Denali slowly opened her eyes, shifting slightly where she lay. She quietly gazed this way and that way as her eyes tried to adjust to the dim light beginning to transform the room. She continue to lay quiet, thoughtfully, as she waited for the others to start to awaken from their slumber. The previous night had come and gone in a flash. "Just like the past year..." she thought silently. As she continued to wait, her mind drifted to the prior year, and all it had brought. Good, but plenty of bad. Happiness, but so much sadness. "I just don't feel like a change in what the calendar says from one day to the next will make any difference. That's just not how things work." she lamented in a hushed tone. She knew a lot of ponies looked forward to the new year and new beginnings. But she just did not buy into the hype. And nothing would change her mind. =============== 161 words

Jingles the Balloon Pony awoke from her slumber. Today was a very special day. She yawned, and rolled over. Maybe I'll go check out what Denali and Delphi are doing.. Maybe it's a little too early... Maybe.. Maybe... She was indecisive. Especially when it came to her balloons. As much as she loved them, she wanted to share the joy and give them away. An internal struggle always ensued. Maybe that could be my New Year's resolution... to be able to give away my balloons. I can make new ones, anyway... Why am I being so difficult? Ok!
I'm going to go see what Denali and Delphi are up to, and I'm going to tell them my New Year's Resolution! Jingles jumped out of her resting position and quickly began trotting toward their den, I know it's a little early, but I bet someone's awake! Word count: 145

Delphinium slowly started to stir at the sound of Denali moving around. Sleepily, she let out a rather loud yawn. "Den....are you awake?" she said mid-yawn. She felt too lazy to just get up and go check. Though she too felt just meh about the idea of new years, she enjoyed staying up to watch the shenanigans of others. It was always quite entertaining. But now she was pretty exhausted from it all. Lazily she stretched, impatiently waiting for a reply. "Den!" she said in a raised tone. "Ugh...fine, I'll just walk over and check myself." she grumbled as she made her way across the room. 106 words

Jingles arrived at their den. Suddenly, she called out, "Delphi! Denali! Hey, guys!! Happy New Year!" There was no response. Hmm... well, I guess it is rather early.... Maybe they're still sleeping.... I wonder if they have a New Year resolution. Jingles sat down in front of their door and looked around her. Hey, the stars are beautiful tonight. Listening to the crickets chirp, she waited for sunrise and for someone to answer the door. The cool breeze tickled Jingles' neck, and Jingles smiled from ear to ear. It was the perfect weather. What a wonderful day to turn over a new leaf, she thought. Word count: 105

Denali, a bit annoyed at the commotion coming from both inside and outside, groaned as she sat up. "What do you want Delphi? You know I'm not in a good mood." she snapped a bit at her friend. She then turned her attention to the doorway as she grumbled, "What does she want? It's too early for any nonsense." New year new beginning huh? Yeah right." she complained under her breath. 71 words========================= . . . . . . . Delphi looked at her friend, a bit taken aback. She knew she had a very pessimistic view of the new year. And she couldn't argue with the logic in it; she felt the same way. But her friend seemed...unusually agitated. Like maybe something else was going on. "Um...Den...is everything ok?" she asked quietly. She waited a moment for a reply before turning to walk to the doorway. "Ah, Jingles...it's kinda early still but...come on in. Might not be the best time though..." her voice trailed off as she looked in the direction of Denali. 94 words

Did Delphi just say I can come in?! "I'm coming in, guys!!" And Jingles burst through the doorway. "Hi, Delphi and Denali! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!" 4laugh "What are you guys up to today, and can I join?!" Jingles was overcome by silence. "Uh... Was this a little early? Sorry........I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep and got really excited... You know, because today is the start of the new year and all....." Word count: 73

Delphi looked slowly from Jingles, over to Den and back. "Um, well, yes, it is pretty early but...there's more to it than that..." she let her voice trail off a moment. She knew Jingles was very eager for the new year and seemed to enjoy all the hype. So she knew she would need to approach the subject carefully. Esp since Den was in a very somber mood right now. "Jingles...the truth is, neither of us are really excited about the new year. It's a change in the day, but things just continue exactly as they had been the day before. We just don't feel that there's some magical 'this new day and new year will make it all better.' I know you're excited for it though, so...I don't want to take that away from you. And I know Denali wouldn't want to either." She paused a moment while she took a few steps closer to Jingles and whispering, "There's something else going on too. But I'm not sure what." She glanced over in Den's direction. "Just...try your best to be supportive. I'm sure she'll come around and get in a bit better mood." Delphi gently touched Jingles on the shoulder and smiled. "Even if we don't think the same about it, your cheeriness can be contagious." she said with a chuckle. 222 words

Jingles smiled from ear to ear and nodded. She then quietly whispered, "got it!" and leaped over to Denali. "Heey, Denali! So, yes, I am excited because it's the start of the new year. But I am also excited because this is an excellent opportunity to turn over a new leaf. You know how I've always been reluctant give away my balloons? Well, I think it's time for a change." Saying that, Jingles reached for a heart-shaped balloon and handed it over to Denali. "This is for you. Happy New Year!" Jingles emphatically exclaimed as she grinned at Denali. Peering over her shoulder, she glanced at Delphi and winked. Then Jingles mouthed at Delphi, "you're next!" Then she audibly whispered, "do you have a color preference, Delphi? I can just make more balloons, after all! I don't know why I was so reluctant to give away balloons when they are technically replaceable...."Word count: 152

Denali looked at Jingles with pessimism clearly visible on her face. She was about to protest, and tell her exactly why it was just silly to her. But she stopped short as she saw Jingles reaching for a balloon. Den knew how much they meant to her. And while it didn't change her perception of the whole idea of new years, it did touch her heart that she was being so thoughtful and kind. Even if she was a bit grumpy because of the early hour and other things going on. Slowly she reached out and graciously accepted the balloon from her friend. "....Thank you Jingles..." she said in a hushed tone. She then looked over at Delphi, who responded with a sweet, gentle smile. Maybe nothing would change. But it wasn't all bad that things stayed the same. Afterall, that meant these two friends were ever unchanging, always there. And that was something she could be happy about, always. =============== 160 words

"Of course, Denali! Anytime. After all, the balloons are replaceable!" Say that to yourself again, Jingles... The balloons are replaceable...replaceable... they are replaceable... Jingles thought, as she smiled from ear to ear at Denali. Jingles knew it was going to be a difficult adjustment, though it seemed like it was going well so far on the outside... but on the inside, she was panicking. How am I going to keep this up? What if I change my mind in the next few days? Weeks? Months? Years? Oh my gosh... time is indefinite... Can I go back on a new years resolution? Jingles wondered if her doubt and nervousness showed on her face. Is anyone noticing? "Ok, I don't think anyone noticed." Oh no! Jingles gasped. She had said that out loud. Did anyone notice what I just uh... said?? She looked around at Denali and Delphi. They weren't looking. They must not have noticed, Jingles thought, as she took a sigh of relief. I wonder what they have planned for today! I did come early, right... a uh, little early... heh... Maybe they want to go back to sleep? Jingles peered out the window. The sky was getting brighter, but it was still blue. Maybe another hour or two until sunrise. Then Jingles let out a yawn. "Oh, excuse me! I guess I'm still sleepy." Jingles said as her eyelids started getting heavy. "I, uh, I'm just going to rest my eyes a little bit.. but yeah, let's celebrate together, ok? Today is going to be a glorious day... the weather.. *yawn* seems like it's great today, too...." Her voice trailed off, as she made herself comfortable, and drifted off to sleep.
