At the start of the year, everything looked brighter and better to Diego's eyes. Snow on th ground seemed to sparkle in the sunlight. The bits tucked in to crooks of tree branches looked soft. Cold, but soft, be imagined. And the mare he fancied, the one who had his heart. looked as crisp and beautiful as the world around her. This, the bright whites and soft blues of winter, suited her so well, it made his heart swell. And, he hoped, his little surprise would do the same for her. He'd been pushing a bit of snow around with his hoof for a while and now, at last, he'd gotten the effect he wanted, so he called, "Hope? Come and see what I found." (wc=133)

Precious Hope had given up all for love. Then she was denied that love. Then she thought she wouldn't love again. Not that she wasn't willing. Her heart was guarded and cautious.
Standing with the wind blowing over her, Hope is lost in thought. Even though she is sure she loves Diego, she had never spoken those three words. Part of her expected something to not work out if she did. Even though it's been months since she had been with Diego.
He calls to her, and she looks over her shoulder at him. Her heart warming just at the sight of him. A smile and a breathy laugh produces a white puff of condensation in the air. Look at him. Of course she loved him, and she was sure he knew it as well.
Her hooves crunch in the snow as she turns and goes over to him. A braid blows back from the wind. Hope fluffs up her feathers and pins her wings to her sides for warmth.
"Hi Diego." She says with a smile. Even though she had been with him all morning, she still liked to greet him. Acknowledging his presence beside her as often as she could.

There's no question in Diego's mind about how he feels about Hope. His Hope. His whole world. He'd traveled alone and lived alone for so long that he'd been half convinced that was how the whole of his life would go. He believed that he would live and then he'd leave the world on his own. Then he found her. Saying the words out loud always lingered in the back of Diego's mind, but he knew that she'd been hurt before, that she was a little afraid of that last step, so he hadn't pushed. When the time was right. And maybe that was now. Well. Not right now. Right now was the time to show her what he'd made for her. All right, found, but it was as if he'd, made it. He'd been hoping for something special to give her, and whuffling around in the snow, he and nature had worked together to produce something beautiful enough to suit her. As she exhales a little puff of visible air, Diego is reminded that it is, in fact, c9ld, and when she's close enough, stretches out his own wing wo drape over her back, the better to share his warmth. "Hi," he answers, giving her mane a fond nuzzle before he draws her attention back to the little treasure in the snow. "Look." At their hooves there lies a small delicate flower made of ice and clinging snow. It is, really, several smaller pieces pushed together to make a flower-like shape, all glittering and sparkling in the sun. "It's an early flower," Diego boasts. "The first flower of a brand new year with you." (WC=410)

Precious Hope turns and walks through the puffy white blanket on the ground. Her hooves crunching in the snow with a muffled sound. "What is it?" She asks as she stands beside him and nestles under his wing.
She looks down at what he had to show her. "Oh. Is it a flower? Did you make this?" She leans in to look at it.
The ice flower is delicate and mesmerizing, its petals formed from translucent, shimmering frost and I've pieces that Diego had placed rushed. Each petal thin, like a fine crystal, catching the light in a thousand subtle ways. The edges jagged, as if they had been carefully carved by the cold, giving them an intricate, almost lace-like texture with their unique shape.
It is fragile, a masterpiece of art, beautiful yet ephemeral.
The flower would melt if touched, the ice giving way to water in the warmth, but for now, it stood as a stunning, frozen testament to the love Diego has for her.
"I wish I could keep it." She says, misty eyed at the sweet gift. "I think I'll keep you, instead." Hope beams at him from under the warmth of his wing. She nips at his chin, and then places her forehead against his neck.
The world may be dormant, with bare trees that stretch skeletal hands to the sky. Yet in her heart, it feels like Spring is in bloom. "Thank you. It's beautiful" She says with a soft laugh.

Diego was all but holding his breath, waiting for her to see the delicate flower. To see what her reaction might be. It was true that this gift, as hard as he'd worked to make it happen, was fleeting and it wouldn't last. That could have been a huge disappointment. His greatest fear was disappointing her, givinng her sone reason to walk away from him or seek companionship from some other stallion. He'd lost what he thought was his happy ever after once before. He couldn't do it again, he thought. He wouldn't let that happen. But words matter abd hers are sweet. I think I'll keep you instead.. Oh, how they go straight to his heart and make it swell with love. The n** to his chin makes him chuckle quietly, and he bends his head over hers, another attempt to keep yer close and warm and safe. "This flower might not last, but I'll make you another when it goes and another. And when the real flowers bloom, I'll find you as many as you want. You might ask me to stop," he teases, " because there will be flowers up to your knees. As many as you want," he says again. "For as long as we have. You can keep me. I don't want to be anywhere else but buy your side." This would be a new tradition, he decided on the spot. From now on, at the start of every year. he would find someway to bring her a flower to make sure she knew that he was still happy to be with her, to share his life with her. Even if he had to make it hinself. "Maybe we can find somewhere " he offers with hope in his voice, "where the fields are full of flowers in spring and summer too. And autumn! In autumn, the trees will change and we can fly over then and watch the leaves shift and count how many colors we can see." He is being ridiculously sappy and ge knows it but he doesn't stop. He ever dares to say. "Maybe we can fly with our in little family, Hope. I'd like that. I'd like to have a family with you. I promise I'll take care of you all, forever, if you tell me that's what you want too." (wc=800)

They both had lost love. Though Hope had given her heart to someone that didn't give theirs in return. She knew it was foolish at the time. It did not stop her heart from doing what it wanted.
Now she thought her heart might burst! Diego gushing over her and offering to always give her flowers. It's not the gesture of flowers making her tingle. It's the kindness, and the love. Even though he had never said it, she knew on her very core how much he cared for her. The sensation had her eyes prickling. "Make sure to bring me some herbs as well! They might not be as pretty, but they are very useful." She teased back.
Her sweet stallion didn't stop there though. He went on to talk about family. This made her head snap up to look at him. Her face flushing red. Hope covers her face with a few long pinions from her wing. Her blush reaching up to her ears. "Okay, no limit to flowers, but can we absolutely have a limit to kids? I am not sure I want to share you with multiples!" She laughs nervously, trying to make light of all his poetic talk and speaking of a family. Before he can continue, she fluffs a wing at him. "Stop! You're making me blush!" She says playfully pushing her lips at him. "I'm going to melt all the snow with how hot my face feels. Don't look at me!" She says as she covers her face again and gives a little yelp. "Oh my gosh, how are you this sweet?" She says as she trots away, embarrassed.
Oh yeah. She couldn't love him more. And maybe real soon, she'd have to say those words. Even though she hadn't told him, she hoped he knew how much he meant to her. There is only him.
With him, forever, till the end. <3
