not yet at least, but she didn’t need to know that.

“Look, I’m just in a rush for my quota. If you stand still, I’ll just take a little bit of energy and be on my merry way.” His tone was perfectly casual, as though he hadn’t just attacked her and was actually just having a conversation about buying fruit at the market. “You’ll barely feel anything at your energy level and I won’t knock you out, I promise.”

And then he smiled just a bit wider before asking. “What do you say?”

Eyes narrowing at the sheer smugness and gall of the officer, Nis found that she really really wanted to slap him now. But given he was still out of reach and very pointedly aiming his crossbow at her, she felt it wisest to remain as impassive as possible.

“Don’t have sleeves, little man,” she drawled laconically even as instinct called up her aspect, coating her body in shimmering light. The fact that he was so calmly and reasonably suggesting that she simply hold still and let him siphon from her was disgusting. That he saw nothing wrong with his idea, to her, was telling.

He was still out of reach, so she chose to take a moment to pointedly ignore him, eyes sliding off of him in disdain as she studied the leg that had been hit. No blood, no ragged, torn holes. Just some swelling and a growing bruise. A careful test showed that the leg could still bear weight, though it wouldn’t be fun or pleasant. Right. She had a better idea of what she had to work with now.

All she needed was for him to get a little closer. Humming a little to herself, she slid her eyes back up and locked on the officer. Arching an eyebrow, the rest of her face remained impassive. The officer’s widening smile made her teeth grind together as she kept iron control over her own expression. Finally, after a moment, she tossed her head and resumed slowly twirling her stick like a baton. Then, she allowed another silent moment to pass before she smiled coldly, though it was less a smile and far more a baring of teeth. If she wanted him to move in closer, she’d have to bait him.

“Get bent, runt.”

He watched her stand almost stock still where she was, curious what her take on his proposal might be. It occurred to him that, when she took her eyes off of him, she might have been surveying her immediate area, looking for some way to gain the upper hand in this encounter. Thankfully he had an easy escape in his back pocket, but he didn’t want to have to go that route.

It also occurred to him that he should probably learn how to fight properly at some point, though…

With his weapon, it was still a bit hard to convince himself to put in the effort. Plus training usually meant some kind of physical evidence. How exactly would he explain random cuts and bruises to Hannah? That he decided he wanted to learn how to fight, just completely out of nowhere?

The captain dismissed the thought and absently took another step closer in anticipation of her agreement.

“Look–”

He curled his lip.

“Guess we’ll do this the harder way,” he sighed before teleporting just behind her.

It was too close, though, because the instant he came back into view, rather than a regular person she was suddenly shining for some reason or another. But even as he bit back the shot of pain in his eyes he moved to tackle her…and instantly regretted his decision the second he came into contact with her.

He'll be dazed from the burn-y pain whether she goes down with the tackle or manages to get away from the full impact of it, so have at him! o/

She should have expected the teleporting. She should have realized he'd use his nasty little tricks the moment she defied him. But she didn't and when he vanished and reappeared behind her, trying to tackle, she couldn't help the tiny yelp she made.

But his immediate recoil from her was satisfying in the extreme and through scrabbling, she was able to get out of his grip. Turning, she glared venomously at the somewhat dazed officer. She could have taken the opportunity to run. Probably should have. But pride and disgust banded together in her brain and instead, she took the chance to grab for the arm with the crossbow attached, intending to seize, twist and if she was very lucky indeed, break his wrist. She'd been watching self defense videos on the internet and had thought them brilliant.

And well, if that didn't work, she still had her aspect and she'd go Harry Potter Takes Down Quirrel on him.

He was dazed and in pain, but not completely immobile. The second she grabbed for his wrist he did his best to pull his arm in, using the rest of his body to put some kind of space between her and his weapon. Of course, this resulted in even more pain wherever he had made contact with her, and he let out a barely controlled cry of agony at the burning sensation that was starting to spead across his bdoy, but he would rather suffer that than lose his weapon to her.

Not that she could use it, but it was a point of pride.

There was little strength in any of his movements, but he seemed to be scrambling and flailing about trying to shove her away. “And I’m the one all of you say has ‘dirty tricks’ up my sleeve,” he hissed, still unable to fully focus. At least not enough to comfortably teleport out of reach.

”Actually sugar dumpling, all I said was I didn’t have sleeves. And correct me if I’m wrong, but I do believe that firing a ******** crossbow at someone for no damn good reason one hundred percent counts as a dirty trick.”

Nis adopted her sweetest, and consequently most venomous, tone as she crinkled her nose into a smile. She wouldn’t delude herself into thinking she had anything like the upper hand in this fracas, but at least now her odds were a bit better. And maybe she hadn’t managed to break his dang weapon bearing arm, but she could at least hurt him and keep him distracted.

It was something and she’d happily take it.

And she’d have been a fool to not follow up on her own assault. So, she did. Keeping as close to the officer as possible and making random snatches and grabs for him would keep him distracted and hopefully convince him that she wasn’t worth the trouble. One flailing arm came into reach and she seized for it, hoping to latch on and use it as leverage to do… well. To do something. She’d aim him at one of the tree he’d hidden behind and hope that he’d hit with enough force to drive the air out of his lungs for a few seconds. She even supposed that if worse came to worse, she could be the absolute rudest and go straight for the crotch-shot. It wasn’t her go to idea, but she’d hold it in reserve for now.

”It wasn’t for no reason,” he spat back, “I told you. I have a quota to meet!”

He was justified in his need to try and subdue someone to drain them of a little bit of their energy. Just a little bit! He already promised he wasn’t going to take so much that she would pass out. He just needed some! And powered folks always had more to give than civilians.

It was even safer, wasn’t it?!

Unfortunately in his attempt to keep her at a distance, the damned Squire managed to latch onto his one of his arms, and before he realized it he was being weaponized and made into a human club. She aimed for a tree and didn’t miss, successfully knocking the wind completely out of him.

The captain crumpled to the ground seconds after impact, pain reverberating throughout his entire body.

The only good that came of it, though, was he was able to focus on that pain, and that pain alone. The panic and frustration of his failure disappeared into the background, along with the Squire, and after another second the Captain was out of sight.

Back to the Castle, specifically to the Medical Bay, because it was the safest place when he was injured.

He couldn’t show up at home like this, after all.

A quota,” Nis hissed, “is no damn reason to actively inflict harm on someone via sneak attack!”

Self defense though, she thought, only slightly guiltily, was a perfectly valid reason to wail the living hell on someone. And he’d hurt her first. They could have just had a little chat, had their differences of opinion and each gone on their way. But noooo! ******** had to fool around and find out.

Even fueled by her own anger and fright, Nis was shocked to see how easily the officer was yeeted… yote? into the tree. The sound he made on impact was almost enough to make Nis feel badly for tossing him in the first place. Almost. She watched him crumple and lay there for a moment and felt her stomach thump. Another moment passed and she began to move towards him, overcome by a need to check and make sure he was actually breathing. Only for him to quite suddenly vanish from where he’d lain.

Tensing, Nis waited, fully expecting another attack. Only… none came. She let another moment pass. Then another. Finally, she was convinced that she’d emerged the victor in this little altercation and the officer had beaten a retreat. Letting the breath she’d been half holding out in a noisy sigh, the squire sagged a little in sheer exhaustion.

“Oh god damn,” she muttered to herself as she began to head for home. “******** this noise, I’m out.”

The world could do without her attempts at further stewardship tonight. All she wanted was a hot bath and an ice pack for the spreading bruise on her leg. And wine. Wine sounded so goddamn good right now.
