After the night of the explosion, Oliver had been having trouble sleeping. At first, it was the thought of Jack causing Ophelia so much harm but after the cold man told him the events that actually transpired that night, Oliver didn’t know what to think. The prince knew Syena was never really fond of him but now he had proof and was furious. Unsure what to say, almost a week had gone by after he found out what had happened, and he still never talked to the pink-haired beauty about what had happened after her initial confession. Oliver knew the incident was his fault, the least he could do was try and make things right.

Nothing made sense, Syena was never violent to people outside the family so why hurt Ophelia unless it was meant as a message to him? And why call her a slut? Oliver had never implied such a thing so what was he doing trying to make him look bad? Normally, his brother was all about maintaining a good image for his kingdom, it didn’t make sense for him to try and do this other than to piss Oliver off. And if that was the plan, it worked. Oliver had never wanted to hurt his brother badly in his life.

It was all coming back to him and there wasn’t their mom to act as a buffer for the two. No longer was her voice there to try and explain Syena’s comments or actions away. In Oliver’s eyes, there was no good reason for Syena to have done this and he needed to be taught a lesson. Oliver knew he wasn’t a great fighter but he had been learning more and more each day at the academy. He even knew a few kicks from their combat class that he could use to defend himself if he needed. But deep down, Oliver hoped it wouldn't come to exchanging blows and that his words would be enough to reach the man.

Reaching Syena’s door wasn’t much of a journey, it was only a few doors down from Oliver’s. Knocking on the door, however, was a different beast. If he knocked too hard, Syena would accuse him of trying to wake up the whole hall. But if he didn’t knock loud enough, his brother might not wake up at all, it was fairly late after all. He hoped that if anything Syena would respect that he was trying to respect his privacy at the very least. It was not that Oliver really cared about Syena's thoughts of him anymore. Taking a deep breath, he knocked twice on the door and waited for his brother.

The biggest hurtle of this damned school was finding the time to do his job. Every day it was expected that he get up, go to classes, socialize with these neanderthals, and still find time to read reports, pen missives with his opinions, calculate the best course of action for the kingdom now that there was peace. If day to day life in the middle of the war had been bad, this might have been a new fresh hell that the gods had cooked up for him. Why else would they have forced him away from his duties? Syena's kingly father hadn't actually run the kingdom in years. Leaving him behind to act as a steward? The very notion had left the eldest prince's skin crawling.

The prickle of stress danced across his lower back. The sensation becoming all too familiar these days as he sat at his desk late into the night pouring over the notes and messages the wind brought him. Lately his only solace was that he could easily travel back if something came up that was too dire for the royalty left in the capital to handle. He'd just spent the last hour pouring over the latest update. Now Syena's head was in his hands as he attempted to process the information. The restoration of the border cities was coming along nicely, but the grain harvests had been diminishing over the last several years and the current harvest had been less than his initial predictions. Without a solution there would be a winter famine. There had to be something he could think of, some new trade partner this school might be able to offer him. If only he could think-

The sound of knocking cut off his thoughts, frustration rolling into amusement. The only person who visited him this late was Anika. Gods he could use the distraction. Maybe, if they could talk about their kingdoms for fifteen minutes without sloppy kisses and their old letters getting in the way she would be able to offer him a solution. Yes. Standing, Syena made his way to the door to let her in. Surely if Musique had decent crops this year there would be a surplus they could trade. If Anika couldn't assist, there was always 'Ailana he could ask, but then that would require speaking to his fiancé. Which was becoming less and less desirable by the day.

As the door opened, any levity on Syena's face vanished. Colorless eyes took in Oliver, the determined look on the lost puppy's face apparent. The whelp had come here to say something, and at the very least letting him in wouldn't jeopardize the documents he'd left out on his desk. Leaving his door open for the baby bird to follow him in, he spoke. "And what is so important that it couldn't wait until morning, little brother?" There was no need to hide the venom in his voice as Oliver stepped into the room. It was only the two of them, after all.

It wasn’t out of the blue for Syena to welcome him with such an unwelcome tone, but he did seem more irritable than usual. Was it possible that Oliver had woken the man up? There were very few wrinkles in his look so the prince doubted it, there had to be something else peeving the man. If Oliver was in a better mood himself he would have cared enough to ask but instead he was feeling vengeful and full of rage.

Following the man into his room, Oliver tried not to feel too intimidated by him but it was hard knowing how behind he was in terms of ability. Still, if he didn’t stand up for himself now, he never would. And his brother had crossed a line, no matter how much he hated him there were no excuses for hurting Ophelia. The girl was innocent in their feud and the heir apparent knew of his deep feelings for her and still tried to lay his claim to her. Thankfully Ophelia had the sense to smack him and the Wild West wannabe was there to run her away just in time.

Waiting for the door to close behind him, Syena wasted no time in showing his true colors. It was shocking how comfortably the man was able to pretend he had any sort of feelings. The only semblance of a heart he had was the fact he had blood pumping out of his veins and he wasn’t like the zombies they had encountered the other night. Hearing the door close behind him Oliver readied his response, ” I came late as a courtesy for your need for privacy. I’d hate to confront you and for your mask to be revealed, dear brother.”

Looking at Syena’s desk he noticed the piles of paper on the desk behind him. There was the Windurian seal as well. Had he been corresponding with their parents? Oliver had received letters from their mother wishing him and the others well but nothing official looking like that. ' What in the world is he doing so late? Extra credit for our father no doubt.' He was sure if he examined them any closer they were bound to be some secret training regime or hidden advice their father was bestowing onto him. While their mother had always made an effort to love each of them equally, it was clear who their father loved more. Oliver wasn’t even sure his father loved him. He was only chosen because his sister had been taken and his mother was the one that had picked him.

It was no matter, complaining about their father wasn’t the reason he had dropped in tonight. If Syena was going to act like Oliver was the inconvenience then why waste his time? ” I came here tonight to ask just why you would do something so awful to someone you don’t even know. What in the worlds have I ever done to you that could be so terrible?" His eyebrows furrowed as he thought about it. This whole situation was peeving him the more he thought about it.

His whole life Oliver had done nothing but be kind to his brother and this is how he repaid him? Why was Oliver seemingly being punished for just existing? It was like the world was rooting against him and using Syena as one of their pieces to make sure he was miserable. But tonight was the night he would put it to an end, ” Why can’t you just let me be happy?”

Sometimes it was impressive. Oliver truly was something. Just how had his mother managed to pick the most annoying little brat she could find to become his brother after Liu'en had been stolen? Or was it his mother's coddling that had made the sniveling brat what he was today? Syena supposed he would never know the answer to that question. Maybe it was better that he didn't. Regardless, it pounded behind his eyes as he seated himself back down at his desk to try to go back over some of his paperwork while dealing with whatever warranted this interruption.

Oliver's gaze trailing over the papers before him was not lost on Syena. Oh how it must have felt to let the reality of Winduria's rule these last sixteen years to sink in. If the man wasn't so daft that he couldn't figure it out, that was. There was no effort in hiding it. If Oliver wished to steal any information and leak it to his little side piece, then the heir apparent would know where the leak started and who to eliminate to protect his kingdom. Though that would mean he would have to understand what he was looking at.

On second thought, that may be too big a task for the second prince.

The question of what the sorry excuse for a brother had ever done to him made Syena pause. Looking up from his work he set a hard stare on the tanned man before him. Bringing a hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose, the grain issue would have to be pushed to the back burner while he dealt with this... unwelcome guest. One who happened to be angry for some perceived slight and demanding to know why Syena couldn't just 'let him be happy' like the world was some fairytale where everything went well all of the time if you just believed hard enough.

"Forgive me, I thought you had a brain rattling around in there between your ears." When he finally did speak, it was as if frustration had finally snapped within him. This entire conversation was beneath him. If they had been at home Oliver never would have made it this far. Their mother knew what she had done, regardless of if she chose to acknowledge it. It was why she had never pressed Syena to accept his new brother. No, normally he would have been stopped before he could make it to the door. Pulled away before such bullshit could sully the precious air.

But here there was no mother protecting the nuisance she had brought into the palace. No father over his shoulder asking him to play nice for his mother's sake. Maybe this was a blessing, under the guise of a curse. Finally the pebble in his shoe could know his place. "For thirteen years I have forgiven my parents for the slap to the face that adopting you was. I have watched my own mother coddle you, protecting you from the horrors of the world while I have gone out to fight in a war like a pawn to die. I have held my tongue and quietly completed my work without complaint." Letting his hand drop from his face, Syena slammed his fist into the desk.

When he finally raised his head to meet his "brother's" gaze, there was a burning fury behind his eyes. Too many years of anger and frustration were finally bubbling to the surface as he stood. Rounding the desk, Syena leaned against the front of the desk. "Now what, pray tell, have I done to jeopardize your so called happiness Oliver? If you are going to barge in here and interrupt my work, then give me a reason for it. Or am I to do that for you too?"

It was impressive how little time it took for Syena to start putting Oliver down. It was a miracle that Syena could tolerate being in the same room as him most days without finding something terrible to say about him. And Oliver put it up with it, his mother had always made excuses for Syena’s terrible treatment towards him about how hard he worked and how he did truly care for Oliver but the prince had had enough.

Oliver wished that his mother was here right now to see the way the heir apparent was talking to him. Talking all high and mighty about what a slap in the face it was for him to exist? Working without complaint? Oliver didn’t under what he was talking about, he would have killed to have had the opportunity to work more closely with his father like his brother had. The war was no joke and he didn’t envy his brother in that sense but had he been properly trained like Syena had Oliver was sure he would have been sent as well.

The more venom that the white-haired man spit out the more Oliver felt his body start to shake with frustration. This feeling of rage wasn’t new but Oliver had never felt it this intensely. Sure, Syena had upset him in the past when he had ignored him in the past or made some snide remark but this was different. It was baffling to the prince how this so-called future king failed to see his shortcomings. When Oliver heard from his friend about what had happened with Ophelia he couldn’t believe it but seeing this side of him once again he knew what Jack said had to be true.

A small bubble of fear formed when Syena’s fist pounded against the table, but Oliver knew he needed to stand strong, if not for himself but for Ophelia. She was innocent in all this and Oliver was sure the only reason Syena had tried to harm her that night was because of his feelings for her. The idea of what might have happened had the dark cowboy and Jack not interfered, was helping fuel his rage in this moment. ” You honestly fail to see why I am this upset I would come this late to speak to you?” His fingers were now curled up into a fist at his side.

Their mother wasn’t there to protect Syena anymore. Neither was their father with his disapproving stares nor looks. ” You know how I felt about her. But she was just some toy for you to play with and mess with me. But Ophelia’s not someone for you to paw your greedy disgusting hands on. I knew you hated me but I never knew you were capable of something so cruel.” Oliver sighed, deeply disappointed that he had to explain all of this to his brother. How hard was it to understand human decency? Kindness was too much of a challenge for him clearly, but Oliver didn’t realize until now that Syena would never learn.

Oliver's face felt hotter than ever as he thought about the two of them together. The idea of Ophelia pleading for Syena to stop as his nasty fingers tried to paw at her body. He had seen the marks on her neck, he could only imagine where else his brother had tried to grope that night. Given what Ophelia had said, Oliver knew there was more to the story than either of them would ever tell him and that just pissed him off. Especially because he knew that Syena had only done it because Oliver had made the mistake of telling his brother about his feelings for her to begin with.

” What if Jack wasn’t there huh? What would you have done? I know that you are not capable of love but that doesn't give you the right to try and steal mine from under me. As if she would have ever wanted to be with someone as cold-hearted and twisted as you are.” There it was, the straw that broke the camel’s back. Oliver had broken. Words could no longer express how upset he was. Not realizing what was happening he felt his fist swinging at his brother towards his face.

Being at this school had grown the little bird a backbone. Interesting. Unfortunately, just like everything else about Oliver, his newfound determination was sloppy. There was no actual research done, no understanding of what he was talking about. Just disgusting accusations. The idea of them were less and less appealing by the second. Sure, Syena had laid hands on the little duchess his brother seemed to covet. There was nothing beyond that. The bruises were meant to be a warning to his brother. One that he appeared to be too stupid to understand.

As the fist began to clumsily sail towards him, the heir to the throne easily dodged out of the way. Catching his false brother's wrist he twisted them so that Oliver's hand was trapped behind his back with Syena behind him. Then, with a firm hand to the back of his brother's head, he slammed the tanned man's face down into the paperwork he'd been mulling over.

"Since you seem to be too stupid to understand, let me spell out everything mommy's been hiding from you Oliver." Had their parents taught this fool nothing? His form was sloppy. That was not the punch of a man, but of a toddler trying to play keep-away. Though, in some way that was precisely what Oliver was trying to do. "See these? These are official documents from Winduria. Here, let me help you since reading appears to be difficult for you." Grinding the boy's cheek into the paperwork, Syena's eyes narrowed. "For the last sixteen years I have reviewed these documents, our mother's work as queen, and made the official decisions to keep our country running."

Something in him was snapping. This school seemed to be good for one thing and one thing only. It scratched down deep into the soul and dragged out the parts that were best kept hidden. "Over time, our father's work also slipped and I've come to help him with that. What thanks did I get? A little brother." The hand in Oliver's dark curls turned into a fist, yanking the boy off of the desk and throwing him back. "As if I hadn't given up enough already, a new little pretender was welcomed into the palace to paw at the crown I was already wearing in the shadows to make up for my parents slipping from the loss of Liu'en. Forgive me for not having it within me to love the child my parents replaced my sister with, who they loved more than I despite all of the work I have been doing for them in the name of 'family'."

With a level of practiced indifference, Syena unbuttoned his sleeve, rolling it up and out of the way. "I have no desire to bed that little tramp you hang around, it's beneath me. I don't know what your uncivilized little friend told you, but he was clearly seeing what he wanted to see. Or what he has done himself." Giving a pointed look to the riled up little prince before him, he continued with unbuttoning his other sleeve, rolling it up and out of the way.

Without warning, Syena threw his own fist at the owl before him. Either Oliver was more pathetic than he thought, or the fool had thought that Syena wouldn't be willing to hit him. "However," Another punch, this time to the second prince's gut. "It was a warning to the both of you. You already have a fiancé Oliver, or did you conveniently forget? If you dare ******** things up with Uilum after our mother fought to make you a king? Well, I can do far worse to you than this."

Outside of combat class, Oliver had never been in a fight before. The preprepared sparring was rather easy to follow along with for the most part but mostly because his partner had agreed to go slowly so that they could learn the moves together. But this was different. There was little time to think about what was happening as Syena swiftly dodged the moves and made his way towards him, quickly grabbing Oliver’s arm and twisting it behind him.

There was no time to scream or cry out, not when Syena’s sadistic rage had finally erupted. Even the air was hurting his lungs as his face was pressed against the desk. Oliver couldn’t even protest with the man for fear of what was to come next. Was his brother always this powerful? There was a metallic taste starting to fill his mouth, as Oliver contemplated whether or not his brother was deranged enough to kill him in this fit of rage. Syena had always managed to keep the cold comments to a minimum but, thanks to Oliver’s punch, it was all coming out tonight.

But none of it was making any sense, their parents, well their mother at least, had been so doting. There couldn’t be anything she needed to hide from them if they were struggling why wouldn’t they have asked the council for help instead of pinning the responsibility onto their offspring? Maybe it was just the smaller roles and chores in order to prepare Syena for the role of King but the crown prince was just getting a big head. That had to be it. Unfortunately, the other prince had snapped under the small amount of pressure placed upon him.

Feeling the cold prince’s nails start to twist his hair and pull it around, Oliver attempted to struggle to no avail, being sent to the floor with ease. Wiping his left hand across his face he looked down at the blood that was there as he responded to the gray-haired prince, ” I didn’t ask to be born you know. Or be adopted.” Despite being forever grateful to his adoptive mother and sister, moments like this made him question if he had been better off remaining at the orphanage. It was any moment that involved his brother that made him question this. He had never asked for any responsibility to be thrust upon him, nor had he requested ever to take on the throne. All he did was follow orders and what did that get him? A possible concussion and a bloody nose.

But Syena’s irrational rant didn’t end there moving onto Willow as Oliver attempted to pick himself off the ground, using one of the chairs in an attempt to support himself as the room still shook around him. ” Y-you’re not making any sense, Liu'en, I mean- Willow, she’s back and- His thoughts were cut off by the iron taste filling his lungs again. Oliver didn’t think he had hit the desk that hard, but he also couldn’t feel much of anything right now besides fear and rage for the man in front of him.

Too focused on trying to remain stable, his hand shaking as he attempted to grip the chair next to him he didn’t even notice his brother’s fist preparing to make contact with him until it was too late. ” I trust his words more than I trust anything you have said to-UGH” He grunted as Syena’s fist connected with his stomach. The first was enough for him to let go of the chair and try and shield his stomach but this just made it much simpler for the man to knock him back onto the floor with his second punch.

Looking up at the man, Oliver heard Syena’s loud and clear this time. If he wanted to keep Ophelia safe, the best thing he could do for her was leave her alone. Despite the shaking and fear he felt for his own safety, he could only think about how scared the pink-haired innocent must have felt when she had encountered Syena that night. He knew things would be easier that way but the rage in his beating heart made him want to continue fighting. Oliver coughed, spitting blood onto the man’s shoe before looking him dead in the eye, ” I didn’t forget brother, but, our mother will understand.” he whimpered, unsure as he spoke.

” What is your plan to keep me in line brother? Any more beatings and I’m sure to die and then neither of us will have the throne.” His voice still wavered as he spoke, scared of what was to happen next. Oliver wanted to believe that Syena’s tales were untrue but there was a part of him telling there had to be SOME truth behind the frigid man’s fury. He wanted to run but he could barely stand as Syena discussed doing much worse than he had already done. Unless he was willing to… but he wouldn’t. Their parents would be devastated but Syena didn’t seem to care much about anyone’s feelings besides his own. ” You can’t make me marry Lady Gwen or anyone for that fact. I-i’ll run away or worse, I’ll start a war and use Uilum's resources to make your life harder.”

With narrowing eyes Syena looked down his nose at the pretender his mother forced him to call brother. On the one hand, it was hard to say if he was truly just that stupid. But then, ignorance was bliss and it made sense that the little boy who had wormed his way into the Windurian royal family would rather bask in the lies that had been woven around him than believe the truth. The truth was never easy to swallow, so why try when it was easier to run back to the queen mother and beg for a kiss to make Oliver's royal booboos all better?

The disgust that radiated off of the crown prince was palpable. Tension rippling between them as he looked down at the crumpled owl coughing up blood onto his shoes. Thank the gods they were close toed. "Are you truly that naive? In what world does a princess stolen at three during the middle of a massive world war return to her family unharmed fourteen years later?" Pausing, he used the toe of his shoe to push at Oliver's cheek. Once the bleeding face was far enough away that he couldn't cough any more of his common blood onto Syena's shoes, the prince continued. "My queen mother is too gentle hearted to believe the truth. I don't know how that little tramp got Liu'en's pendant. Frankly, I don't want to know. The very thought makes my blood boil. But it does not take a Phronesian to know the truth."

Scrubbing a hand down his face, the grim thought hung between them. Losing his sister had been a blow far more devastating than Syena knew the words to describe. How different of a man would he be today if Liu'en had never been taken? Would they have had a happy family, one where he had never had to harden himself for the steely taste of disappointment and pain every time his parents doted on the false sibling in a bloody head before him? Or would his engagement to Anika have gone through and they would be happily married now? Even the idea of it was heavy on his heart.

Letting out a hard breath, he pivoted back to the moment before him. At Oliver's pathetic belief their mother was his biggest hurtle, the crown prince could not contain his scoff. "And do you think the queen is the only person you must beg forgiveness of if you screw things up with Uilum?" While he had never expected his adopted brother to be particularly smart, it was also impressive how stupid he was. Until a new realization dawned on Syena. "Ah. Of course. You've been coddled as my queen mother's pet for so long no one thought to teach you the basics. Let me lay it out for you."

Shifting, Syena pulling himself away from leaning against the desk. Instead he stepped back to his desk. Watching Oliver was no longer amusing or worth his while. Not while there was work to do and lives to save. Placing a hand on the back of his chair, he paused. "As much as I may not like you, we are royalty. Some by birth, some by -" Stopping, he gestured to Oliver. "- lesser means. We do not marry for childish things such as love. Our people need more from us than that. We marry to protect our people, to strengthen trade or our borders. Even the smallest of choices we make can save or kill thousands, so let me reiterate myself."

Pulling out his chair, he settled himself at his desk once more. "Do not ******** this up with Uilum and restart the war Oliver. Even my queen mother will see such defiance for what it truly is. You think I need to personally beat you into submission? Use your brain and realize that your place in this family is fickle at best with our new 'sister' back home. If you so much as cause a disturbance to ruin this newfound peace? Well, I won't need to make much of a case when you will have done all the work for me for once." Where had he been again? Oh right. The grain shortage. Flipping through the papers on his desk he found the letter he'd been mulling over before being so rudely interrupted. Syena didn't bother to offer so much as a glance before opening his mouth again. "And pick yourself up, will you? It's pathetic."
