Of the many reasons Asuka was glad to be a Senshi, the temperature regulation that came from being in powered form was definitely on the list. It would be far too hot and sticky to be outside if she was Reiko, but as Asuka, even considering the fancy layered black uniform, she was honestly doing pretty great. She'd parked herself on a bench and brought a notebook to scribble down some video idea notes while her mirrorwraith--tonight, a long, slender lizardlike creature with short little limbs--whirled through the civilians around her, and honestly, it was a pretty comfy setup.

Her feet rested on the bench, and she leaned against the arm, humming and noting down some ideas for a deep dive on the reservoir cryptid--she'd avoided it because she was pretty sure it was just a youma or something, but it was starting to become a running joke on her channel, so she might as well do...something with it.

For the most part, she was oblivious, though she did occasionally look up to see if her wraith had returned with energy to deposit. So far, though, it was still stealing its weird, lizardy fill.

Dunnottar was not much of a hummer or a whistler. Patrolling didn't quite bore him enough to fall back on something like that, something that would expose him audibly to any enemies who weren't paying close attention to their aura sense. The last thing he wanted was to lose any edge against the forces of Chaos that he could gain. Instead, he focused on breathing exercises, keeping himself alert and oxygenated in case he needed to leap into a fight quickly.

When he noticed the mirror wraith lizard slinking around, he quieted his footsteps and followed it hurriedly, noting how fat it was with energy it had clearly consumed. Damn this thing. Damn whatever Chaos Mirror brat that had summoned it, too.

Soon enough, he approached the girl, clearly a Dark Mirror Senshi, the one setting off the aura alarm bells in his head, and readied himself for a fight.

"I think you should go home," he growled as he drew near. "It's not safe out here for energy thieves."

Asuka really, really hated interlopers. Especially annoying ones, who came in all "oooh, I'm so big and dangerous." He was literally a level below her, she could tell, and so it was with a very tired huff that she closed her notebook and tucked it and her pen into subspace before turning her attention to him.

A Page. All in pinky pastels. Her eyes flicked up and down, and she made her most unimpressed face. If she'd met him elsewhere--well. She probably would have been uncomfortable. Intimidated even. But here? Now? This was just....boring. She didn't even bother to get up off her bench.

"You call it theft, I call it maintaining Mirrorpsace," she said, disinterestedly. "You don't want to pick a fight with me. Trust me on that. Turn around and walk away before I make you have a very unpleasant night, little Page."

Hopefully she sounded very scary. That would at least mean....something.

Dunnottar raised an eyebrow in sheer disbelief at her nonchalant attitude, the way she simply slowly put away her drawing materials before turning to him. The absolute audacity of her just... not caring at all!

"It doesn't have to be a fight," he said, crossing his arms and glaring at her—he was all too aware of their power difference, even if he thought he might be able to get a physical advantage over her. He didn't want to fight, but if he had to...

"You might also go home before things get ugly," he continued. "I'm sure you don't want to have to fight, even if you're sure you'll win."

Asuka sighed. The most put-upon sigh it was possible to sigh. And with a heaving huff, she moved so that she was sitting up and properly on the bench, looking the Knight in the face.

"No," she said. "I have no issue with a fight. It is you who should be very afraid, tonight."

She smiled, in the most unsettling way she could manage, tilting her head to the side, and whispered "Onryo's Curse" in a way she was one hundred percent certain sounded eerie.

And then, she let her magic flow out around her, and waited. Honestly, she was betting he'd run. And if he didn't, she was stronger than him, physical difference or no--she was pretty sure she could sucker punch him and make him really regret being so ******** annoying about this.

But it was really a matter of waiting and seeing. How accustomed was he, she wondered, to magic like hers? Magic that got in your head and clawed at the deepest fears inside you?

Quote:
Asuka speaks the name of her attack, and is briefly surrounded by a thick, cold fog. When she emerges, she has the form of a classic onryo -- long, stringy hair, bloodstained funeral kimono, porcelain-white skin -- and anyone in an 8-foot radius around her will relive a memory in which they caused harm to another person (always larger wrongs at this stage), paired with a feeling that Asuka is here to revenge that wrong. The magic lasts for 35 seconds at this stage, and can be used twice per battle.

The hair on the back of Dunnottar's neck stood up as she spoke her magic like some kind of curse from a witch in a horror movie. He was determined not to let whatever it was affect him—this was just creepy effects, he was sure; there was no need to freak out.

And yet.

The fog enveloped them, again like some horror movie, and he took a step back, trying to see whatever was about to happen before it happened.

He had no such luck.

The creature emerged from the dog, and despite knowing this was just magical horror movie effects, his chest tightened with a fear he hadn't felt in a long time. His breathing nearly stopped entirely. A memory surfaced, vivid in his mind's eye.

"You," he'd seethed then, filled with an incomprehensible rage, an unfair rage.

"But... what did I do, gege?" Lanting, backing away, eyes wide with fright, with dear, because Dunnottar scared him.

"Don't gege me! You cold blooded murderer!"

Memory-Lanting's eyes filled with tears as Dunnottar turned.

The memory faded and he abruptly realized that the terrible being before him was still there, plainly waiting for him to understand something—understand what? Understand—oh, ********, that was why she was there. To take her revenge. Lanting's revenge. He was going to die all over again because of his temper.

His knees shook as he turned, this time for real, and fled into the night, trying to escape the truth before him.

Eventually, he slowed to a stop, sitting heavily on the roof wall of a building he'd leapt on. The magic had faded as he'd come up here to get away, and he was angry with himself. Magic couldn't be fought easily, so he wasn't mad about that.

It was about the memory that had surfaced. He didn't feel as though he'd deserved to be forgiven yet, and he hadn't realized that was the source of the continual sharp pain of the memory, why Asuka's magic had had such a strong effect.

He needed.... He needed to figure that out. To do better, somehow. Where the ******** was this even coming from? He'd... He'd been alone too long. Now it was all getting to his head, having a sort-of friend again. Or trying to, anyway.

He shivered, then finished the long walk home, thinking.
