“Evan Harper? Michael Gallo,” he introduced himself gently, holding out his hand to politely offer a handshake to the young man who greeted him at the door.

It had only been a couple minutes since he’d texted Evan to ask if they could meet up about Riker. He let Evan know he was one of Riker and Julian’s teachers, but also the father of one of their mutual friends. He knew it was a weird request to meet with him out of the blue, and Riker had already warned Michael that Evan would probably freak out if he knew he’d been hurt.

So, in an attempt to not give Evan too much time to get his heartrate up with worry, Michael waited for confirmation that Evan was at home before making his way to the front door.

“Riker will be okay,” he quickly prefaced, as if he could see the anxiety as a physical thing in Evan’s eyes. “He was hurt, but we’re taking care of him. He wanted to stay here if you’ve got space available. Otherwise we could offer him a place to stay while he recovers.”

He didn’t dare mention anything about the war while they were standing in the doorway.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 01, 2024 6:17 pm

Evan’s mouth was dry. His heart was racing. Michael was on his doorstep and he didn’t know who he was, or why a teacher. Awkwardly, he’d reached out to accept the hand, and though he shook he didn’t seem to have much confidence in it.

He’d tried to stay calm during the introduction–because, why was one of Riker’s teachers coming to him? Was he supposed to cover for him? He would, he was ready to lie about anything.

Evan hadn’t had time to get dressed up or anything; he was in too-worn pants and an oversized sweatshirt and socks that thankfully matched but he felt so un-put together compared to Michael.

He wished his appearance was the worst thing he had to worry about.

Michael spoke, and Evan heard the words but he felt like he didn’t know what they meant. Of course Riker was going to be okay, why wouldn’t he be???

Had he–what, did he sprain an ankle? Maybe they were just playing baseball, right? …But no, Riker could have just called. Evan would have come to pick him up, there was no reason for dramatics. What–did he break a bone? Did he have a concussion? Appendicitis?

Why was Michael here and not Riker?

His phone was hot in his pocket and felt like it weight a thousand pounds. His hand twitched, like he was going to just call Riker and ask.

He couldn’t move.

Maxim had already been interested in a knock in the door, but now he was creeping closer with his tail low. He loved guests but even he could tell something was wrong.

“What do you–what do you mean hurt?” Evan asked, and while it was clear that he was trying to keep a civil, conversational tone, his voice descended into a sharp whisper. His lips were numb. He couldn’t feel his tongue. His heart rate had skyrocketed and he barely had enough wits to stand aside so Michael could let himself in.

The house was a little messy–partly decorated for Halloween, there were some unpacked boxes lying around. It was welcoming enough–clean, and safe, and it smelled like fresh bread. There were plenty of places to sit, even with some of the decor draped over the furniture.

Michael could see the panic growing, so once he was inside the house, and made sure the door was closed behind him, he pulled out a piece of paper to hand to Evan.

It was a bit more wobbly than it would have normally been, but Riker had obviously hoped to alleviate some concerns Evan might have had.

Hey, sorry but I’ll probably miss my next shift. Got hurt trying to do some dumb TikTok challenge. I told Mr. Gallo you know about all this. I promise I’m okay, just sore. Please make sure Julian doesn’t freak out. I was hoping to crash with him for a bit if that’s cool? See you soon.

It was signed with a stamp from Reims’ signet ring, but with no name to address the note, it hadn’t been sent to Evan. But that had been by design.

Having already read the note, Michael let out an exasperated sigh, but he held out the back of his right hand to show Evan the ring he wore -- it looked like a normal ring, but anyone who knew, he expected to know.

“Sessrumnir of Jupiter,” he reintroduced himself, quieter than before. “Reims had an encounter with a Captain. He’s at my Wonder now. The springs there have some healing properties.”

It would have been easy for Evan to panic. It would have been nice to just black out and not think. He couldn’t have expected the worst if that was the case. He couldn’t have worried if he was unconscious.

He had the letter in his hands but it took him an embarrassingly long time to actually read it. He kept jumping around and struggling to piece the words together.

Riker was making a joke, though, right? He was okay enough that he could joke.

No, he was not okay, because he was joking.

Evan’s chest hurt and Maxim shoved his way between Evan’s legs and sat down on him roughly, not so much that it hurt Evan or knocked him off balance but enough that he had to lower the paper to look at the dog, who stared up at him with big eyes.

“Oh,” he said dully, and it took him a few seconds to realize he should introduce himself, too. “Oh, hi. Malus, Senshi of Glass.” He was quiet, not out of secrecy but because he was already visibly frazzled.

“How bad is it? I mean–of course, he can stay here. He and Julian–” he looked towards a door, as if he expected Julian to appear any second, and then back to Michael quickly. “They’re good friends. But how bad is it, really?”

He had no intention of keeping anything from Evan, but Michael was doing his best to not dump everything on him all at once. Especially with how upset he already looked.

“Riker obviously trusts you to act as his guardian, so I’m not going to sugar coat this,” he warned, his expression kind but it was obvious that he took this very seriously.

“The worst wound he received was a broken wooden handle into his abdomen,” Michael explained, indicating where on his own body.

“It was such a unique wound that we didn’t feel it wise to go directly to a hospital, so we brought him to my Wonder instead. My son, Atticus -- a friend of Riker and Julian -- has healing magic he was able to use while we worked to stabilize him. My husband and Riker’s friend, who was with him during the fight, were both able to donate their blood to him. He lost a lot,” he cautioned, making sure he didn’t need to stop and explain anything before continuing.

“His heart did stop for a brief period of time, but we were prepared for the possibility and were able to revive him,” he said quietly, watching for any signs that Evan might need to be helped to sit down.

“We didn’t want to draw attention for us all being gone, so my husband is with him now while the rest of us came back here. He’s in good hands. I’d trust Devyn with the lives of myself and everyone I love,” he promised, because he knew if his son or husband or future son-in-law was at some strange person’s Wonder, he’d want as many reassurances and guarantees as possible.

He could have sugar coated it a little.

Evan shifted his weight frequently, back and forth. Maxim made it hard for him to move, so it at least kept him a bit grounded. He felt dizzy hearing about a wooden handle into his abdomen, about losing so much blood it took two people to donate, about his heart stopping.

Pale and dizzy, Evan stopped moving. The room was spinning a little. He knew he had to focus because he wasn’t doing anyone any favors by freaking out.

Riker was alive, and healing, and somewhere safe.

“So he’s up on Jupiter right now? I don’t know anyone from Jupiter. Do I?” he shook his head but that was a mistake. “Oh, I wish you were a Saturn Knight, I know plenty of them.” He wanted to see Riker. He knew it was impractical. Michael was so calm. It should have brought him reassurance–it did–but Evan dreaded every little thing that could go wrong.

“Is he going to be okay? He’s not going to have some health scare up there, right? If something happens–if he needs to be at a hospital, you already have a plan?”

Evan was fixed on Michael, and Maxim was fixed on Evan, so neither of them noticed Soleiyu as he entered the room. At first, he seemed like he must have come from the garage, and he trotted towards the kitchen only to pause when he saw Michael standing in the doorway.

He froze, like a deer in headlights; his fur stood on end and his tail shot straight up. For a few seconds, he stayed like that, and then he rapidly relaxed. He sat down right there, obviously eavesdropping, even if he feigned needing to stop and groom his paw.

“He’s being monitored. Devyn knows what to keep an eye out for. If it looks like he’s starting to get an infection or starts getting a fever, he’ll bring him back here. But the waters there have a lot of beneficial properties for healing. He should be okay, but we’re being cautious,” he explained.

“Besides, we have the best equipment up there. All Mauvian modified for efficiency,” he hummed, having absolutely seen Soleiyu out of the corner of his eye. But it wasn’t as though he hadn’t planned on praising the Mauvian’s innovation and helping them get equipment figured out ever since they had the scare with Atticus.

“Do you need to sit down?” he asked gently, holding out a hand as though ready to catch Evan if he lost his balance. “Sorry, I only know one Saturn Knight. I’ll introduce you to some Jupiter Knights sometime. Especially if our kids are going to be hanging out a lot.”

Michael paused and pressed his lips together. Having adopted Atticus it was easy to fit anyone into the role of parent, especially when the child trusted them.

“Sorry, I know he’s not really yours.”

Honestly, Evan felt sick. He found himself nodding just to give Michael some sort of reaction but it wasn’t until a few seconds later that he even realized what he was saying.

“No, he’s mine,” he said. It made sense in his head but he realized Michael didn’t exactly have context for the thoughts swirling around. Evan was quick to clarify, as much as he could, “I mean–you don’t have to apologize for him. I’d like to look out for him, if I can.”

He didn’t know what Michael knew about Riker’s mother, or the rest of his family. Evan didn’t plan on telling him anything anyway.

Evan probably should have sat down but his knees weren’t really bending. It felt like his feet were attached to heavier weights than just Maxim sitting on them. Soleiyu’s eyes squinted at Michael, and his curiosity was too much for him to stay sitting far away. He leapt onto the back of the couch and sat at the end of it, just a bit behind Evan. He had never been shy about being nosey.

“How long is he going to have to stay up there, do you know? We can get–I’ll get something ready for him. Julian–well, he already spends the night with Julian sometimes, I’m sure–oh, but that’s upstairs. We–we’ll figure something out. Can you tell him yes, of course, he can stay here? No–tell him we want him here. No–I mean, yes, tell him that, but–can you tell him…I don’t know, none of it sounds right. Can you please tell him that I’m glad he’s okay, so come home soon?”

Michael gave Evan a curious look when he said that Riker was his, but he didn’t question it. If anything, he was glad that Riker had an adult he could confide in, especially since he seemed to be defiant with most, if not all, of the teachers at school. Not that Michael blamed him. He’d seen his mother at games.

“Here, why don’t you sit down,” he suggested, not looking at Soleiyu, but he was obviously in his peripheral. Michael didn’t touch Evan, but he took a step towards the couch and held out his arm to gesture for Evan to take a step away from the spot he was glued to on the floor.

“I want to keep him there for the rest of the weekend, but he’s already tried to convince us that he was okay. Very stubborn. Very resilient. He was worried about you being upset. He said you’d start calling every hospital in the city if he didn’t show up for his shift. He’s eager to come home,” he promised. Finally, he glanced over at Soleiyu with a small nod. Maxim got a small smile as well.

“Those modified first aid devices came in handy. We’ll have to see about producing more so we can get them into safe places in case of emergencies.” Avoiding the hospitals, especially since Ganymede discovered the Negaverse had at least one doctor in their ranks, was in everyone’s best interest.

Evan let himself be ushered to the chair. When he stared moving, Maxim sat up but stayed glued to his side.

“Sorry,” he said, thinking he must look very silly to Michael right now. He couldn’t help it, he was worried. Riker was too important to him, he was too young to have his heart stop. “He’s right, I would have gotten upset. I would have called all of them.”

He wouldn’t have rested until he had answers.

“I know some people with healing magic,” he offered, but he wasn’t sure how useful that would be. Riker was healing now, and by the time he came back to Destiny City, would it be worth it to walk him out somewhere private just so someone could power up to heal him? –And what happened if they were attacked while he was already injured? Oh, he didn’t know.

As Evan sank onto the couch, he gestured vaguely to another chair, offering Michael to sit down if he wanted. Soleiyu remained perched over Evan, but he seemed only slightly smug.

The praise was welcome, but it didn't feel like a time to celebrate.

“You’ll have to give me a run down of what happened. I’ll take notes to improve.”

Evan inhaled sharply when Soleiyu spoke, because he hadn’t even seen him there. The confusion set in quickly and he turned to face him, squinting inquisitively.

Soleiyu just shrugged. “I’m very busy. I have a lot of friends.”

“Oh, so you know…?” he gestured vaguely to Michael.

“Yes, of course. Was anyone else hurt?” he asked, craning his head to look up at Michael. He spoke as if they were eye level.

“The other Ganymede knight he was with -- Yvoire -- had minor injuries. Turns out Ganymede and the Mauvian bonded to her -- Lucasta -- were in the area and were able to force the Captain to retreat,” he shared with Soleiyu as he took a seat only once Evan was sitting. He knew a lot of this was probably new to Evan, so he wanted to help by offering any names that might help him put the pieces together, while also trying to respect everyone’s privacy.

“Soleiyu helped us when my son -- Atticus -- was in some trouble. Before we adopted him.”

It wasn’t the first time Soleiyu had helped them. But Michael didn’t want to think about how he ended up getting his father killed by not finishing Jet off when he had the chance.

“I don’t want to be in your hair for too long. But if you need any help getting things set up for Riker, I’m more than happy to lend a hand,” he said, because he knew it would be difficult especially if Julian’s room was upstairs.

“I’ll give you all the details later, don’t worry,” he nodded to Soleiyu, glad to see the Mauvian again.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 01, 2024 7:19 pm

The names were mostly foreign to Evan, who did his best to remember them but all of his energy was mostly spent on trying to stay calm and not freak out about Riker. Soleiyu nodded understandingly though, so Evan knew he could just ask him later.

Maxim briefly wandered over to Michael, sniffing at his knees, wagging, and brushing against him. His attention was mostly on Evan, who was now taking careful, slow breaths, just in case his body forgot to do it itself.

Soleiyu nodded along with Michael’s words. There was a time for that later, and understandably everyone had something else on their mind. If they were lucky, they could go a few days without worrying about someone else needing critical life-saving care.

“We’ll make a plan and I’ll let you know,” Soleiyu promised, but his eyes flicked to the front door and his ear twitched. Zac pushed open the door a second later. He wore something of a scowl but little effort was put into it, that was just his face.

He was seeking out Evan immediately but found Michael instead.

There was an unfamiliar car in the driveway, and it was unusual for Evan to have none of the locks done on the front door.

But then, he’d have already known something was gone without either of those things.

Under one arm, feet dangling towards the ground, he carried Lucien in with him.

“This your cat?”

Michael wasn’t ignoring Maxim, but he was cautious around him. He seemed like a good dog, so Michael tried not to be too tense around him.

Thankfully, his attention was pulled when Soleiyu looked up to the door. Michael followed his gaze, and when another young man with Lucien under his arm entered, Michael stood up so he could greet him.

“That’s Lucien,” he said as he politely held out his hand. “Michael Gallo. I’m one of Julian and Riker’s teachers. And father of one of their friends,” he introduced.

And while he suspected that this man knew about the war and was likely part of it himself, Michael didn’t dare say anything without confirmation.

The lazy flick of Lucien’s tail made it seem like he was on the same page, despite seeing Soleiyu there on the couch.

“Cool,” Zac said with no enthusiasm. He wasn’t here to impress anyone, not while he didn’t know what was going on. He hadn’t forgotten all of his manners, so he reached out to give Michael a firm handshake. He didn't put Lucien down, though Maxim invited himself over so he could eagerly sniff at the cat. His nose was quickly lost in the fur of Lucien’s underbelly, so Zac lifted the Mauvian just a bit higher and out of reach.

Maxim was polite enough not to jump up but he sat down expectantly and stared up at the him.

“Zac,” he introduced. “What are two you doing here?”

Michael was not deterred by the lack of enthusiasm. Zac had come into a scene where there were now two Mauvians, a frazzled Evan, and someone he didn’t know. Oh, and Maxim, who was about to get a kick in the face for tickling Lucien’s underbelly if Zac hadn’t lifted him up higher.

“Figuring out arrangements for Riker to stay here while he recovers. He was--”

There was a pause in which he cast Evan an apologetic look before continuing.

“Gravely injured. Stable now, but his legal home isn’t particularly conducive for rest and healing. He said he felt more comfortable staying here, with whoever's permission he needs.”

He’d obviously asked Evan, but given the way Zac was holding himself, he seemed more likely to be the actual homeowner.

“Otherwise, I can have him stay with me.”
