(Mason is an NPC with approval to play.)

Some days, Casey wondered if he was living in a dream. A wonderful, perfect dream. The past few months had been filled with more joy than he could ever remember in his life.

It had been sad to take down the Christmas decorations, but Casey made sure to take pictures and had them printed so they could start their first photo album together. He made sure to write down his favorite memories on the backs of each photo, and added extra pages when he ran out of space. He didn’t want to forget any moment of these good times they shared.

His lease then expired and, as they’d discussed doing, Casey moved in with Ariel. With the help of Morgan, of course. And if he and Ariel happened to take a few more breaks than they really needed so they could admire how strong and capable Morgan was, well…

The apartment was cozy and warm. Casey made sure not to encroach on any of Ariel’s things, and having two beds meant they could set up the bedroom so they didn’t have to share if they wanted their own space.

But more often than not, they ended up curled up in each other’s arms. And that meant more opportunities for Morgan to spend the night, since they had an extra bed. However, Casey couldn’t recall a single night where both beds were occupied. Unless Harrison counted. Sometimes she got tired of laying across legs.

Morgan put in a good word for him at the park headquarters when an opening became available, and after a really awkward but enthusiastic interview, Casey was brought on as a park ranger in training. He cried for what felt like a day straight after that, he was so grateful.

The only thing that he was uncertain of was the tension between the three of them. He cared deeply for both Ariel and Morgan, and couldn’t imagine a life without them. But he could also tell that they cared just as much for each other. And that was a good thing! Casey wanted them to be happy, and it made sense that they would be drawn to each other since they were both a little older than he was. And he had Harrison! It wasn’t as though they would just stop hanging out with him, but he could understand if they wanted more time to themselves.

It broke his heart to think about, but he was trying to be realistic. And Ariel and Morgan were perfect for each other, anyway.

And it was what he was thinking about when he saw something strange while he and Harrison were out for a jog. It was a puppy, all by itself, in the middle of the jogging path. It was a little later in the evening, so there weren’t usually very many people out. The summer sun meant a longer time to be out, but the path lights were starting to turn on.

Harrison was of course excited to meet this new puppy, but Casey was worried about it just being out and alone, especially since he knew there were owls and other large birds around. And it had a collar.

“Hey buddy, where’d you come from?” he asked as he knelt down to gather the puppy in his arms and keep Harrison from jumping up to greet the new friend. It didn’t look as though there was any contact information on the collar but… it was just strange.

"Hey! Please, don't let her get away!"

A tall, handsome man darted out of the treeline. His brown hair was already tousled from what appeared to be chasing after the puppy. There were many paths in the area but there were plenty of trees separating them. He was wearing fashionable jogging clothes and was running with a leash balled up in his hand.

The puppy's tail wagged enthusiastically and she half-turned her head and let out a sweet little yapping sound when the man trotted towards them. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry. This has never happened before. I mean--she just came home with me yesterday, this is our first time out for a walk. He opened his palm to reveal a jammed clip on the leash. "She tugged and it just snapped. She's so small, I lost her immediately."

It didn't help that there was heavy underbrush here, and she was dark enough to have blended in with the ground.

"Thank you so much for grabbing her, I almost had a heart attack!"

When he heard the man calling, Casey immediately made sure he kept a hand on Harrison’s leash, close to her collar so she couldn’t jump on him too. The puppy was easily held in one hand, close to his chest, and he stood up to offer the man a sympathetic smile.

“She’s so cute, I’m glad I could catch her for you! Wow, that’s really bad luck with those clips, I don’t think I’ve ever had one break before,” he gasped in surprise at how something like that was even possible. Especially since the leash looked so new. And the puppy was so little.

But… anything was possible, right?

“Is this your first time with a puppy?” he asked, of course interested in the puppy, and Harrison was wagging her tail enthusiastically to meet this tall, handsome man. Oh… Casey was grateful that it was dark. Maybe the flush to his cheeks wasn’t so obvious.

The man raised his brows incredulously, like he couldn’t believe they’d broken either.

“Yeah, I’m sorry. Is it so obvious?” he asked. Obviously, this was an embarrassing situation. He covered it with a little laugh and held out his hand to retrieve his puppy, even though she was already wiggling and licking at the air like she needed to lick Casey’s face.

“Yours seems really friendly, what’s her name?” His hand stretched out like he intended to pet her too but he had to stop. “Sorry, I mean–is it okay to pet her? I’m still really new to this whole thing. I was afraid of dogs up until a few months ago. I’d never seen one so small when I met her, but she and her siblings were just in a box outside. They all looked really sick, I didn’t know what to do. I mean, I couldn’t just leave them there. But, um. She and her siblings had this thing, I guess. Parvo. It’s really dangerous for puppies. They told me she wouldn’t make it, but–you know. Here she is. I didn’t mean to keep her. I just felt bad. She was the only one who made it. And the vet kept calling me for updates, and, well.”

He gestured vaguely. “Look at that little face.” And those big paws. She was young, and probably smaller than she should have been for a dog that was old enough to go home.

“She didn’t have anyone. I didn’t want her to be alone. So,” he exhaled. “This has been kind of a ‘crash course with having a dog’. I don’t suppose you’ve got any tips for me, do you?”

Oh… the puppy was so cute, and this man was so friendly and handsome. Casey tried not being obvious about it, but he knew he was definitely blushing. Did his voice get a little higher as he spoke? Probably. How embarrassing.

“Oh! That’s horrible. That’s really kind of you to adopt her. She’s perfect in every way. Oh! This is Harrison. Yeah, you can pet her! She’s really friendly. Um, she’s my first dog too, but I got really lucky with how relaxed she is. I mean, I guess she sometimes gets into my books, but I can’t be mad at her, and they’re all second hand anyway.”

Stop oversharing, Casey--

“But, um, I guess if I have any tips? Uh… I guess positive reinforcement is good? I mean it works for me. So I figured it would work for Harrison too,” he laughed. Awkwardly. Oh, he was making a fool of himself in front of this very nice, puppy saving, handsome man.

“I’m Casey,” he squeaked and quickly cleared his throat. He hadn’t meant to just blurt it out like that. “I mean… does she have a name yet?” Like that was a good transition…

The man paused and looked at Casey like he’d just said something incredibly interesting. “Casey, you said? Wow.” He laughed, partly amused and partly embarrassed. “You’re not going to believe this.”

He knelt down so he could gently pet Harrison’s head. He was careful when he scratched behind her ear. “I love that name. That’s actually what I was thinking about calling her. My name’s Mason. I thought ‘Casey and Mason’ sounded pretty good together, but now I’m going to have to think of something else.”

As he was crouched on the ground, he flashed a smile up at Casey. “I mean, I still think they sound good together. But I can’t just borrow your name, now. What are the odds?”

He glanced over his shoulder contemplatively and hummed. “Unless I was supposed to run into you today. Hey–actually, you’re going to think I’m crazy but I can’t help it. Today’s been kind of a crazy day so far, so let me ask you a weird question–do you believe in coincidences or do you believe in fate?”

Casey stared at the handsome man -- Mason -- and he was pretty sure his face had flushed dark enough to be noticeable beyond the excuse of exertion from jogging.

“Oh! I mean. I like how that sounds, too.” He was trying not to stumble over his words. He was still holding the puppy and Harrison’s leash, but now he felt awkward and giddy and incredibly flustered, but he wasn’t sure if that was a bad thing, yet.

“I mean… I’m not sure. I guess I like to think things happen for a reason. Kind of like when Pongo gets Roger to run into Anita-- oh… sorry, um… One hundred and one dalmatians. I like dogs, so I like that movie,” he sheepishly admitted.

“But, um… not that… little Casey was trying to make that happen! Oh! I’m just joking. If it’s weird to call her that now-- I mean, I don’t mind if you do!”

He knew he was rambling, and Mason probably thought he was pretty childish. After all, Mason looked like he was very put together and didn’t need to waste his time with some high school drop out.

Mason’s face was gentle, like there was no judgment to be had. He laughed, more when little Casey squirmed. Finally, he reached out for her and cradled her in his arms. She flopped immediately, satisfied and looking exhausted after her little run. “Oh, I don’t think I can. I might get the two of you mixed up. I haven’t seen that movie in a long time,” he admitted.

“I used to watch movies more often but life got in the way. Plus, I’ve never really been the sort to enjoy a movie alone. Although–”

He looked at Harrison, at the puppy, at Casey.

“...I love watching movies with company. I don’t suppose you happen to be free any time this week? Let me treat you to dinner or something. I don’t know what’s playing in theaters, but do you and Harrison want to come over and watch One Hundred and One Dalmatians with us? I mean–if things happen for a reason…”

He let his voice trail off and then shrugged before flashing a most winning smile.

“I believe in fate.”

Casey laughed, because it was silly to think that Mason could mix the two of them up, especially since this was just a one-time run in, right?

But then Mason continued.

And he asked if he had any free time that week.

To treat him to dinner or something.

Because Mason believed in fate.

Casey’s heart had pretty much stopped at this point. All of the blood in his body was surely now in his face. He opened his mouth a few times, but nothing came out. He was just frozen. Feeling stupid.

“Okay,” he squeaked, because when was the last time anyone had asked him out? Probably never, now that he was thinking about it. He was sure that Mason would realize why no one had ever asked him out before really quickly, but Mason was so sweet and handsome and he had such a cute puppy.

There was a pang of sadness in his heart. Being neighbors, and now roommates with Ariel wasn’t really dating. He wanted--

No… that was unfair to Ariel, who now had Morgan in his life. And Morgan was so good to him. To both of them. But Casey knew that out of the three, he was the odd one out. He had the least experience of… life in general, especially since he was younger than them. Not by a lot! But why would either of them pick him when they had each other? And he didn’t want to lose either of them so--

If he had someone else, and Ariel and Morgan officially got together, then maybe Casey wouldn’t be left alone.

Besides, Mason seemed really nice!

“Yeah, I mean. Sure, if you’d like!”

Mason grinned. “Perfect. I was hoping you’d say yes. Here.”

He adjusted himself and his puppy carefully but produced his cell phone almost effortlessly. It took him only a few seconds to pull up the contact list in his phone and he passed it over.

“Go ahead and plug in your information. I’ll text you when I get home and send you all the info. We can find a day that works for us. You’ll have to tell me what you want to eat, too. I’m a pretty good chef, just saying. I’ll make something so good you keep coming back for more.”

Casey wasn’t sure what was going on. He felt flustered and giddy, and he made sure he was careful when he took Mason’s phone from him to clumsily plug in his information.

His hands were shaking. Wow, he felt really silly and hoped Mason wouldn’t notice. Maybe he was too distracted by the puppy and Harrison, who was being such a good girl and twapping her tail against him in her excitement over meeting a new friend.

“I’ll eat pretty much anything, so uh… yeah! Okay, um. I should probably be going then. So you can go home too I mean,” he laughed awkwardly as he handed Mason back his phone and stumbled a bit as he tried turning one way, but realized Harrison’s leash was stopping him from turning all the way, so he shuffled back around.

“Okay I’ll talk to you soon!”

He knew he was in over his head, but despite the fact that his heart was aching, he thought this was probably the best outcome anyone could ask for. A chance to stay out of Ariel and Morgan’s way while maybe finding happiness with someone for himself along the way.
