Shingen MaedaThe last few feet of paved road to Maeda Temple ended at the foot of the hills and was as far as the taxi could take them. Bamboo covered much of the path, concealing movement in and out on foot although the presence of the village was not a secret to the locals. Shingen rather enjoyed the long trek from the start of the stepped trail to the seat of his clan. It was physically taxing to anyone especially those carrying a load. Shingen was unburdened except for his thoughts on the circumstances of his last departure from home. As clan head, his place was with the council of elders and among his people. Although it was commonplace for the Maeda to lend their services to the outside world, that was something reserved for the lesser members of the family, far from the family head to partake in. Shingen had no doubt he’d run into trouble with the elders, even more so when it was time for him to leave again. The fact there had been no one to greet him at the head of the trail spoke to just how sourly they viewed his leaving. Words like “abandoning duty” and “desertion” were thrown around at the time. Opening the car door for Kai, he couldn’t help but look up at the familiar path with concern. He wasn’t quite sure what they’d think about him bringing someone along but they just didn’t know what she could do. ”Well, here it is. We have to walk the rest of the way.” He smiled softly. It was an inconvenience for sure but it was for the safety of the clan. He pulled a compact water bladder bag out of the trunk and was prepared to help Kai with whatever she had brought. It meant a lot for him that she had agreed to come. To take her from her family which she loved very much meant a large responsibility for him personally. To keep her safe and make the trip worthwhile was the very least he would do.

Kai stepped out of the car, the soft earth crunching beneath her shoes as she looked around. Her breath caught for a moment as the sight of the wild countryside unfolded before her. The towering bamboo stretched high into the sky, their rustling leaves creating a hushed melody with the breeze. The air here felt different—cleaner, fresher, carrying the scent of damp earth and something almost sweet she couldn’t quite place. It was so far from city noise it was almost surreal in its serenity.
Her nerves buzzed beneath the surface, a little flutter of excitement mixed with uncertainty. She wasn’t used to being out like this, away from the controlled environments of school trips and guided tours. And the idea that this was her own journey—no classmates, no teachers—filled her with both pride and a twinge of fear.
"Wow..." she murmured softly, eyes wide as they took in the endless green. She could feel the anticipation building in her chest and though she was clutching the strap to her messenger bag as if it were a familiar anchor keeping her grounded, she couldn’t help but smile. "It’s so beautiful here." The unchecked, abundant wilderness and green growth reminded her of that elven city they visited, but at the same time it was completely different. The flora had an entirely different feeling to it, a tranquility she couldn't quite place. Not to say the lush forests of the elven city hadn't been tranquil but they felt more... alive somehow. Noisier? She shook her head. Just enjoy it Kai.
Kai glanced at Shingen, a shy but hopeful smile playing on her lips. "You mentioned you grew up here?" she asked, feeling the weight of the bag in her hand shift as she came around to the trunk. Kai had a huuuuge rolling suitcase and a large duffle bag that was barely carry on sized. They were only supposed to be gone for a week but she'd been so nervous about what to bring that she made sure she hadn't left anything out! She also packed many cooking and treats that would travel well from the bakery so she could give them to Shingen's family or to Shingen himself she supposed if no one wanted any. Then she could put any presents she bought on the way for her brothers into the empty space in her bags.
As she attempted to pull the bags out, Shingen so graciously came over to lift the heavy luggages from the trunk and set them of the ground. "Th- thank you." A soft spread of pink painted the freckles across her nose and she pushed up her glasses. Looking at the pathway, it seemed like the wheels on her bag might have some trouble.
"How far is it to the house?"

 Shingen Maeda
Shingen pulled the luggage out from the back of the car and set everything on the road her gratitude blossoming under her freckles, one of his favorite features. He could see Kai admiring the lush greenery too which he appreciated. It was a big change from all the bustling of the city. ”Yeah, born and raised for the most part.” He said over to her as he rounded the car and paid the driver before he drove off. ”Feels so weird being back here after seeing so much and being gone for so long. It’s nostalgic for sure.” He stated as he stared off into the path ahead.
Kai asked how far of a trek it would be and there was a sudden painful realization that he hadn’t warned her ahead of time. He turned to face her in a grimaced grin, knowing the news would be less than pleasant. ”About three miles...but don’t worry bout carrying all this. It’ll be enough of an ordeal walking the trail.” He said before throwing the duffle bag on his back and got it centered and comfortable. Then, he raised up the rolling suitcase up by the handle then turned around, letting it go. It strangely remained in the air right where he had left it. Next, he backed up against it with the duffle bag and suddenly both bags dimly flashed blue, becoming locked together.
”If you get tired or I start leaving you behind, let me know and we can take a break, ok?” He said as he faced Kai again, smiling. Her outfit looked great on her too but he was afraid her shoes might tire her out quickly. Shingen was already devising a magical plan to move things along if things got rough.

Kai blinked, her eyes widening as Shingen effortlessly lifted her oversized luggage, his movements fluid and controlled. The soft blue glow of his magic bathed the bags in a faint, ethereal light before they hovered in midair as though weightless. Her heart skipped a beat, both in awe of his abilities and in embarrassment for having packed so much. She felt a warmth rising in her cheeks, a shy pink blush spreading as she fidgeted with the strap of her messenger bag.
"Wow..." she breathed again, her voice softer now, almost lost in the gentle rustling of the bamboo. "Thank you," she added quickly, glancing between the hovering bags and Shingen with wide eyes. He made it look so effortless, like this kind of thing was second nature to him. In contrast, she felt clumsy and unprepared, her fingers tightening their grip on her bag.
"Th-three miles?!" Kai’s voice faltered as the distance sank in. She blanched a little, her pulse quickening. Three miles was... a lot. The most physical activity she ever got was darting between tables at the bakery during a rush, and even that left her breathless sometimes. This, though—this was an entirely different challenge. The warm, humid air clung to her skin, and she could already feel the weight of it settling over her. She wasn’t used to this kind of climate, and the idea of trudging through miles of unfamiliar terrain left her feeling uncertain.
But she wasn’t about to give up before they even started! Kai took a deep breath, adjusting the strap of her bag as if that would somehow prepare her for the trek ahead. She could do this!
As they started down the trail, the bamboo leaves overhead swayed in the breeze, casting soft shadows that danced along the uneven path. The air was thick with the scent of wet earth and bamboo. Kai stuck close behind Shingen, her eyes flitting nervously between the ground and the back of his figure. Each step was a little unsteady, her wedge heels sinking slightly into the soft dirt. The terrain was more challenging than she’d expected, uneven and littered with small rocks and roots that forced her to carefully pick her way forward.
"I hope I don’t slow you down too much," she murmured. Her gaze drifted upward, captivated by the towering bamboo that stretched endlessly above them. There was something deeply alive about this place—the soft rustle of leaves, the occasional birdsong that pierced the quiet, and the snap of twigs underfoot. It felt ancient, like it had been untouched for centuries.

 Shingen Maeda
Making their way up the incline, Shingen began to take in the colors of the forest all over again. It was as if his soul had been thirsting to be back there again. The way the light filtered through the tops of the trees and how the birds would fly off whenever they approached, it all instilled a tranquility that he had long missed. His meditation life had dwindled in comparison to his work and his training. There was no doubt his teacher would tell him that his failures were likely a result of his loss in focus. Although he had progressively become stronger, there had been a building anxiety in him that never seemed to dissipate when he was alone. That was something that had drawn him to Kai. Apart from her incredible ability to perceive emotions and sway the physical condition, she was like a still pond that quieted the larger chaos at hand.
Shingen, would look over his shoulder at Kai close to every five minutes, checking in to see how she was doing. He had to often remind himself to slow down for her but that was the way he was all the time, ever pushing forward wherever he went, no matter who he was with. This time was a bit more serious, Kai having agreed to come along. He wanted to be as accommodating as possible but the more he thought about it, the more he realized they were likely walking into a stressful situation with his family. Although he tried to think about what he would say when he arrived, he didn’t want to be so absent minded as to seem to forget Kai.
”Oh, It’s no problem, Kai. I’m not in a rush or anything.” He stated. Whenever they got to a part of the path where it was wide enough for the both of them, he stepped aside to walk along side her. ”So...” He started as he tried to put things in a better light as to what they were to expect. ”...There might be a few people upset with me when we get there.” He glanced over to her, resting his hands on the straps on the bag on his shoulders. ”I left in a hurry, and well, I wasn’t supposed to leave at all. By this point, Shingen had explained to her that he was the head of his clan, a family of magically gifted that used to function as exorcists dating back to the earliest Japanese emperors. ”As clan head, I was supposed to stay and help lead the Maeda. The reason I left...” He paused.
It all seemed so stupid now as he thought back on it now but also involved the dragon seal, something he hadn’t told anyone about yet, outside of the Maeda. ”...was the fact that they expected so much of me. Never having asked me what I wanted or what I thought. I mean, I know its a big deal but what do you do with all that, you know?” Shingen decided to stop there, not to say too much. She wasn’t there to carry his burdens after all. Even if her bags weren’t the lightest in the world. ”Just saying, ignore all the side ways looks we might get. I’m still the boss.” He said looking her in the eyes with a smile this time to reassure her even if that last part was still debatable.

Kai was huffing, her breaths short and shallow, the weight of the warm air pressing against her chest as she struggled to keep pace. Her legs ached, and the path felt endless. But as Shingen spoke about his family and the burden of expectations, her chest tightened with something else—anxiety. She didn’t want to let him down, not now, not when he was confiding in her.
"Shingen…" she began, her voice thin and breathless, her concern genuine but tinged with nervousness. "That sounds... really hard." She took another step, glancing at him, her mind racing. Was she saying the right thing? Did he need reassurance or just someone to listen? Her thoughts jumbled as her steps slowed slightly, trying to find the balance between offering comfort and catching her breath. "I can’t imagine... what that must’ve been like—having... so many people... expecting so much from you." Her words came out in between pants, why was talking and walking so difficult?! She clung tighter to the strap of her bag, fingers fumbling with the fabric as her thoughts rushed ahead of her. What should she say? Was she offering enough support?
Kai forced herself to keep going, even though her legs felt like jelly. "I mean... I get it, kind of..." she stammered, unsure if her attempt to relate was coming across right. "Not the same, but... when people expect you to be something... and you're not sure if you can..." Kai wiped a bead of sweat from her brow, her fingers brushing across her forehead with a quick, nervous swipe. She’d been regretting the sweater for the past half hour—why had she thought it was a good idea to wear one in this sub-tropical heat? The fabric clung to her skin, sticky and uncomfortable, trapping the warmth against her body. Her cheeks flushed, and not just from the exertion; she felt silly now, her discomfort amplified by how easy Shingen made the whole hike look.
Her glasses kept slipping down her nose, and with each breath, she could feel the weight of the early summer pressing down on her. She pushed her glasses up again, tugging at the collar of her sweater as if loosening it would somehow cool her down. Was she visibly sweating? Her mind raced with self-conscious thoughts, and the heat seemed to magnify them. Glancing at Shingen, she felt even more out of place. He looked completely unfazed by the trek, while she was practically melting. She tugged at her sweater again, feeling the fabric sticking to her back, wishing she could blend into the surroundings before he noticed how uncomfortable she was.
She inhaled sharply, trying to catch her breath again. "You did... what you had to do and- and I don’t think it was... wrong to want to figure things out. Sometimes you need space... to breathe and... to know what you want." Her voice was a little strained now, but the sincerity was there, even if she was fighting to keep up.
Then, she let out a nervous chuckle, her steps faltering slightly as she stumbled over a root but quickly regained her balance. "And... as for the sideways looks..." she paused to take a deep breath, "I’m used to... being the odd one out. So... it won't bother me..." As long as Shingen wasn't the one giving her a side eye, she'd probably be fine. Kai flashed him a small, breathless smile, trying to reassure him.

As Shingen explained himself, Kai was being herself like always. Even though she was an agreeable woman, he didn’t feel right leading her on blindly into a sensitive situation. She reassured him, always so understanding. Kai’s own magic helped give her insight unlike any other but someone less compassionate would have easily shut themselves from the world, distancing themselves from receiving the emotions from every person they neared in public. No, Kai was different. ”Thank you, Kai. Always so understanding.”
Shingen could tell that the climb was really taking a toll on her or at least the pace that they were moving in. The climate on it’s own was enough to draw moisture out of a person and thinking back, he really shouldn’t have let her come dressed the way she did. Shingen began to slow his pace, sweating well enough on his own and already dreading the idea of the rest of the climb. Slowing to a halt, he stepped aside to one of the small clearings along the path, shaded by the trees. ”Let’s take a break. I need some water.” He huffed and began to remove the bags from his back. When he took off the straps, they both seemed to remain right were they were in the air.
Slipping off the camelback, he opened up the valve on the drinking tube and squeezed the bag to squirt water in his mouth. He then offered some to Kai. ”Are you sure you don’t want to change into something cooler? It’s kinda steamy up here.” Shingen watched her, the smile never leaving his face. He wondered if she had brought something like that in one of her luggage bags. He looked down by their legs and two blue blocks of mana appeared then curved into chairs for them to sit in. Although he was pushing himself and could handle the trek, they weren’t in any rush and still had to make it in one piece.
Shingen took a seat and the two bags began to slowly drift laterally between them then down in perfectly straight lines as if on a grid. Once they touched the ground, they became detached and slowly began to slump. ”I do have a way for us to get there quicker, though, if you don’t. It is kind of a journey.” Shingen chuckled nervously. Here was a Captain, humbling himself. A different person than the one at work. All owed to remembering where he came from and why he was doing what he was doing. His imperfections always being at the forefront of his mind also never let him get too full of himself, even if it seemed that way.

Kai slowed her steps as Shingen stopped, grateful for the break, though she didn’t want to admit just how much she needed it. Without hesitation, she slung her messenger bag off her shoulder, letting it drop with a soft thud before leaning heavily against a nearby tree. Her sweater clung uncomfortably to her damp skin, and despite her best efforts to keep up, the humid air had drained her faster than she’d expected. She pushed her glasses up, exhaling slowly, trying to mask just how worn out she felt.
When Shingen offered her water, Kai nodded quickly, reaching for the tube with a small, grateful smile. Just as she was about to take a sip, she froze, her eyes widening as it hit her—sharing the same tube would be like an indirect kiss. Her heart skipped a beat, and her cheeks flared with heat. Her gaze flickered to Shingen, who was still smiling casually, completely unaware of her internal panic.
Kai pulled back from the water tube, suddenly flustered. "Oh! Um—actually, I’m not that thirsty," she stammered, waving her hand nervously as she wiped at her brow again. "I think... I’ll be fine for now," she added, giving him an awkward smile, silently hoping he wouldn’t ask why she had changed her mind so abruptly.
As Shingen mentioned her sweater, Kai tugged at the fabric clinging uncomfortably to her skin. "Sorry... I didn’t think it’d be this warm," she admitted with a nervous laugh. The humidity weighed her down, and her clothes were sticking to her in all the worst ways. But as she glanced around, the realization sank in—there was no real place to change. She shifted awkwardly, suddenly hyper-aware of how exposed the forest felt.
The trees around them offered shade, but not privacy, and her face flushed with renewed embarrassment. "I guess," she mumbled, the words a bit more hesitant now as she glanced around the open space. "But... there's nowhere to, you know..." Her voice trailed off, and she gave another awkward laugh. She supposed she could just take her sweater off, but her undershirt was kind of.. well... meant to stay under clothes...
"There's a quicker way?" She perked up at the mention of an alternative. ♝- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - With: Shingen Where: at the trunk Wearing: something like this but with thick glasses _________

Although Kai did everything she could to seem like she was alright, Shingen could see otherwise. He was already feeling guilty for the circumstances but there was no way he’d force her to suffer through another few miles this way. The way she skipped on the water made him wonder if she rather have her own sanitized bottle, something he wished he would have brought along. When he asked her about changing into something else, she understandably pointed out there was no decent place for her to make the change. Shingen smiled and turned his head to the bamboo behind him and a wall of them began to bend towards them, creating an arch and digging into the ground. Then, a thing blue barrier appeared near teh base of another bundle, toppling them as they were severed. As they fell, Shingen encapsulated each one and began to arrange them like rectangular walls in front and behind the open sides of the arch, driving them into the ground as well.
”That should work, right?” He asked, looking back to Kai. The other part he referred to was a bit more experimental and required his focus but it was something he should be able to pull off for short distances. ”Yeah! I should be able to carry us upwards magically. Not quite a magic carpet’s ride but something like it.” He grinned. If she decided to forgo the wardrobe change, he wouldn’t be opposed to it. She looked cute in what she had on, like always, and it might be cooler the further up they went.

Kai blinked in surprise as Shingen worked, her eyes widening as she watched the bamboo bend and twist, forming a makeshift changing area. The slender green stalks shifted gracefully, weaving together like a natural cocoon. The space was small but private, a thoughtful gesture that made her heart swell with appreciation. "Oh… wow," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, awe filling her tone. The way he effortlessly manipulated nature to accommodate her needs left her momentarily speechless. "Thank you," she added softly, a small, grateful smile tugging at her lips. The gesture warmed her, though she still felt a little awkward about the situation.
Her smile faltered, though, as Shingen mentioned flying. "F-flying?" Her stomach twisted at the mere thought, a vivid memory of the stressful plane ride flooding back to her. Being stuck in that contained metal tube had been terrifying enough—every bump of turbulence sent her heart racing, and at least then, she’d been secured by a seatbelt, surrounded by walls that kept her from falling out at any second. But the idea of flying without those protections? In the open air, where nothing but magic separated her from plummeting to the ground? It felt so much worse. Her face paled, and she struggled to keep her composure.
"I... I don’t know if I’m really cut out for flying," she admitted, her voice quieter now, betraying the growing fear that coiled inside her like a tightly wound spring.
She shifted uneasily, glancing at the ground beneath her feet as if it might suddenly give way. Her mind raced with images of tumbling through the air, the wind roaring in her ears as the ground rushed up to meet her. "I- um, I prefer to stick to the ground... if- if that’s okay?" she added with a nervous smile and looked up at him hopefully, trying to laugh off her fear, though the worry clouding her eyes was impossible to hide. "I can get changed fast, I promise." She offered, as if that would somehow convince him it was better to put up with how slow she was.

Shingen thoroughly enjoyed seeing Kai’s wonder grow as he manipulated the trees nearby. There was a time where he could barely maintain a simple shape made up of his own mana. His current ability was something he should be proud of and yet it was overshadowed by what he carried. The sense of total helplessness was enough to crush any person and it’s apparent inevitable end, though only fabled, hung over his head as well.
At the mention of flying, Kai became progressively nervous. While Kai was normally one to worry, this time seemed to bring out a hardline avoidance to the suggestion. At first, Shingen seemed to worry but as she looked to choose the harder journey, he smiled and chuckled. Risking appearing rude with his reaction, he looked away to comment.”It’s not like I’d drop you or anything.” He more or less muttered, taking another squirt from his water bladder.
Turning in his seat, he gave Kai as much privacy as he could. He began thinking of ways to formulate a platform in a shape most reassuring to her but pressing the issue might just make things worse. The image of a replicated wooden rocking horse came to mind but Shingen only shook his head to dispel it and how silly it would be. By the time she was done changing, she would come out to be greeted by Shingen entirely encapsulated in one of his mana cubes, floating above the ground a few feet. He had his hands casually in his pockets, looking relaxed and even shrugged. ”What about something like this? You know these things are practically bulletproof, right?” He then began to float the cube along the ground in circles before lowering it to the ground and dropping himself off.

Kai took a deep breath as Shingen turned to give her some privacy, her heart still racing from the earlier conversation. She fumbled through her bag, pulling out the cooler clothes she had packed—something lighter, cuter, with delicate lace and small bows that would hopefully make the oppressive heat a little more bearable. She quickly bundled her sweater and undershirt together, switching into sneakers, though her mind wasn’t entirely on the clothes.
Her thoughts kept drifting back to Shingen. The way his face had fallen when she rejected the idea of flying had tugged at her, making her second-guess her hard stance. She didn’t want him to think she didn’t trust him—it wasn’t that at all. She did trust him, and she wanted him to know that. But the fear of being up in the air, untethered, still clawed at her.
When she stepped out, her breath caught at the sight of Shingen floating a few feet above the ground, completely encased in a shimmering mana cube. His casual posture, hands in his pockets, made it seem almost effortless. He looked so relaxed, as if being suspended in the air was the most natural thing in the world.
Kai watched as he floated the cube in lazy circles, her eyes following the movement. It was reassuring in a way she hadn’t expected. The cube was solid, secure, and seeing him inside it, perfectly fine, made her fear ease, just a little. She bit her lip, glancing between him and the cube as she worked up the nerve to speak. "Would you..." she started, her voice soft but earnest. "Would you ride with me...?" She hesitated, wringing her hands together. Her gaze dropped to the ground, her voice quieter now. "Like... together?" The words hung between them, and Kai shifted on her feet, hoping she hadn’t just made things more awkward. She really did want to try.

It seemed that his little demonstration had been enough to lift Kai’s fears as she contemplated the new way of transportation. He had to admit, the initial way he had in mind was creating platforms under their feet in order to carry them up the mountain but this method was far more secure, indeed. After a moment of thinking about it, Kai spoke up, albeit bashfully. She asked him if he could ride along with her. Shingen grinned and nearly chuckled again as if her question had been ridiculous. ”Of course I’ll ride with you. Imagine me showing up with a caged girl trailing behind me like a prisoner!” He said before looking over to her luggage again and raising it into the air over him. He extended his right hand out to her as the luggage made contact with a new cube construction that began to form from ceiling to the floor leaving only the front side open for her.
There was no one sweeter that Shingen could think of to ride side by side with. And although he knew it was for reassurance and security, Shingen still counted himself lucky. Once she was in, he would sneak his arm around her waist to act as a seatbelt, and lift them off nearly five or so feet from the ground to account for the incline. Holes were built in around the cube to allow for air flow and the ceiling was more concentrated, catching the sunlight like a dark blue tint to keep them cooler. He tried to keep focus on their trajectory as they travelled smoothly up the trail in order to try to get his heartrate lower. Being so close to Kai was having an effect but he would be damned if he let it slip. There was nothing from stopping the appearance of the beginnings of a sly smirk in the corner of his mouth.
Their speed would begin to rise as time went on. The turns to the path weren’t very sharp so he didn’t have to account from slowing to take them. The air that flowed through at a faster rate was also welcome, cooling in an otherwise semi humid environment. The more that they climbed, the more stone steps would line their path, showing signs of nearing civilization. The natural fauna greeted them at every turn but there was a strange tranquility in the absence of all other human life. Nature had a a meditative effect on the mind, refreshing ones thoughts after being caged and forced to work day in and day out in the city. Shingen truly enjoyed being away from work. The farther the better.
Eventually, the sight of a gate came into view up ahead. A simple wall with a single gate at the top of a set of steps. Slowing them as they reached the top, Shingen would land them just before the doors. He knew there was no going further without permission. Access would have to be granted from the other side to be let in. ”We’ll have to get permission to go any further.” Shingen explained, scanning the area as he began to let everything gently down, including Kai. ”Shouldn't be long though.” He looked to her with a polite smile. His eyes moved over the tree tops and into the darker areas of the forest. When he saw nothing of note, he decided to sit at the top of the steps and close his eyes in meditation.

Kai hesitated, staring at Shingen’s outstretched hand, her heart fluttering wildly in her chest. Should she take it? What if she didn’t, and he thought she was rude? The thought alone sent a wave of panic rushing through her, twisting her stomach into knots. She bit her lip, unsure of what to do, and finally took a small, shaky breath. With a clumsy motion, she reached out and grasped his hand, already bracing herself for the emotional tidal wave that always followed contact.
She tried—really tried—to keep her empath abilities under control and form a wall against what was coming, but something slipped past her defenses: A deep hunger that radiated from Shingen. It wasn’t the kind of hunger she understood, though. It was darker, more primal, like a need that had been buried and suppressed for far too long. Her breath caught in her throat, and she quickly let go of his hand, scooting a little closer to him for "lift-off" under the guise of bracing herself. But her pulse betrayed her nerves, and her heart felt like it was about to leap out of her chest.
And then—oh gods—his arm slid around her waist, pulling her snugly against him. Kai’s breath hitched, and all thoughts of flying vanished instantly. The warmth of his arm, the way it held her so securely, made her mind whirl. Her fear of heights? Gone. In its place was a flood of overwhelming emotions she wasn’t prepared to deal with. His touch sent sparks through her, making it impossible to focus on anything else.
Her hands, unsure of where to go, curled awkwardly in front of her as she clung to her own fingers, twisting them nervously. Every few moments, her elbow brushed against his forearm, and each touch sent her senses into overdrive. Flashes of his emotions hit her—confidence, sharp and unwavering; focus, so intense it almost made her dizzy; and something else, something that felt like attraction. But... no, that had to be her imagination. She was definitely reading that wrong. Right? Right. Of course, Kai was the only one thinking about his strong biceps bulging under his shirt, the fabric stretched just enough to show off the defined curve of his muscles. The shirt was slightly open at the collar, revealing a tantalizing glimpse of his toned chest, where the faint lines of muscle split down the center, hinting at the strength beneath his calm exterior. The way his skin glistened faintly in the light, just enough to make her wonder how it would-
"Huh?" Kai suddenly realized Shingen was talking to her, but she’d been too caught up in her own flustered thoughts to hear a word he said. Her eyes darted up to his face, wide and startled, cheeks blazing red. She looked like she’d just been caught doing something she wasn’t supposed to—like a kid with her hand in a cookie jar.
Oh... Oh! They’d arrived. Of course, she knew that. Totally knew that. "Right, um... are you hungry then?" she blurted out, not fully processing the situation. She could feel how hungry he was. That hunger she sensed before—it was still there, gnawing and intense. Whatever it was, it made hangry seem like a mild term.
Before Shingen could respond, Kai awkwardly scrambled toward where he’d set down her luggage, desperate for an excuse to hide her face and cool down the embarrassment that was burning through her. She couldn’t face him right now—not with the way her thoughts were running wild and the confusing emotions she’d picked up from him still buzzing in her head. She pretended to busy herself with her bags, even though she had no idea what she was actually doing. Feed the man. Just feed the starving man, she repeated to herself, hoping it would give her something to focus on other than the places her mind had gone.
