The first night at Mary’s place had been…all right! She hadn’t really slept well, it was far too quiet without the soft noises of the waves moving up against the shore, but…there had been some sleep…eventually.
Of course…the worst part of everything was the fact that she had tried to go back up to Magion for sleep…and she found she couldn’t.
That had caused her to do a lot of pacing and worrying…and if she hadn’t been afraid of her new friends kicking her out…she would have kicked down Mary’s door and asked for assistance…but she waited until daybreak.
And then began pacing the halls, hoping that the Knight would have answers...that she would have advice as to why Magion couldn’t go home again! She had gone once! Was the phone broken? Was she never going to get back to her wonderful island?
Finally, finally she saw Mary, exiting her room and Damaris ran over, face creased in concern. “I have an issue! I tried to get home last night, I couldn’t sleep but I couldn’t get there! The phone didn’t work! Mary what do I do!”

Mary yawned, stretching her arms over her head as she left her room. She wore a thin strapped tank top and sweatpants, the faded scar spelling 'HOPE' lopsided across her collarbones in clear view. She blinked at Damaris as the blue haired girl ran over, green eyes taking a moment to focus. Mary hadn't been a morning person since the year she'd spend in the Bifrost, and it took her longer than usual to find her voice.
"You can't... go... home?" she asked rather dumbly, idly scratching at her scar. Can't go home... can't go home... Mary blinked again and smacked her own cheeks to try to wake herself up more. She'd encountered a similar problem when she'd started out as a Page, if she was remembering that correctly. Chronos, that was a long time ago now...
"Oh... yeah uh... there's like, a 'cool down' period? I think - yawn - because of the Chaos here maybe? If you aren't an Eternal Senshi or Knight, you can only go once every two or three weeks?" Mary yawned again, starting to walk towards the kitchen and where the tea would be. "I think I can go a few times per week due to my connection to my Wonder and being a Transcendent Knight?"
She sort of hoped that Damaris would just... follow her, because she needed tea if she had any chance of being any help.

“Wait…so I…I have to wait before I can go back again?”
Damaris followed Mary, not really knowing where they were going, but if her friend and benefactress was going somewhere, she was going to follow…and maybe…she would have an answer as to how to get back up to Magion…
“So I’m…just stuck here until I can go back? That…that doesn’t seem fair…I was…I was there for years! So many years and now I’m…barred from returning?”
Maybe…maybe the technology she was given was simply faulty…maybe…she had to find a different Mauvian and they could help…or maybe…
Maybe she was just…stuck here. “...I don’t want to not be able to go home…”

Mary led her into the kitchen as she started to rant (and probably pout) behind her. She flicked the on button on the electric kettle, then pulled it off the base to fill it with water. Kettle replaced, she turned it back on and opened the cabinet above it. The kitchen was in the galley kitchen style, with cabinets and appliances on both sides of a modestly sized space. At the far end was the breakfast nook, with a worn wooden table in front of two open windows. Her grandmother was not in her usual chair, which probably meant she was out in the gardens this morning. Early for her, wasn't it?
Oh, it was like 11 in the morning, she realized, blinking at the digital clock on the stove.
Mary pulled down two mugs, one with a rainbow on it, and the other with a sailboat. "Yeah it's... a thing. I've never - yawn - really gotten a good answer as to why?" She pulled out an english breakfast tea bag for herself, and selected a mild tea - chamomile - for Damaris.
The kettle began to softly boil as she put the mugs on the table, pushing aside one of her grams' many knitting projects for space.
"More like... restricted, I guess? It didn't bother me much as a page, but I can see how it might seem unfair and like something's broken if you've been on your world this whole time," said Mary, puttering around the kitchen for a bowl of fruit, some muffins and table settings for both of them.
"I can say from experience that things don't drastically change between visits. Since you're the only one that can access it via your phone, no one can go mess with things while you're gone. I'm sorry that you're stuck here though..." The kettle boiled, clicking off automatically, and she brought it to the table and pour hot water into the mugs.

“Well…that seems very unfair. We…I…I don’t care if it changes…I want to go back to sleep…the bed you gave me was wonderful! But…I missed my hammock…I missed my ocean...it’s…”
Damaris swallowed and took a seat, fretting and fiddling with her long hair. “It’s both…too loud and too quiet here…there are…strange…”
She searched for the right word. “Buzzings? Screamings? Noises…but nothing that I want. Nothing that I want to hear! I want my waves…why are there no waves here, Mary…this isn’t…fair…”
And it wasn’t fair…but. Her eyes fell on the food that was put in front of her, and she hummed, reaching out and taking hold of a yellow one. It was long and very smooth. She took a bite and shook her head, flinging it away. “...What is this”

Mary curled her hands around the mug and as Damaris continued to talk. She was listening! Really! She just needed her tea before her brain would start kicking into gear. Hmmm, missing the ocean and waves... they could do something about that with a white noise machine. Probably get some sort of scent diffuse if she needed the smell of the sea too?
She lifted her mug, eyes glancing down at the liquid and lightly blowing on it. Green eyes flicked back up and she blinked, mug still awkwardly in the air.
"Damaris did you... do you not... you gotta..." she started and stopped in pure confusion. She glanced between the banana, teeth marks in the yellow peel, then at Damaris, then back at the banana.
How the mug of hot tea did not end up all over her or the table, she didn't know, not with the way her shoulders were shaking with barely contained laughter.
"Oh my Chronos, Damaris... That's.... that's a banana. You have to peel it first before uh... biting it," she said, grabbing another one and peeling the yellow rind back. She used her fingers to pull off the tip of the banana and handed it to her. "This is the part you eat."
Mary then hid her mouth behind her mug, still trying to not laugh at this poor girl who was obviously homesick and somehow had never seen anything like a banana before.

“Oh…” Damaris put down the ‘banana’ that she had tried to bite into and instead, took hold of the one that Mary peeled the skin off of.
Carefully, and with more than a little mistrust, she took a bite of the soft yellow flesh and paused, pleased that it didn’t feel…bad in her mouth. The flavor was like nothing she could describe and she looked at Mary with suddenly bright eyes. “...This is delicious! How did you know to remove it’s skin? Is this something you do for everything on Earth? Remove the skin before consumption?”
She supposed it was a good way to live…and it was what she had done to the fish before eating them…
When there still had been fish to eat…but.
“What do you do with the skins?”

Mary smiled at her, and grabbed a muffin to unwrap and start munching on. "It sort of depends on what it is. We peel most large fruit, root vegetables, and some herbs. We skin fish and meat. Most smaller fruit doesn't need to be peeled. And I only know to do this because my grandmother taught me; it's something you learn growing up and when you start cooking." Explaining common place things to someone was both fascinating and also very odd. It brought up so many questions of just how life on Magion was before Chaos took it over.
"As for missing the ocean and the annoying crickets, we can get you a white noise machine or app on your phone that will play sounds of the ocean and waves. We can also swap out the bed for a hammock. I know it's not... home but we can make it a little bit more homey?" She smiled again, this time all genuine joy and happiness. She didn't want Damaris to feel out of place, or uncomfortable here, especially if she was locked to only going to her world once a month or so for a while yet.
Mary pulled the remainder of the inside of the banana out of the peel. "We either throw the skins away or put them into compost. We go the compost route here; free fertilizer for the garden!"

Damaris listened and finished eating the banana, watching Mary for a moment before she picked up the one she had tried to simply bite, and peeled the skin from it before eating it as well. “They are so much better without the skin…it’s so fascinating. I didn’t do much cooking back home…Magion…there were people who worked, but…it was a place of fun! I was the Senshi…I am the Senshi so I always welcomed visitors…meals and treats were prepared for me by others…”
The smile on her face looked sad for a moment, but another bite of the banana wiped it away. “I would like that! I did enjoy the bed! I would like to keep it…could we put a hammock in too? Is that possible? And…there are noises we can bring in to sound like an ocean?”
She wondered if it would be a bard in her room making the sounds. She wasn’t sure but…it was an interesting thought.
There were always talented bards and musicians on the islands and ships on Magion!
She didn’t know what Mary meant by compost but she held out the banana peel, hoping to be helpful! “Free fertilizer!”

"My grams taught me how to cook, but usually I just eat her cooking," said Mary with a giggle. She finally felt more like a human and let out a happy little sigh with a wiggle of her shoulders.
"Yes! There are objects that can produce sounds that mimic the ocean, or a busy street, or anything really." Mary folded up the muffin wrapper to throw away. Then Damaris handed her the banana peel with an exclamation of 'free fertilizer!' and Mary just lost it.
She laughed, a clear sound full of joy and mirth. Chronos she hadn't really laughed like this in a few years. Damaris' naivete about how Earth worked was absolutely charming.
A smile looked even better on her face, to be honest.
Cute.
