● Chiara sat on her bed, holding onto the letters she had exchanged with her new betrothed. They had been writing back and forth for a while, and he seemed like a kind person, and her parents approved of what they had read. Of course she had to watch what exactly she said because knew they were looking her letters over. She was beginning to become more curious about him and especially after running into Graham in history class, she realized she had to actively work to move on. She hadn't thought it would be an issue before he had returned but, seeing him overwhelmed her, to say the least. She took a deep breath before she returned her eyes to the written words from the one she was to be married to; Uriel Dawoud. He certainly looked the opposite of her, but he had a very good eye for how to write. She couldn't help but wonder if that was something he did on the side, she made a mental note to ask him when they got to know each other a little better. She glanced over at the picture of him that she had kept in the box before she sighed, folded up the letter again and put them all away.
✶ The last letter that they had exchanged they had made a plan to meet up. She was sure she'd seen him around the school but she hadn't yet quite physically ran into him. She smoothed out her dress before she stood up. She made sure that she looked like she had herself together and wasn't nervous about this. She knew that she in reality had no choice in the matter, but that didn't mean it was any easier to meet someone and tell them, Oh I'll be your wife down the line, nice to meet you! And yet...here they were. She did think he was kind; he was handsome and honestly? She was glad he was here. She took one more breath before she headed out, avoiding as many people as she could. She kept her expression under control as she smiled and waved to those who she couldn't avoid. She knew that she was more known than originally thought, if Graham's fiance-- no, Evelyn, knew who she was. She made it a point to call her by her name even in her mind because Evelyn was her own person and wouldn't like to be referred to as otherwise. She found herself enjoying the woman's company after all. She didn't want to lose a potential friend.
● Chiara found herself standing at the doors to the library where she pushed them open and walked in. They were set to meet in the back as that would keep it more private and they wouldn't be in front of everyone either. She ducked around a bookshelf and as she walked she ran her finger along the spines of the books before she found the one she was looking for. She slid her finger up and pulled it out while making a mental note of where it the library she had found it. she didn't like to give Dwayne any more work that he needed, even if he scared her and she'd never really gotten the courage to talk to him.
✶ Holding the book to her chest she made her way to the best lit, table that was in the back. She pulled the chair out with her foot and sat down after she swept her skirt under her legs and set the book down on the table. She rested her feet behind her as she opened it to the first page. She wanted to read about the events that had taken place in Arioso, especially after they had experienced it first-hand. She was looking forward to seeing Uriel in person and to keep herself from getting anxious about if he'd be behind she focused on her book and read but she had a copy of the last letter she had received in her pocket, one hand resting on it.

If no one knew you were in the bathroom because you were too nervous to go into the library and say hi to your fiance, would it still be considered embarrassing? Uriel bounced his knee as he sat in a stall with his hands in hair, looking downward, trying to get his jitters down. His nose didn’t decide to spontaneously bleed on him so far, so he took that as a good sign. He knew that this was going to happen, being betrothed. Practically told it was going to happen his whole life, so he should have been prepared for it, right?
The letters, at face value, were reassuring. Chiara Aelius sounded pleasant enough, not to mention interested. When the topic of meeting up at Utopia came up, before they even moved there, he hesitantly agreed to it. Being there now, around all of these other royal families, did not help with any anxiety he had before. Some of the girls at the school were petrifying and if lockers were a thing, he would have feared being stuffed into one by them. So far none of the ones that alarmed him looked like the woman that he was to marry. Thanks to the ancient invention of painting and mail, he had an idea of what Chiara looked like. Hair practically as white as clouds, blue eyes, a tinge of pink on her cheekbones. Uriel brought his fingers to his lips and started biting on one of his cuticles. He needed to get up and go before he lost his nerve. But first: wash his hands. Nevermind the fact he didn’t even go to the bathroom, he just didn’t want to be called out for walking out with unwashed hands if anyone noticed.
Walking into the library, he thought about the kinds of things he wanted to ask her about. Some things from their letters, others about what she wanted out of their arrangement if that wasn’t too forward. Those kinds of questions could wait if they were too much. This was supposed to be a friendly meeting, and he worried that if they were going to… spend the rest of their lives together… he didn’t want their first meeting to start off on the wrong foot.
First meeting. This was their first meeting. Queue second seconds of internal panic.
‘The tea. Sweet Aimra’a.’ Uriel touched his hand along his crossbody pack, and sighed with relief as he felt the shape of the hand-sized tin under the fabric. He packed the spiced tea mix when he and Chiara finalized their arrangements to meet up. Flowers were considered, but he thought it would be too cliche. He didn’t even know what her favorite flower was, or if she were even allergic to them. Hell, he didn’t even know if she’d like the tea despite the fact he word-vomited about it in the letter. It was his close second favorite when done right.
Uriel walked lightly toward the back of the library, looking for the young woman who resembled the painting he had. It did not take long, though. Her hair stuck out in the oceans of darkly colored books that lined the shelves. He stopped and moved closer to look at her between the books and the shelf of the aisle he was in. Chiara did not look scary at all, and the painting did not do her looks any justice because she was beguiling to look at. ‘I still have time to leave, she hasn’t noticed me yet.’ Uriel told himself. The idea of what would unfold from that made the idea suddenly not so appealing. He slowly side stepped out from the aisle, and made his way to the table she was sitting at.
He placed a hand on the table for grounding and paused before speaking. “Chiara Aelius?”
She had to know who he was. Unless she somehow didn’t and he looked like a fool now. “Uh… I’m Uriel… you’re..” He realized he didn’t practice this, and didn’t want to use the word ‘betrothed.’ Sounded so official, so obligated. It wasn’t wrong, just gloomy, kind of. He scoured his brain for something more warm. “Promised.” While better, it sounded too inappropriate.
He stared back down at her, looking over her features before he realized he was really staring. “May I– may I join you?”

● Chiara felt her anxiety growing the longer that he wasn't there. Sure she knew she was early, and there really wasn't a set time, but she couldn't help but wonder if he'd like her. She chewed at her lip nervously as she read the book, her finger brushing over the page where it had a picture of Arioso and she recalled seeing that sight herself. Something she never wanted to see again. She sighed softly, resting her hand on her lap as she glanced up occasionally with movement, but she knew he'd know what she looked like, at least she hoped so. She even tried to wear the same color as she had in her portrait, even if it was more casual. She folded her ankles underneath the chair as she pushed her hair behind one ear, lips curling into a soft smile as she was unaware, she was being watched. She was excited to meet him, especially after all of his writing and how excited he managed to sound even if through letters. She hoped he wouldn't be disappointed in her either, seeing as she'd had multiple moments of weakness here at the school. Perhaps she would be lucky and he hadn't seen her like that yet.
✶ She blinked softly as she saw a hand set on the table, she heard her name before lifting her head up and her blue eyes met his gold ones. She took a second to register that it was actually him, he looked even more handsome than in the portrait. She heard his introduction of who he was and she shook her head to pull herself back to reality. " Ah, yes! Uriel it's so good to see you in person!" she managed to keep her voice low while her excitement slipped through the tone. She nodded her head and motioned to the seat across from her as she closed the book in front of her, sliding it to the side. She didn't want to make him feel like she wasn't paying attention to him now that he was here. She resisted the urge to stand and give him a hug, but she felt suddenly small compared to his height. Was she short or was everyone just so tall? She smiled happily up at him as she pulled her hand out of her pocket, waiting for him to sit down across from her. She leaned on the table a little bit, looking over at him. " How are you enjoying the school so far? It's quite a..." she paused, pressing her finger gently to her lips before smiling and lowering it again. " Well it's a different experience than back home, that's for sure." she didn't know if the rule about where they came from changed if one was engaged to the other, but she didn't want to worry about it too much. She knew he was from Funkazan so he surely knew she was from Alore.
● Chiara tilted her head, her blue eyes looking him over before she smiled again and closed her eyes as she did, before she leaned her head on her hand waiting for his answer. She couldn't help but wonder if he felt good about this whole thing, she was nervous but not upset. At the least she was able to talk to him through letters before meeting him so it wasn't like she was thrown to the wolves. And he seemed to almost be soft spoken as well, but so was she so it worked well. Perhaps she'd have the chance to be a little truer to herself with him....

What happened in the timeline that led to his fate being potentially sealed to a woman like Chiara Aelius? Conversation, at least between leaflets of paper and ink pens, was rousing and they actually became a highlight of his days in Funkazan, but it said nothing about her beauty. The way she pushed her light locks of hair and studied her book had him questioning his vision. It was kind of intimidating and Uriel made a hard swallow. Meanwhile he didn’t exactly match the image of what some women would crave in the opposite sex. There were plenty of examples roaming the halls already, like Mirabella Rousseau, Akwasi Ananse, or that hot looking cowboy. Sure, he didn’t feel like his appearance was all that unbearable but he knew he could do more about it. Maybe after this, he could explore that. Reach out to Micah, Jamal, or Enzo. They were always helpful.
’She sounds cute too.’ Uriel couldn’t help but to find so many positives about her. The enthusiasm behind her voice sounded genuine and he didn’t immediately notice his shoulders lose some of their tension. He took the seat he stood beside when she invited him to join her. His lips made a nervous smile and for a second he couldn’t come up with any words to say back to her. His hands wrung over one another under the table but he made himself stop and forced them to sit over his legs. “It’s nice to finally meet you too, Chiara. Now when we write to each other I can hear your voice as I read your letters. That is, if you want to keep on. We don’t have to since we can see eachother now, but it would be nice. Only if you want to.” The Fukazan prince trailed off. Things seemed like they were going so far, so good. Gold eyes followed the book as Chiara closed it and pushed it aside. While he was curious about the subject matter she was reading up on, he pulled his sights back on her for fear of being rude. Uriel didn’t want to make a bad first impression, and told himself to ask her about it later on. He blinked slowly and looked back into her eyes. He focused on her question while trying not to just stare at her like a total creepster. ”Oh!” He let the sound as if he were outside and threw his closed fist to his mouth while the rest of his body stiffened. Since he was only facing her, he wasn’t sure just how many people were around. “I’m sorry, um…” He looked at Chiara before speaking again, silently seeking her approval and a little forgiveness while he was at it. ”It’s been neat. It’s just like how I imagined some of our colleges… you know, where I’m from. I didn’t think I’d ever get a chance to go to one being a prince and my parents having their expectations, but I guess they really didn’t have a choice in the end, did they?” Uriel followed her lead, and kept mention of their kingdoms between them. Kingdoms of fire, and of light. It sounded nice when put like that. ”There’s a thing or two I miss about home but I think I like it here more.” It was only a half truth. He liked Utopia a lot more.
”I got to meet you too so that’s a plus.” His lips parted and he flashed the teeth behind his smile. He knew he was rambling on. ’stop using too many words you fool!’ He chided himself in his mind. ”What about for you? Has Utopia been treating you well too, Chiara? I’ve heard some classmates complaining, but you look like you’re enjoying yourself.” He gestured with his hand in her direction as he spoke, taking note of how at ease she seemed. How bright, beaming, and becoming of a light princess.

● Chiara was happy to see that he did in fact look like she had gotten from the portrait and his writing. He was clearly a little nervous but then again so was she; she just did not show it because she was trained from a young age not to. She did not know the expectations of those from Funkazan but she did not mind that he was open. It was something that she almost admired, and she hoped that she would eventually be able to be herself around him as well. Not that she was ever not herself to some extent, but her true emotional self. She kept that mask on securely around others and it was hard to convince herself to allow it to slip down even when she knew she could trust someone. Graham was easy, but she had not yet found someone she could fully connect with other than him.
✶ Perhaps Uriel could be that person for her.
● She rested her head on her hands as she folded them under her chin. Her blue eyes watched him curiously, as he sat down, his hair was dark, especially compared to her own but she could not help but note the differences right away. Could her parents have chosen someone who looked more opposite her, at least appearance wise? Not that any of that bothered her, she was almost excited about it. It would be fun to spend time with someone else who felt potentially out of place, even if it was more for a different reason than her own was. She knew that they would both be held too much higher expectations but she knew that no matter whom she ended up with she would be. At least he was kind and she already rather knew him. All bonuses that she knew she would not always have when it came to her partner so she took advantage of having them right now in the moment. Her head tilted to the side slightly as he spoke about still writing and she nodded her head before letting her hands drop to the table. ” Yes! I mean, it’ll be good to see each other too, but for the times we get busy that would be nice.” she could not help the blush that had risen to her cheeks as he mentioned reading her letters in her voice and she looked down shyly, a small smile on her lips.
✶ When he made the loud noise and caught himself, she laughed softly, shaking her head slightly. She knew how easy it was to be loud in a quiet space, and they did not have a whole lot of people around them since she went looking for the more private location. She listened to him talking about colleges in Funkazan and how he had wanted to go. She tilted her head slightly before she hummed. She had never put much thought to the schools in Alore, as that was something she had never really had the option for before. ” Yeah, I don’t think they did…” she knew if her parents got their way she wouldn’t be here, but the fact that she had gotten to meet Uriel really made her happy.
● She blinked softly as he actually smiled at her, which in combination with his words made her face go red again but she smiled wide right back at him. She was glad he liked meeting her and that all of her worries about him not liking her were unfounded. She did not mind the talking and she unconsciously reached a hand out setting it over his after he gestured to her. Her cheeks were still dusted pink but she was surprised at how warm his hand was underneath her own. She knew her initial appearance was mostly her mask but she felt her shoulders relaxing the more time she spent with him. ” I like it! A few of the classes were a little…unnerving, but that is what I am reading about now. If I’m expected to be able to lead my people, I need to know more.” she admitted, not knowing exactly what he knew of her situation other than their betrothal. Her next words slipped out but she said them with a softer, more natural smile. ” And I’m glad I got to meet my goldfinch too! I’ve been looking forward to this.” she squeezed his hand softly and leaned on her other arm, resting her free hand on her forearm.

“Yeah, I mean– I would like to keep seeing you too. We’re already here and we don’t have to wait weeks to hear from each other like before, heh-heh.” He chuckled a little. Uriel was going to miss their back and forths but he agreed with Chiara when she said the letter writing would be nice to fall back on if they got separated. That was going to happen for them, but maybe less if he ended up living in Alore with her full time. That was the expectation, right? She was, afterall, the crown princess. He tilted his head and leaned to one side slightly as Chiara lowered her head, panicked for a microsecond that he said something that hurt her feelings. He cursed himself for being so tall, she was shorter and didn’t exactly make looking at lower heights easy. ’I’m going to be doing a lot of leaning in this relationship. This is fine. She’s worth it!’
Her laughing at his library faux pas sent a wave of relief through him and he felt better that she found it funny and not as embarrassing as he felt at that moment. Though, she really didn’t seem the type. She was bright and bubbly and he felt that about her in positive ways. ”I know you didn’t get to do a lot where you’re from, but are there any places you like a lot? Not universities, anywhere.” Uriel felt compelled to leave this meeting with as much information about Chiara as he could fill his potato sized brain with. He believed he knew a lot already from reading and rereading her letters but this was more invigorating.
The movement of her hand did not go unnoticed. If anything, he saw it happening in slow motion in the corner of his eye. Her hand rested over his and he could feel how pleasant her delicate touch felt. His cheeks however reddened at the realization of it all and he blinked at her, his face breaking with a smile. Uriel then turned his hand over so that his palm faced hers. ’Is this too fast? It’s only hand holding… but is it? She’s comfortable with it and… it is hand holding so… stop overthinking it.’
Uriel glanced back at the book more closely as he listened to Chiara tell him the reasons for her book choice. He lipped the title to himself and realized just what class he was talking about. That class. “Unnerving is an understatement… He grimaced at the thought and put his hand over the part of his forearm that was cut in that wild daydream they had. His scales had failed to appear and protect him, not to mention he got stabbed and could have died from that injury but that apparently had been by design. It made him wonder how he even survived in the real war for as long as he did. That, and she made him wonder about what happened to her while she was in simulation, but believed that would be a question for a different day.
”Goldfinch?” He repeated the nickname Chiara was calling him and the realization did nothing to provide relief for the blush he was already wearing. Uriel smiled back at her. ”That one’s cute… I like it.” Now, he needed one for her. He looked over at her and how she relaxed on the other side of their library back table. He considered a dove for her white hair, but there was a better one that came to mind. ”So did I, Bluebird.”

Chiara smiled happily as he replied and she nodded her head. She was happy he wanted to be able to see her as well, and it made her heart beat a little faster that he admitted it. She knew that when all was said and done, and if things worked out for them, he'd likely be coming to Alore to live with her. Much like Graham would have once done, because she was after all the crown princess, and she couldn't just up and leave. Even if she wanted to, which she didn't, that would be Argus would have to rule and honestly, she didn't see him wanting to do so. Not that she faulted him for that whatsoever, it was a very daunting task. She felt the pressure every day and even when she was here she could feel it with the voices and realizations she had made while on the horrible battlefield that was history class. " I still reread some of your letters by the way, I love the way you write. It's so...." she paused, her hand that was not now held in his lifted and she spun it a couple of times trying to come up with the word before she snapped her fingers and grinned at him. " Fluid!" now it was her turn to be a little loud and she covered her mouth before she felt a heat forming on her cheeks and she laughed nervously. " Sorry, got a little excited there."
She tilted her head as he asked what she did enjoy doing at her kingdom she hummed, her hand shifting so she pressed her finger to her lips and thought to herself. " Well I really liked the gardens, although that still doesn't afford me the privacy because there's always someone watching." she finished the thought in her mind, ' Especially after they found out what happened out there with Graham.' She then lowered her hand and leaned forward onto her arm and smiled happily. " I mean other than that, usually I went to the library. If I'm not reading about what I need to learn, I have quite a collection of fiction books that pass the time when I'm allowed free time." she knew that her life sounded quite restricted to lots of other people, but this was just what it had always been! She wished she was afforded more freedom, but she also understood that she had a responsibility to her people to remain safe.
When he smiled back at her she felt her cheeks tinting a slight pink for an entirely different reason than being embarrassingly loud in a usually quiet space. He looked so handsome when he smiled like that. She opened her mouth for a second before she shook her head to pull herself out of her thoughts, it wasn't often that someone was able to stump the Alorean princess, but he'd managed to do just that by being himself. She didn't even have that with Graham; and that thought alone made her feel more confident that this was the best to thing to focus on. " Yeah it was an interesting class." she murmured finally, her hand that was now in his larger one shifted slightly so that she could wrap her smaller fingers around his palm. She was glad she was out of it and honestly hoped not to have to deal with that again, but something told her she would.
When she let his nickname slip, she shifted her hand and giggled softly into it as she covered her mouth. She was slightly embarrassed, but he didn't seem to mind it either. But when he came back with one of his own, her eyes widened, and she felt her lightly dusted cheeks getting hotter. She smiled though, adjusting her feet as she began to very lightly trace her thumb over his palm and lowered her hand. " You're just as quick..." she enjoyed the easy-going back and forth they had between them already. The letters certainly seemed to help that case. " So, where's your favorite place back home?" she wanted to leave with more information on him as well and the fact that he was able and comfortable holding her hand made her extremely happy.

talking - thought
It was a bit of a surprise to hear Chiara say that she reread the letters he wrote to her. Meaning, she chose to do that. He knew they could get lengthy and that lengthy letters were not everyone’s cup of tea. Still, it was warming to hear someone take an interest in him like that. He watched as Chiara tried to find a word, and he quickly came up with a few ideas but held back because he wasn’t sure if his word choices would match the point she was getting to. So when she blurted out the word a bit louder than she wanted, he looked back at her with a similar energy, his own closed hand rising to his lips in sympathy for her accident. A subtle chuckle left him, but for as funny as it was, he couldn't help but to notice how lovely Chiara looked in the moment. ”Welcome to the club. That was the initiation. Maybe… we could go somewhere where we won’t get the boot from the librarian?” He offered. He was just as likely to let out another loud noise as she was, and he didn’t have much of an idea of where they’d go, but had the feeling that at this rate it might not matter.
”I tend to… re-read your letters too.” Uriel admitted, diverting his gaze to the table below. ”They don’t read like letters– I mean, they read like you’re talking to someone in front of them.” They were polite, as was she, and they did not read overly formal or scripted, false.
The things that Chiara said she enjoyed were things he found himself to do from time to time himself. Only difference was that she was conscious of not being alone. Uriel knew he wasn’t always alone himself, especially when tensions between him and his parents were higher, usually brought on by something they blamed him for. He wasn’t even the one named to inherit the throne, that was Micah’s. He wondered if their parents put eyes on him as often. The library and gardens were still places, despite being watched, she still liked. His brows raised to the mention of books. He knew she read but it was a common interest and more he wanted to know about. ”Reading for fun and not to study, is that something you get to do often?”
He slowly pushed a breath through his nose as the lingering thoughts of the last class were wiped away, leaving him to be aware of the sensation of his hand against Chiara’s. Uriel did not mean for it, but he recalled the last time his hand had been held in a heartfelt way. The other hand’s owner was lighter in complexion and had ink that he always found himself tracing his fingertip along. Maybe he was imagining things, like a feeling tied to the skin and the meaning of the action of Chiara’s fingers when they curled around his hand, but it warmed his cheeks the way Sebbie’s used to. ”I hope next time our teacher gives us more warning next time.” Uriel lifted his sight upward and back to Chiara with an easy smile.
He noticed how her infectious laughter stopped the sound of the nickname he offered up, his lungs freezing mid-breath as he watched her to see just how he would react. When Chiara spoke up again, he was able to exhale and laughed a little. ”Not usually. Sometimes I can get stuck on re-writing the same ten words in different sentences for hours…” He confessed with an embarrassed look on his face. That was his current plight and he could not remember how many pieces of paper he threw to the fire filled with half written sentences and lines through them all.
”Mine?” Uriel repeated as he brought his free hand up to press under his chin in thought. They existed, but he was struggling to think of one at the moment. ”I like the markets. I didn’t get to sneak out to them a lot but when I did, it was fun. It was almost like an adventure each time I did because there would always be something new, or something I didn’t see the last time I was there. The ones in F– at home have a lot of street food vendors and one time I accidentally spent all of my coin on the snacks alone.” He remembered that particular day, as well as how he felt the night of. Uriel put his hand to his stomach absentmindedly at the thought. He had a headache and his face seemed to be flushing for no reason. ”I learned what “Plethora” was for the first time. My heart felt like it was racing for a couple of days after that.”
”There’s also all the books stores, and— there’s a puppeteer near there. It’s meant for kids, but the old man is good at hiding some adult humor in his stories too.”

Chiara hadn't often been loud in the library but there was something about the energy between them that made her feel more and more excited about getting to know him. At his offer to go somewhere that the librarian wouldn't get mad at them, she laughed under her breath. She could think of a few places, perhaps that would be a good idea. She didn't want to be on the receiving end of the gentle librarian's anger, even if he was big and scary she knew he was still kind, and she wanted to keep herself in good terms with him. " That might be a good idea. We don't want Sir Thompson to be upset with us." she quite enjoyed her time in the library, and she certainly didn't want to sully that with any kind of indiscretion even if she didn't mean to do so. Even worse would be causing something to happen that would affect Uriel as well! So, she wanted to be careful about the consequences of her actions. His admission of re-reading her letters made her eyes light up even the slightest as he looked down at the table. She was happy to hear that she managed to sound genuine even though the written word, because even though they were just now meeting it was a nice feeling for her to be understood. She felt herself getting shy again, her free hand gently rubbing the back of her neck gently. " I'm glad, I wanted to make sure I meant everything I said..." she trailed off, her own blue eyes shifting to look to the side at the wall. She was happy but it was a new feeling for her to feel her heart beating so hard.
His follow up question to her response about reading made her turn back and smile at him. They both had an interest in reading, so it was a good topic for them to focus back to if they needed a lighter topic. She thought about the answer to his question before she actually answered, wanting to be honest as she could with him even if it worked against the rules of talking about where they were from. This was a different situation, right? " When I was younger, I had more time, but the older I get the more is required of me." she tilted her head slightly to the side, becoming a little more aware of her hand still in his. " I still try to find time as I can, coming here has given me more time. My mother can't tell me I spent too much time indoors and that it's bad for my health." she knew her parents came from a place of good, but she also couldn't help but feel like she was smothered; especially with her own sister and how they were treated compared to one another. " Lately though I've been reading up on the war, I didn't know what to do in class and...." she paused before biting her lip gently. " I need to be able to help my people. If I can't, I won't be a good ruler." she knew it was a very unoriginal statement, but it was her truth. Something told her that he would understand.
Even though he was acting like it was something to be embarrassed of she shook her head and leaned forward slightly so that she leaned her head on her hand. " That just means you want to get it right, and it happens to everyone, I'm sure." she didn't do enough writing to have a solid thought, but she didn't want to make him feel like it was a bad thing. To the contrary, she thought it was a good thing. The block itself was not, but the fact that he was aware of it and still pushed through was.
As Uriel spoke, she listened to every word. Her feet folded under the chair as she kept a soft smile on her face. He spoke so fondly of his home and the things that he was able to do. The princess did feel a slight tinge of jealousy for even being able to get out and go enjoy the markets because she never had been able to do that. However true that was, she had found her own ways to pass the time. It sounded like Uriel had adventures and she really hoped that she'd one day be able to go on those adventures with him! As he spoke of a puppeteer, she tilted her head slightly while keeping it on her hand. She hadn't thought of how one would sneak in adult jokes into a routine that was meant for children, nor did she have any idea of what the jokes themselves might be. She thought back to the times where she had spoken to Xena, and some of the things that she heard she got up to. Sure enough, she felt her face going red and she covered her mouth with her curled up fingers and looked to the side. She didn't understand any of the terms used, and even if she did it would only be from definition only. " That all sounds so fun. I've never been able to leave the castle, nor have I bothered trying to sneak out." she shifted her lips into a pout. " It gets boring at home sometimes, but it sounds like you get to go out and do such fun things." she thought about if she really wanted to say her next sentence but in the end she decided to do so. She moved her head off her hand and her hand dropped to the table gently as she almost reached out for their already close hands. " Perhaps I could come see this market one day, then we could explore my own." she smiled shyly up at him, her cheeks had cooled but she pictured them walking along and enjoying themselves in a way she had never been able to do so before. Chiara really, really hoped that they'd be able to make that happen.

talking - thought
Uriel turned his head and glanced around for any sign of Librarian Thompson and felt relief for the time being. That man could snap Uriel like a glowstick and he knew it, not that he thought he thought so poorly of the man’s temperament. His pearly-haired fiancee sounded keen on the idea of finding somewhere else to converse and avoid falling out of his good graces. “Any doubts I had… they’re not there anymore.” short strokes were made against the top of her hand by her thumb as he commented quietly. He didn’t want to lie and say he never had doubts, and was embarrassed by the confession. This meeting was going well so far, as well as the letter exchanging. The anxiety and tension that could have been there was alleviated. He didn’t really want to think about what this meeting would have been like if they were meeting as total strangers.
He mulled over how she said preparing for her role took time away from things like reading. Other hobbies as well, he figured. His dad his whole life was frequently busy for similar reasons, and he knew it could be a similar experience for Chiara when the time came. He had to laugh at what she said about her mom, not in disrespect but more to relate. ”Yours said that a lot too, yes?” A grimace crossed his features at the thought of how both of his parents made similar comments, seemingly for all of the things they disapproved of more than anything. Chiara was still trying to partake in reading at least, and while it wasn’t for leisure it was for good cause. ”I don’t know a lot about ruling, but I would think becoming more well versed on things is a good thing.”
The topic of ruling and knowing revealed to Uriel small holes in his own knowledge about the current state of their kingdoms. Funkazan and Alore had to be on cordial terms at least for this arrangement to be made. What kind of history did their respective countries have between one another? What… was society and politics like in Alore? What was his role going to look like…? ’No’ he told himself. He couldn’t let the panic over a cascade of half-important unanswered questions lead to him derailing this meeting.
But, that panic sensation began to slough off as he watched how Chiara looked at him. Looked at him with that reassurance and understanding. It was a similar vibe he got from Micah or Enzo when he found himself in the midst of eternal struggle. She was someone from the outside of their realm and up until a few months ago a complete stranger. To not get a side eye from her… felt nice. Almost too nice, like he didn’t want to trust the feeling.
Gods, Uriel hoped he wasn’t boring her. He knew he could go on about something forever, if someone allowed him. He wasn’t a seasoned traveler but Funkazan had the best markets and he’d enter any useless argument to defend them. As he saw the tilt of Chiara’s head while explaining the puppeteer, paired with the rosening of her soft looking cheeks, he peered at her curiously behind his glasses. He grinned politely, but couldn’t figure what brought this on. He didn’t think he said anything to illicit that response, unless maybe she found plethora provocative. ’I mentioned the market, how I nearly ate myself to death, then the puppeteer who–’
… who had the adult humor. An unwilling blush of embarassment creeped up his face as he realized the error. An error that, if appearances meant what they did in his two-celled brain, led to Chiara thinking he was talking about… sexual humor.
“Oh, Gods…” he let out. How could he be such a despicable influence in her so fast?! He! Was! Not! Worthy! ”I meant jokes like taxes… or politics. Not the other kind. Forgive me for not being clear...”
She never left the castle? As in, the castle and the perimeter surrounding it? ”Never?” Uriel repeated. His eyes shifted as he thought about that. Chiara… at least in this respect, reminded him of a fairytale princess trapped behind palace walls. Her parents might not have been evil fairies or fire-breathing dragons, but they were the ones responsible for that ‘imprisonment.’ That was as far as the similarities went, though. ”Since we’re here… would you like to um… go into town together one day?” He paused, feeling a little squeeze in his chest at where was going with this. ”Like… a date?”
Uriel’s hand parted from hers but only as he rose from his chair. It was just as good as anytime to leave the library before they both violated the library laws. ”We can go outside and see where our feet take us, if you’re okay with that.” He offered his hand to her.

Chiara knew there was probably doubt about the situation they found themselves in. If he hadn't had any in the first place she would have been surprised. She was raised knowing this would happen again, but this time she was a little more cautious at first because of how things ended the first time. What good would it do for her to get all attached if it was just going to be pulled away from her again like what she had with Graham? She was surprised to hear though that just meeting this first time that his doubts had been wiped clean. That was a good thing! She smiled and her eyes flicked down to their hands again as she squeezed his hand slightly. " Same for me...although you're still quite charming even through your letters." she had at least had confidence now that he did actually like her, which was comforting. The chances of being able to hide how one felt this long in person was unlikely.
She didn't realize that she had spoken so openly but when he laughed, she nodded her head. " Oh yes. Even when I went outside, she still made sure I was watched." she knew that to most people she was probably a spoiled princess, and honestly that's how it seemed like her sister thought of her. She lifted her head and searched his eyes with her own as she thought to herself. She thought he looked very well-informed, and she found herself a little more comfortable with the thought of ruling with him at her side. At least he was able to keep a calm face when he was dealing with at least, the present conversation. She couldn't help but laugh softly at her next thought. ' I'm glad he expresses himself though...it's not hard to guess how he's feeling.' the princess had always been surrounded by people who were able to hide how they felt, so someone being so open with facial expressions was nice for her. " I think so. I think they mostly had an issue with the..." she paused, pressing a finger to her lips as she thought for a moment before she lowered it having come up with the right way to say it. " Mostly they had issue with the fantasy or fiction works I read. They wanted it all to be productive." that could get really tiring though, especially when she got into the harder stuff. Like the readings about the war? That was not only tiring but it was also extremely dark. She still felt like it was important to know though.
Chiara wasn't too informed on the more sexual nature of things, but she knew that quite a few royals were active, so it wasn't like she disliked the thought. Her mother had always told her that she should wait until she was with someone she truly liked, but before the chance came along with the last time she had.... it had been pulled from her. So, when Uriel's face lit up and he corrected himself she couldn't help but laugh softly again. He genuinely seemed to be worried about it and she shook her head before speaking. " I see! I was wondering how that kind of humor could be snuck over children. Taxes and politics make much more sense." although if she was admitting it, they sometimes went over her head and she was supposed to understand them. " Don't feel like you have to apologize though...we're all human, after all." she almost kept going but caught herself, biting her tongue from saying her complete thought. If he was worried about how that came across, she'd best not. ' Although I know at some point, we'll have to have that conversation...' she was no stranger to the expectations of royalty, and the biggest one for her which was she was expected to produce an heir.
She was pulled back to the present when he repeated her word. She smiled bashfully and shook her head. She knew that how her parents raised her was sheltered, that much was obvious especially after how she had spoken to Graham about the things he was able to go do. The fact that she had never set foot in Shahiti was probably a good thing, but she couldn't help but feel like she missed out on what she would have considered an adventure. Perhaps she would be able to have a new adventure with Uriel, exploring Funkazan. She couldn't help her eyes from widening briefly at where his question was going and she felt her heart beat a little bit harder when he got the full question out. She knew she blushed, but she smiled at the same time; that sounded like it would be fun! " Of course! I would like that very much." she nodded her head again as she spoke. She was glad he was thinking about that as well, and she was already looking forward to it even if they didn't have plans yet. For a split second she missed his hand in her own, and she slowly pulled it back towards herself but as he extended his own back towards her after he stood, she felt inexplicably relieved. She knew that holding hands wasn't something that spoke a lot, but the fact that he didn't mind or even liked it, made her happy.
Pulling the book closer to herself again she left it on the table as she set her hand in his and stood up next to him. She quietly pushed her chair back in, taking the book in her other hand as she looked up to him. Quite literally. She knew he was tall, but she came to about his shoulder. With a soft smile she leaned against him for a moment. " Perfect height difference, no?" she was teasing but she genuinely was glad it wasn't too much of a difference in height between them. " I just have to stop by the front desk, check this book out." she raised it up for a second before they began to walk up towards the desk where the book was kept. She had fallen quiet, but it was comfortable for her, and as she walked, she shifted her hand in his slightly so that their fingers were laced together. His hand was so warm.
Upon reaching the desk she chose not to take her hand from his and she set down her book, writing down in the allotted spot. She took the book again once she had done so and lifted it back up and held it against herself, smiling up to Uriel. " Okay, good to go." she didn't know if he had anywhere in mind, but she would follow him, and even if he didn't, she knew of a few places that would be nice for a conversation. She was just happy to continue spending time with him at this point.

By now, the worst part of their first meeting felt like it was over. They were still new to one another but Uriel’s nerves on that settled. Relationships of all sorts had their ups and downs, so theirs would be no different. At least, if what the people around him and the books he read spoke true. The ones with his former lovers never reached beyond the honeymoon phase, with both ending the same way: undone by higher powers and without any kind of goodbye or closure. This time was different, the stakes were higher. Chiara’s gifted him with a boost of optimism, and he grinned back at her in response to her words.
His brows lifted. ”Maybe not as much as you but I know the feeling.” She was the heir to a powerful kingdom, not to mention a lady. Give or take a few Uriel was aware a lot of Kingdoms did the same thing when it came to their princesses. While not a princess, he remembered how there seemed to be more watchful eyes on him when he returned home after the war. ”Maybe they’ll back off once we’re married. Our parents, I mean.” They would truly never be free of the eyes, not completely. He looked back at her and he huffed a chuckle to her own laugh.
Uriel’s head pulled back, appearing scandalized by what he was hearing. It was by the end of her sentence that he realized what he was doing and corrected himself, forming a thin line with his lips from the embarrassment. ”Sorry, it’s just that I indulge in those kinds of books. A lot.” He did more than he cared to admit. ”Mine tried to keep them away from me too. Well, books altogether. It felt like that…” If he had a coin for every time one of his parents tore a book from him in favor of more manly pursuits… he’d wouldn’t have enough to buy all the books but enough to keep him pre-occupied until he was dead.
’Disaster averted!’ Uriel wasn’t going to be labeled as a lecherous pervert, not today! Not that he was innocent when it came to such topics. He laughed nervously. ”Thank you for understanding, my lady. Maybe one day when you come to Fu– My Kingdom I can show you what I mean… if he’s still around.” He wanted to share that part of his world with Chiara one day, even if it were after they were married. ’Early morning would be safest, even if we had a security detail. I have a few tricks up my sleeve too…’ Growing dragon scales would provide extra protection in the event he’d need to shield her, and if it came down to it, his uncanny ability to start fires could be put to use too.
He laughed a little as he watched Chiara give a cheerful reply on his impromptu ask about a date. Now he needed to deliver, which wasn’t as much of a worry as being on a date with her was. ”G-great! I admittedly haven’t been to town yet but I hear there’s some good places.” He picked up from classroom chatter that there were a number of bars in town, but knew there had to be other places he could take her. ”Maybe I can ask Micah or Enzo if they know.’
He felt Chiara’s hand slip back into his after their brief separation and he held it as she rose from her seat. Watching her stand Uriel realized he hadn’t actually gotten to see her on her feet. There was a noticeable height difference but not enough of one that bothered him. He found it, along with her remark that their height difference was perfect, to be pleasant about her. It had distracted him from the fact that she briefly leaned into him and when he noticed Uriel felt a prickling sensation up his neck and face. With his other hand he measured where the top of her head reached him, hovering it over her then sliding it through the air to where it bumped against his shoulder. ”It’s just right.” He honestly wasn’t sure and decided he would take her word for it. Sebastian had been the same height, and Uriel realized he would be leaning over if they ever kissed. The prickling sensation swept across his face again at the visual thought. Uriel made a quick nod of his head as she mentioned the front desk and followed her. He noticed how her fingers slid between his and he made no move to stop her. Dark eyes caught a look at them before she looked back up to her, smiling back.
With her book on Arioso checked out and her queue, Uriel led her out of the library at a leisurely pace, holding the door open for her to pass through. ”Is the koi pond alright?” It was one of many places at the academy, but if she had a different preference there were plenty of other things in just as much walking distance. Today was going better than he expected.
”Do you have any brothers or sisters here too?”

Chiara could only hope that their parents would back off, although she knew and had been thinking that likely they expected her to be easily controlled and because of that they hadn't taught her much about war. They could choose an advisor and get things to go their way, or the way things had been going. All the fighting seemed pointless but that didn't mean that it was without reason. It only caused more pain and suffering but that wasn't the worst part of it. So many lives were changed because of it, and it allowed those with aggressive ideologies to take control and keep it. " I hope so, but I know my parents will always have someone keeping an eye on me. Perhaps, with your help, we can slip away one day and have some actual time to ourselves!" she really enjoyed the thought of spending time with alone without the worry of having eyes on her or servants keeping an eye on her. She was more aware now than ever about the things that her parents had kept from her, and she knew that she had to make a meeting plan with Graham to get some answers to things that she knew would be uncomfortable. However, she trusted him to be honest with her.
She was pleased when he said he indulged in mostly fantasy books. She knew that her parents had the right mindset to keep her informed, but a girl had to dream sometime! They lived in a world where people had powers, but that didn't mean they didn't need an escape. And honestly, who would blame a little girl for wanting a handsome prince to come and rescue her from her castle? She had kept that thought inside of her head, but she eyed Uriel in her peripherals for a moment. Perhaps he could be that very same prince? It was planned without their knowing but honestly things had been going quite well. And as much as she enjoyed it when his face got flushed, she didn't want to embarrass him, and herself, too much while they still had to walk past quite a group of people. So that inside thought remained just that.
She was happy that they were making plans and even as she stood, the warmth from his hand not only coming from the fact that he was from a warmer nation than she was, but also from how warm she felt herself to be. She was a little embarrassed, but she ultimately was enjoying herself. " That's alright, we can explore the town together then! I doubt the numerous staff that I'm sure my parents have monitoring me wouldn't let me go alone, but if I was with you perhaps it would be an exception." that, or they could escape that watchful eye while they were here. " I would love to see your home regardless of him being there. Not only because it would be a new adventure in itself, but your home and part of what makes you yourself. And I want to know as much as I can about you!" she knew it was optimistic, but she had always been told that her enthusiasm is what helped her get through the hard times. Did that mean things would go perfectly? By no means. She could make the most of things though, as long as she had the right attitude to go with it.
She could feel his hand hovering above her head and when she glanced up, she saw what he did and where his hand landed. She smiled at him, both amused and a little flustered. That meant she would either have to go up on her toes or he'd have to come down to her. It wasn't too bad though, it was almost ideal, and she would have the perfect way to cuddle when they got to that point. Even if her thoughts were enough to give her cheeks a light tint it didn't stop her from leaning into him.
As he mentioned the koi pond, she nodded her head gently. " That sounds great! I actually don't think I've found that one yet..." while she had been making the rounds around the grounds, she knew that there was a lot to see and even here her parents were making attempts to limit how much she explored. She had stepped out into the hall and waiting for him, before she walked alongside him and was seemingly in no rush as she took a chance, pressing her arm a little more against him again and she this time tilted her head gently against his shoulder. His next question thought pulled a familiar face to mind and she blinked. She should have seen this coming, it was a common enough question, and she gathered from how he worded it that he had at least one sibling. She straightened up as she thought about how to answer, she loved her sister, she really did. She was just a lot. " Yes, I have one sister here." she answered, smiling sheepishly up at him. " She has been allowed a much different leash than I with being heir, and the differences are sometimes quite shocking." she didn't know how else to say it, Brittany was inherently different and she had a sudden feeling of anxiety that she might try to pull something but she pushed the feeling down. She still distinctly recalled how the other princess acted around Graham and how much it bothered her, but she didn't say anything in the presence of her parents. She knew her hand tightened slightly in Uriel's but she looked ahead of herself again as she let a gentle expression filter across her face. " I love Brittany, but she can be a bit overwhelming." she didn't know sibling dynamics that other royal siblings had, but she knew each relationship was different.
She decided to turn the question slightly back towards him, to hopefully keep her from spiraling into the hole that was her stormy relationship with her sister. " Given how you worded that, you must have siblings here as well?" she peered back up at him, her smile taking on a hint of curiosity this time as well.

talking ? thinking
Chiara sounded as excited to get out from under the watchful eyes of their respective kingdoms and explore the town outside of Utopia. Uriel couldn’t recall off the top of his head any rules about leaving except for the curfew, and none for him from Funkazan. Not that it always stopped him, or the prying eyes ever. He rolled his lips together, thinking on what the better option would be: Speaking to someone from Alore about it, or just making a run for it. One of them immediately stuck out as the best one. Act first then ask forgiveness later, right? His hand-to-hand capabilities were fair but the Funkazan prince believed his other talents filled in the gaps. On that thought, he looked at Chiara with an inquisitive look, wondering if she was blessed with anything herself. For now, he told himself, he’d hold on to it for another time.
He grinned to hear her enthusiasm about being able to see Funkazan, and he did want to take her there one day. It was his home, he fought for it with a full heart in spite of being forced to, and at least in that moment, he would do it again if he needed to. He didn’t explore far, but he had doubts he could find another Kingdom like it. For as much as he loved it, he felt equally smothered living there, like the gravity was stronger and trying to make him one with the ground. Utopia alleviated some of that feeling, and with it made the guilt about not wanting to go back home all the more stronger, and conflicted. With being betrothed to Chiara, not having to return to Funkazan permanently was practically a guaranteed thing, but more importantly an afterthought. He could feel a dull twist in his insides at the thought of admitting that and her somehow taking it the wrong way. They were going to be married, no time better than the present to at least offer to lay his cards on the table. ”I don’t think everything will be as exciting but I’ll tell you anything you want to know.” Uriel laughed a little, trying to keep the nervous sounds out of it. ”Maybe we can make it a game between us so that I can learn all there is about you too?”
He felt the unexpected lean of her against him and blinked softly. Here he was, only worried about holding hands with her. But at the same time, Uriel found something comforting about it. They’d finally met after months of letter writing, and she already trusted him enough to be even the slightest intimate with her. ”I only stumbled across it a couple of weeks ago…” Rather, sprinted past it like a madman while being chased by a very angry dark-haired woman that was far stronger than her petite body let on. The way Chiara’s arm was against his body as they walked didn’t go unnoticed, and gently he tugged at her hand if only to keep her arm that way.
Chiara had a sister, but there was something in the way she talked about her that gave him the idea their differences were more bigger than she was letting on. Maybe he misheard something and that her sister wasn’t the worst. It wasn’t any way he’d talk about Micah, that was for sure. But the squeeze of his hand along with how she called Brittany overwhelming at least revealed there was something about her that ate at Chiara. But what? Uriel looked down toward her, A slight frown forming on his lips. ”What about her is… shocking or overwhelming? If you don’t mind me asking.” He figured it may be useful to know for the future. Even now perhaps if she was at the school already. He wouldn’t broach the subject any further if she didn’t want him to.
He smiled with a quiet laugh. He walked into that one. ”I have a brother and a sister.” The Koi pond was the size of a large curvy swimming pool, complete with a walking path along the edge and an arching bridge on one end. Dozens upon dozens of warmly colored fish swam just under the clear water’s surface, nipping and moving with the light and shadows from above. He looked out and around at it and the surrounding gardened area, taking in how peaceful it was before looking back over to Chiara. ”Micah and Serephina. Micah’s gonna be King one day, and he’s always been a good big brother to me.” His head nodded slightly as he spoke, taking on a more serious but still pleasant tone. The things Micah did for him and in support of him could never be paid back in full, not in a single lifetime. ”Serepina is my little sister. She didn’t grow up with us the whole time, so I’m not as close to her…”
”Not to mention our Duchies, they’re practically family too.”
