Quote:
The Caves (5) : To any explorers visiting the new Reservoir, they may find that just a bit away from the sandy water are a set of caves. Some of these connect back to the lake, but others rapidly plunge into darkness. It wouldn't be hard to get lost in here, but thankfully there are some very odd lights to help guide you out. If you turn off your light down some of these dark paths, you may find yourself surrounded by glowing pastel lights. A closer inspection reveals that you seem to be looking at some sort of glowing caterpillars. An internet search will reveal that Destiny City scientists have been researching the strange, unnamed creatures, but the articles are very limited. If you take them out of the cave they seem to shrivel up almost immediately. They’re neat, but clearly meant to be stay in their natural habitat.

“It’s supposed to be this way,” said Naeria, glancing at the article she had downloaded onto her ComTech from the Earth Internet. It featured a messily drawn circle over a part of the official map of the reservoir, which, best she could tell, they were drawing near.

“Do you see anything?” she asked Andreyia. Looking up from the trail, she didn’t immediately see signs of the caves that were meant to be in the area, but that might be a good thing. The more visible places like this were, the more likely humans would come vandalize them.

She’d taken a tour of a cavern once, wondering what species Earth might be hiding underground. The whole time she’d been blinded by artificial lights, and told to look at stalactites that were covered in algae that was never meant to be there. The small holes she found in the woods sometimes, while not as grand, were much better, and she hoped that this might be similar.

Especially since it seemed to hold rare caterpillar species.

Andreiya could have been very insufferable at the reservoir if he hadn't also been doing a good job of keeping his mouth shut. He trudged across the squeaky sand like it was a trap waiting to swallow him up. He shriveled under the sun like it was a weapon aimed and firing directly at him. Every bird made him jump.

The caves couldn’t come quickly enough.

He felt more susceptible to the sun when he was using his glamour to fit in with the population of Earth, and it was his own fault for bringing all the technology and gear he had. He just wanted to make sure they could get some good data!

He didn’t quite trust Earth scientists, especially because they operated on their own agendas and did what served them, not everyone.

The trail was much nicer than being by the water; there were fewer people here and he could actually enjoy all the life on Earth.

He wasn’t a fan of the bugs but he had an organic and natural repellant that was serving him well.

“It has to be nearby,” he said, walking just behind her. “The terrain has already changed a bit, hasn’t it?” Or maybe it was just his imagination. His bags were heavy, maybe they were just tricking him. “I know there are entrances by the lake, I read about it. As long as we stay close to the water we should find something.”

Summer was not Naeria's favorite season, but she was used to the sun and the heat and the insects, since she spent so much time outside to work on her research. She had good hiking boots and good sunscreen.

Andreyia, on the other hand, was showing signs of fatigue. Getting into the cave and away from the sun would reduce the strain on him, so she turned away from her screen, which was not giving her much new information, and back towards the surrounding area.

"The trail is coming back towards the shore here," she noted. There wasn't a beach here, like the one they'd had to walk past before being able to access the woods, but if she listened, she could hear the soft lapping of water, and she could see the glimmer of reflected water through the trees.

She stepped off the path and closer to the water, expertly sidestepping some brambles while also taking care not to damage any of the nearby ferns that were thriving in this moist, shaded environment. From here, she had a better vantage point.

"That appears promising," she said, pointing towards where she could see a rock formation jutting right up against the edge of the reservoir.

Andreiya appreciated the shade, and while they were briefly stopped, he rocked on his heels and breathed. As soon as she found a promising lead, he took one glance and nodded. He trusted her, mostly, but his instinct aligned with logic.

“I hope this cave is lucrative for our research after all this effort to get here. I have read the reports that the caterpillars disintegrate if they leave the cave? I too am thinking it sounds preferable to this summer heat. I might stay in the cave until the sun goes down.”

He’d certainly brought enough supplies to last him that long if he needed to, and it was easy to get caught up in research.

“Earth has so many unique features. I can’t believe there is a world outside of Destiny City. I haven’t even explored all of it.”

Though, if he were being honest, he really didn’t want to stray too far from the Commodore. He’d gotten into enough trouble without meaning to that it brought him great relief to know that Lyndin was always nearby if he needed help. Naeria probably would have come to his rescue as well, so despite the unpleasantness of the season he thought it could be much worse without her.

"We can stay as long as you would like to," said Naeria, who did not want her friend to wither up like a caterpillar just because of some sunshine. She felt awful for the insects that the humans had tried to move, against their will. Of course she wouldn't try any such thing, which meant that they would need to study them in their on habitat, which would take most of the afternoon anyway.

"Do you need water?" she asked, glancing over to him and hoping he was taking care of himself. She did hope that his equipment would turn out to be useful, but he seemed so uncomfortable. "I think I see the entrance," she added as she stepped around a few more trees, looking at where the rocks seemed to open up into the earth.

Once they were in there, they could sit down for a while. She started to walk faster even as the sweat started to bead on her own face, wanting to get out of the weather as quickly as she could for him.

"I'm starting to think that Earth starts at the end of Destiny City," she told him. "The concrete and the skyscrapers are more lifeless than even Velencya."

Ugh, aren’t they?” Andreiya asked. He saw what he assumed was the entrance and followed her quickly. His spirits seemed rejuvenated when it seemed like the end was in sight.

“At least the air is clean on Velencya, and everyone cares about each other, and we’re respectful and work together. Here on Earth,” he huffed again. “Well, I don’t understand it. People are so mean and cranky, for no reason And selfish. Thank you, Naeria, but I brought water. Extra, in case you needed some, too.”

But of course she had been prepared.

In the shadow of the cave, he dropped his back and drooped, glad for the shade and coolness of the rock. “Oh, this is so much better. I like being out in nature like this. I hope Velenia has forests like these. I hope the summer isn’t so hot there. But I would forgive it if it were. I cannot believe that more people aren’t trying to escape the city so they can enjoy this. I feel refreshed already.”

He drew in a deep breath to clear his lungs as much as it was to recuperate from carrying his heavy bag. When he exhaled, he seemed at peace. “I’m really glad we could come out here today. I always like spending time with you.”

Naeria considered what he said about the humans for a long moment as she stepped into the cave, bringing out a flashlight to shine on the walls as they began to pass into the shadows.

"Humans are difficult to predict," she said, after that long moment. "And they are wrong about many things, but they can also be, um, kind?" There were a few among them that Naeria would call friends. "But all that can change in a second. They are volatile. Maybe it is because they barely live long enough to stop being children?"

They acted young with their wastefulness, and their tantrums.

A place like this, though, felt ancient. It felt quiet. It was cool, which would hopefully be of help to Andreyia. Naeria went silent for a moment, just breathing in the cool air.

Then she steppe forwards again, pointing towards where she could see a hint of a glow on the wall.

Andreiya pressed his lips together thoughtfully and then nodded. “That is a good observation. I suppose I cannot remember how I conducted myself when I was their age. Better than they do, though. Most certainly.”

But maybe it was because he hadn’t been so desperate to cram all of life’s experience into such a short timespan.

There was peace in this cave, old and unyielding. He breathed a sigh of relief for more than just the coolness. It didn’t really feel like home, but the agelessness of some Earth’s natural features reminded him of the air about some of their elders.

He felt safe here, and in awe.

Commodore Lyndin might not appreciate being compared to a cave full of glowing worms, but of course as soon as Andreiya’s eyes focused on the soft glow in the distance, it was just another mark on the list.

“Have you been making human friends, Naeria? I am struggling to do so. I am also not trying very hard. But perhaps my biases are restricting what could be an otherwise productive union. I…”

He paused, only briefly to consider his words, and then concluded, “Would like to make more of an effort to befriend them. If only to study their worlds, though. We have been on Earth for so long. I miss home. I would like to make progress in some direction. I might like Earth if I did not feel like we were trapped here.”

"I miss home, too," said Naeria, even as the soft glow of the bioluminescent caterpillars brought a true smile to her face, in the middle of that cave in the middle of Earth.

Then she hesitated, because this was one of the deep thoughts that she did not often speak, but this was only Andreyia she was with. They were deep underground, where no one else could hear them.

"But I also wonder, if Velencya is dying, and some of the senshi are having success with reviving their worlds," she paused, "Is there not somewhere else we can live?"

It wasn't the ideal solution, but it made more sense to the logical part of her mind than trying to fix such a huge energy crisis with their small research projects, or than to try to hunt Caedus on the hope that his starseed would fix their problems.

"But a plan like that would need a lot of alliances, and those are difficult, as you say. There is the one human who I spend several hours a week with. I like her, but," there was bafflement and slight anguish on her face as she said, "She also purchased me a horse."

She'd made the most of the situation, and was happy to have Portabella as a friend and teacher, but it was still something she had a hard time processing.

Andreiya waved his hand, not quite dimissively, but as if she should chase away the thought before it could weigh too heavily on her. “Humans are strange,” he rationalized. “Even when they think they are giving gestures of kindness.” They did not know the Velencians, or their customs, or all the trouble they gave them.

But, he supposed he could be grateful for the humans that tried.

Their heart was in the right place. Sometimes.

“I think it might be possible. But if it were, then I also think our Elders would have been looking into that. I suspect they have a great disdain for the thought of ‘colonizing’ any world.” The aliens that had come to Velenia ravaged it, and their ancestors. The survivors of Velenia and their offspring were predisposed to a great awareness of their presence in the universe.

“There may be worlds we could settle on, with permission. It isn’t as if the humans are taking advantage of their worlds, they all seem to have chosen Earth! But.”

He sighed heavily. Even Earth had its benefits. “ I don’t know. I want to try and save Velenia before trying to find somewhere else. I know how important it is to Commodore Lyndin. I just don’t understand why a Senshi is so important to a world. Knights can bring their Wonders to life without a Senshi. Mm. Sometimes. I feel like we should be able to bring Velenia back, with our technology and skill.” He hummed again and sighed heavily, but the glowing caterpillars had his attention so he leaned close to the wall to watch one. “I will have to research this more. I know we can save Velencya, and Velenia. And Commodore Lyndin. And,” he bit his lip. “Well, maybe even Caedus, too.”

"We still have a chance to save Velencya," said Naeria, quickly, because that was the ideal, wasn't it? She didn't want her friends to have to choose between their cultures and their lives, between one of their leaders and the other. "And I am going to work hard for that, too."

If she was supposed to be thinking practically, though, she did not want to be without a backup plan. There was overlap, too. They woul need resources and support from other worlds if Velencya was going to survive.

The insects were as beautiful as she had been hoping they would be.

She stopped by them, sucked in her breath, watching the soft glow of their bodies which reflected in their large eyes.

"Things like this, they do give me some hope," she admitted. "There is so much that we have still not discovered."

Andreiya tilted his head just slightly as Naeria examined the insects, and a wave of calm washed over him. He felt at peace, comfortable in this moment of objective scientific analysis. Even the mounting emotions were kept at bay.

He smiled softly as he watched her. Naeria had such visible passion, it was practically palpable in the cool cave air.

It gave him confidence to pursue his own research. It made him positive she would stick to hers.

They had more than a chance to save Velencya. They just had to approach it in small parts. It was like any other project. And so what if no one had been able to do it before? Things were different now. They knew more now. They had more resources, more allies.

“...They give me hope too, Naeria. And so do you.”
