If Velek had known it would be this cold, he might not have let himself be whisked away by the strange light he’d seen from Valeska. Even powered up, he felt the biting chill through his uniform.

His homeworld was devoid of life–a barren landscape where even the most stubborn of plants withered and wilted under the barrage of acidic rain.

Never in his wildest dreams could he have conjured the vibrant, loud, living city before him. But neither could he conjure the energy to function, either.

Adrenaline had powered him through the first few moments but he realized quickly that it was night–true night. The clouds that blanketed the sky hid the stars from him, though he didn’t know if he’d have been able to read them anyway.

He was used to rain.

He was not used to snow.

The colder it got, the less he functioned, and yet he found himself standing transfixed.

Valeska did not know where he was. This was not his world.

The distant city noises were strange to him and even if he knew what was making them, he would not have known what they meant. He did not understand the lights–their source or meaning. Purpose, sure, but there were so many colors and in such great volume that it looked like it was reflecting off the clouds themselves.

The park behind him was full of life, even in the throes of late fall. All trees were plentiful with leaves, though some had simply lost them to the ground below. He could smell flowers in the chilly air. He could smell fresh cut grass.

Perhaps the most interesting thing of all of them was the energy signatures flitting about on the outskirts of his radar.

But the cold had set in already, and his thinking was slow and his responses were slower. An inch of snow had gathered around him, building up on his shoulders and head.

He was so cold that it was hardly even melting on him anymore.

He thought he heard something behind him, and he certainly felt an energy signature, but the reality of such a possibility seemed so distant that it didn’t even occur to him it might be anything more than his imagination.

It was not often that Monoceros ventured out. When he did, it was even less often that he encountered one of the mysterious alien senshi. He knew they were out there, of course, but meeting one? No, that was usually best left to someone who knew what they were doing.

But tonight, in the snow and the cold and the dreariness, he felt the signature of someone new. He made a beeline for them, hoping he could get there before someone from the Negaverse did.

"Hey!" he called out once he spotted them, relief flooding his body when he realized they were alone. "Hey, it's not safe to be alone out here."

The language was familiar, but foreign. Often, Valeska heard the shadows of conversations dancing just out of reach. The only voice he’d heard in a long time was his own, and he spoke in his native tongue. Not the common tongue shared throughout the universe.

He half-turned, brows furrowed in consternation. It was easy to assume that this was some dreamscape–some make-believe city with phantom apparitions drifting in from nowhere.

But Valeska did not dream. Not like this.

He approached, slowly, and stared at Monoceros–squinted, to see him better, and when he was close enough he reached out a hand and fanned the air as if he meant to scatter the ghost before him.

The senshi did not dissipate when Valeska’s fingers brushed over his chest, and then when he tried to wave away his face, Valeska felt only warmth.

He pressed the flat of his palm against Monoceros’ face–his warm face–and frowned.

Valeska’s touch was icy, and like the rest of him was already half frozen.

Words did not come quickly, a poor combination of misuse and chill, but he managed a worn, “Here?”

For all the effort it took him to process the words felt like it should have covered more. It just wasn’t easy to string together words from a language you hadn’t heard in–well, he didn’t know, really. That seemed like another good question to ask, if only he could find the words to inquire.

Monoceros stopped, slightly confused, when the alien senshi rached out and awkwardly touched his chest. Okay. That was... weird. Maybe expected, though—perhaps the guy thought he saw a ghost? Then his hand was on Monoceros's face and he flushed a bright red, freckles standing out even more than usual against the background of his embarrassment in his cheeks.

He reached up and pressed his hand to the senshi's, reaching out with his free hand to take the other. The poor thing was frighteningly cold. 'Ceros needed to help him. Badly.

"Okay. I'll take it slow," he said gently, realizing the problem. The guy probably struggled with the English language, as well. Especially if he only knew the version from a thousand years ago.

"Come with me. It will be warm and safe in my home," he said, making sure to enunciate each word delicately and separately from each other. "It's dangerous out here."

Valeska squinted again at Monoceros, like he was studying him intently. There was no animosity in his expression, it wasn’t one borne of frustration or annoyance. Just curiosity.

The senshi’s hand was as warm as his face. He was beckoned, yet found himself without much desire to move. Realistically, he knew he was cold. The chilly winter night was mind numbing. He could feel it slowing his thoughts, freezing them altogether.

He was struggling to find the energy or willpower to push through it.

But this senshi before him was warm. And he offered more warmth.

It could have been a trap. It could have been dangerous.

But so was the snow, and the unknown of this strange world.

‘Safe’ and ‘warm’ were very good selling points.

Valeska nodded, though there was little effort put into the gesture. It was hardly any easier than speaking.

“Where?” he asked–and, since Monoceros was already offering warmth, he stepped close enough that they were practically chest to chest and–oh, he was so warm.

Monoceros could feel just how cold the guy was—no doubt, the snow was terrible for him. He was way too tempted to pull the guy into a hug and warm him from there, but he knew he had to get his fellow senshi inside. But he was so close... Monoceros couldn't even breathe without touching the other senshi now. He shivered, though not from the cold.

"Thank you for trusting me," he said quietly. "It's not far, thankfully. But we need to power down to make sure nobody spies on us. There are enemies lurking. We'll get you some soup, too, warm you up."

“Power down?” he challenged, but there was little bite in his words. He seemed suspicious and squinted at Monocoreos briefly, once more assessing if he was a phantom trying to mislead him.

No, no wraith, no ghoul, could ever have such a kind voice and be so warm.

Valeska was not on his world. He was not dead, either.

He didn’t know the rules here.

The offer of soup was tempting, and warmth even more so. Trusting did not come easily, but he was so tired, and so cold.

And there were enemies lurking.

It was with great reluctance, and a bit of sluggishness, that Valeska complied. He wore more layers now but without the magic of his uniform he was more susceptible to the cold. His hands disappeared into the long sleeves of his robes and he crossed his arms over his chest. His teeth were still quick to chatter and he pressed close to Monoceros instinctively. He was still warm, and Valeska was unwilling to pry himself from his side.

He wanted to get out of the cold as quickly as possible and that seemed to mean walking. If he didn’t get a move on, he might just freeze to this spot, soon. “Where?”

Monoceros let himself become Robin and immediately removed his winter coat. It would be too large in the middle and too short on Valeska's torso, but it was already warm from his own body heat and it would hopefully keep his new friend warm enough to get home safe.

"This way. I've got you," he said softly as he tucked the coat over Valeska's shoulders.
