Confidence, something Kom El Shoqafa had in spades.
…usually.
Tonight was an off night, however, keeping him on his toes. The general air of ‘Spooky Season’ often hit him strangely, and after the odd phone call he’d gotten? Well. He was on edge and ready to go.
So ready to go, it seemed, that as he was stepping out of an alleyway, he stepped on something and his feet fell out from under him! He could’ve sworn he saw his life flash before his eyes, but before he even made contact with the ground with his butt, he was slammed down and surrounded by darkness.
He wasn’t afraid of the dark, but combined with everything else this just had him even more on edge, looking for whatever had tripped him up only to find a die. A particularly odd, yet pretty six sided die. Looking up, he could see squares…only just. More than enough that he could make a guess as for what he needed to do.
“How did I avoid all this weird stuff, again…?” He let out a heavy sigh as he grabbed the die and moved to crouch instead of sitting on the ground, letting the die fall from his hand.

Six. Maybe this ordeal would be over sooner than he thought if he was rolling this well right off the bat! He took a moment too long to begin moving, though, feeling himself being pushed forward until…well, he wasn’t being pushed further.
Then he heard it, the sound of something whizzing past, something that he just knew was full of danger. He moved to crouch down to get the die again, but felt something cut his face as he went about it, blood trickling down his cheek.
Okay. He was not picking up the die. He used his foot, gently kicking the die. Hopefully whatever came next would be something less painful…?

….he jinxed himself. Two. Now he was on box eight – and he took a moment in the process to reach down for the die once he was certain the sharp strings wouldn’t hurt him further.
Which…was a blessing in and of itself. No sooner had he straightened up only to find there was a sensation of something moving over his boot. Eyebrows arched upward as he looked down and his face paled.
Snakes. Why, of all things, did it have to be snakes? They seemed uncaring that he was there, but he was not ready to risk getting hurt…so once more, he dropped the die.

Four. Off to space twelve it was – and he swore he could hear rattling in the midst of the hissing as he was shoved away from the snakes, moving on to what fresh torment awaited him, die scooped up once more.
Smoke. Screams. Warmth. Too much warmth, and the smoke grew thicker, denser, causing him to cough and double over, making it take a hot moment before he thought to drop the die once more. Please, please, let him out…!

Something, someone, somewhere was having a laugh at him. One. He rolled a one…and was now on square thirteen. Surely nothing could be as bad as the snakes, right?
For a moment, he thought maybe he’d gotten a bit of a breather. Everything seemed okay…
…but then he could hear the sounds of tiny feet scuttering across the board, followed a short time later by the vibrations. Rats. So many rats…so gross…so big…so wrong…
“Go back to the snakes!” Even without anyone else here, he had to try and have a laugh at his own expense, scooping up and dropping the die. “C’mon, we can do better than that.”

Four again, that meant…seventeen? Scooping up the die, he jogged to the space and the sound of rats was gone…replaced instead by–
“AWOOOOOOOOO”
– howling. And this was certainly not catcalling, wolfwhistling that some human monsters were prone to doing, no, this sounded feral and utterly uncaring for human life.
“Oh for crying out loud.” His face was as white as Elmer’s glue as he dropped the die once more, crouching down so he could pick it up and run – if the strange surroundings would let him!

One. Again. Up to eighteen – and he could see it, could see the end, if only he could roll the right numbers. Something smelled off – though he was quick to brush it off. He needed not to dwell on whatever else was coming, whatever else was here, he needed to move.
Looking down to his hand, about to drop the die, he saw white…and it wasn’t his skin or his attire.
He let out a screech as he dropped the die again. Surely he would be out this turn!

Another die appeared – he didn’t remember dropping two? – but one of the pair quickly disappeared as he was shoved into the glorious final square, looking down to his hand and seeing it whole. And before he could even let out a ‘thank goodness’, he was back where he had began, the die he’d tripped on glinting in the dim light of the alley.
“...nope. I’m putting you where you belong,” he grumbled, picking it up…and dropping it in the dumpster before making his way onward, heart still rattling within his chest.
