Haunted Tour (10) : There are plenty of themed events during the Halloween season, and Destiny City has turned one of its historic tours into a themed ghost tour. It’s fairly cozy and lighthearted for the most part; some stories are haunting, and some are silly. It’s a clever way to get new people interested in the history of the city, and one particular tour has garnered quite a buzz thanks to the rumors of one very curious ghost taking a tour of its own–following you. Maybe you noticed it in one of the old buildings–someone watching you, or someone you didn’t see brushing against you. Maybe you noticed the chill, or a voice you heard but on one seemed to. Maybe you caught something out of the corner of your eye. Maybe you only noticed it when you were alone. Something has followed you. Maybe it is a soothing presence, or maybe it feels dangerous and unnerving. Even if you see a glimpse of the apparition, you cannot make out fine details or communicate with them. They will linger, maybe for a short while or maybe until dawn, but they always disappear without a trace by sunrise.

Tristan stared at his phone screen in mild disbelief. The coworker who had begged him to go with him on one of DC’s temporarily themed Ghost Tours had just bailed on him in favor of going on a date with his girlfriend. It took a minute or so for him to even start processing what just happened, and before he could even finish he heard the tour guide start to rattle off at the front of the group. It tore his eyes away from the screen, and with a sigh he slipped the device into his pocket and decided that maybe that was just his fate for the evening.

He rather liked these tours anyway, so it wasn’t the worst thing. He vaguely remembered going on something similar last year with one of his sisters, and he had a pretty good time. Whether that was the tour or his sister, he had no clue, but either way he was already here.

“May as well enjoy it,” he said, glancing to his side and smiling politely at his current neighbor before turning his full attention to their tour guide. Once he was done speaking and had instructed them to start following to their direct stop, he looked over at her again.

“First time?” he asked, wondering if she was open for a little small talk.

Kata had seen the tours advertised, she tried to Zoya to come with her but her sister insisted she was busy with other things and just not generally interested in ghost tours.

The gentleman beside her mentioned something about might as well enjoy the tour. She was slightly curious though she didn't say anything as he put up his phone and smiled. She smiled back and turned her attention also to the tour guide.

She started following the group when she heard him ask if it was her first time. "On an actual tour? Yeah." She said as she put her hands behind her back walking.

"I mean I've been watching haunted house tours and some paranormal investigations on youtube. I thought I might try an actual tour since it was offered." She paused before she returned the question, "What about you?"

”Nope,” he said with a nod, now looking forward to make sure he was going in the right direction. It had happened to him before, taking a wrong turn and getting lost with a friend while on some kind of guided tour. It was a city tour not in DC, and they’d lost out on quite a bit of time because of that. He didn’t want a repeat of that event, so he was being careful.

“First time this year, though, with this theme thing they got going.” Tristan went on while wearing a wide, amused smile. “Friend of mine was curious, but he ‘ghosted’ me, so to speak.” He chuckled then, and extended a hand.

“I’m Tristan, by the way.”

Oh she was interested as it wasn't his first tour but that was kind of neat. "Oh, I'm sorry your friend ghosted you."

She frowned a little bit, "I would've brought my sister but she was busy working on something at home so I didn't bother her." She added, she could've brought Zoya but she wasn't sure the Zoya would've enjoyed a haunted tour.

She took his hand and gave it a firm shake, "Kata!" She added with a smile.

"So do you often do these tours? I was thinking I may try to do them a little more often when they offered them." She admitted, "Or maybe going on vacation to do a haunted tour could be cool."

He pulled on a thoughtful expression as he analyzed the when and why behind his taking these tours over and over again. Ultimately he gave a little shrug, his smile faltering just a bit. “I usually take family or friends who’ve never gone but wanna go, or sometimes I go seasonally on my own when they add some kind of spin to it, like this themed tour.”

Tristan laughed then, a friendly, if resigned sound. Being the youngest, he’d always been the one tasked with taking visiting family around for this kind of thing. Thankfully he didn’t mind, but there were some days…

He was about to say more when he felt a sudden chill go down his spine, and he visibly shuddered and glanced around behind him.

There was no one there, and nothing really that could have been used by someone to hide behind, so he chalked it up to the theme of the tour getting to him and turned back to Kata.

“Vacation might be interesting. I’m sure there are more haunted tours that are actually haunted outside of this city.” The tour guide had them stop again and went on down the script. Tristan had heard it all before, so he opted to pay more attention to his possibly new friend. “So are haunted things kinda your thing, or…?”

"Oh that's neat!" She said as he talked about taking family and friends who haven't gone or going to seasonal ones when there was a theme to it.

Haunted was totally a theme for sure. She saw him looking around wondering what happened; Kata paused, "Well, I recently found the whole thing on youtube with people exploring abandoned and haunted buildings. I thought this might be neat to see what it was like since it was a tour that was curated. At least it's not breaking an entering. I might do more of these."

She turned her attention towards their tour guide who had paused to talk about a landmark and what had happened. When she suddenly heard a whisper from behind, "Huh?" Her head snapped around and stood looking at the empty sidewalk behind them.

"Odd, I thought someone was there." Kata seemed to frown a bit but shrugged it off when she was satisfied that her and Tristan were the only two at the rear of the tour.

”I think it’s a two birds, one stone kinda deal,” he said with a little smile. “Learn about the city, have a little fun with the themes. I highly recommend going on more if you wind up liking this one.”

He was about to say more when she suddenly turned to look behind them. He followed suit, and when she said that he felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.

“Yeah, earlier I could swear I felt someone looking at me.” He looked out into the dimly lit path behind them for a bit longer before turning back to Kata with a far more nervous expression than he cared to admit to. “I can appreciate the spooky season as much as the next guy, but I’m okay with just saying that they did a really good job with this haunted tour if you are. What do you think?”

Kata nodded when Tristan mentioned two birds one stone, "It's a great concept really."

She was smiling as he said he highly recommended going on more, "I think I might! This does seem to be fun, but I'll see how it ends first before I decide completely."

She was trying to soothe the goose bumps that had ran down her arms as she stood there, and a cold chill ran across her whole body. "I'm okay with that too." She said softly looking around, "I think they spent too much money on the special effects." Was that movement in the alley way?

She noticed the crowd was heading off, "Lets go maybe it's just this area we're feeling and hearing things." She was trying not to look nervous but it was one of those things, she didn't want to end up haunted. She grabbed his hand and was hoping to softly lead him off away from this part of the tour. Why was no one else seeing or feeling this?

”Yeah, I think so, too,” he said, turning his head to look this way and that when he also noticed some possible movement in the alley. On top of that, he could swear he felt eyes once again staring at him from somewhere nearby. It was hard not to notice, but he tried not to make it obvious that he felt that and instead turned his focus to the moving crowd as well.

He was a little surprised when she took his hand, but took it as someone feeling the creeps and let it be, following her lead toward the crowd before gently pulling free when they rejoined them.

“Safety in number, right?’ he said with a nervous chuckle. “Why don’t we just stick close to the crowd? With any luck we won’t notice any of that again, and we can just focus on learning about the city.”

Because that was totally easy when you couldn’t shake the feeling that someone or something was tailing you…

He would certainly try, though.

Kata nodded as he said he thought so too. She felt the eyes and cast a soft glance behind her hoping that they wouldn't be followed by whatever it was. She didn't need creepy things following them.

"Yes safety in numbers, that's what I always tell my little sister." She added as they were catching back up to the crowd she left him pull free and she let out a sigh as they were back with the crowd. She probably shouldn't've grabbed his hand but it was reflective almost from when she had an older brother, and well even when she's protective of her little sister.

She kind of embarrassed herself when she realized what she did but he didn't say anything about it. So she didn't bring it up.

"Yeah I think sticking closer to the crowd is best, maybe if it's real . . . it won't attach to one of us." She said softly. That was kind of creepy and ironically she noticed the tour guide talking about the haunted history of this particular building.

That was fantastic timing.

She was ignoring the feeling as if the ghost was still trailing them. She was looking at the architecture of the buildings. "I wish we hadn't gotten away from the fancier houses like the Victorians and Colonial."

”I think I’m just gonna assume it’s not real,” he chuckled, then like Kata turned his attention back to the tour guide. It was a nice distraction, and before long he’d forgotten about the creepy factor they had just encountered.

“They’re definitely more charming,” Tristan nodded in agreement, “but I’m kind of a fan of the modernization. I like pockets of the charm, though, like in the older neighborhoods? I think having both is pretty nice.” Not to mention, these older, more charming exteriors were potentially home to some kind of haunted something or other that he’d rather not have to deal with.

Kata nodded, "Yeah if it's not real it can't hurt you."

She nodded when he said they're more charming, "The character is something you don't find a lot with the craftsmanship of the carved detail."

She paused thinking about modern architecture as he talked about how he liked that style but having both was pretty nice, "Yeah I feel like the modern style has it's place as well, it's such a stark contrast though, as long as it's not the cookie cutter houses, I feel like that's where some of the charm gets lost, if those had some differences, like gingerbread detail and even mixed with modern lines and contrast."

She paused thinking about the differences between the two styles and then the cookie cutter that just kind of needed some help to not look the same. They reminded her of mill houses but she felt like she'd seen mill houses with more character.

She looked at Tristian, "Do you have a favorite style of architecture? I know you said a fan of modern but like over all." She felt like something was still following her but she tried to brush that off. She did hope it would move along whatever it was.

It was still following…whatever it was. Tristan did his best to ignore it, though, and made a point to keep close to the group.

“Not really?’ he said after thinking about it for a moment. Truth be told he hadn’t spent too much time thinking about the architectural styles that he preferred. He actually couldn’t even tell the difference most of the time, unless the contrast was stark–like modern homes versus Victorian homes. “I can appreciate architecture in general,” he went on, laughing a bit lame as he finished. “But once you start getting into specifics I kinda get lost.”

It was something he ought to do a bit more research on, he had to admit. It’d help with his comic, he knew that much, but whether or not he actually had the time to do that was an entirely different story.

“What about you, though? Sounds like you know a bit about it.”

Kata looked interested, he didn't know much about the styles. "I guess these tours don't really go over many periods of architecture then. Pity."

She paused for a moment when he asked about hers and said it sounded like she knew a lot. "Aha, well I do like the large Victorians I feel like if my whole family was together again, it'd been much nicer to have lived in one of those instead of splitting rooms with my sisters and my brother having got his own room."

She rolled her shoulders, "I did kind of pick up studying the styles and stuff because I paint miniatures and been dabbling in table top gaming. Sometimes being able to give flavor to the settings is nice or being able to construct what you kind of dream up helps. I've thought about trying to study game design but I don't know if it'd help to do it in a formal setting."

The paranormal whatever it was had popped its shadowy visage around a corner to what felt like watch the group and Kata was doing her very best to ignore the fact it was still there.

”I get that,” he said, thinking of his own experience with drawing his comics. “That’s pretty cool. I’ll probably have to do that for my comics one of these days, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.” He’d been meaning to do more research for his most recent idea, but between work and life in general it was getting harder and harder to squeeze in time for his artistic passions.

Which, while not ideal, he was learning to live with. He made time when he could, but he had a life he was building together with Hannah, as well as his Negaverse responsibilities, both of which took priority at this point for him.

Tristan could still sense something on their tail, but he was also doing his best to ignore it in favor of a pleasant conversation. They were probably close to the end of the tour at this point, so they would only have to deal with it for a little bit longer.
