You have no idea who sent it, or what it might be. Is it something from an admirer, or possibly a bit more sinister?

[ Your character receives an unexpected gift. Feel free to answer this prompt exploring the thoughts around such thing, the suspicion or confusion, maybe even resolving it with finding out who the gift giver was. Maybe it's someone you know, but it's a surprise. Maybe it's a mistake. The only way to find out is to open the present. ]

Beowulf had been traveling through Matori, learning what he could from the libraries that he could find. Listening to the people that moved around him. While he had yet to speak to someone, anyone about the things he wanted to learn. He was at a bit of a loss. He wasn’t too sure as to what he was going to do. Frowning to himself, Beowulf sat at one of the few outdoor diners. He had ordered something to eat and now sat waiting for it. While he was waiting he had his book open to one of the few empty pages it had left.

”I am going to have to get a new book soon. If I am to continue this stuff I am doing.” He muttered as he dragged a thin piece of charcoal over the page.

As he deftly drew the lines on the page a young teen popped up at his elbow. ‘Package for you sir.’ They said holding up the brown paper covered item.

”Excuse me?” Beowulf said in surprise. ”You sire?” He asked not yet taking the package.

‘Sure am. The sender told me what to look for.’ the teen said with a bright smile, ‘Will you receive the package? I have more that needs to be delivered.’

Beowulf blinked a moment before, hesitating on taking the package. He was unsure and was told once before to not take strange things from other people. Still, this seemed to be sent to him and the sender knew him? This puzzled the Yaeli even more, reaching out as he took the package from the teen.

”Thanks.” He said simply watching the teen disappear through the throngs of people. ”Just who would send something to me? I haven;t really made myself known to those around here..” He puzzled setting the wrapped gift on the table he sat at.

Beowulf just sat there staring at the package, his own sketchbook of sorts laid forgotten before him. The charcoal laid in the binding. He had even forgotten that he had ordered something from the diner. It was only when the waitress came with his meal did he come back to reality.

‘Here’s your meal, just let me know if there is anything amiss.’ she said kindly before tucking her tray beneath her arm and walking in another direction to help another customer.

”Alright.” Beowulf said, shaking his head. His vibrant purple hair tousled as he did so. He looked down at the eggs and hash he had ordered. It was light and something he could travel on. He would also have to gather other supplies when moving from Matori and into Oba. ”There is still that.” He looked pointedly at the package.

The waitress came back around to fill his glass with more chilled water. ‘Everything alright?’ She asked as she smiled down at the Yaeli.

”Hm? Oh everything was great.” Beowulf commented as he picked up his plate and handed it back to the waitress. ”I am just still puzzled on who might have sent me that.” He pointed towards the package that laid harmlessly on the table.

‘Hm?’ she looked at the package as she took his plate. ‘Who knows, an answer inside the package. Can always open it and find out.’

Beowulf just shook his head, he had very little intention of opening the package. But the waitress had been right. Perhaps he should just buck up and open it. Giving another smile at the waitress that seemed to be waiting to see what he would do. ”Perhaps, guess there is only one way to find out.”

Reaching over, he picked up the wrapped package and started untying the string that wrapped around it. As the string and paper fell away, inside was a book that looked like someone went way out of their way to get. The bright leather cover felt soft as velvet in his hands. The pages inside were stark white unlike his current book that was yellowed with a lot of use. The sketches inside were those he did with a very practiced hand.

‘A book?’ the waitress questioned as she leaned a little closer to get a better look.

”I have been thinking of getting a new one. Just, not this lavish.” Beowulf frowned a little as he turned to book over in his hands. ”Someone must have paid a months wages to get something like this one.”

‘That someone must know you really wanted a new book.’ The woman commented before taking a step back. ‘Well if there is anything else I can do, just let me know.’

”Thanks, but I think I am finished.” He slipped both books into his satchel, ”I will be headed out. Thanks for the food.”

Leaving money on the table for the meal, Beowulf gave a bit of a smile before walking away. Not looking back, Beowulf pulled out the new book and flipped open the front cover. Inside there was a note from his teacher. Reading it he smiled before putting the book away, seems even now she was still looking out for him.
