Lanting knew that he probably shouldn't pick up strange objects in Destiny City. Realistically, that wasn't a smart move anywhere; moreso it was a stupid one when he was in a city where s**t routinely went sideways for no actual reason. Especially when the city seemed determined to have seasonally appropriate magical bullshit occurring.
And yet. Here he was. Noticing something shining in the bushes and going top pick it up, like an idiot.
It was a die--which was fascinating. Dice this nice didn't just appear out on the road. certainly not made like this. Gilded, wood, and opal, and--
There was a rush of wind, and Lanting's stomach dropped as he squeezed his eyes shut and threw up an arm to block his face.
When his eyes opened, squares stretched out before him.
"Ah, ********>

Quote: Space 5: A dog barks, fierce and frightening. You can hear its growl and the hackles stand up on the back of your neck. You can practically feel spittle on you. It’s close. And it’s big. And it’s angry. If this beastly dog could reach you, no doubt it would try to tear you to shreds. Fine. Lanting could recognize a challenge when he saw one, and he wasn't going to back down from this one. It was a stupid game, right? He played way harder games on the daily! What was the gameboard gonna do, throw Ornstein and Smaugh at him? Ha. Not likely.
So, he threw the die, and watched it come up 5, and booked it for the fifth space. That was good--a high roll to start things off, so he could get the ******** out quicker.
The thing was, he could hear something.
Something loud. Angry. Doggish, which was just his ******** luck after that weird corgi youma. But this sounded way, way bigger than some tiny little angry monster corgi--and it sounded <******** you, Cujo!" He yelled into the darkness, braver than he felt, and very quickly, he rolled his die again.

Quote: Space 10: A swampy smell fills the air. You take a step, and you seem to sink into it. Mud creeps over your feet, and you sink rapidly. Ankle deep, knee deep. Whether or not you squirm and fight against it, you are sinking. The mud is crushing and painful, and if you sink too deep it steals the breath from your lungs. There’s nothing to grab onto; you have to roll your dice quickly before that too gets sucked into the muddy quicksand. This time, another five. Honestly, Lanting was glad to be making such good time--surely he'd be out soon enough, if he kept getting such good rolls. He jogged forward five more spaces, scooping up the die as he went.
And when he hit the end of his run, he wished he hadn't gone so quickly, because the reek of an awful swamp hit his nose and he felt his feet sinking.
"Ohh s**t," he gasped. "s**t, s**t, no--"
He wasn't going to drown in some kind of Hidetaka Miyazaki Special, not here, not now, he had to get out, had to keep going, had to get back to Corvina so this could just be a funny story they laughed about.
He pitched the die, hard, and prayed it didn't get lost.

Quote: Space 16: As you step into your square, something cracks. At first, you can’t tell what it is, but as your full weight moves onto the square, the ground shifts beneath you. It’s cold, and it’s ice, and a hole falls underneath you, plunging you into frigid waters. There’s enough floating ice that you should still be able to roll the dice to get out of here, but you have to go quickly–you’re soaked, in chilly water, and something just swam by your feet. Lanting managed to haul himself out of the awful, swampy mud--and the dice were clearly in his favor, because the face he saw as he scooped it up was a gilded, sparkly 6.
Six spaces forward. He swore he could see the end, not far off at all, and his heart leapt in his chest. So close, he was so close--
He hit his square.
Felt something shift beneath his feet.
Shift, and crack, and suddenly, there was nothing under him and he was plunging into frigid water.
He yelped, pain and shock and cold all at once, and hurled the die, hearing it clatter on the ground not far away. Swamps and cold water and--and this was the worst, but he had to get out and go home.

Quote: Space 18: You smell something poison, something noxious. You pass through a haze of strange, green gas as you enter the square, but it fades after a few seconds. You feel cold. You feel empty. You start to decay. Maybe a part of you knows it’s an illusion, but in that split second when your body feels like it might go limp and when you look at your hand and see skin melting. You see bone. You’d best roll the dice so you don’t wind up a skeleton prop for the next player. Lanting hauled himself out of the water and scooped up his die.
Of course, now, so close to the end, it came up a measly 2.
Still, that was two steps forward, and he took it slow, hugging himself and shivering. When he arrived at his next square, he stopped to catch his breath--and that was a mistake.
This, here, was the real Miyazaki Special--awful, poisonous gas, and Lanting felt--
Lanting felt as if he was coming apart.
It hurt, to feel himself decaying, like some kind of walking zombie, but a conscious one, and--and oh, he hated this so much, he had to get out of here so he could go home.
He was pretty sure he'd started crying. He didn't want to wipe his eyes to check, not when his hands felt--rotten.
He threw the die and prayed. Not something he did often, but it seemed warranted now.

Quote: Space 20: The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best. Lanting was very definitely still crying when he ran forward, stumbling over the line to the final square. At least he wasn't cold and decaying anymore, but the feeling of it stayed with him, and yes, okay, he was holding his die against his chest like a lifeline, but he really, really never wanted to see this place again.
He felt something warm, and the glow was truly beautiful--and then he was back on the street where he'd found the die, and.
Frankly, if you asked Lanting? That was more than enough patrolling for one night.
