The morning sun did little to quell the chill that clung to Maritza's bones. Despite Matori's coastal weather, the nights did little to warm her and now more than ever she felt the bite. Ever since the accident she'd lost a significant amount of weight, which on her already thin frame made her look perpetually ill. On nights when she could stand it - or when the healer would allow - she would get as close to Uquin as possible, trying her best to leech any sort of comfort from a man who was barely any bigger than she was.
"It's the time of year" she'd been told or "once the storms pass the air will warm."
Lies the lot of it.
Day by day she'd been regaining bits of her strength, but with that came longer bouts of consciousness and Maritza's newfound limitations. The aches in her body, the pulls of still bruised tissue and healing bone, were nothing compared to what it took. When she'd pulled herself outside of the healer's hut to sit atop the steps leading to the sand she'd very nearly lost her balance - twice - all because she tried reaching for the railing with her left hand.
The hand that was no longer there. The stump that started mid bicep, that was wrapped tight and tucked against her bruised body as a blanket lay half wrapped around her.

It was difficult to imagine his mother as anything but strong and fierce. Lioe had been warned about Maritza's depleted condition, but even his story filled mind couldn't imagine her in such a state. Between that and trying to adjust to Matori's culture and climate, Lioe just wanted to find a bookstore and a deep corner to hide in. There was no hiding away with Aerexa and Marcella though, and thank the gods, or whatever power was out there, that they had come along. He might not have stepped foot off of the airship without their support! And the trip to the healer's hut? He would have been worried about his death grip on Aerexa's hand had he been a physically stronger man. Carrying stacks and boxes of books couldn't compare to a warrior's grip. Still, it had gotten him to the hut. Now that comforting hand was gone though, off giving him space for the visit. He was standing as still as a statue as he looked out toward the ocean, delaying going inside. The water was a different hue here... Lost in thought, he casually looked over at the steps he heard on the stairs without thinking. Was.. was that really her? He stared with unrestrained shock for a moment. She looked so thin... so tired... that blanket covering her arm... He forced down the lump that was clogging his throat and turned fully. He could do this. He could he could he could. "Mom.." His voice was a dismal croak, which made the heat of self-consciousness fly to his cheeks.

When a shock of orange hair caught her eye Maritza didn't expect it to be Lioe. She'd thought maybe it was Isaiah, now that he had been given the clearance to move about, and for a moment Maritza just stared. How else could she react, given everything she'd experienced and to now see the one son she'd never expect to travel standing just beyond her reach? "Lioe?" Her voice was a husk of the booming bravado it had once been. When she turned her eyes to him, fully taking in the sight before her, Maritza started to rise. "Lioe." The frail woman's voice picked up as surely as her legs and although she was unsteady she was standing, the blanket falling away entirely, as she took a step toward him. "You're here? You came?"

A shiver crept up his back when he was seen. This certainly wasn't the mother he remembered. Not in the slightest. He nearly flinched from the raspy voice, unsure of how to take in everything he was experiencing in that moment. "I-" A flutter of the wind had cleared the blanket away with a dramatic flare, stealing whatever of Lioe's breath had remained. The tears started rippling in his eyes, and his hand rose to cover his mouth as if to hold back a sob. Was she happy to see him? Was she angry? That gaunt face was even harder to read than before. And so much of her arm was just gone! "Yeah.. Yeah, mom. I'm here."

It was hard for Maritza to see what had been done to her as anything less than a tragedy. She remembered every moment that the flames had licked across her skin, burning so deep through tissue and bone that she would never look quite right, but the moment of dismemberment...The pain would linger, the memories would tear at her like a disease, and yet it didn't compare to seeing the eyes of those she loved most as they adjusted to their own set of horrors. "I didn't think you would come." She said at length. It was as blunt and punctuated as ever, but with a vulnerable edge that Maritza wasn't used to. "...but I'm glad you did." When she smiled it was a tiny thing, something so exhausted it could barely pull, but pure. And when she exhaled fresh tears slid down her cheeks.

At first, Lioe didn't respond. His mouth pressed with understanding, trying firmly to get his expression under control. His mother had been through enough without him gawking like a fool. He felt like he should say something encouraging or meaningful, but.. she wasn't wrong. He wouldn't have come all this way without someone special kicking his backside at the start of the journey. He was so busy trying to sort his thoughts that he almost didn't catch the second half of Maritza's statement. Almost. His eyes widened with surprise. Perhaps he shouldn't have felt as he did, but after spending the whole trip assuming that she would be upset with him in one way or another... well, it took a moment to sink in. Once it did, he trembled with a mix of intense and childlike emotions. His mother was alive, and glad to see him! He sucked his lower lip into his mouth to chew on while his own eyes watered. He walked forward with a few quick steps to close the distance, but stalled right at the end. When was the last time he and his mother had hugged? Maybe she wouldn't even want him touching her after such horrible injuries? He inhaled sharply to bite back a sob, voice tight with the restraint. "I'm so happy you're okay."

Maritza's steps were unsteady on the sand, but determined. The fragility of her body couldn't keep Maritza away from him, especially when she saw the raw emotion on his face. The bonds she held with her children had always been strained; not out of hatred, but a lack of maternal understanding. There was so much she'd missed throughout their childhoods because she hadn't been able to adapt, but to have him here now, when she'd been terrified to never see him again -
It was enough to force her into a stumbling shuffle that closed the distance. When she was close enough to wrap her lone arm around him she did so and openly sobbed as she all but fell against Lioe. Her body burned and injuries that still hadn't healed felt as if scalding rods were being shoved into them yet still she held on. When was the last time she'd held him? When was the last time she'd told Lioe she loved him? And would she ever get the chance again?

Lioe's vision blurred with heat the moment the hug happened. Honestly, it took his a second to fully react to the open expression from his usually stoic mother. His body shuddered with the relief of the broken tension while his arms quickly but gently wrapped around Maritza's frail figure. She was alive... By whatever grace of nature, as beat up as she was, Maritza was alive. It made him wonder how he could have ever possibly thought it would end any other way. His mother was one of the strongest people he knew; his whole family was. He was a realist, but if anyone could be extraordinary, it was his family. His mother and his brother had both survived the impossible... ...and his mother's first reaction to seeing him was to hug him. He let out a shaking sigh, both soothed and overwhelmed all at once. That hug communicated more than any words that Maritza could have said in that moment. He closed his eyes and turned his head to let his tear-stained cheek rest against Maritza's head.

Whatever force was holding Maritza upright dipped the moment her son reciprocated the hug. She felt her knees waver and were it not for the contact she very well might have dropped. A soft noise of surprise slipped out, followed by a hiss of pain that was clamped down by gritted teeth. The moisture in her eyes and the fullness of her heart couldn't mitigate the stress her body had endured. Even if she'd been released from bedrest there were still limits to the amount of activity Maritza could withstand and evidently her earlier 'walk', if one could count that, had worn her. Seeing Lioe was just enough to bring her down. She never let go of him, though. Couldn't fathom it. Maritza kept him as close as possible for as long as she could before murmuring, "Can you help me to the steps? I think if don't sit down I might pull a stitch and your father will get another grey hair."

He thought he noticed her leaning on him more, but it was hard to tell with a woman who already weighed nothing while healthy! Lioe was able to support her easily, and he wanted to make sure she could tell he was willing to do so. Uncertain of how to proceed from the hug though, he waited for Maritza to guide the moment. He let out a tiny but playful snort and nodded his head. "He really doesn't need more of those." He hooked his arm with Maritza's to assist her back to the stairs. Once there, he eased her down and went to grab the blanket that had fallen by the wayside. He let out a soft sigh and placed the blanket back around his mother's shoulders. "Anything I can get you?"

Maritza's descent was far from graceful. If it weren't for the support of her son the woman may have flopped onto the planks all together. Her strength may have been returning, but it was a slow process - hampered by age and general exhaustion. She exhaled with a huff that shifted into a self-deprecating smile as Lioe tucked the blanket around her. Maritza wasn't sure whether to thank him for it or chastise him for making her feel older than she already was. Considering the moment she settled for patting the spot beside her instead. "Sit with me?" She shifted, adjusting the blanket with her singular hand. "Tell me about your trip, how long you've been here...and Marcella. Is she with your Uncle?" Maritza's brow furrowed. It was bad enough to have her older children here to experience this, but Marcie should be home.

Just.. sit? That was all? Ah.. questions. He gingerly sat down and clasped his hands together in his lap. "Once I decided to come out here, I couldn't really tell Marcella she had to stay back. She probably would have found a way to sneak on the ship anyway to come see you. We just got here yesterday. Marcella's with dad right now. I'm sure he'll talk with you about when to bring her around." At least Maritza would be more ready to receive her daughter, so the meeting should be a little less shocking. Lioe felt a little bad for surprising her like he had, but he hadn't expected her to come outside so early either. "The trip wasn't bad. My friend Aerexa came with us to help me, help us, get here." It felt silly to think about after the fact, but he knew he would never have made it to Matori without her. "Haven't been on an airship since the trip to Belrea. I had enough saved to get us good spots."

So Marcella was here. At least she would have some time to prepare before seeing her youngest, and maybe seeing Uquin - Well s**t. Maritza gave a bark of a laugh that ended on a tired grin. "I didn't know what you two would think of me, but have you seen your father? His gods have blessed him with a unique gift." Oh and Zadia...Well, Lioe would figure that out soon enough. His sister didn't even look the same as when she'd left Belrea. None of them did. "Your friend Aerexa?" Maritza questioned drily. "The last time I called anyone I traveled with on an airship a 'friend' I ended up with triplets."

The rough laugh made Lioe jump with surprise. Had he said something wrong? Oh.. dad? Unique? "Just when I dropped off Marcella, but he didn't say anything about a gift..." Of course, he hadn't lingered for very long to chat either. Once he'd found out where to go to see Maritza, he'd gotten Aerexa settled at the inn and headed off. Any delay would have made him drag his heels even longer. Though, he had thought it odd seeing his father wearing a hood... The teasing warning actually made him sputter with disbelief at the forward display, and the heat of bashful embarrassment crawled up his cheeks. "M-mom! It's not like that. She wouldn't want- I mean- It can't, you know? They don't- She's a Vandrea. They don't have accidental triplets." He swallowed a gulp of air which only seemed to fuel the unusual blush and huffed back out to quickly move on. "But what do you mean, dad has a unique gift? You said blessed by his gods?"

The look Maritza passed Lioe's way was one of pure amusement. There was a tug to her mouth that hadn't been there before and a glint in her eye. "She wouldn't want, but you would?" She couldn't help pressing him a little further. Maybe it was the gravity of their situation, but Maritza wanted to hang onto that brief bit of levity. It was something new; something different. All these past weeks had consisted of were pain, mourning, and depression. So, maybe she shouldn't have delighted in tormenting her son, but it was also a newer side to Lioe so...maybe it was okay, just this once, to test him.
Ah, but then the bit about this girl's heritage caused Maritza's brows to raise. "Vandrea, huh? What is it with Uquin's blood and chasing Aishans?" She murmured and shook her head. Out of her brood Maritza certainly never expected her quiet, unassuming son to show up with one, but then again, she'd never gotten to know Lioe as well as she should have.
"Shortly after he and Zadia came things shifted. For one your father appeared with these long, furred ears - like an aldabuk." She raised her good hand and mimicked touching one, as if her own ears had shifted into them. "Then people around the refugee camp started to change. I thought it was the fever at first, but then Zadia showed up...Well, you'll have to see her for yourself."
