The sun had already been up for a few hours, but Ahote was only just now making his way down to the garden to meet Clover. It was their annual tradition at every new year to search for the first signs of spring, clearing away the winter brush from the garden and searching for new sprouts. Clover was already there, arriving early with the sun, like all good gardeners, but Ahote had always required a little more sleep, and Clover was kind enough to let him sleep in.
Today was a rare warm and sunny day after weeks and weeks of frigid cold, and Ahote felt light and joyous, excited to meet his love for their yearly tradition. Picking up his pace, he cantered towards the garden patch, the smallest amount of dust trailing behind him.

Bounding through the garden Clover could hardly wait for her mate to come, of course she was patient..knowing he enjoyed sleeping in a bit. She adored this time of year above any other, the first days when spring was peeking out. As the sun warmed the earth and everything thawed..new foals appeared for other soquili..new baby animals were born.
Flowers blossomed and that, was what Clover was hunting for among the dead brush of her little garden. The sound of hoofbeats on the earth alerted the little slightly dirty mare. Her ears pricked and a warm beaming smile lit up her face.”Darling!! Over here over here!!” Bouncing in place she waited for him to get closer..then bumped their noses once he was close enough. “I missed you! Look I already dug up some stuff..do you think we’ll find them? For the new year?”

Ahote nuzzled Clover back gently. "I missed you too, my love!" Her excitement was contagious and his feet danced beneath him as he bent down to take a look where she had been digging. "Of course we'll find them! We always do this time of year. We've got New Years luck!"
He nudged a pile of leaves with his hoof, uncovering only twigs and fallen pine cones. No sign of life yet, but he just knew they'd find something. He turned back to Clover and bumped his hip against hers playfully. "You're always so much better at finding them than I am."

Humming in thought Clover gave Ahote a bump back, giggling more..she just felt so free. A new year was starting! Another amazing year with her one true love along with her familiars who were off doing their own new year prep. Probably eating up all the new growth they could find.
Mind swirling with thoughts her gaze focused back on the garden..keen eyes darting all about in the ‘hunt’ for the first blooms. “New Years luck hm? Is that a thing?” Her tone was teasing, nose booping Ahote’s before she got back into the dirt to dig.
Pulling & gently kicking at the thawing dirt the mare laughed at her mates words; it was true she did tend to find them first but maybe this year he’d find the first one. “Perhaps you’ll be the lucky one this year? You’ve gotten a lot better at finding edible plants. I’m so proud of you..”

Ahote shot Clover a playful smirk at her teasing. He had always been an easy going fellow, but his life had been just so full of happiness since he found Clover. They had a simple and fulfilling life together, and he couldn't ask for anything more.
He felt a rush of warm feelings as Clover told him she was proud of him. She had taught him so much, and he had been trying hard to remember all the things she was teaching him. "Well, I've got such a good teacher! I'll look over this way."
Ahote moved to a separate part of the garden, not too far away from Clover. Pushing leaves away with his hooves, he moved from side to side, checking every inch of his little patch of earth. As he nudged aside a fallen seed pod, he thought he caught just the slightest flash of bright green. He gasped, and bent his front legs, quickly crouching and bending down to get a closer look, his rear end high in the air. Giving a gentle nudge with his muzzle, he couldn't help but shout out "OH!" as he uncovered the tiniest little crocus sprout, just a small green spike barely breaking the surface of the soil. He quickly stood back up and spun around to face Clover.
"Look! You were right! I found something!" He couldn't help but bounce on the spot, looking back and forth between Clover and his little sprout in the ground.

This life is what she had always dreamed of..her heart felt lighter than air as they bantered and worked together. Side by side. When Ahote moved to hunt in a different part of the garden she did too. If they spread out then surely the sprouts would be easier to spot!
Excitement coursed through her veins..hooves shifting things out of the way..remembering all the yummy & helpful plants they had grown last spring. “I think we should plant a few extra rows this year darling, what do you think?”
Recalling what seeds they had stored Clover got a little distracted from their new year’s hunt but, Ahote’s exclamation snapped her right back into focusing. “Oh? What is it?” Moving closer her eyes lit up, beaming with pride. “You found it!! You found the first one!! It’s gonna be the luckiest year we have ever had!”
Mentally Clover thought maybe this year would be the one where their family grew..maybe this would be the year that tiny hooves pranced through the garden. “Maybe next year..when spring is coming we’ll have someone else here helping us hunt. Well done my love! It’s so beautiful..” Warm inside and out Clover moved to nuzzle him and peek closer at the little sprout. “It looks so happy. Just like us! Plants are such lovely things..every year is a new beginning.”

Ahote danced circles around Clover as she approached and leaned in to nuzzle her cheek as she proclaimed this year the luckiest year they've had. "All your good planting last year gave them the perfect environment to come back this year! We'll have a whole farm before you know it!" Ahote pictured it in his mind - row upon row of vegetables and flowers, fruit trees and herbs. Bees and butterflies floating around and helping the plants grow.
Clover mentioned having some new help this year, and Ahote agreed - they would definitely need some help if they were going to have the farm he was envisioning some day. "You're right, maybe a few more goats would be a good idea. They can help us hunt for herbs, and keep the weeds down! They're such good helpers." Ahote nuzzled Clover back as they admired the sprout he found, and it suddenly hit him - what Clover actually meant by somebody else helping them hunt. He turned to face her, eyes wide and mouth hanging open in astonishment.
"Wait...you mean....you-you really mean it?" A new vision danced into Ahote's mind - a little foal, no - two! Digging in the dirt and smelling the flowers, laughing and playing in the garden as Ahote and Clover worked. "I think that would be perfect." He leaned heavily against her, feeling more hopeful than he ever had in his life.

The laugh she released was bright and filled with tremendous love..she could picture it perfectly. Two little foals that were a unique mix of both of them..playing in the dirt and chasing butterflies amongst the flowers. Swallowing a swell of emotion she gladly cuddled Ahote..a family and a garden bursting with life..maybe some more goats..it was a dream to strive for. “It all starts with this..”
Pausing Clover bent to dust s few wet old leaves away. Then she did a little wiggly stomp of joy. “Look! Two! This really is our year. A year of new beginnings and growing our family..I love you Ahote. I’m so glad we found one another.” Leaning into his touch she gave their twin sprouts a gentle tap with her nose, filled with wonder..new life never got old. “Happy nee year to us.”

"Well, I'd say we're definitely off to a good start." He gazed out over the garden, visions of a family dancing before his vision once again. Lost in dreams of their future family and bustling garden, he was jerked back to the present moment by Clover's excited voice.
Gazing down, he saw a second bright green sprout. He moved over to Clover, matching her wiggly stomp of joy. "Two!!" He bounced up and down next to his mate. "Maybe two sprouts...means two babies one day." He let out an excited giggle before nuzzling Clover excitedly. "I love you, too, Clover. Happy new year to us, indeed. It's already the best one yet."

Two little ones? All for them..that sounded so fantastic she could hardly stop a tiny squeal. “Two! W-we could name them after flowers and plants!! Oh my..this is making me so emotional. I never thought in my wildest dreams..”
Giggling lightly she cleared more of the ground around their two bright green buds, marking the spot with a few stones. Had to make sure their goat friends didn’t get too excited and eat their good luck new year sprouts! “We can pass down so many things to them Ahote but, the biggest thing I want to give our future children…is love.”
Oh of course Clover wished they’d like goats and gardening too but..above all else she wanted them to know love. To feel it like she did every time her eyes met Ahote’s. “You’ll be the best dad..mmhm. No doubt about it!”
Teary eyed from emotions the little mare looked to the sky, breathing in deeply. This would be their best year yet..together they could conquer anything. Together they could make their dreams a reality. “I’m ready. L-let’s go look at the seeds and start planting!”
