This RP happens the evening of Feb. 22nd, the night after The Anchor In The Storm.

Getting out of the house at all proved to be a challenge tonight. Murikabushi had expected that, honestly.

The fact that Kiyoshi had come home last night, immediately buried his face in Cersei’s fuzzy side, and laid in bed, eerily silent, for several hours had been worrisome enough for Yuki, Elior, Kyoya, and their friends-and-housemates. Getting him to engage with people again had taken Yuki threatening to break the “Stay away from the family as much as possible, it might not be safe for them or you to have too much contact yet, Faustite—y’know, the Faustite who is literally on fire?—he knows your old civilian name, remember that” rule to bring Obaasan down to the house in the middle of the night. Honestly, Murikabushi didn’t really blame them for having their misgivings about letting him go out on his own tonight.

He doubly understood their misgivings about letting him go out on his own tonight when he’d been open with them about his intentions. On paper, Murikabushi going to find some members of the Dark Mirror Court was fair cause for concern. Yuki in particular hadn’t liked the idea, no matter how much Kiyoshi had tried to reassure him that Remarque wouldn’t force somebody into the Court if they didn’t want to be there. Ultimately, Yuki had only relented because: 1. the threat looming over everyone on Earth was too big, and the Court did deserve to know in advance; and 2. Elior had backed Kiyoshi up, agreeing that he would come home, still Kiyoshi, because Remarque would never force anyone into the Court like that.

Hitting the town, Murikabushi couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. More than once as he searched for one of his former comrades in the Court—Bélénos or Sappho would have worked as well, if Muri couldn’t find Hybris or Lete—Murikabushi glanced back over his shoulder. Nobody turned up following him. But that didn’t make the feeling go away. Better to focus on searching for a Dark Mirror aura, which was already a challenge on a good day.

When Murikabushi’s aura senses finally picked up on that particular feeling of Dark Mirror Chaos, less aggressive than the Negaverse’s flavor thereof, he frowned at the direction it took him in. A cemetery, of all places. Probably not a bad bet, and from the feel of the other aura, if he didn’t find someone helpful, he could protect himself well enough. As he climbed up the ominous fence and wove his way through the headstones, Murikabushi tried to think of anyone he knew offhand who might’ve been hanging around in a cemetery. Probably not Lete, not easy enough for her to sit on a picnic table and ******** around while Mirrorwraiths did all the work. Not Acubens, she had little ones to chase after. Sappho and Bélénos probably would’ve preferred to hunt for energy somewhere more lively, where they’d be noticed less easily.

The aura led Murikabushi to one of the cemetery’s mausoleums—and he heaved a sigh of relief, hearing the voice attached to it. A glass skylight allowed the moonlight to illuminate the figure of exactly the useless pretty boy twink he’d been looking for. Sleeves and skirts swishing with purpose, Murikabushi slunk in to join Hybris, and for a moment, he allowed Hybris to continue feeling his oats all over this place of people’s eternal rest, acting out what sure sounded like some Sheridan Le Fanu vampire fantasy (or at least, a vampire fantasy that Murikabushi could not immediately clock as Anne Rice, Dracula, Octavia Butler, or Tananarive Due, and the dialogue sounded too antiquated for most of the modern options). Muri needed that hot second to reach into his subspace anyway.

“Hey, queen,” he said easily, during a moment when Hybris needed to breathe, gently drumming his fingertips along the side of a plastic bottle. “Good to see you’re up to your usual and staying out of trouble.” A statue stood nearby where Hybris had been swooning, and Murikabushi moved to sit himself on its pedestal. “I come bearing a bribe.”

Specifically, a bottle of Hybris’s favorite shampoo. Murikabushi might have forgotten what his friend’s name was as a civilian—which made sense for him to forget, best not to risk Hybris’s safety when he was just a little guy—but he did still recall Hybris’s hair-care products.

“Well, her funeral is over, I hope, and her hymn sung; and our ears shan’t be tortured with that discord and jargon. It has made me nervous. Sit down here, beside me; sit close; hold my hand; press it hard—hard—harder.” Letting his voice, soft with Carmilla's fear and longing, trail off, Hybris paused to smile charmingly as the member of Order that had approached. The smile spread into a boyish grin when he saw it was his Big Bro.

Bending down to accept the offered gift, his eyes fluttered briefly seeing that it was something that he liked, and that Murikabushi remembered he liked. It was, in a small way, a sign of the acceptance and care the older man still held for him. Invaluable and irreplaceable, even with the palette swap. "There's a shortage, you know. It's becoming harder to get." Hybris looked at the bottle for a moment longer before squirrelling it away in his space.

"Thank you, I hope this doesn't mean you want me to go do something horrible." It was so unlikely as to be a joke, given that Muri knew sending Hybris into something horrible meant having to heroically carry him away from something horrible.

“Yeah, well, I have my ways of finding things even when it gets difficult,” Murikabushi said, knowing that he was in the presence of a fellow Drama Queen™️, who would appreciate and fully enable him in some certain Antics. The “ways” in question were not actually very complicated or secret to most of Muri’s Order friends. In point of fact, they were named Leandro Esparza, who might have primarily been the King of Skin Care Routines, but did certainly know his way around all the other ways to treat oneself. Murikabushi wouldn’t out that to Hybris, for Leandro’s sake, but he’d still thank his lucky stars for having such a friend.

“Anyway, all I need you to do is make a call on your compact,” Murikabushi went on, getting to the point because the gravity of the situation didn’t allow for too much wasted time. “It may turn into a few compact calls, ultimately, if our guest of honor doesn’t show up? But……” He sighed, nudging his bangs off of his face and tucking them behind his ear. “Some weird, space s**t happened during that freak lightning storm last night. I’ll spill everything, but first, I want Remarque here, if he’ll come? It’s gonna be dangerous for everybody, and the Court needs to know about it.”

I'm thinking one more tag from Hybris, then Rem can make an entrance?

"Oh..." Hybris was both interested in knowing all about what was happening and also wondering if it was time to take a long vacation from Destiny City. Big Bro skipping to the point was a pretty strong sign that this was all very serious in what was probably a very unpleasant way. He didn't even make any cute references? Not even an ounce of sass to be had? He leaned down to give Murikabushi a close look, looking for hints of tension and tired vibes in the other senshi's typically stamped look.

"Well, that sounds important," he offered mildly, straightening to pull out his compact. Focusing on Prince Remarque, he intoned, "Mirror Daddy, Mirror Daddy, most handsome of all. Won't you please come when I call." And then, when the prince didn't immediately show up in a display of sparkles and diamonds, added, "To the Blake Street Cemetery, the south east mausoleum with all the angels, Murikabushi has information regarding something dangerous about that storm last night."

Once he finished, he looked over at Muri with an expectant expression. I did the thing! You should praise me right?

Hybris’s antics did nothing to change the seriousness of the situation, but all the same, listening to the way he called Remarque on the compact made Murikabushi smile. Even got him to laugh a little. “Thank you for that, O Senshi of Eggplants,” he said earnestly, knowing that Hybris was, in fact, not the senshi of eggplants—or aubergines, or whatever the ******** Vanya’s pretentious space-roommate insisted on calling them—but willing to play along with his ongoing ruse anyway because Hybris enjoyed it. “Very effective call, and……not that it’s the main point right now? But just so you know, I’m glad that we’re friends.”

There was a slight delay between when Hybris messaged Remarque and when Remarque actually got back about it, maybe because it took him half a minute to finish sighing before he could respond. He sent back a very brief, “On it,” and wasted no time following through.

With a decent idea of the city’s layout, and a surplus of mirror shortcuts, it didn’t take Remarque long to arrive. He had come from Mirrorspace but shifted back into his Eternal Senshi form before returning to Destiny City. He didn’t want to draw too much attention.

Murikabushi brought enough of his own.

It wasn’t difficult to find the two Senshi; Hybris had given more direction than he was used to receiving, and it wasn’t like either of them could hide their energy signatures. They knew of his presence as much as he knew of theirs.

Upon arrival, he greeted Hybris by name but also gave him a brief, exasperated look. He was too used to antics of the sort to make much of a fuss about the message. He didn’t want to encourage Murikabushi to get caught on a tangent, so the less distractions, the better. Murikabushi liked to talk, so Remarque would rather keep him on topic. Especially if this was something important.

“You look well, Murikabushi.” All things considered. Remarque didn’t ask if he was staying out of trouble because he was pretty sure Murikabushi couldn’t help himself.

He didn’t want to waste anyone’s time, not if this was as important and dangerous as had been implied. He didn't know how long they had before someone picked up on a cluster of energy signatures and tried to investigate, and he doubted Murikabushi wanted to go talk in Mirrorspace.

So, he got to the point. “What do you know about the storm?”

Murikabushi expected at least some kind of delay. Had Remarque not shown up at all, he’d also been prepared to just talk to Hybris and trust him with reaching out to the rest of the Court. But waiting patiently paid off in the form of the Dark Mirror Court’s resident Prince himself, and Murikabushi met Remarque’s arrival with a smile. Small and tired, but genuine.

“Same to you, Remarque,” he said easily and earnestly. “I hope it’s not just appearances. And I hope your family’s doing well, too.”

Murikabushi didn’t know much of anything beyond the fact that Remarque’s family existed and Remarque would have done anything to protect them. Still, Muri didn’t want anything bad happening to anybody’s families, as much as anyone could avoid that. Whatever anyone else with Order felt about Chaos—whether Dark Mirror Chaos, Nega Chaos, or just Chaos in general—the people with the Chaos factions were all just people. Not all of them were trying their best, but most of the people in the Court, in Murikabushi’s experience, were. None of them deserved to suffer, and neither did their families.

“Well, to start? Whatever was going on with the storm, a good ten people all got scooped out of town and taken to this……space-hexagon?” Briefly, Muri traced the outline of a hexagon in the air before the three of them with his fingertip……and then remembered he had something better he could show instead. Pulling out his senshi phone, he went on, “Six people from the Negaverse and four Order senshi. We found ourselves surrounded by these murals. They were magic. Ancient, as far as we could discern. And they had a fascinating story to tell.”

Was Murikabushi eliding a few pieces of the story? Yes, but considering he was mostly skimming over whatever had happened between the Negaverse operatives last night, he didn’t think much of it. Instead, with the mysterious message pulled up on his phone, he stood. Senshi phones needed to be in contact with their senshi to work, so rather than hand it over, Murikabushi shifted closer to Remarque and Hybris, trying to ensure that both of them could see the pictures. As he scrolled through them, he went slowly, lingering on each shot until he got a sense that Remarque and Hybris had seen enough.

“The murals moved when we were there for real,” Murikabushi explained. “I didn’t really see what all of them did? You’ll see the one I looked at in a sec. But the story between all of them indicated that there was this big, nasty serpent guy. Once upon a time, he used to manifest as horrible lightning storms and destroy entire worlds. One of the other Order senshi present? She’s a thousand-some-odd-year-old alien and her people had stories like that, destructive storms with monsters. So, some people made a prison—most likely the space-hexagon, judging from how everything in the murals lined up with everything there. Then, they bound him there with magic stakes.”

Finally, Murikabushi got to the picture of the fifth mural, the one he’d focused on so intently, with the picture of the serpent imprisoned. “When I stared at this one in person? The serpent in the mural kept ramming his head against the stakes keeping him bound. He seemed angry, which, honestly? Yeah. Of course he was. People had to stop him, but the anger on his part makes sense. And after a thousand some-odd tries, he got one of the stakes to crack. It lined up with the darkened circle on the hexagon’s floor. So, the attempts at escaping may have finally paid off for him.”

Murikabushi took a deep breath as he moved to the last picture. “Okay, this one’s funny, but I promise it’s not just a picture of a blank wall, okay?” Moving carefully, Murikabushi tilted his phone. Tried to shift it around so that Remarque and Hybris could see the great eye on the mural, and watch how it followed them. “While we were investigating? This wall turned into a giant image of an eye. It seemed connected to something alive.”

Expression sober and serious, Murikabushi looked up from his phone. He angled himself more toward Remarque, like he would’ve done on stage, trying to portray characters in conversation while still cheating toward the audience.

“Everything started falling apart after I touched the wall with the eye,” he said. “On the way to the exit, though, I picked up a stake like the ones in the murals, and……” Murikabushi shrugged, shaking his head. “I don’t know if our serpentine friend has already escaped and he’s coming for Earth now? I don’t know if we’re gonna have to lock him up again? I just know……this is big. And it’s dangerous. And the Court needs to know as much as Order and the Negaverse.”

He hesitated a moment, then added, “Whatever happens, I didn’t want you all to be the only people caught unprepared.”

The sweet affirmation drew out a pleased little smile from Hybris. Muri was a good friend to have He'd been rescued, carried, and fed enough times by the other senshi. Also defended, enabled, and regaled with Muri's babbling brook of conversation that gave generously of himself while demanding little of others. Case in point, he doubted that there would be anything asked in return for what was likely important information. He might even just be grateful that Remarque was willing to come and listen.

Tsk. His big brother of another color palette really needed to learn some selfishness.

The prince's response was fairly prompt, if not immediate, which Hybris chalked up to his prince being super professional, as always! Arrow Princess just was not on his level, and Faustite had the gall to just appear out of nowhere as if he wasn't incredibly big and scary to little mirror senshi just minding their own business. His prince was too busy doing mirror things to go around jumping out of alleyways or shooting people with arrows.

Remarque's exasperated look was met with one of profound satisfaction. Yes, this is what a leader should act like. Punctual. Appears when wanted. No violence, against Hybris specifically, necessary. He wasn't even mean or petty to Muri about leaving the Mirror.

As his friend talked about what sounded quite a big like alien abduction to visit an art gallery installation, Hybris responded with quiet ohhh's and ahh's, little gasps and the clutching of invisible pearls; all pitched to emphasize the story beats rather than disrupt. In other words, he acted the same was as he did when Muri gave him some piece of hot gossip or a story he was piecing together from his past life.

"Why didn't they abduct any mirror senshi?" He asked after the account had finished. "Does that means it likes us better?" Or worse. But why would anybody not prefer mirror senshi? Well, present company aside.

“Because we don’t get into enough trouble to draw anyone’s attention,” Remarque suggested to Hybris, but it wasn’t clear if he actually believed that, or if he was just trying to remind that there was a benefit to laying low.

His expression hadn’t changed much since Murikabushi first started speaking, but his mood had soured a bit as he started to process the information. They knew there were things out there in the universe. His first experience with any of this magical stuff had been out there, when he and fifty-some others were yanked out of Destiny City and thrown out on the Surrounding. He’d known a long time ago that you waste all that energy to build a magical barrier if you weren’t trying to keep things out, and he’d had a chance to see some of it first hand.

They knew a lot more about the universe back then than anyone seemed to know now.

Now, there were ten people, sent to some strange corner of the universe, and one was Murikabushi. Three other Senshi, including a thousand year old alien. Okay. Six from the Negaverse. Not a very big group but he was trying to file away who might have more information. Not that Murikabushi hadn’t given them a wealth of it, he’d just also admitted that there were some holes in his account, and Remarque wasn’t sure how easy it would be to find him again if they needed to swap updates.

“I don’t suppose there’s anything you can do to get us a copy of those pictures, can you? I don’t know if Mirrorspace can help but,” he shrugged. Wasn’t like he wasn’t going to try anyway. There were plenty of Dark Mirror Senshi who probably would’ve liked to go exploring with him.

Ah, Murikabushi was really missing out.

“I can’t say I’ve got much I can share right now that might be of any use. I don’t get to spend a lot of time in space. I was on the Surrounding for a bit, a while back. You might want to ask around about that and see if anyone up there’s picked up on something. Can’t really speak as an authority, but the last time I was up there they were dealing with giant space monsters, too. Looked like a whale, back then. Of course, I don’t think it was big enough to destroy a whole world. If it or any others ever came back, I didn’t hear about it. But I’m not surprised to hear that there’s more out there. How big’s that stake you found?”

“Remarque’s right,” Murikabushi agreed in response to Hybris’s question. “You guys are generally better at keeping a lower profile. The problem with that is, you also get left out of the loop when something is happening that might very likely hurt you, too.”

However, listening to Remarque was more constructive—and at the moment, more important on the whole—than listening to Hybris. Some other night, when there wasn’t any major existential danger hovering over everyone’s heads, Murikabushi would make it up to his friend by letting Hybris ramble about whatever he wanted, for as long as he wanted. Run a new bit he’d been rehearsing by Murikabushi for feedback, maybe. Whatever suited him best at that time.

At this time, though, Remarque had a lot to offer for someone who allegedly didn’t have a lot to offer. Murikabushi took his notes on it in the text messages app on his senshi phone, typing them in a group message with Kerberos and Elsa (not much had previously been sent in said group message, but both of them, Murikabushi felt, deserved to know about what was going on with this conversation).

texts sent to Kerberos and Elsa
Talking with Remarque & Hybris. Rem says to look into something called “The Surrounding”?

I’ve never heard of it, have either of you?

He says he was up there at some point and it had space whales like Star Trek IV

(He did not compare it to Star Trek IV, that’s all on me)

Still, space-whales. Whales in space. Question mark?
🌌🐳

Blossom, how did your trip to the celestial theatre go btw?

At Remarque’s question about the stake-spike-whatever, though, Murikabushi replied, “I mean, I haven’t exactly measured it, but—hang on.” A quick second to tuck his phone away, and then Murikabushi pulled the spike out of his subspace. He held it right out in the open for Remarque and Hybris to see.

“It was really weird when we found it, too,” Murikabushi said, partly thinking out loud but also relaying the anecdote in case either Remarque or Hybris had any ideas. “The friend I was with, he’s been an Eternal for something like ten years. He’s got the sparkly glowy marks of a Transcended senshi. I assumed ‘Oh, it’s obviously for him. He’s worked his a** off, he deserves it.’ But then Kerberos couldn’t touch it; his hand phased right through. I’ve shown it to a couple friends since and they can touch it now, though. Like me picking it up did something to it?”

Which didn’t make a damn bit of sense when Kerberos had literally been right there, but that wasn’t the point.

“As for getting you guys copies of the pictures……” Murikabushi shrugged, shaking his head in a way that conveyed exactly how little he knew. “I don’t know if sending anything to your compacts from my phone would work. And I don’t know if any of our Mauvians would help. Some of them are extremely hostile to anybody who isn’t Order.” Specifically, Muri thought of one furball who’d kicked him in the head once, but for whom Muri would still buy snacks anyway. “And look, regardless of my acrimonious parting with Mirrorspace, if you think it can help, I’m willing to go back and try.”

Murikabushi may not have trusted Mirrorspace worth a damn. But he did, on the whole, trust Remarque. And if they could copy the photos for the Court somehow, maybe someone among their ranks might notice something that no one else had.

Quote:
The Mule’s official description of the Mysterious Spikes describes them as about two feet long. “They appear to be a dark, metallic grey with a noticeably greenish tint. A quarter of the spike was forged into a hilt, separated by an oddly long cross guard. Mounted atop each spike is a single, circular orb. It is black in color, but when peering deeply, the light catches it and gives the appearance of a small universe trapped inside.”

For someone with a generally excellent sense of preservation, Hybris couldn't help but immediately wonder what he (and Lete) could do to get in a little bit of trouble, just to be brats about it. Like it would be nice, of course, to get praise from Remarque for being so smart and lowkey, but also: it would be really fun to get a lecture for being horrible and making horrible choices that somebody else had to clean up. (The two of the Top 5 Most Likely People To Clean Up After Hybris & Lete standing right in front of him.)

Thinking of Lete, he'd have have to tell her all about how their prince went into space to fight space whales. And also that Murikabushi got handed some kind of Excalibur weapons. She'll be SO impressed and jealous!

"Can I just take a picture of your phone screen? Or does the hater magic in your Order phone put a big hater condo-" a cough, and then more primly, "...a protective filter over it?"

“Do you mind if I try?” Remarque asked, holding out his hand for the spike. He didn’t try to take it from Murikabushi, and something about the way he held his hand out didn’t seem particularly demanding. It was a request, not an expectation.

He’d met Kerberos, he knew of his bioluminescent bunnies. He didn’t seem like much trouble. One of these days, he was supposed to take Remarque up to his Homeworld. It wasn’t sounding like that was going to be any time soon.

“I’m something of an expert when it comes to weird, old things.” Not that he could remind Murikabushi that he was particularly well-versed when it came to antiques, and he wasn’t so sure he should admit to collecting a stash of strange things from Mirrorspace. “And I don’t suppose any of you had ideas about who made it, did you?”

Hybris’ idea to take pictures of the phone screen was probably the best option they had, if Murikabushi was willing. Remarque suspected there was enough rapport between the two that if Hybris gave him puppy dog eyes, Murikabushi would probably give in.

He didn’t know much about Senshi phones but it would be good to know what protections they had in place and what could be bypassed. If Hybris could get the pictures, he could share them with the rest of the Court.

“Not at all,” Murikabushi said, shifting how he held the spike so Remarque could take it and get a better look. Any insight that anybody could come up with, they needed it right now. “With the way the crossguard looks like a hilt, I’ve been thinking ‘sword’? But for all I know, that’s completely wrong and my brain’s just poisoned by fantasy novels.”

More accurately, brain-poisoned by playing Dungeons and Dragons with Yuki, Leandro, Liánlí, Todd, Soren, and Huanxi. But that wasn’t the point.

Hybris’s idea was a good one, though—or, well. Maybe. “Taking pictures of the screen might work,” Murikabushi agreed, pulling the photos back up and angling his phone toward Hybris. “I don’t know if it’s going to work or not? I have no idea if our Mauvians have done anything with the phones to mess around with that. Even if it does work, the quality might be degraded somehow? But at least trying is better than nothing.”

Hyrbis gave a nod and thumbs up at Remarque's statement of being an expert on weird old things. In some ways, he could be considered the prince of weird old things, but Hybris supposed that was true for most order senshi and maybe not much of a flex in present company.

Pulling out an extremely nondescript phone from his space, Hybris cleared the extremely incriminating lockscreen, also incriminating wallpaper, and went into his preferred camera app. With very practiced gestures, he adjusted the setting for the lighting situation and lowered the shutter speed. "It shouldn't be that bad." He wasn't on Hella's level, but Hybris felt he was rather good at taking picture at awkward angles and eccentric situations.

"Provided your fussy order magic allows for it." It was said with a sort of chiding fondness. Honestly, Muri going to Order was a very Muri thing to do, but it was important to tease him about it at every opportunity. Leaning over with his phone, Hybris began to take photos of the images on screen, taking care to make sure it at least looked like he was being very careful and detail oriented. I am such a good little mirror senshi. Above reproach. Deserving of praise, promotions, and protection.

Remarque accepted the spike with both hands and turned it for a thorough look over. He seemed to have great faith in Hybris’ ability to copy the images and so spared no effort to hover or micromanage.

“If it's a sword, it's a bad one,” Remarque said, gripping what passed for a hilt. “Weight’s all wrong.”

He pointed it away from the two and carved an imaginary eight through the air but shook head again. “I don’t think you’d want to use this to cut or–” thrust didn’t seem like a word you should use in front of Murikabushi “–stab.”

Never mind that the spike didn’t seem to have any sharpness to it; it had a sharply angled tip so it made perfect sense to assume it had some skewering intention.

“All of the weight’s in the hilt, you’re going to wear yourself out with it. It’s clunky so your aim’s going to be slow, and off. On a normal sword it should balance a few inches from the guard.” He tapped the would-be blade but when he tried to demonstrate by balancing it in one finger, the hilt always dipped downwards. Six inches from the guard. Three. At the guard. It wasn’t until Remarque tried to balance it about the middle point of the hilt that the spike evened out.

“I’m sure you’re not going to be surprised that I’ve never seen anything like it. I couldn’t even guess where or when it was made, but I’d bet good money it didn’t come from Earth. I’m not even sure what this metal is, it feels strange. And it’s usually cheap, decorative swords that have pommels like this,” he said, eyeing the orb. “But this doesn’t scream ‘cheap’ to me. Don’t try to fight with it, you’ll hurt yourself.”

Further examination didn’t yield much more information, but he scrutinized it in great detail, anyway. There just wasn’t really anything worth expanding on.
