Quote: Cardinal Companion (14) : In the dismal whites and blues and greys of winter, the bright red splash of a cardinal is a welcome difference. It’s not uncommon to see birds out and about, and it’s easy to spot these especially after a fresh snow. Wild birds typically mind their own business and don’t really care about you–except, this one does. An unusually curious cardinal finds you the subject of interest in its day, and oddly enough–it feels familiar to you. You can’t explain it, but the moment your eyes land on it, it feels like coming face to face with someone dear to you. The cardinal isn’t afraid of you and feels comfortable enough to approach you, or maybe even land on you. Perhaps it’s even brought you some small gift. The more time you spend with it, the more you pick up on its unique habits, which seem to have an uncanny resemblance to someone you’ve lost. Sometimes the cardinal even smells of them, or has similar traits. The cardinal doesn’t ever stay for long but when it leaves there is an undeniable feeling that someone very important to you has paid you a visit.

Aurora was sitting out in the park she was bundled up and her mind was lost in thought, she had lost someone important to her not long ago and the pain was still fresh in her mind. One of her brothers had passed away and it had been a big shock to her family and caused a great deal of pain and strife to everything in her life. She had found herself fighting with her sister and her mother didn't even want to face the reality of what had happened all the magic in the world could protect her family from the choices one person had made.

She watched as birds flew around the park as they normally did, she looked at them thinking of myths that she knew well, her father had died years ago and someone had told her that cardinals were souls returning to visit the living. She took some comfort in that idea hoping her brother would somehow reach out to her. He had been so young and it killed her to think that he was gone forever. He was so creative and skilled as a mechanic. She only wished she had been able to find the right thing to say to save his life.
She blamed herself since she was older than him and felt that she had failed him as his older sister. She had pushed him away when he started lying and stealing from others. Blaming her for things that she could not have controlled. Still, Aurora felt like part of her heart had been cut from her chest more surely than a nega agent taking her star seed from her chest. She wasn't sure how to breathe knowing she had failed to save him when she had the strength to protect the rest of the city.

She had tears in her eyes as she watched the bird finally fly away, she wanted to keep the feeling forever and it did bring her comfort in a time when she thought her heart would never mend. She knew on some level that she couldn't have saved him and neither could anyone else. He was not willing to fight for his owe, unwilling to reach up and ask for help. She knew if only he had asked for help she would have moved mountains to help him get past the darkness he had found himself in. She would miss him for the rest of her days, the younger brother who perhaps never had a real chance at happiness.
