Quote:
Engine 21 (12) : Once, Destiny City had a functioning train station. Over the years the tracks took their damage, and the cost to repair couldn’t be justified. So the city let it, and the station, fall into ruin. Of course there have been rumors that the train station was a hot spot for ghouls, stuck in perpetual transit. Lost souls with no place to go. It’s not uncommon for trespassers to come out of the station claiming they saw some frightful apparition wearing outfits right out of the mid 1900s. Sometimes, they even hear the whistle of a train, or the clattering of the track as a phantom train rolls in. Engine 21 was the last train to depart from the station, allegedly, and derailed on the way to the mountains. There were no survivors, but the legend differs in how many souls were lost. Some say, if you stand on the platform at 3:33AM you can hear their screams forever cemented in an endless loop, reliving their deaths nightly. It’s not uncommon for people to say that the railroad crossings will mysteriously light up and lower despite no oncoming trains, and some have even said they’ve seen a phantom train speeding through the night. Maybe it’s just a ghost story, but maybe you’ve seen something, too.

“Come on out, forces of evil,” Mystras chanted merrily as she tracked her way through the town’s older streets late at night. Had she lost a fight last time she had picked one? Maybe. Was that gonna stop her from going after the people who took people’s life forces for their own gain? Hell no!

Although, as she realized just what part of town she was in, she slowed down a bit, and stopped talking so loudly. “Wait, is this the place that’s supposed to be haunted?” The train station. Right. The outside walls were all cracked and creepy, like something fresh out of a horror movie, and she knew the urban exploration and ghost hunter types had a field day with the stories about all the stuff that had happened here.

She hadn’t used to be superstitious, but she also hadn’t used to have magic powers of her own.

“Okay, forces of evil. Maybe don’t come out. Maybe just chill a little, bruh.”

Yeah. Saying that would have to ward off any ghosts, right? Honestly she had no idea how this worked.

Dumuzi didn't really know anything about local rumours about places being haunted, or whatever his sibling was usually going on about. Nemyi's purview was the weird haunted things, Dumuzi didn't really care as much about them. He did enjoy things that were decidedly strange, but a train station being haunted?

Sounded like a bullshit myth.

That didn't really stop him from going to the area that was haunted according to his sibling. He did make sure to go in his fancy superhero guise just in case he needed to kill the youma that was probably actually behind the supposed haunting. He could probably still do that as a civilian, but it was so much easier when he had the extra strength provided by wearing whatever Pluto decided to put on him.

Still didn't understand his uniform. What was the … thing? drape? in front even covering? Did it matter?

He heard someone else talking, and at first wondered if he needed to go ahead and start getting ready to murder, but then he realized he wasn't feeling any chaos anywhere. Was that one of his fellow … knights? Yeah, probably a knight. Felt like a knight.

He would call his sister and ask, but he wasn't exactly able to transmit a feel over a phone-

“Finding any evil out here?” called Dumuzi, swinging his not-a-weapon over his shoulder as he approached the … the ******** was she anyway? Didn't recognize the symbol, but he also didn't do his ******** homework- “‘cause I would love to dust some a**.”

Mystras gasped as she heard the footsteps and then the voice behind her, and she whirled around with her little twig in both hands. There were no ghosts, though. Just a knight. He was really tall, like, really tall, but still looked pretty human.

She quickly dropped one hand to her hip, trying to look way more chill about the whole thing than she actually felt.

“No forces of evil so far,” she said, “Which is a shame, ‘cause I bet we’d make a great youma dusting team. ‘M Mystras.” If the rumors about this place had just turned out to be about youma, that would be a very easy problem to solve.

The lack of auras didn’t mean that they were totally safe from the supernatural, though.

“I haven’t heard about monsters here, though,” she told him. “More like ghosts and s**t.”

“Aw s**t,” Dumuzi couldn't help a snort when she said there was no monsters in the area. That was absolutely what he was looking for, maybe just to prove to his sibling that there wasn't any ******** haunting here. Now there was more credit to their case than his… “That's what Nem– uh, my sib was talking about. Hauntings or whatever,” he swatted toward the air because he couldn't bring himself to care about it.

Well.

Okay, he did care enough to bring himself all the way out here to try and kill some youma, only to find out there weren't any youma, but that didn't matter right?

Anyway-

“Dumuzi.” He saluted, as he should. “Of Pluto, I guess.” Well, since he had been there, it was no longer really a guess. It just sounded really weird. Like he could actually breathe on Pluto? He knew he sometimes didn't understand his science lessons, but he was pretty sure that should have been impossible… “Maybe we can find some things to kick the a** of out here. Like some ghosts.”

Could they beat up a ghost? He was willing to find out.

“Oh, I’m Jupiter if we’re talking about planets,” said Mystras. Whatever that meant. She had some idea of it, since Pendour was very into all the space stuff, but she herself hadn’t actually visited Jupiter or found out much of the specifics other than the fact that she and the other Jupiter knights seemed to have viking vibes.

Oh. So Dumuzi wanted to punch a ghost. Mystras was willing to try, maybe, if a ghost was, like, threatening someone, but-

Suddenly, the crossing lights next to the station began to flicker on, and the arm that blocked the road came down, then up again. The light flickered back off. Mystras didn’t think there was a logical explanation. A building in that state of disrepair couldn’t even have electricity turned on, could it?

She gave a little wordless murmur and took half a step back.

“How. How are we supposed to punch that.”

Jupiter. Okay. That was what the weird four meant. So he was a strange P and she was a weird four … was Jupiter the fourth planet maybe?

No, that didn't quite sound right…

“Richtersveld says the origin is important or something,” Dumuzi shrugged, “but i-d-k, I've been there once, it just seems kinda dead.” At least more dead than his memories implied. Nothing was weird and trippy and in motion the way his memories said. Everything was just… suspended in air.

And acting weird, like how those arms suddenly worked. Uh.

“I don't see a train …” Dumuzi's brows knit. How the ******** did they deal with arms acting weird? “Uh. Should I punch the arms?”

That seemed like a bad plan, but it didn't stop him from going up to the arm and punching it with more force than necessary anyway. It mostly just hurt his knuckles a bit. Hm–

“Oh s**t-” wait, was there actually a train? He, for once, showed some restraint and scrambled a bit further back.

Dumuzi punched the crossing arm thing, but it didn’t seem to do much. Mystras took another half step back, chewing her lip. She hadn’t heard rumors of people going missing here or something. It was spooky, but not so dangerous she had to, like, risk angering whatever weird train ghosts were lingering here in order to try to destroy them, which probably wasn’t even possible.

“I dunno,” she told him. “I’m a Page, not a ghostbuster. You wanna punch things, right? So do I.”

But even with the stranger happenings, there were still no auras anywhere around here.

“C’mon. Maybe if we go somewhere else, we can find some monsters.”

Those, they could handle no problem.

“Yeah,” confirmed Dumuzi, shifting uncomfortably. There was no ******** way that Nemyi was actually right about this ridiculous ghost story, right? He would say ghosts didn't exist, he had never seen one, there wasn't even one on his wonder like there supposedly could be, but also…

Yeah, maybe he didn't want to stick around and find out. He didn't know if he could punch a ghost. He was willing to try.

So willing.

But he was amped for a fight, and he wasn't sure if this would be a fight so much as weird creepy s**t and an echoing sound of a train? Was that what he was hearing?

“Yeah.” Dumuzi was no coward. He wasn't. He knew where the better fight would be, though. “Let's go find the ******** monsters.”
